CyanogenMod 6.1RC1 is out - Galaxy S I9000 General

It appears CM6.1 RC1 is out. I don't know whether it's available for Galaxy S I9000 though. I am seeing reports that it's available on the Vibrant. Anyone else know of this?

hmm... nice
looking forward to try it out once it is confirmed to work on I9000 series
i always noticed there are lot of developments and cool stuff going on with US Captivate and US Vibrant models
it feels like the International I9000 series is neglected by the Modding community

Cyanogenmod forums are sluggish Hordes of users are trying to get their CM6.1 goodness

Anyone tried them on the I9000?
Damn it sometimes I wish I had the US version so I would have more development

It is NOT available for the US Galaxy S variants yet either...
Cyanogen tweeted last night:
Builds for each device are slowly hitting the mirrors. ..and before you ask, there's no Vibrant or apps2ext support.

why would we want apps2ext lol

i am waiting for CM6.1 for i9000 since long time i hope we will be able 2 use it! coz i am suffering with the original rom JPA 2.2

Me too ;/ it'll be here someday and I cant wait to try it out.

What's working:
* MTD
* Radio
* Audio
* GPS
* Wifi
* Bluetooth
* HQ Video PLayback
* internal SD-Card
* external SD-Card
* Light Sensor
* Acceleration Sensor
* Initial Updater-Script for first rollout
What's not working:
* LQ Video Playback
* Camera
* Polling problem on RIL
* 2G/3G toggle
* Compass
* FM-Radio
* TV-Out
* USB sharing of internal SD-Card
Impressive progress.
With this, and the newer official Vibrant kernel source pending to be released, we might have a 100% functioning CM7 on our Vibrants and therefore a completely AOSP Gingerbread. Though Team Whiskey already made an experimental Gingerbread build that mostly works. Either way I'm excited for this progress of bringing AOSP to the Galaxy S and it's variants (especially our variant )
EDIT: Sorry if this isn't fit for the development section, maybe it should be moved to general?
FM-Radio? As far as i know it was decided that the vibrant does not have the hardware for this
Could they still meet the old broken camcorder and black and white previews issues on the CM6 build?
For me, as long as they fix the camera and polling, it is good for me. I don't have a data plan or use youtube very much. On the CMSGSTeam twitter it says coolya added some tweaks to the RIL java file.

this is the i9k, not vibrant. so the fm doesn't apply to vibrants.
is it true that this roms allows us to use more ram?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
No, the galaxy s has a maximum user available ram at 339 mb I think, provided by a speedmod kernel. The rest of the 512 mb is reserved for the video card, phone, and android system.
Anyone else besides me not see the download link?

On a serious note, it looks like the big guts of the project(basic functionality) has been done. Excited to see this when it comes to life.
I kind of gave up on any CM roms a while back. I donated to the cause and its been over six months already and nothing. At least nothing close to stable. I'm sticking with Team Whiskey . I love cyanogen on my.G1 but as far as the Vibrant goes I love me some TW. Who knows though, maybe I'll change my mind when it comes out

A small (hopefully inflammatory) question for ppl that are familiar with the Rom.
Is CM really worth all the fuss/hype?
I read ppl carrying 2 batteries for the sake of running cm6 beta...
And people fawning over the idea over Cm7, which doesn't seem to have full support from the CM devs to Bring it over to the Vibrant.
Is it that good of a rom? Vast improvement over what TW/D4A/Einharjar currently offer us?
(Don't have a phone that it natively supports Cm)
Just want to get some impressions, thanks!

They've been "working on" it for months with basically nothing to show for it. I can put out all the twitter feeds I want, it doesn't mean I have anything useful. "TheDude" or whatever his name was/is that was in charge of the Vibrant development portion of CM hasn't updated his twitter feed in forever in regards to CM for the Vibrant. I'd call that abandoned.
The point is, there is nothing from CM for the US SGS variants available right now that's A) not already been done by everyone else and/or B) stable/reliable/working and/or C) A monster battery hog (due to it being based off the... wait for it... international I-9000 kernel. The last update for the SGS was in October... October! And that's the I-9000 stuff that does us in Vibrant land very little good. So not only was the last release from CM for the SGS more than 3 months ago, it was almost completely useless to the US variants.
So, that's what we're talking about. The fact that CM has released nothing relevant for the Vibrant since it was released. That's not a knock on CM, it's just a simple statement of the facts. CM is largely irrelevant to the Vibrant scene and that void has been filled by other rom chefs, as such, the CM name has simply been coasting on inertia since then. If CM came on the scene with the release of the Vibrant, no one would even know of the group/person because they've released basically nothing.
If you know of a single release for the Vibrant by CM since last July, I'm all ears. But as far as I know, and I'm pretty up to date mind you, there has been exactly zero released for the Vibrant and I'm pretty sure the same holds true for the 3 other US variants as well.
Thanks for this update and keeping us in the "Know", will look forward to this comple

The reason everyone wants cm is that its aosp plus community extras. Cm started with htc because thats all there was. Most htc phones are similar. The og droid was pure android like the g1 and the n1 both have source and drivers. Vibrant has touchwiz and no source for 2.2 both of those count to why we don't have cm. plus samsung does things different making it hard to build from aosp source. I think we will see it when some form of basic aosp shows its head to the vibrant (nexus s). The nexus s is the single best chance for cm or aosp on the vibrant. Personally I welcome it because many of the touchwiz stuff we want will be in cm and still be aosp based. They already use a similar notification bar like on touchwiz. Pure android is fast, pure android is aosp. We have nothing on vibrant or I9000 that is aosp based and fully working. Everything on the vibrant is based on samsung precompiled software(2.2). Btw cm is known for stability and speed. Dont believe me, try a stock 2.2 g1. Then try cm. its light and day. The g1 is pure android already. No skins or anything. Just like nexus phones. In fact it was the first dev phone. Samsung made everything different to stand out for sales. It worked. With one product line they reach the top. I do wish they would put someone a little more talented on the project or at least more people considering we have maybe the largest number of android variant.

You are spot on with this....When I got my g1 it was people like cyanogen jesusfreak and the dude making roms. cyanogen has provided us with features and additions that we wish google would have put in place. I always default to cyanogen roms when available. For now though I am loving teamwhiskey so I do not feel like I am missing anything.
I flashed cyanogenmod on a mytouch slide last night and the phone became 2-3 times faster than stock: it was the first time the phone could run a live wallpaper or play angry birds without any lag. So I'm pretty excited for this to be ported to the vibrant.

Its like.the froyo rumors all over again. I am optimistic that we have better chances at getting gb than other competing phones such as the droid x due to similarities with the nexus s. Plus samsung and tmo said they would start updating more often if I recall correctly.
well considering thats for the i9000, i high doubt us U.S galaxy S folks will see it in march. I'd expect to wait the same amount from when european Galaxy S got 2.2 to us.
Well when Galaxy S is mentioned you must remember the i9000 had an official 2.2 several months before any US launched Galaxy S... So it is possible that the i9000 may get an official 2.3.. keep in mind however the Galaxy S 4g was just launched on T-Mobile and with 2.2.1... The i9000 has had 2.2.1 official running for a while... I could see the Galaxy S 4g getting an official 2.3...

but now i9000 roms run on vibrants witout soft reboots THAT SAID I9000 ROMS = VIBRANT ROMS = I9000 GINGERBREAD = VIBRANT GINGERBREAD .
Remember i9000 got FroYo in the beginning of November.
The Samsung Vibrant, the first of the other 3 US variants was the first to receive the FroYo. In January.
Leaks from FroYo to Vibrants appeared around November so around april we might get gingerbread leaks?

Not true, we need the 2.3 source before we can get a kernel that fixes issues thats will come with 2.3 I9000 roms. What we have now is because of the recent 2.2 source release
Definitely not here in the states.
The march update is for I9000 which is the Korea/Europe edition.
Vibrant and any other versions of the Galaxy S here in the USA
will not be anytime soon. It was like that for the Froyo as well.
I really don't care because I use a custom ROM anyways
March 2012

Vibrant forum dying?

Before I get to my point I want to thank all the devs for there hard work that they do in their spare time. They do it for free and hope that some of us donate to make it a little more worth their while.
Maybe it's just me or does it seem like the development thread is slowing down. I've noticed lately that most of the stuff coming in now is ports from other phones and updates for past builds. Theres not alot of new stuff rolling out. EDT seems to stay busy, but what happend to TW? I would have put money on having a stable 2.3 rom out by now to use as a daily driver. We also lost Eugene and leaked samsung builds seem to not be coming out as often.
Is our phone entering the twilight years? Are the dev's losing interest and working on other phones. I've played around with some of the new phones like the atrix and thunderbolt and i'm sure they could be a lil more interesting to build for.
I hope i'm wrong and 5 min. after I post this a new 2.3 rom comes out. It was fun when you flashed a new trigger rom and 1 day later the new bionix came out. This is a really nice phone and you have to really try hard to brick it. It's almost like Samsung designed it to be modded. Hopefully the devs can get inspired again or some new blood comes in to give us something new.
I think we need to be patient. One day there will be a leak for gb and things will fire up again.

just relax man every phone goes through spells of development. I see you only joined in april so just wait, Whitehawkx had a mostly working gb port working minus the gps and we have CM7 and MIUI support now as well.
Be patient this phone is amazing and im certain development will continue for it for some time.
In the mean time flash a miui beta or try out the EDT roms you wont be disappointed.
Lets not forget Simply Galaxy v3 a 2.3.3 rom. Yes still developing but stable.
Once we get a proper kernel you'll see more Gingerbread roms as for right now you have a ton of quality 2.2.1 and 2.2 roms to chose from.
Of course the OP is welcome to start developing on their own and contribute.

Yes, but point being is that we're pretty much at the mercy of Samsung & T-Mobile to release a 2.3.
We will not have a kernel source to play with until it releases for I9K, and even then we'll have issues for a while. And we won't have one with rockin' battery life until we get a leak or source.
But yeah, there really isn't much developing coming from anyone except the guys working on kernels & people like Whitehawk, sonique, and of course Untermench who actaully modify the code. Because there's not much else to do.
Things are winding down. There are only a handful of people around who have the knowledge and inclination to roll their own ROMs.
As newer devices with more capabilities are introduced (the dual core LG G2X will be in T-mobile stores April 20th), then the older ones lose favor.
That is how it is with Android. Your 8 month old phone becomes old. After 15 months its an antique!

I actually have tried to develop a theme to post here but there is so much involved with all the editing and i simply don't have the time. I really wish I did. Trust me I have a great respect for what the dev's do once I started playing around with just a theme. I can only imagine what a rom would take. Plus I can honestly say i'm not skilled enough to put out a quality rom any time soon, if ever. I'm really not complaining about effort or quantity from the devs, i've just noticed lately there seems to be a dull in the dev section. I was just wondering why.
Eugene is back. He said on twitter that he bought a Vibrant. You can see evidence, his newest Ginger Clone version has already had 4 updates.
Sure a lot of the development is for 2.2 and 2.2.1 roms, but I'd say we're easily WAY more active than we used to be. We've now got plenty of choices of roms, kernels, and themes. We've also got new people joining the Vibe development scene. There's an experimental Gingerbread Sense that's just started testing. We are now officially supported by the MIUI team. I see new things happening every day. Development doesn't always happen overnight, but I believe we've still got lots of good things look forward to.
Slowing down? I still remember when there was only one rom in the dev section. Now there's a new one each week, and at least one update every day.

Keep in mind the psychology at work here. Most of the people who get all angsty about this are rom comsumers, and not active dev's, themers, or kangers.
It appears that what we are experiencing now is a lot of cross development, taking existing roms from the international i9000 and porting them to our universe thanks to the availability of kernel source for 2.2. So the nature of activity has changed, but the scope has actually expanded.
This phone (thanks to dev work here @ XDA) stopped sucking ass A VERY LONG TIME AGO. Gains to be had at this point are largely cosmetic, so there is the appearance that improvements are not coming at the rate they used to. The fact of the matter is that quantitative improvements are largely unnecessary at this point.
As a "consumer" myself (I gave up on linux development a long time ago, owing to my own inherent laziness) I find the current state of affairs quite amazing. Your mileage may vary. YMMV.
What's funny is that people much prefer a broken ROM that gets fixed rather than a fully working ROM out of the box ^_^

All thats going to be different is when you go into settings about it will say 2.3 gingerbread

the rest is good.

That's the point for me. I stopped updating at KA6. Sure KA7 came out not long after, but why? I had been updating daily/weekly until then, always fighting some bug or flaw. With KA6, I flashed the ODIN version, removed bloatware myself, added the round battery icon, power off menu, and that was *it*. More recently I've updated the Kernel to Overstock 2.x and voodoo FS, but I'm not even sure why I need voodoo. Can't tell a difference in the real speed of the phone.
I didn't take the phone apart to add FFC like so many did (and who also never use it in most cases), so I don't need improved support for that... and themes, well... I guess there is that, not much going on in KA6 themes -- but that doesn't affect the use of the phone at all.
KA6 for me has been fast, stable, and by far the best on battery life of any I've touched yet. There are few if any programs out there that require 2.3 or higher, and until that is the case, why change?
The atmosphere is totally different than it was last fall, when the rest of the world was going 2.2 and Vibrant was stuck on 2.1. At that time, there were an increasing number of programs that simply would not work on Eclair - plus Froyo had been promised as an update. Now we have everything Samsung promised, and really if you're running a lightly modded ROM, it *is* bug-free.
So... until I am forced to consider 2.3, I'm sticking with KA6.. It is nice after years of constantly flashing upgrades on the HTC Vogue (wm6), then the G1, then flashing the MT3G constantly, then constantly flashing the Vibrant, to actually pick up my phone and have it work the same way it did yesterday.

So, no Ginger or ICS. Thanks Sammy!

It's official, we are no longer supported.
Thank you to all DEVs that have been cooking & porting ROMs with the latest. Without you, my phone would be an expensive and out-of-date purchase.
Would I ever buy another Sammy phone? Maybe, they do seem to have great specs compare to others.
Cheers.

seems like samsung had (or has?) been working on some GB/ICS features for the i9000 series.
Can't complain, it's official software, whether it was leaked legitimately or not. This may be a very good sign for us.
GPS Fail
[ROM][07-JAN][4.0.3] ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) Passion v10.6 - Proof it can and does work just fine on Galaxy S hardware.
As far as leaving out Touch Whiz... I seriously doubt most would consider that a deal breaker . Leave it out if it won't fit. That reason is too lame to explain why official updates just stopped so early in this phone's life.
It is simple in my mind. Samsung screwed the pooch on 10,000,000 phones with the faulty GPS hardware they chose to stick into these phones. All roms, from the "official" garbage Samsung's put to the excellent roms from brilliant developers like the one above, can never seem to get the GPS in these phones working properly.
Samsung wants 10 million Galaxy S phones to just go away, so we'll stop asking them when they're finally going to fix the gps.
Samsung gave up on the Galaxy S long ago.
You know what, the devs here are crazy awesome. They've basically put a stable NON-TOUCHWIZ ICS on our devices (passion and a couple others but passion in particular) and I couldn't be more thankful as I am not well off and have to buy older devices to keep my android addiction fixed thanks devs for all that you do. We truly appreciate you guys

So, I've been out of the vibrant loop for a bit. What is the best/most stable daily driver for you guys?

The most stable rom for me (and not only me) is by far Bionix 1.3.1. After all the roms that i tried(2.3 or ics) Bionix is still the best with no bugs and working gps

Passion still has a few bugs to work out, but otherwise it's the best rom I've ever had on my Vibrant.

Remember that GPS works* for ICS but with an asterisk! Once your phone goes to deep sleep, GPS won't work until you reboot your phone and use it immediately (before any deep sleep). This is a highly accepted observation.
Support for phones
It's official, we are no longer supported.
Not supporting Sammy but.... I've found this problem (little or no support) with anything that is electronic a common practice. These companies are pushed buy sellers and yes the consumer to come up with the next 'latest and greatest'.
Appliances, TV's, modems, routers, computers... you name it, after months of support Sammy and the like, move along and let the buyer find resources to upgrade.
and so a +1 to your following statement and DEVs'
Thank you to all DEVs that have been cooking & porting ROMs with the latest. Without you, my phone would be an expensive and out-of-date purchase.
+1
Thanks for all the replies... Going to check out a couple of the recommended ROMs tonight. Thanks again!

You mean this Petition?
News Sources are in Post #4 and I-9000 "Value Pack" story is in Post #6
Also I have been pounding AndroidPolice (also in Post #6)in both the Val-Pack story's comments and also on G+. I have seen several people from the G+ article +1'ing me and some of the names i have also seen on the petition's comments. So it is working.
Edit: Just went in and we are at 1132 signatures. That is a little under 100 today alone.

Samsung says our Vibrants can't do Ice Cream Sandwich

I counted about a dozen sweet Ice Cream Sandwich Roms in the Development forum based on at least three completely open source repo's.
I say up yours Samsung, we don't need your kind around here!!!
they said that cuz our phones dont have the memory to handle the ics using touchwiz framework
and i doubt they would ever remove it so no official update for us

They have a SGS II port in the i9000 forum that is ICS touchwiz and it seams to run pretty well, (they have a video, i tried to port it but the kernel is hacked to make it work) so really they just dont want to do it.

I'm enjoying Slim ICS far more than I expected. Looonnng time xda lurker, I hope I can bring something to the table.
They want us all to spend more money on newer phones.
are you guys still stuck on this subject? GET OVER IT. We have amazing ICS ROMS in our dev section already. Samsung has their business style just as any other company.
If you guys are really still stuck on the subject, you could try to spread the word of this petition...

Sadly the petition started to slow down about a month ago, but hey, maybe you guys can give it a second wind. Although I honestly doubt we'll get an official upgrade at this point in time.
