Its like.the froyo rumors all over again. I am optimistic that we have better chances at getting gb than other competing phones such as the droid x due to similarities with the nexus s. Plus samsung and tmo said they would start updating more often if I recall correctly.

well considering thats for the i9000, i high doubt us U.S galaxy S folks will see it in march. I'd expect to wait the same amount from when european Galaxy S got 2.2 to us.

Well when Galaxy S is mentioned you must remember the i9000 had an official 2.2 several months before any US launched Galaxy S... So it is possible that the i9000 may get an official 2.3.. keep in mind however the Galaxy S 4g was just launched on T-Mobile and with 2.2.1... The i9000 has had 2.2.1 official running for a while... I could see the Galaxy S 4g getting an official 2.3...

Don't get your hopes up, let's just be happy with the amazing software our fellow peers at XDA provide for us to enjoy our phones. If an update comes, it comes.

its for i9000 lol.

but now i9000 roms run on vibrants witout soft reboots THAT SAID I9000 ROMS = VIBRANT ROMS = I9000 GINGERBREAD = VIBRANT GINGERBREAD .

Remember i9000 got FroYo in the beginning of November.
The Samsung Vibrant, the first of the other 3 US variants was the first to receive the FroYo. In January.
Leaks from FroYo to Vibrants appeared around November so around april we might get gingerbread leaks?

meh.... this is the froyo run around all over again. i've got gingerbread on my vibrant as of yesterday. sure it's not perfect, but the only downside's i've encountered is no gps and battery life isn't the best.

march? It will be out december.

Not true, we need the 2.3 source before we can get a kernel that fixes issues thats will come with 2.3 I9000 roms. What we have now is because of the recent 2.2 source release

Definitely not here in the states.
The march update is for I9000 which is the Korea/Europe edition.
Vibrant and any other versions of the Galaxy S here in the USA
will not be anytime soon. It was like that for the Froyo as well.
I really don't care because I use a custom ROM anyways

Samsung Galaxy S Getting Android 2.3 Gingerbread February,2011

GOOD NEWS! for Galaxy S owners, the Gingerbread man will be coming to Samsung Most popular smartphone (Galaxy S) Flag-ship.
Remeber, Earlier this Month, Samsung Mobile India Twitter feed tells the fact that the mobile will get Android 2.3 (Screenshot below), The company kept it short and simple with a brief tweet: "Yes we will get gingerbeard on GalaxyS." but no other info announced from the company about the update. As we know Samsung has released the Froyo to All users on Many worldwide Carriers on 11,November 2010 and All of them is Now enjoying Froyo and Waiting to taste the Gingerbread.
Well, Today we Got a Confirmation That Samsung Galaxy S is Getting Another Update probably on February,2011 may be Earlier and this update will have Android 2.3 Gingerbread onboard. Leaked ROMs and Videos may start rolling-out on January so Stay tuned, Enjoy your Froyo... Gingerbread is coming on the way to Make "YouMobile".
Gingerbread brings with it an improved user interface which is slicker and more streamlined, along with better power management. It also boasts one-touch word selection and copy/paste, support for multiple cameras and goodies such as NFC (Near Field Communications).

This is a joke for sure.
My S has Eclair, till this time there is no official froyo upgrade available for my phone and samsung is going to release gingerbread the coming February?
Are we talking about Samsung or about the comedy channel?

This is the difference between porting (having to program the drivers for about everything) and having a native release (like HTC on N1).
Now that NexusS is in the hands of Google, we can expect faster release!

Froyo has been out since October/early November, officially released by Samsung. Blame your carrier if your not getting the update. Contrary to belief, Samsung is quicker than HTC when pushing out updates, it's just that HTC devices have a much larger userbase on XDA, hence the quicker porting/updating.

N1 is the base on wich they developped the update, don't you think it's normal it gets prior updates?
It is also pretty usual that all the "clones" of N1 will get theses updates pretty fast, since HTC only have to put their bloatware on it and it's pretty much done!
Thanks! Hope this is true.

2.3 will come officialy probably by the time the phone is phased out.. not all countries have 2.2 yet.
err i will believe when i see leaked firmware of 2.3. Then it shows that they are truly working for a 2.3 release

Both of these are hardware dependant and both the Galaxy S doesn't have. The multiple camera support is for using with taking 3D pictures and/or recording 3D movies. And NFC is there so that android devices can attempt to get ahead of the iphone5 which is said to support it but these needs a dedicated chip.

Google can not give the gingerbread code out to companies until it has been officially released.
Meaning no company will have any advantage in the race for gingerbread.

I have had one problem with this phone since purchase in September. You need to try a custom rom with a kernel upgrade, not like there is any lag in stock JPU.
I don't get how so many people complain about this great device when it can be pimped out within 30 minutes.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Some Galaxy still don't have an official Froyo update yet. And the ones that do are still laggy. The 2.2.1 is finally a ROM that isn't laggy but its not official its a leak.
If Samsung comes out with Gingerbread they will screw it up. I'd rather have the community come up with a basic Gingerbread that works. And the community will do it long before Samsung does.
dude this is samsung, we all saw what happened with froyo and all the delays.
I have little hope for a febuary release, i say it's closer to june
2.2.1 is a revelation. I have put it on my galaxy s and its no longer laggy, really smooth, new market, lock screen wallpapers etc. Finally its transformed the phone into the powerhouse it always had the potential to be. I urge you all to get 2.2.1 ASAP!

Is it a matter of time before we see Gingebread?

Just wanted to know if its only a matter of time before we see android 2.3 roms on samsung galaxy vibrant? I know the nexus s has 2.3 but i don't know what that means for other high end android phones. Do we have to wait for a leaked version before we can install 2.3, or can developers create a rom just like gingerbread on the nexus s? THANKS in advance!

As much as I would like 2.3, you have to know that T-Mobile has not released 2.2 OTA yet. I'm guessing Samsung is going to skip 2.2.1 and HOPEFULLY start developing 2.3 for the SGS lines. Giving Samsung's software track record along with T-Mobiles crappy service (in terms of getting updates out), it'll be a long while before we can even sniff 2.3 (thats been built and leaked for the Vibrant, not ported over).
Samsung's website (think it is under firmware link) shows the sgs including the usa tmobile sgs planned for the 2.3 update.......... to be safe look for it in August-Oct 2011 not before (my guess)

I doubt very much we ever see official 2.3 on this phone.
I agree and think tmobile would like to foget these variant phones all together and concentrate on future developments. The SGS phones are in need of upgrades multicore. Sammy the industry leader and can't get bogged down with last yrs tech.

You saying that we won't get 2.3 is just as helpful as the OP's post - zero facts, just I think, he said, she said etc.
i dont think we will get it either, i think samsungs main focus now is the Galaxy s2,,
its typical of samsung to ditch its old owners and favour the new ones.. But if it wasnt for us Galaxy S1 owners,,, there would be no Galaxy S2....
Hopefully Cyanogen Mod will be stable before this 'gingerbread release' and thats exactly what im gunna use.
In my region we don't even have 2.2.1, I dare not think so far as yet.

well 2.2.1 with speedmod and voodoo sound my phone is finally doing everything i wanted/needed of it with good battery and performance. so i am happy for the moment.. will be picking up an sgs ii hopefully bootloader will be unlocked or i may be selling it quick.
I believe we will get the 2.3. I've been running 2.2.1 since 27/12/10 so march/april would be about right for an update.
It does make sense that samsung would give us gingerbread. Afterall, right now, they are heavily promoting the galaxy S, even on the dawn of the galaxy S2 arriving. I'd say we'll be supported for some time to come.
i9000/JPY. fast n lagfree. good times.
What a bunch of useless haters are you!
Why don't you take the time to look and see how much devices HAVE 2.3 before dissing Samsung...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Android_devices
And the only way HTC has more devices with update is because of Nexus One, similar hardware = easyer update... But then, the desire (to name this one) just got 2.2 in the US...
Galaxy S, with a pretty much different hardware got it faster!
It's just hear say. I'll believe it when I see it.

well as stated i honestly dont believe we will get official upgrade as nothing showing on open source or samfirmware they said in dec it will be out in feb here we are at the end of said month still no gingerbread think we may get ice cream 2.4 but much later in year ----looks as though cynagenmod 7 nearly there so be only way to get 2.3 been watching tried earlier release very stable so now waiting on codeworks as be waiting long time for samsung nw they have a new babie sgs 2

If SGS is to get Android 2.3 it will be a few months after the release of SGSII. Because 2.3 is a selling point for SGSII. But SGSII really need Android 2.4 to get better dual core support. And 2.3 really isn't that big an upgrade.
So I would suggest that you forget about 2.3 and enjoy your great and fast SGS with 2.2.1 for now.

Date *kinda* set for Gingerbread's release on Epic

From ComputerWorld
"Samsung Galaxy S [UPDATED 4/7/11]: All signs point to Gingerbread being in the cards for Samsung's popular Galaxy S line of phones. That includes the Samsung Captivate on AT&T, Samsung Epic 4G on Sprint, Samsung Vibrant on T-Mobile, and Samsung Fascinate on Verizon (which as of now has yet to even receive Froyo). Rumors started popping up in January that some Galaxy S phones could see an Android 2.3 upgrade as early as March or April. Samsung's official Samsung Mobile India Twitter account, meanwhile, has stated numerous times that the Galaxy S will receive Gingerbread -- version 2.3.3 -- but that a definite launch date has not been set. Samsung's Romanian Facebook page has issued similar promises. In late March, software said to be a leaked version of Samsung's official Galaxy S Gingerbread update surfaced on an Android developers' forum, heightening speculation that a rollout could be near. In addition to all of that, Samsung's Finnish site has now posted a news release stating that Gingerbread will reach Galaxy S handsets "in mid-April.""
Another good article to read from Lifehackerwith a spreadsheet of release dates.
-Troll
lol "Troll".
Well, let's see, even if gingerbread were CLOSE to being released, don't think of the Galaxy S as a sign.
First of all, the Galaxy S is Samsung's MAIN FLAGSHIP device, AND Galaxy S's are only released in Europe, I believe.
So therefore, even if Samsung had a finished product of 2.3 for us by mid-april, Sprint's going to have to add their crap to it and **** it up some more, make it even more buggier than Samsung achieved, and send an OTA that will have to be pulled the day after it comes out because it'll fry people's phones. SOOO, if we WERE to get Gingerbread, I'd say by August-Mid September at the earliest.
Sorry for bringing your hopes down...just stating the facts.

ICS and i9000 - a little history

I'm not going to ask if Samsung would relase ICS for i9000. I'll just refresh my memory with a little bit of history.
December 6th 2010 - SDK 2.3
December 17th 2010 - The source code 2.3
February 13th 2011 - SGS2 announced
February 25th 2011 - 2.3 OTA for N1 and NS
April 16th 2011 - 2.3 "OTA" for SGS1 (5+ months after 2.3 SDK came out).
So, if the history repeats itself, we won't get 4.0 before April of 2012th, if ever. More possible scenario would be SGS2 is getting 4.0 in April, and SGS1 stays on 2.3 due to "memory problems".
Anyone remembers 1st Samsung Galaxy (i7500?). It received 1.6 six months after Donut SDK came out and stayed on 1.6 due to memory problems ...
I'll be buying SGS2 HD LTE soon anyway.. can't resist
I to do not think we'll get it from Samsung but do hope CM hooks us up with CM9 soon after source code is out.

Yeah, but don't forget Samsung can fool us with their launcher that "will probably require more RAM than available", just like Sense needed to much RAM on HTC Desire and Desire never got official 2.3, although Nexus One will probably go even to 4.0.
Btw. Nexus S received official 2.3 OTA the same day as N1, on 23 February 2011, so we can expect CM8 much before that, I'm just hoping for GPU enabled browser in ICS, only thing that keeps me from CM7 now.

3a)first bulids that infos about was leaked from nexuss
4) galaxy nexus premiere = november = source release confirmed officialy
5) sgs1 update process speeded up (not to mention leaks) but the source codes stays outdated basicly
expect ics leak at february or maybe we get even more lucky
as there already are nexuss builds but just not public

As i know there wasnt problem with RAM (desire has full 512MB) but with ROM, because new sense was too big for desire memory, thats why desire got old sense. If nexus s gets ICS and sgs dont, i will never ever buy another android phone (i had four of them, and i've been ****ed every time from htc and samsung), because i'm not money printing machine to buy new phone every year if i want to use new upgraded OS.
Do you realize that sgs is "old" as iPhone 4 and as you can see iPhone 4 already got iOS5 (even 3GS got iOS5 and that **** is older than nexus one) and will get iOS6, and i must to spend another 550-600 euros to buy new phone that will be abandoned after one year. Some will say that sgs dont have enough memory but i dont give a fu.k for that, they need to find a way to make things work, because apple can.
if SGS will dont get a ICS, I will be very sad, bcz Desire HD will get it... damn
There is no reason for SGS not to get it if Nexus S is getting it. It's same freaking phone for most part. Unless Samsung desides to f... us on this one.

well, Nexus S hasn't got the official ICS yet
but there is already a working stable ICS port
so, if DEV were able to port the ICS to the Nexus S
they can definitely do the same for the SGS1
just get a good gang of DEVs to start cracking on it, it really just depends how motivated or not are the DEVs using SGS1
isc theme port i think mostly, not much can be doune wo aosp sources thats why cm guys are holding for that source release

I hate ports, cm7 still isnt good enough as stock samsung gb (used it few times), ok its faster but thats that, only benefit. I gave money to samsung not to devs (dont want to be disrespectfull) in turn i expect software updates.
