Last night, the internet at my house died for some reason while I was watching a show on netflix. I decided to see if I could stream what I was watching through my N1 via wireless hotspot. I was able to finish my movie on my laptop, and there wasn't a single interruption!! However, it sure does eat up the data plan. I just looked at my data usage, and I had used about 450 MB to stream the program and download a large file at the same time. While that is a lot of data, I love being able to stream via my N1!! I am almost tempted to cancel my home internet and just use t-mobile's data for my internet access, but I reckon that I would get throttled back after about 5 days into the billing cycle since I watch A LOT of things on Netflix.
Anyway, I love this phone. That is all
Dude watch out... Carrier apps that tell you usage are not that current... My buddy watched a couple streaming movies and went over 4 gigs! Just be careful... And yes mifi is awesome as well as our n1s!

Holy crap, dude, are you serious?? Maybe I SHOULD cancel my comcast internet! I don't know what the official cap is. Some people say 5, others have said 10 gb. Let us know if you do get throttled back.

I didn't use any app to get my data usage. I just looked on my account usage on t-mobile's website, so I am willing to bet it was pretty accurate
if i get throttled down to edge i'll report back

BS!!!
As someone that has Netflix as their main TV source, I know that even a little TV watching (eg 2+ evenings per week) will easily result in 20-30GB of data!
If you watch every evening, as you claim, for 2-3 hours you might break 100GB.
No way a mobile carrier wouldn't throttle you.
Throttle Work Around
I hear theres a throttle work around :
simms22 said:
there is a way around that throttle that doesnt involve anything difficult or technical. heres how you do it... change your settings from to 2G only(edge), let it connect, then when you see data flowing connect back to 3G. this seems to work for a majority of the people that try, some unfortunate people cant do it. i used to keep a 2G/3G widget on my homescreen so that i can use when needed. now i just use the per widget from cyanogenmod since it has the option. ive been doing this since january without any problems

Rogers doesn't have unlimited data. Their best plan was 6GB/month. You'll pay every bytes over the 6GB threshold.
Yeah man... It blows... Got charged 11 bucks for under a mb

I got throttled after heavy net/video/audio streaming (they send you a txt). Watch out.
Well, I think getting throttled back is much better to the alternative of getting charged for data usage.
I been using my N1 hotstop to get on xboxlive and play video games online, and it works just fine, no lag at all.
The limit is being changed November 3rd to include either a 200MB ($10/month) plan or Unlimited ($30/month for 5GB, throttled after 5GB) plan.
They're also going to begin charging for Tethering and Hotspot, it WILL NOT be free anymore....which is ****ing ridiculous. If we're paying for unlimited data, so long as we're not going over our 5GB/month limit, why the hell should we pay additional for tethering/hotspot?

That's fair. No extra charges.
It is unfortunate, but it was inevitable. As long as there are no extra charges, 5 GB of 3G speed seems fair. Blame everyone who abused their connections >:|

I agree seems fair. Att is going down hill fast.

Oh wow, that would REALLY suck. I definitely go over that easily every month. I have never come close to 5gb though. I'm on AT&T right now with a grandfathered unlimited plan, so I'm ok (for now).
At least the TMO unlimited plan is still unlimited, just at a slower speed once the 5GB is reached. With other carriers charging for overages, I'm not sure how they (the other carriers) can get away with calling it "unlimited".
im guessing this doesnt affect tzones ($5 plan) users... since when i goto my account, even if ive been using over 2gb of data that month, it says ive used zero data... im guessing this is because everything is going through a proxy

can the proxy setting be used for other data plans to bypass this data cap? I normally use 6 to 8gb per month as the tether is my only internet access.
The 5GB limit is fair. At least they don't charge you for overages like ATT. My buddy has a 200MB plan because ATT f-ed him when he tried to grandfather his unlimited data plan from ~3 years ago. Now he makes me turn on my N1's hotspot whenever we hang out.

My jaw nearly hit the floor when I read that, and then read people complaining about it
I'm around 1.5-2GB per month right now and don't believe that I'll ever read 5GB unless I start downloading huge files all day! I believe this is the right way to treat customers compared to the "big two's" plan. Also, I'm a loyal T-Mobile customer for 7 years now.
I can live with 5GB limit...but they better never change it again to any lower

The whole process took less than 5 minutes.

Thanks for the info fmedina2, im new to the evo and everything 2, but since the link is currently not working. If I root my phone is there a possibility my phone could break or not work properly?
Sprint really doesn't bust users for pulling down hotspot quantity data-activity without paying the $30/mo Mobile Hotspot fee ?
I put 2.1 back on my friend's phone. Now he gets to use the sprint hotspot for free. For some reason he doesn't like free tether, but I do.

If you root then apply Calkulin's usb tether fix, it will also make the native Hotspot app work. The fix disables authentification for both wired and wireless tethering.
Personally, I think that the way these phones hog data out of the box that it would be hard for sprint accuse you of unauthrized tethering unless you were doing something like using the phone as your primary internrt connection.
I cancelled my comcast as soon as I got my evo. I've used it for XBOX live, webbrowsing during the day and leave it on to torrent over night. Sprint hasn't said anything to me.

Hey your paying an extra $10 for extra bandwith so use it. Why pay $40 more now to stream on your phone..hey AT&T is 15 a month for dsl a year...so it may be right but it ain't smart..... The reason I came to Sprint is because they allow it, and every rep I've talked to knows this. What good is the ability to push unlimited data (which, please, most people here can burn 11GB in a day, let alone a month) if you're morally restricted to limiting yourself to the competition's tiers anyways? Sprint's angle against the Big Two has been unlimited data for a long time now, and they're not going to switch it. If they do, I can promise you that the reason is NOT some guy using PDANet and watching a lot of streaming football while he's at work.
My 2 cents: our ten dollar a month 4g fee....covers truly unlimited data, at least that's how sprint justifies it. Even though I have used upwards of 9 gigs without ever touching tether. 10 or 15 is not that bad, imo.tiered plans are a scare tactic . Att feels the pain of that already. Hardcore users have started jumping ship now that they realize 2 gigs is nothing the more they use their phones.

You're right in that 2GB really is nothing nowadays. Sprint offers On Demand television, live sporting events, and devices with screens big enough to actually utilize these things; and when Netflix comes to Android, do they really think users will stay within 2-5GB?
Even without Netflix or tethering, Evo can burn through caps like noone's business on push alone. The phone was built and marketed as a multimedia powerhouse - stream HD, refresh your FriendStream every 15 minutes, push the news, get your email, upload huge photos from your 8MP cam, all within a few swipes.
It makes sense for Sprint to cap the non-premium data users, and just use that as an incentive to make $10/mo from that many more customers. But seriously, companies really should start focusing on making the network's capacities better - not limiting the consumer.

I second that!!
We aren't losing unlimited bandwidth. We pay extra for not having 4G in our areas aka a 'richer data experience'.
This is that richer data experience. Tether it up.
I know we had a thread open, but no one definitively came forward to say they received the notification. I am wondering if anyone has personally been served a tethering notice for non iphone, android use, or for excessive bandwith usage on the unlimited plan which many of us have, or will have thanks to the Iphone2g loophole: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1008698 for more info.
I use my Atrix to tether almost daily. A co-worked also uses my connection. I use about 4-5 gig per billing cycle and never got anything from ATT. This usage started with my iPhone and Netflix. I can't wait until it is available on the Market. Until then I want to use about the same so there are no hiccups.
I have hit 10 gigs plus each month with my atrix and tethering. I use it for everything. Xbox live 2 computers and an ipad. Never been hit by ATT for tethering or excessive bandwith usage. I have also received 150 off my last two bills due to ATT not being able to provide HSUPA.

I reached 20GB from downloading Torrents, Streaming Netflix on my XBox, playing online computer games, PSN, and XBL. (One at a time).
That was last month and I haven't gotten a warning of any sort.....
When I play online it doesn't lag if I only have one thing connected at a time.
I used it for halo reach. It worked really well. Im sure it will be even better with hsupa. That was in raleigh nc getting around 1.5 down and 3.3 up.
Packetloss and upload we're undetected. NAT was moderate. Seemed like games took a little longer to load. Playing cyrsis 2 the lag was a little more noticable but still I can't complain. this is such bull****.. they throttle you if you hit top 5% of users in your area... so eventually they force you to use much less data... then eventually everyone starts using less data, and then the 5% mark gets lower, so then your forced to use even LESSER data, and so on and so on. When is this going to stop? When everyone uses under 2GB?
i mean come on, seriously, WTF.
i mean it's a good measure to prevent people like you or me from using too much data. i mean, they don't expect you to use 10gbs on a mobile device. and I was pulling at least 30gbs monthly on a connection topping out at 1megabyte in my area (600-1000kilobytes per second usually). I don't blame them for throttling at all. I do blame them for thinking that I wasn't using all of that data on the mobile device. My data usage came pretty much from illegal piracy and random netflix and pandora sessions however they still believe it was from tethering so that's why i was knocked on that plan. It's hard to explain how all that data was being used w/o saying that I pirated a bunch of stuff during those months. so yeah, just be careful what you're doing with your phone, they will cut you off if you are consistently bad. If you can't take it, then switch networks to someone who offers inferior networks with unlimited data.
On the other hand. I live in California east bay... Have used1.5 gigs. I have received a warning that I'm nearing5%.. So I feel scammed.

Were you downloading movies on your phone? or streaming them from your PC? I use a ton of netflix and I have a few TV series that I stream from my PC.
My problem with being throttled is the way they are doing it.. the top 5% in your area will get throttled.
At first it may sound fair, heck, I live in MA where the top 5% puts me at 10 GB. but like i said.. once everyone starts bringing their data usage down, then the 5% cap is going to get smaller and smaller and smaller, then we'll have people getting throttled for using 1GB a month! You get what Im saying? It's BULL ****.
Eventually I will be switching carriers once the throttle point gets to about 5GB. Which.. given the way things are going, it would be about a year.

well damn dude, I was just streaming tons of video from my home media server. I abuse my FiOS connection must like my ATT connection.
I just got off the phone with ATT. Throttling will always be determined by top 5% of users in the country. There is no number that is available to tell us what the top 5% will be, so we're just gonna be at the mercy of what everyone is using.
The rep couldn't tell me if the 5% took account just unlimited users or Tiered data users as well. Either way --- if the top 5% is using only 1gb, we are S.O.L.
I refuse to pay $60 for 5gb of tiered data, highway robbery.
I will continue to stream music as much as I can in an effort to raise the 5% cap for other users. otherwise, we're gonna get throttled at 1.5gb.
T-Mobile is now throttling those who use excessive amounts of data on the "unlimited"
http://www.reddit.com/r/tmobile/comments/342wr7/tmobile_is_now_throttling_unlimited_data/
This is probably what everyone gets because of those hacking their wifi tether and thinking it's okay to use their cell phone as their home ISP. :good:.
Apparently they've always reserved the right to do this in their TOS, but are just recently starting to enforce it due to heavy abuse.
Update:

I've never passed 20 gb on my plan on the 2 years that I have tmobile. Even when I was tethering when I didn't have WiFi. Be a nice civilian and let us eat! Lol sometimes my speeds are not even 1MG and people with 60mbps I'm sure are the ones that do it the most. Lol..I'm just saying people.

i get why they are doing it but they also mentioned the top 3% of heavy data users. Last time i checked i used 31gigs this month and I have not been throttled yet. Ive seen as far as 60 gigs. I admit, i do download stuff time to time but i never watch tv. I stream all my music while at the gym, i stream netflix/other media apps to my chromecast when at home so yeah, i do use a lot of data. What i dont do is mess with my tethering. I have wifi at home. If i were to be throttled, i would pitch a fit as i would think this isnt fair to discipline a user for using a lot of data when they pay for unlimited.

Dude you pay for unlimited of course your going to use what you pay for lol. I also pay for unlimited(extra $20 a month) and if my speeds where actually good I'll probably be at 25 to 30 GB of data lol but I have WiFi at home.

I watch maybe 40 hours a month of Netflix at work. Take a guess what that adds up too. I don't have a WiFi network off an ISP at work.

Um, I call BS on this reddit post.
This has been happening since last year when they announced it.
The throttle "improper" usage. I think it's a good thinG because too many people abuse it.

Haven't seen a problem.
I did 50GB last month. Currently at 20gb or so. We have 3 lines unlimited Data on Family Plan.
I'm unlimited and rarely use 10 gigs. Just pay for the moments when a WiFi isn't around. I've tethered maybe 500mbs a month, don't see a problem with that. Those using huge amounts for their home should be throttled.

I don't think they're throttling people who are using a ton via legitimate means.
The note did say they will throttle those who are using massive amounts of data via means that are in violation of the terms and conditions of use.
People using hacks to get around tethering limits are one of them.

Nor do I but they might be, at&t did but then again at&t are a bunch of worthless ass hats
Did 132gb last month legit + illegit. No problems there. I did see the hotspot screen a few times but that was it. Don't intend to keep it this much though
Tmobile signal in my area took a dump, called and complained mainly because my signal at work disapeared completely and HSPA+ is non existant around work, only LTE and edge, but LTE signal sucks for going into buildings.
Called Tmobile and they tried to blame my data usage for it....lol.
Was their "advanced repair" and they seem to have 0 idea how it works...*sigh*
