Hey there
I got my Desire HD now for 2 days, and I love it.
The recording of videos is beautiful, but I am dissapointed about one thing.
When you record in 480x800 resolution, you can use a very nice zoombar, and it works great.
But when I want to record in HD with 720p, I cannot zoom anymore...
Why is this..., and is there maybe a way to enable the zoom with 720p?
Sorry but you clearly dont understand zoom, the maximum definition of the camera is 720p, without an optical zoom i.e. a big lens there is no way to zoom in and maintain 720p.
Software zoom works by enlarging the picture - using less definition. So there will never be able to do this while maintaining 720p.

I knew this, but why is it not possible to enlage the picture with 720p?
because it would be misleading?
If you had a setting for 720p, and say you zoomed in by just 25% your almost back to Standard definition.
so why not just film in normal definition in the first place?

So what... if I film with normal definition and use the zoom, the quality will drop either.
When I film in 720, it has a bigger resolution, I would like to zoom in a bigger resolution, but yea... maybe HTC does not have enough experience with cameras yet (so far I heard).
Anyways, I like the camera either, but I'm just dissapointed that I'm not able to zoom in 720p mode.
If you film at normal definition (under 720p), you will have sharper digital zoom, because the camera is more sensitive and has lot pixels left "to zoom with". It is hard to explain, but trust me, zooming at normal definition is possible without losing so much quality.

Because I did a test with the camera, like zooming, and focusing, and the quality doesn't drop that much when zooming.

Yeah, the zooming should be really good at least when using up to mid range zoom

Thats where we need clarrification from HTC..
How do you know that when you zoom in standard resolution the it doesn't do it by using the full resolution and zooming in on that part, thus maintaing the full 480p and that section you have zoomed in on?
I would sugest this is the case - have you tried it?

Can you reply in normal English pls? English is not my mainlanguage, but the way you type does it make even harder for me.

I was trying to put it in simplistic terms... sorry
imagine if you had 720 lines, you can move yourself so close you can only see 480.
Well this works in reverse if you only want 480 lines and you zoom in, in effect your selecting the middle 480 lines of the total 720. so you should not see any loss in quality, unless you are really zooming all the way in.
any better?

Has any1 tried to increase (hack/regedit/hexedit, or thirdparty app, homebrew app, etc.) the resolution of video capture. With an Overclocked CPU what do y'all think is the highest resolution captured possible w/ this 2M camera. 1280x720p? 1920x1080i/p?. I know there are HD camcorders out there w/ less CPU power but dedicated chips for video encoding. How difficult to write such an app? Any tips to get started? Much thanks.
It's a 2mp camera so the max resolution is 1600x1200 if you go past that you start to get ripping/tearing and the images look ugly (I believe). It would be nice if the camera recorded in a higher quality/resolution I just don't know if that's possible with the hardware.

I don't have the phone yet. But I believe that the current App only allows a much lower res than 1600x1200 for video capturing, such as 640x480. Still image is possible up to 1600x1200. Pls chime in current owners. Thanks.
For sure this would be a great improvement, but as you all know PPC camera's are complete ****. I doubt that anything like this is possible but I would love for someone to prove me wrong.

Heh the standard camera app won't let you get past 176x144 in movie mode. You might be able to squeeze a jolty 320x240 clip out of your phone when using a third party app such as CoolCamera and overclocking the crap out of your chip, but 640x480 is off limits by far. The camera on these things is slow and not nearly as sophisticated as a camcorder. You'll have to wait another few years
Try to use Ateksoft "Cool caera" or Webcamera plus.
You can get ebtter pics and videos with Coolcamera.....
Up to 640x480 and more.
But Highdefinition is something else

I have high detail Map picture . I open it pass through Albums and try to zoom in the picture. The zoom level is limited,I can't see the small detail in my MAP.
Please,Help that How do I change the Zoom level in the HD2 registry?
Please Help!!!!!!!
Up,Still wait for answer.
I want to know this too.
But, dont get your hopes high for an answer.
I never got one for the same question on Touch Pro and Touch Pro 2..
I believe the zoom will only go as far as 1:1 pixel
If this is true zooming futher would not yield any extra detail
Finally,I solve it by convert JPG to Pdf, It work fine on Adobe Reader LE.

nope, it's far less that 1:1 in case of large images. Actually I think it's not even related to the image's resolution. It's fixed to 3-4x I guess.
I took a picture and the picture looked good until I zoomed in. Despite taking a "superfine" picture on the maximum available resolution, zooming in resulted in an extremely grainy photograph. Pictures taken on my HTC Raphael running Windows Mobile look far better.
I am still happy with the phone and I am sure the picture quality will be fine for what little I use it for, but I really expected a much higher level of detail.
Have you considered the Galaxy S allows for larger zoom?
I moved the pictures from the Raph to my Galaxy S, so I am viewing them on the same platform.

But the picture you took on your ralph is how many megapixels?
Either way a photo when viewed on a monitor will be resized to 1080 max.your just Digital Zooming farther...megapixel doesn't mean quality..it just means your capturing more
3.2 Megapixels on the Raph. I'm going to mess around with settings and see if I can get a better picture, but I was really hoping for this phone to have everything working well out of the box without tweaking.
It's not disappointing because I wasn't expecting much. But the signal to noise ratio of the pics is low. You can see quite a bit of grain. I do like the color saturation.
Meh, it works as a phone cam.
So far with the GPS/Compass issues and the average quality cam, I'm not considering this a "superphone" or a premium Android device. It's just ok. And I'm ok with that.

it is working well....take your pc and resize the images to 1920x1080...
again megapixels does not give you quality..but allows you for farther zoom..if you zoom in more...I have a 6mp canon camera...when I zoom it it looks grainy as well..but when its printed or uploaded..it is rescaled to proper resolution..then it looks perfect...
More megapixels equals less quality on any small device.
Ps I thought that Vibrant didnt have gps issues, no ?
I noticed the same grainy quality and am slightly disappointed as well. But if you make sure you are in the best mode for your environment the quality improves appreciably. Still, the issue is not happy making.

From what I read...the GPS issue is only with Google Maps when there was one, when using a GPS software there was no issue..but firmware upgrade fixed that either way..
@bdjnk - Again..this is to be expected...megapixels != quality...it only allows for more zoom...the quality when compared was no different then a 5mp canon camera...so far the Galaxy S actually has the best camera of any phone of the same class...

Wrong, the GPS issue is actually more pronounced in other apps, for example, My Tracks.
Firmware upgrade didn't fix anything.

Hm, not really. I am not an expert, but to my eye the same level of noticeable graininess is present on the phone and on my computer.

What I am saying is this is generally normal on an unprocessed image with high megapixel count..resize both images to 1920x1080 (which is maximum screen resolution now) and you can see what the actual quality is...
Or are you expecting the phone to act like microscope?
to explain, if you do 100% zoom a 1mp would look better then a 3mp, a 3mp will look better then a 5mp..a 5mp would look better then a 20mp..its just how it is..
Are you folks taking photos in widescreen?
I found that, although it looks much nicer, when I use a camera app and make the camera take widescreen photos, and then look at the details of the photo, it is no longer 5mp. It seems it downgrades the photo to 3.2mp or something like that.
Is there actually a disadvantage in taking widescreen photos?
ps. how come phones like the Desire HD utilize fullscreen camera right out of the box but we dont?

The same reason older phones navigate the web more artfully, or why the similarly-powered SGS2 and single core machines can run Full HD .mkvs and we cant, or why our camera (still) doesnt take 1080p shoots: because several parts of our software isnt optimized.
I have been wondering about the exact quality of "Widescreen" pictures myself, anyone can shed a light on that?

web browsing in GB is amazing, smooth as butter. still use dolphin browser though
My widescreen photo's (the default) have always been 3.2mp -- even on Froyo. It's because of the way the photo is cropped. If you set the camera to 5mp, the photo's do not fill the Atrix screen because of the aspect ratio.
Yep, widescreen appears to take the 5MP roughly 4:3 and crop the top and bottom to make it something like 16:9. I changed it to the 5MP setting and always use that.

So pretty much, even though the widescreen makes sense and looks proper on our phones, it is actually not a good option to use
i actually like it, looks great for landscape pictures, or long portraits. if you just want a normal picture then you should know not to use "wide"screen.
Hello, I was reading a Galaxy Note 4 review and came across 2x lossless zooming for 30fps 1080p video recording and wondered why we don't have it.
Lossless zooming is great as it preserves detail in zoomed situations while keeping the file size big, unlike 4k recording which would consume lots of storage to record then zoom afterwards
As our phone supports 4k recording, doesn't the G2 have the ability to have lossless zooming capability?
If so, can someone tell me if there is there an app that enables us to do this, or someone, perhaps xdabbeb, can enable it for us??
Thanks

Lossless zoom is achieved when u have an optical lens movment.
I dont believe any of these phones have optical zoom.
You can't "enable" optical zoom. It literally means that the lesnses need to move back and forth. Like in cameras. You see the lens moving and adjusting to the zoom.

I thought it was a software thing on mobile phones where they increased video resolution and cropped it to show the area you are zooming in on so that the zoomed part remains 1080p??
For example, a quarter of a 4k video would be a 'zoomed in' 1080p one

I guess.. It can't preserve detail so it has to be cropped.
It's like zooming into a picture in photoshop.
We have digital zoom only. Digital zoom scales an area up to "zoom" in. It blows up pictures making them look nasty.
This is a great question and I think the prior replies have missed the concept. Yes, our camera is like 8 or 12 megapixels, but 1080p HD video is like only 2 megapixels. So when we record video on our 8 megapixel sensors, the sensor "line-skips" to resolve only a 2 megapixel (1080p) image. When we zoom in, digitally, it keeps the same "line-skipping" design as non-zoomed. This results in a lower-than-HD resolution. It would be VERY SMART to adjust the line-skipping design, or not line-skip at all, on a digital zoom, thus still using 2 megapixels worth of photo sites to capture the "zoomed" image. This is the same concept as "sensor windowing" used on RED cameras when changing the resolution. I'm surprised this is not the new/standard way to implement digital zooming on ALL modern smartphones to preserve details and resolution when digitally zooming, because of course there is no optical zoom option.
