GPS Restore Program - Fascinate General

Androidcentral just posted this article talking about a GPS setting restore program that Samsung has released. Link is below for any who are interested.
http://www.androidcentral.com/samsung-releases-gps-restore-app-vibrant-captivate-does-it-work
Note: It was originally intended for the Captivate so use at your own risk

Yeah, just saw that Samsung posted the announcement via Twitter. Wonder if it actually works.

DJ05 works, not something that resets your GPS values.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App

I saw a comment on the article that it could be Samsung planning an update that requires the default settings for GPS to work properly. Why they wouldn't just have the update reset the data is beyond me, but it's a possibility. I'll just stick with DJ05.

I have to agree about DJ05. Incredible improvement. If I put my Fascinate in my windshield mount and start the GPS, it's locked on, and giving me directions by the time I back out of the driveway.

Have to third dj05. Gps is now spot on. I get a 15 second lock every time. Also get twice as many sats to lock in now than I did with di01.

No one is withholding anything silly. Its just a matter of peoples jobs and such.
Google is your friend , your phone os, and your means of information. I bet if you spend like 5 mins searching you will be able to find just about anything you're looking for.
good luck

I installed it, works perfectly fine...
I'm kidding. I don't think it applies to our phone.

the logic problem with this is that if Samsung (who I strongly suspect knows about the leak) really wanted to find the leaker they could just as easily as any one else go to the IRC and obtain it. Not trying to be obtuse but are we really protecting the leaker by talking about, alluding to how to get it but simply not posting it ? I doubt it.

BTW; I'm back with my Incredible, which locks instantly, until the GPS is fixed or an easy to find, easy to install fix is available. Over all I prefer the Fascinate but the sucky GPS is a deal breaker.

The primary reason that it's not posted here is that the update may never be an official update. Since there is a risk in updating to DJ05, as well as going back to DI01, it's better to keep it where it currently is until the update is official or something else that is newer/better comes out.

And I'm not seeing a link to the downloadable file in yours. Adrynalyne your Omnia ROM is still on the phone in the old phone drawer and I have the greatest respect for the work all the devs do. I wish I had the skills and time. I am capable of understanding the risks involved in modding my phone and consider them in every instance.
The dj05 leak is not readily available, the reason that has been most often offered is that the leaker will be put in jeopardy if it is. I don't agree with that logic. That is the only relevance I was hoping for.

This makes much more sense. Minimize the access to the less skilled. In my case I think I could find it and install it. I choose not to probably because it seems less supported then makes me comfortable. So the logic and the result are proven.
I'm good now. Thanks

Gps and lag update scheduled for September 20th.

FYI, I'm a T-Mobile employee and just received a mass email from my DM who was emailed from our Samsung Senior Territory Manager about the maintenance fix for the Vibrant. It's scheduled to roll out on the 20th.
As most know, there is an update coming to fix numerous issues effecting GPS, Google maps, Outlook, lagging and freezing, etc. This will be that update.

Awesome. I'm sure you will be mocked and etc just cause that's how this forum works, but I'd say it sounds like that would be on time and feasible. Ill believe it.... lets keep hoping.
I wonder if the leaked Rom floating around on Samsungs website is the fixed Rom?
If thats the case then its a patch fix and no mention of 2.2 huh?

I bet it is, just a quick patch. 2.2 will be mid next month I'm guessing. I bet the leaked rom is it, or very close too.....
And as a reminder to everyone, just because you pick up your phone in the morning and you have a nice dialog stating that tmo wants to push you an update, don't get excited yet. Don't install it until you have read from the devs here that it safe to do so. Remember, with the G1, some of the later updates made it harder to root and whatnot. The devs here will have answers very quickly (often within hours), so here is one place where you do NOT want to be the very first person with the update.
I'm just sayin'
Skip
smashpunks: where do you come up with such a guess? nothing indicates they have/havent started with the update, how far along they are, if they ironed the bugs, or anything. lol people like you are funny.
mrgibbage: you cant stop that, if and when an update is released, who knows if it will break root. if it does people will flash and an influx of "how do i root ota" will begin. even with a sticky readin "no root for ota"
The way it worked on the G1, was sure, the update was released. But not everyone "gets it" at the same time. You would get a notice on your phone that a new update was ready to install. But you did not have to install it. You could cancel it (or maybe you had to reboot your phone). In any case, you do not have to take the update when they push it.
Maybe things are different on this phone, but it seems to me it would be a safety hazard if they "forced" you to update when they say. Think how much it would suck if you needed to call 911, and you go to grab your phone and it said "standby while we take control of your phone for the next fifteen minutes".
I'm not worried about it. 89% chance of it being the one we have leaked out now which roots the same exact way. I don't know why people refuse to flash it if they can. It's really good and I don't feel the slightest need to work my nerves with something that doesn't work right like most or nearly all of the roms in the development section. Stock+Root+Bloatware apps removed=waytogo.

Nice to have a date. Given the proximity of the release, I agree that there's a good chance that the leaked rom is exactly the same update that's going to be pushed.
I'll be happy as long as it gets fixed by December 12th, 2012.

TMO hasn't released an OTA yet, but 2 new firmwares have been leaked that you can flash to your phone that fix GPS and lag issues.

T959UVJI4:

Or you can just flash the GPS fix from T959UV12:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782242
I agree T-Mobile sux on this update thing, but as others said, screw them and do it yourself.
I haven't had a GPS issue since JI2, actually I suggest flashing bionix rom. Its the **** has everything included. Not 1 issue here.
Also Eugene's is awesome too.
Or just flash the GPS files lime others also mentioned.

Thats not true. Tmobile is delaying the update because they are including the new UMA/WiFi Calling feature for android and making sure that it causes no problems. out of all the carriers tmobile probably has the best update quality because they actually take their time and make sure everything works out on the update. (Example) look at AT&Ts captivate update, it messed up a lot of phones and bricked a few in some cases.
At this point I'm just pissed. I don't care about updates. How about them fixing what's broken and then concentrate on an update. I know people are saying do it your self, honestly I just don't want to risk a brick and I haven't the time. I've said before... I can wait for 2.2, just fix what's broken. Please.

Well if you want t-mobile to release an official update so you dont have to fix it yourself then you are in the wrong forum here. Most people here are modders and dont mind a little tinkering. This topic would be much better suited for the t-mobile forum.

Why do people ask questions not even based on fact? The captivate update was a bug fix, didn't have the GPS fix in it and was poorly done.

we need newest (newer than dk28) modem.bin

10-char!!!
n00b,
I love your work. You're an amazing developer, you're a nice guy, and you contribute a lot to these forums. Everyone likes you and you're somewhat of a legend around here.
However, to have someone to leak you unpublished work from a huge corporation is incredibly risky. The NDA's that people sign are pretty iron clad that if they leak information, they won't be able to have a job anymore. Their trust is completely lost if they get caught and they'll have trouble finding work elsewhere. They might even face jail time and fees. That's how serious this stuff is.
I'm as anxious as the next guy in order to get the new modem, froyo, and other mods. However, if you're REALLY interested in developing... why not join the machine? AKA try to get a job with Sprint, Samsung, Motorola, HTC, etc.? You can use all of us for references! Seriously, why not turn your hobby into real money with a career with them? To program for Android in the Bay Area would net you atleast over $100K a year!

As someone who works for a large corporation, I can tell you that the companies in question probably have people just as good as n00b employed with them (not to take anything away from n00b since his work around here has been awesome). The problem in these large companies isn't talent (IMO) as much as it is the RED TAPE. Some of the red tape is needed, but probably like 5% of it.

You know, you could probably just edit the CDMA parameters and be done with it... I know that my radio problem is that it picks up towers that are too weak into the "active set" and that it is a recent common Samsung problem on several models. They tweak it so that it will utilize too low a signal level in order to decrease the number of "out of service" states as well as decreasing its apparent time to ready.
I just don't know how to do this on the Epic, and am waiting to see if the official 2.2 update fixes this. I know it started with the DI18 update, and persists with DK28, and disappears when flashed back to DI07. My brother's Epic which for some reason has never updated from DG17 (and he doesn't care to do it manually) and does not display this behavior.
On the A900 years ago it was easy with QPST. Actually, come to think of it, my Sanyo 8500 did it too, and I fixed that one as well.
... bump....

Sources would be 10000x harder to leak than a phones zimage, modem, and /data/. Soure is held in a source control mechanism (git) internally usually, and unless the leaker is a dev, they probably don't know what to get. And if the leaker is a dev, they probably only have access to their piece of the project. Places I've worked in the past have been so anal bout what parts of source I see/have access to that I couldn't even tell what other features other devs were working on.

Fascinate Gingerbread leak, what does that mean for us?

So, the Fascinate recently had a Gingerbread leak drop..... Since that phone is our phone's brother, do you think we will get it too...... Eventually? What do you guys have to say?
Btw: I am still on Vacation for another few days... When I get back I am going to recruit some graphic artists or whatever on xda to see if they can photoshop a quick green wave, or some other color that you guys like... Because I suck at graphic designing... It shouldn't be hard for anyone interested, because they can just use the template from the original blue wave.... Hopefully xD
Btw2: did you guys see the continuum softkey topic on the front page a couple days ago? D

i would think the continuum would follow the fascinate with gb...however given the rather poor sales of the device (by all accounts a commercial flop) verizon/samsung just might not feel like spending the r&d on it...but im hopeful for u guys they would
I find it unlikely we even get Froyo, yet alone GB. Furthermore, I find it unlikely any developer is going to work on porting GB for the Continuum with the Fascinate leak.
Verizon isn't going to pay Samsung to update this phone. With such low sales, it's more cost-efficient for Verizon to forget about us than it is to release updates. Business is business.
Obviously I could be wrong.

Pretty much this. It's not going to happen. I've given up on ever getting an update. As soon as my job picks up (FINALLY) I'm selling it and getting a charge or x2 or something.
No expert here..but willing to venture
Did the update, it worked with out a glitch.. was able to root using superoneclick from xda..worked if I did not allow it to install busybox, when I did for somereason my phone wouldnt charge? Which btw adding busybox never popped up before when using superoneclick to root other androids...so far so good.. so far the changes are minimal.....a few extra settings such as font...but nice to have all the same..oh netflix works from the link provided with the leaked instructions...could be a tad scary to flash using ogdin..but it works.
Wait you updated you fascinate with this or your continuum?
I was actually just going to ask something too. If the big problem with modding is the ticker and everything else with the fascinate is essentially the same...can't I just update with this and noir have the ticker work or will the absence of ticker support just kill the phone?
I have tried before to install fascinate odin files on our phone... Didn't work xP The graphic drivers are different, so you can't see anything xP

I figured it would be a no... could we not just c/p the modules for the drivers and over write the ones for the fascinate? They aren't compatible. The drivers we have are for kernel 2.6.29, and the Froyo kernel is 2.6.32.9 (the .9 doesn't really matter to much) and Gingerbread is 2.6.35.x Somewhere betwee 6.29 and 6.32, there was a huge change to the kernel source, and I'm guessing any drivers built for the Eclair kernel we have are not going to work well on Froyo. The Fascinate Froyo source works to build a kernel, but the initramfs sucks, and it isn't something that is easy to troubleshoot really, and I don't have time right now to do so.
Thanks ImNuts, really. I have until about my birthday, July 1st, until I start reteaching myself programming and building it myself. Least I can do is try lol.

If you can get the kernel working, you should at least be able to get most of the system to Froyo, based on the Fascinate releases. The ticker would be an absolute no-go IMO, but you should be able to get the soft-key button images on there.
At this point I don't even care about the ticker. It doesn't work for 90% of what I want to use it for anyways. I would rather just have a phone capable of Froyo use haha.

root suggestion

I'm sure this was probably already suggested but instead of trying to fool/force the bootloader to go s-off or something, why not try this (warning: stupid content ahead) You could actually push a known exploitable source such as flash (wait until latest update, flash is known for being better than swiss cheese when it comes to holes) and trying to get that to have an arbitrary code injection. Why not instead of treating it like android and linux, just treat it as linux.
I'm not an android dev but I was just offering thoughts.
Or you could even just start poking through apk's that are allowed system level access if there are any without root and make an apk to gain system access to break in by tricking the file system?

I left the more accurate points made by the OP in the quote.
If you're no dev, then this is not the place to be posting.
......
Well its good of you to post ideas and sorry this section is full of flamers

I don't think it is appropriate to insult someone for offering suggestions, regardless of whether you feel they are right or not. Progress does not exist without new ideas, which more often than not, are wrong.
Try some helpful input instead of just being rude.

no need to be rude...
It's not really rude. Just kind of accurate.

I'm just offering suggestions. It actually was rude.
Cover your phone with gorilla glue, put a mixture of seeds on the glue. Dig a 12 inch hole and bury your phone. Water it everyday for 6 weeks. Dig up your phone and shazam! Rooted

Psh, 6 weeks is too long. Just nail the damn thing to a tree. Technically, rooted.

I like your method. Is this the final result of your attempt at root. Or did this non dev poster hit too close to one of your ideas and you want to discourage him before someone else beats you to it.

This is actually quite funny and I think someone needs to open a new thread in the gen. forums along the lines of android/phone jokes... we need some good humor now and then (along w/ the dirty minded stuff)
edit* sorry this has nothing to do with OP
rofl this is why i love my xda fam, the good and the bad its all funny,
but to stay on topic:
This has more than likely already been thought about so as android is android,
and java is java, and linux is linux, programs without root access are sandboxed, and only programs with root access can run as root, and if user does not have some way shape or form access to the superuser then there is no way there can be any permission changes to anything above the current users, or programs sandbox, if that makes any sense....

Free thinkers are dangerous
Since no one answered I'll take a shot. There would need to be a permissions escalation exploit in flash or other app for this to work. Others have thought of this for sure already and you first need to find an exploit in flash or some other app.
Likely if any exploits do exist no one knows about them. We don't need people to suggest the idea at a high level. We need people to search and find such exploits. Or figure out another way.
It's either a waiting game or buy a new phone.

That's because sprint and HTC monitor these threads 100% OF THE DAY. in fact, I know for a fact that a few of these guys that talk on here all the time are employees and little rats. they won't come out and say it because this is what their job is. to monitor us.
Send the Information to a few limited dev's and wait for a response.
ACTUALLY!!!! I think another way to do this is to make a thread*not thread, but like a folder/area we can make threads* and put a lock on it to prevent anyone under 300ish posts from even reading them. :-D then that thread will only have the smarter guys in it or people that have been around for a while. :-D
LMAO!!!! okay, now to do what I just said not to do....... okay, so tell me guys. where does the OTA get saved at? That certain object has root. Is it possible to send us an OTA over the radio over our OWN radio? you know those radio booster things they send customers when they are too far out for service that the customer hooks up to their wifi? I wonder if it is possible to hack that and get it to think you're downloading a new OTA but really would be changing it to root. lol. actually. I honestly think that would truely work.
I didn't really word that right. but I think you guys get the point. I know it is possible. cause think about it. if the thing is going through YOUR OWN network... you control what is on your own network. :-D therefore, you could tell it anything you wanted it to know. :-D
Yeah, but wouldn't the image you push as a fake OTA need to be signed like everything else? Maybe we could trick the OS into installing an older OTA, but even then I bet it would give an error about the version being older.
Still, anyone know how one could try to trick it? I believe the updates are stored in cache, and otherwise I don't know how the system knows that there is an update downloaded and ready to be installed.
