Hey guys, I love this community. I would like to seek some insight before I make a decision.
This is my 3rd samsung vibrant.
All previous ones oc no problem. But this one fc's and freezes. So I'm guessing it's a hardware issue.
I'm out of the buyers remorse period already. But if I wanted to get a warranty exchange is it worth it? In other words, will the phone they send me suck more then what I have now? Will it be a refurb?
I'm just looking for some personal experience or insight on the matter.
Thanks everyone.

ya
yes it will be a refurb.. only time you get a new phone is do an insurance claim. will it suck?? who knows.. that the luck of the draw.. good luck
Thanks for the quick reply. I really appreciate it. Hmmm. This 3rd phone was brand new too but look where it got me.
So long as tmobile doesn't save all the declocked vibrant s for warranty purposes only, I should be able to get one that is superior to my current hardware.
In addition to having a crappy core, this phone has a very insensitive touch screen. drastically less sensitive than my two previous vibrants.

Wondering what happened to your first two "brand new" Vibrants that worked perfectly?
Not all phones can handle being oc'd, and when its forced on them they hang constantly. From the manufacturer's standpoint there is nothing wrong with your phone as its not meant to be oc'd. Flash a froyo rom, and overclocking the phone (and unnecessarily stressing the hardware) will be the furthest thing from your mind.

Good Q.
First phone, bricked after ji6 update. No dl mode. No recovery node. No odin. No screen. No vibrant. No galaxy s. Nada. This was by all means the first ever bricked vibrant. Lucky me.
Brand new one.
Phone 2,
Wifi wouldn't with without data reception. Inherent hardware defect. Flashed a million things on there and same problem. Also it was hardware locked, as I couldn't get into recovery. The buttons did nothing upon startup. So back to the store to exchange.

They don't need to know that. To be fair you didn't answer any of my questions, but thanks for the input anyway.
My goal us to find out whether I will be able to get a better phone that cash be overclocked or if I'm doomed to receive inferior hardware, that's all.

I guess I was thinking too karmically. Claiming it does not work because it won't do something it wasn't meant to do in the first place not only cheats the company but continues to drive the prices up for consumers because of returns such as what you pose here. Companies have to eat the cost of "defective" hardware thats not defective at all, and those costs trickle down.
Off my soap box now. You will of course do what you wish, just offering a different point of view.
Sent from my Vibrant running Macnut R10
Hmm your point is well received.
So let me put your curiosity at ease then.
1. capacitive touch screen and buttons at the bottom are nonfunctional sometimes, and other times, completely unresponsive despite the rest of the phone working.
2 . Screen has pixelation while loading up programs, this is on stock rom too.
3. Strong pervasive smell of plastic permeates the phone. Like something is burning up in there.
4. And I can't overclock.
So, knowing the above, I'm confident you'll agree with me that a warranty exchange is in order. I.e. I'd be killing 4 birds with one stone. Now, I just wanted to make sure that I don't exchange my brand new piece of crap for a worse off used piece of crap because I did buy the poc, and albeit defective, is still a new piece of crap, and mine.
And if it could be OC'ed, then I'm in luck!

I get ya on the refurb device, I wouldn't want one either. On this one, i assume you have applied the oc kernel and scripting, and then oc'd and experienced the issues you are having. Did you then remove the scripting and flash a different kernel? If you didn't undo the changes you made to oc in the first place, its my understanding you will still have issues. You could even try to odin back to stock and see if that fixes the feeezing, and load your rom of choice from there. I tell ya again, the current froyo builds need no oc or lag fix for that matter, they are blazing fast.

If you plan on keeping the phone get a SquareTrade warranty. They are pricey but usually they have a 30% coupon floating around. Saved me many times in the past. Well worth it IMO.

Okay as far as reverting back to stock, I had to disable voodoo, then I flashed another kernel that works, such as the jacs kernel or the r3 tw rom.
But as far as scripting, I've never had to do that. So maybe I'm missing something here. Can you point me in the right direction?
Thank you.

Its a little difficult to grab the link cause I'm on my phone atm, but depending on what oc kernel you used I believe some require an init script to be placed in a specific location on the phone for oc to work. Thats what i was referring to, but if youve flashed another kernel or back to stock, i dont think it matters. I could be wrong, not interested in oc'ing again so I'm not keeping up with those kernels any longer

Ic. I've used the TW r3 oc kernel. 1.0 works perfectly, but 1.2 spazzes and freezes on me.

Yeah, just saw that Samsung posted the announcement via Twitter. Wonder if it actually works.

DJ05 works, not something that resets your GPS values.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I saw a comment on the article that it could be Samsung planning an update that requires the default settings for GPS to work properly. Why they wouldn't just have the update reset the data is beyond me, but it's a possibility. I'll just stick with DJ05.
I have to agree about DJ05. Incredible improvement. If I put my Fascinate in my windshield mount and start the GPS, it's locked on, and giving me directions by the time I back out of the driveway.
Have to third dj05. Gps is now spot on. I get a 15 second lock every time. Also get twice as many sats to lock in now than I did with di01.

No one is withholding anything silly. Its just a matter of peoples jobs and such.
Google is your friend , your phone os, and your means of information. I bet if you spend like 5 mins searching you will be able to find just about anything you're looking for.

I installed it, works perfectly fine...

the logic problem with this is that if Samsung (who I strongly suspect knows about the leak) really wanted to find the leaker they could just as easily as any one else go to the IRC and obtain it. Not trying to be obtuse but are we really protecting the leaker by talking about, alluding to how to get it but simply not posting it ? I doubt it.

BTW; I'm back with my Incredible, which locks instantly, until the GPS is fixed or an easy to find, easy to install fix is available. Over all I prefer the Fascinate but the sucky GPS is a deal breaker.

The primary reason that it's not posted here is that the update may never be an official update. Since there is a risk in updating to DJ05, as well as going back to DI01, it's better to keep it where it currently is until the update is official or something else that is newer/better comes out.

And I'm not seeing a link to the downloadable file in yours. Adrynalyne your Omnia ROM is still on the phone in the old phone drawer and I have the greatest respect for the work all the devs do. I wish I had the skills and time. I am capable of understanding the risks involved in modding my phone and consider them in every instance.
The dj05 leak is not readily available, the reason that has been most often offered is that the leaker will be put in jeopardy if it is. I don't agree with that logic. That is the only relevance I was hoping for.

This makes much more sense. Minimize the access to the less skilled. In my case I think I could find it and install it. I choose not to probably because it seems less supported then makes me comfortable. So the logic and the result are proven.
I'm good now. Thanks
Engadget just posted a story on the two major issues of signal loss and rebooting during calls.
Maybe with this Google will start to fix the problem? I sure hope so, as both are now affecting me more than ever.

They must also fix
1)Choppy browser with and without flash.....
2)Random freeze of the gingerbread launcher...

I think it was posted that the reboot fix was coming, but not the loss of data.
Maybe I am just a lucky one, but I have had Nexus S since release and have only had a "random reboot" once; and no data signal loss issue AFAIK like Engadget has described. I have owned three Nexus Ss.
There are other issues, though, making it clear 2.3 is not bug free.

Weird. I haven't had a single one of the issues described in any form. However, the browser issues do make me angry.
Glad there is a hotfix on the way (for the issues mentioned, that is, not necessarily the browser issues)!
The only issue that regularly bothers me is the vanishing ringtone one. It's not exactly critical from a utilitarian standpoint, but I think it's stupid that I should have to root and move files around my phone in order to set a custom ringtone. Still, I'm far too happy with pretty much everything else to switch.
I think one major sticking point with the Nexus S is that we have a fairly lengthy list of at least semi-common issues, but in several cases it's not clear whether those are hardware- or software-related. This is troublesome because the latter may be reasonably expected to get fixed in OTAs, while the former will probably only ever be resolved through workarounds, if at all.
I would be very pleased if Google were more transparent about what it's working on, or at least aware of, even if they (understandably) don't want to commit to fix dates. As a user, just knowing the basic nature of these problems and that they are being acknowledged would go a long way towards improving customer satisfaction in my book.

Yay. I can confirm the following bugs after using OTA ED01 for a couple hours:
1) 50% time w/o signal bug still there. Still need airplane toggle after boot.
2) Browser scrolling choppy as ever.
3) Pop email client still snaps to top of list after reading each email.
4) battery issues / wakelock needs more testing
Now then, we know Samsung and VZW were not working on fixing any bugs in the last several months that they have been sitting on this code. All bugs from froyo leaks 2.5 months ago are still in there.
Seems to me there was 0 priority put on this update, since it was delivered extremely late and still chock full of bugs. My assessment is Samsung is way understaffed AND integrating bing caused some negative interactions between the companies involved. I won't buy another Samsung... and probably should move off of VZW.

We'll have to see how it goes fellow chicagoland resident. I odin'd and ota'd to get the new radio and frameworks and files were compared lastnight and there is some differences in the frameworks between EC01 and ED01 so I'm gonna run themeless until I have time to port my theme over to the new frameworks. Initial impression I have is my data speeds are a little higher and more constant. But I'll give it a go traveling about the city today.

My wife and I have this phone. I am running EB01 Superclean and I just odin'd her phone to stock last night and upgraded to OTA ED01. So far, no time without signal bug, browser does not seem choppy, no wakelocks so far. Maybe you should odin to stock and start fresh if you have not done so already. I think that this can fix a lot of issues. No doubt that after brief testing my Superclean w/ -100 imnuts kernel is kicking the snot out of a stock ED01 froyo so far. But I always give it a week for the battery to calibrate and settle so I will report back.
i also have superclean 2.9.2 (nv). i'm not sure if i want to go back to stock and do the official ota because I finally LIKE my phone for the first time since... November? I really liked it for the first month (Oct) when I thought the OTA was due any day... but since then, not so much. but after installing superclean a week or so ago, suddenly i don't care about the ota. unless i hear from one of you more experienced gurus that it's the way to go, that is. I love that I don't have all that bloat on my phone. If i do the ota, I presume the bloat will come with it, and I've heard of people then cleaning up the phone... how is that different from what I already have? should I stay put or is there a distinct advantage to doing the ota and then cleaning it up? any advice and logic behind it would be appreciated. thanks.

Exactly, if it is indeed defective then by all means get an exchange. But if it just running slow then it can prolly get fixed with a flash. I process so many warranty exchanges that in all honesty there was nothing physically wrong with it. A simply odin to stock fixes them.

And if you are willing to try, check my signature for going back to stock... files and a guide for you.
Random restarts, GPS still doesnt work at all, light leakage on buttons and screen. Ive tried numerous ROMs and I am still having issues with GPS. Ive went to stock and while it fixed my problems with restarts, stock was just to laggy so I went back to custom ROMs, GPS still doesn't work.
I am also having signal problems. Me and my friend bought a vibrant the same day and we have tested in the same room that his gets better reception. In a room where he has H, I am only on Edge. This isn't a problem with the ROM because we are both running Bionix.
If there is any way to fix my GPS/Signal issues then by all means tell me and I wont send my phone in for a replacement.
EDIT: Thank you guys for the help. Could ROMs effect signal/GPS? Like I said above when I compared with my friends phone under the same conditions (same room, same ROM) i was only on Edge and he had H. I've tried Trigger, MIUI, and CM7 and still don't have 3G or H in places my friend does.

Thank you for the input I'm glad you gave me some good information as to fixing my phone/getting a replacement.
ROMs COULD be a reason since they have different modems... but if you guys were on the same rom and didnt change the modem, then no....
I have best luck on KB1.
I would ODIN to JFD, root, Flash Trigger and see how your signal/gps goes... if not great, flash the KB1 modem over it (dev section) and see if any better.
If you look in my tips/tricks (first link in signature) there is a fix I do for GPS. Sometimes on a new ROM when it DOES NOT work, I have to do that to make it work. Other roms, it works right after flashing... no real rhyme or reason.
If you want a new phone, i am certain you could get one based off what you said already..... but I would not be surprised if you could make it 100% right.

not to mention the refurb you get could have the same problems or worse.
Refurbished is what you will get, there are no more "new" Vibrants.

For gps try this http://www.intomobile.com/2010/07/21/t-mobile-samsung-vibrant-galaxy-s-gps-issues-fix-tutorial/
I am using stock KB5, it helped me get a lock in 15-30 sec.
edit: I did mess with gps.conf from hd2 forum, dont know if that helped too.
