Hi everyone! I'm brand new to the Android scene, so please be patient with me. I bought a Samsung Vibrant to develop on, but really didn't want to buy a monthly plan (was just going to use it over wifi). Turns out though, with the recent JI6 update, I can't get it unless I have an actual data plan (I called T-mobile to confirm). They said it'll be the same situation when Froyo eventually comes out.
SO... now I'm asking the hackers! Is there a way to manually install the updates via wifi only? Or should I abandon my quest for a wifi-only Android device and take this thing back before my 30 days are up?
Jesus Christ dude just take a look at the Vibrant development section.

Wow calm down, he said he is new to this bear with him. Instead of of harassing him you could have answered and then this thread would of been death by now.
Anyways, you can update to the JI6 though something called ODIN, the forum under development has many tutorials of how to do it, all you need is ODIN and the Samsung Vibrant drivers, which are on development forum on the "bible thread" .
I hope that helps.
Here is a video to give you a basic idea of how to use ODIN again don't use the files shown there because they are outdated.

eh, i understand fed's frustration.. all these people flooding these forums with the same convoluted questions can take its toll.. but the OP is an admitted newbie.

You could call up T-Mobile, have them activate the Internet for one month, then close it after you get the update. Just be sure not to sign a contract.

You don't have a plan with T-Mobile period, or you don't have a plan that includes data?
If you have a plan with T-Mobile even without data you WILL get the OTA, I did and a few others did without a data plan. Also I'm on a prepaid plan, I got the update notification while wifi was on.
If you don't have a plan with T-Mobile at all then I'm not sure if you would get the OTA or not. My guess is you won't.
Also as the others have said, you could go to the development section and look at some of the threads that will help you get the update without waiting for the OTA notice.

congratulations for making such a dumb thread as your first post without thinking a minute about it.

Congratulations on your first post. To appreciate your very useful post that can benefit the community, i have thanked your post. This is so that members can click on your profile, click on 'Find all thanked posts by betrayer0177 ' and view that wonderful post of yours. And oh yes, maybe you should start a new thread asking on 'How to make an Evo 3d from air'. Maybe your intelligence is spatial, so i will just describe how to make a call without a SIM. First, power up your phone(yes,in case u r asking-battery is needed),switch on your wifi(this is done via the touchscreen, not via some telepathic drugs) and install one of the apps in the link.(http://www.androidauthority.com/top-best-free-calls-android-phones-voip-19829/)...fiy,you have to download the app from the market.for example, for 'Fring',type in 'Fring' in the search bar using your hands, not your dickhead. Then install it. Use the app for your calls. And if you also dont have any wifi in your house, try to search for unsecured networks or tap on a public wifi.Good luck and once again, thank your for this excellent post. You have enlightened our day and wasted about 5mins of our lives.

Your best bet would be to pop into a T-Mobile store and ask for a Pay As You Go SIM to use with your phone. Use that to tide you over until you get your new phone.
Or use a landline!
Why not use snail mail?

Anyone know why when I tried to open a network support ticket they are detecting I'm on a mikfroyo rom. I changed Roms so many times the past 6months.. so what the hell is up with that:
They even said you have to be on a official Rom.. man how they detect this info is pretty funny. And how wrong it is.
But any way to fix that issue
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Why do you think they would give you support when you voided your warranty by rooting and installing another ROM?
I mean seriously...
I don't need support. I do wish to inform them of their network problem here... If so I have 8 other people with Sprint who are official.. who can report the network problem aswell ... Why would I need support if my phone is perfectly fine. And besides the fact I'm not running the Rom they are indicating I am...

Again... think about it for a little bit. They don't know if you have 8 other people who are experiencing they same problem you are.
They're not going to waste their time with a problem that could be the result of a modded phone.

You only voided your warranty with HTC, not sprint. I've taken my rooted/S-OFF device many times and have talked to the store reps and they have no policy against rooted devices. There is stores that will give you a hassle just to be lazy, meanwhile other stores will ask you to simply flash back to stock to help narrow down issues caused by software or hardware.
Oh so a version from stock that just has apps removed that ate considered bloated. So that can be a phone error. Dude I've flashed many roms kernels and radios and its the network. I'm not after phone support. I don't need a warranty on my Damn phone but I pay them for service via their towers if they have issues with it then they should fix their network problems. I will pay insurion if I have phone issues its why I have them.

The guy just said to install a stock Rom and give him info. The guy was like okay 3rd party. You need to install stock . But he did agree there is probably a problem in the area.

ANyways the guy said I should keep stock until testing is done well. Im on a modified stock rom etc (testing this rom out). Anyways is there a way to show them my software/build number as stock or whatever to fool them when i re provision it to update their system?

I used to Run Mikfroyo but the thing is I don't know how they know I was on a custom rom. Maybe when provision your phone it sends that data. Now I'm On a different rom but i was unaware how he knew. The guy *PinkElmo* basically just said to go back to stock ROM for the duration of the testing (sounds like he not only not has a problem with it but sounds like he uses custom as wellXD).
I'm still puzzled as to how they found out...
I also currently using mikfroyo 4.61. But I didn't start rooting after a month signing up.

I had to provision a few months back though... But It Got me wondering. I have been downloading a stock rom at 199mb it should take roughly 2-8 hours on the Sprints NOW DialUp Network
Sprint has a program called OMA-DM. This program has all the information from the status section of your device. When I worked for sprint we would have customers update their data profile, this would send the information to the tool. The rep can then see what rom you are on. However this did not work on AOSP roms since they do not update the profile.
If you want to fool sprint update your profile under a stock unmodified rom, then flash to AOSP, the info for the sense rom would be still in the system.
Furthermore they can see if you have updated the profile, so if you tell them that you did they will be able to see if you actually did or not.. They are also able to view all the transactions with dates and times between your phone and the tool.
My advise to you is to suck it up and run the official rom until the testing is over, usually about a week.
Also sprint has no control over a custom rom, so they automatically have you update profile and firmware to the current version to ensure that the phone is working to their standards and things that they have control over.
TL;DR - Quit complaining and use a stock rom so sprint can do their testing.
The complaining in this thread has me puzzled. Run a stock Tom for them to test, reinstall favorite Tom when done...

I imagine sprint can know quite a bit about your phone. When I had my diamond, (or maybe it was my Evo, I forget) something wasn't working right. I got on the phone with a tech, and he proceeded to to operate my phone while I was holding my phone. I could see the screen clicks, and him going from one menu to another, operating my phone remotely. Blew me away.
As for the monitoring SW mentioned earlier in this thread, does it read build prop values? Cuz I'm guessing that's how they get your device info.
Lastly, post 2 and 3 about not expecting sprint to work on/assess your rooted phone. BS. Sprint has given mixed signals about this. I know there have been internal memos released stating they now will honor rooted phones. I think lazyness is the culprit when a comes to CSRs or techs rejecting for root. I've always taken in my rooted phone and put a stockish rom on it first, when I have a hardware problem (blown speaker, broken screen, etc.)

They used an application call LogMeIn Rescue. It gives them the ability to remotely view/control a pc, windows or blackberry phone. Its actually a lot easier to do it for a customer more often then trying to walk them through it.
Yes the information displayed in the about phone section is stored in the build.prop.
As for the software; software plays a factor in how the device operates and communicates with the network. Sprint has designed the stock software on their devices to their standards. They know their software and how it works. Now take a custom rom, one that has be frankenstined together. How do you expect a company to properly troubleshoot and diagnose a problem that could very well be related to the customer software?
I totally agree with the laziness part on the Tech Reps, after working with the company for several years, Id have to say most of the reps were less educated or technically minded about the device that they were working with. I could not tell you how many times I would hear customers complain about the Tech Reps.
Going to a hardware issue, Custom software would not break the screen, blow a speaker, or otherwise cause physical damage to the device (with the exception of a battery). So these should have no effect on hardware warranty's or exchanges.

I'm curious to know what 3G speeds you guys are getting. (I know it varies by location/coverage) but still.
Two Tips:
#1, make sure the Donor Phone can be read, in some way, even if its alternate methods, otherwise you're screwed.
#2, If you're flashing an Epic to any carrier that isn't Sprint, it's BEST to uninstall systemupdates.apk.

For months, I have sat on my EVO 3D, because I was not able to successfully write the HA, AAA, and the DMU stuff correctly to the phone to get the true 3G speeds. Granted, all Verizon MVNOs are capped to begin with, but using the EVO on 1X was not an option for me. Thanks to justan00b's guide, I will give this a whirl on Saturday and see how it goes...
Thanks again man!

I'm not sure if Verizon phones are any different, but on other prepaid carriers, the keys are much more difficult to read than others, so say the user following your guide tries it out with a phone that locks up and won't allow you to read the keys, they have a bad investment on their hands. Without the possibility of 1x/3G internet.

Thanks for the detailed tut. The best so far for flashing to st. Gonna give this a shot once I get my vzw phone, should be here in a week. Will post an update once done. Wonder if you can get higher 3g speeds by using the full throttle tut posted here. Might give that a try when done.
It seems like with most things there are many ways to accomplish something. I just today flashed an EVO 4G over to ST. This is the second one I have done. First time I used a Handsfree Activation method because I did not have a VZ phone to activate an pull the data from. This time around I have a Fascinate and used a similar yet actually much different method then this. Im kicking myself because the first time around I searched like crazy and found the proper MMS settings and APN that got my MMS fully working, and well...did not save the info so now once again Im searching for it...lol. Now I know the HTC and Samsung MMS works differently on ST, but contrary to most peoples belief...the native MMS CAN be fixed and function 100% on the Samsungs. I have seen it personally working and am trying to get in touch with the flasher who set the phone up. If he gives up the secret I will post it here. If he doesnt then Im either going to try and track down the phone I seen working and see if the guy will allow me to take a peek into the settings and backup and pull a copy of the APN....or...lol...Im going to just send the flasher a Sprint Sammy and pay him to flash it. Then I can just pull the info from my own phone. Stay tuned to this thread...I will be posting the fix.

There is a Q&A section for a reason buddy, This is only for Development.
You can call Sprint and add Hotspot to your account...instead of violating the ToS and being one of the people who help put an end to unlimited data. If $20 more / month is the difference in bills being paid or not, then maybe cell phones aren't your cup'o'tea.
Respectfully, I disagree. This is the development section and this mod SHOULD be under development. Why it isnt, I still dont understand. It is a mod people want regardless of how anyone feels about breaking ToS, which by the way, is a rediculous argument.
I dont see this being under the dev section as litter. It should be developed, and have ongoing work if needed, just like any other Rom or software for the sprint G2.

I agree to the degree that there should be a subforum for requests, I think it's more a reason of organization then just ToS. But I understand where you are coming from. If it were up to me, I'd also create a thread about unlocking the phone's GSM capabilities, which imo, is also a pretty important part of dev.
Just get foxfi it works on every phone. Google has the pro key, I'm sure, for you people that don't want to shell out the 5 bucks.

It's not a "rediculous" argument..nor is it a ridiculous argument either. You talking about circumventing -- purposely, in order to gain something for free that is a paid service. This should be discussed right along with IMEI switching and ESN switching...because it falls into that category. If you're gonna steal, do it right...steal the phone, circumvent the bad/blacklisted ESN and go all-out to get some free data.
I've had this in every ROM I put on my GS3 and even my old Optimus S...and never used it because I didn't pay for it. Was it unlocked? I guess so, it was in the menu...but it wasn't something I wanted to break my morals in order to use.
People want this then they wonder why carriers want to increase prices and charge more / add data caps. This is the exact reason.
This is a development thread not ? Thread.
I will ask to close this thread

The reason data rates go up is called profit, not users circumventing something they DO pay for, unlimited data, on a phone I own and control the software on. Keep drinking the koolaid believing that data os expensive. I worked in the hosting business and web search industry of well over 15 years. I can go buy backbone bandwith right now for $0.003 a GB. Know your facts please. Research actual bandwidth prices and you'll realize why mobile providers make so much money on data. Margins tell it all.
Debate over. This should be about development and facts, not opinions.

This is the Development section. Request belong in General.
Benny that was kind of my point. There should be a thread for this in development. Putting things in general hasnt helped sprint development at all. Things are being lost in there with every other carriers stuff.
If roms are in development even when they arent complete are allowed here then why other under things like tether mods allowed here? Should there be a thread for requests under sprint? Maybe so. However other handsets forums on xda have devoted sections to specific carrier version. Why doesnt the G2?
Personally I cant find much under general, or questions, that helps me with the ls980.
If anyone can look into this I put it into development as to find a permanent solution so far I have tried foxfi and a few others and so far no dice the one I have can't turn on the access point...

So, what's your stance on Verizon's tethering policy? Before, you had to pay for it no matter what plan you had. Now, if you're grandfathered in to unlimited data, the took the option away. If you're on their tiered plan, it's now free. They've taken away the option for people who could use it effectively, and given it to people who will make them money if they try to use it in any serious sense.
Now, looking at it from another perspective, the ability has been built into my phones in the past so I don't have to use their software. In those cases, Verizon is not allowing me to use my phone as it was intended. While not a violation of the LTE purchasing agreements because they still provide 3G, it is a loophole that they are taking advantage of. As long as they provide service other than the LTE bands purchased, they can prohibit us from using our own tethering apps indefinitely without being sanctioned. How is that fair? In essence, they are robbing me of the ability to use my hard/software as it was designed. Unlike them, I don't have expensive lawyers or lobbyists in Congress' pockets.
Deodexed version V8 to be uploaded tomorrow by our lovely devs. This next weekend, if work doesn't have me too long, I'll take a look in the files and see what I can do.
