[Q] Difference between Odin stock files and Nandroid backup? - Fascinate General

I have a rooted SF with CWM and Voodoo lagfix and battery mod. VZ bloatware moved to SD card and using LauncherPro+ instead of TouchWiz..
I'm still not very clear in one area. If I need to undo everything I've done, what would I need to do?
Disable Voodoo first then use CWM and restore stock Nandroid backup?
Or .. use Odin and flash the stock images?
What's the difference between the stock Nandroid backup and the Odin stock images?
Thanks for the clarification...

Strange problem restoring nandroid backup

I rooted my Vibrant a week or so ago.
I flashed an update.zip and installed Clockwork Recovery Mod.
I immediately took a nandroid update of the stock, rooted system.
I tried out the AOSPish 1.4 Eclair rom (stock kernel) from the Development section, which works quite well.
My problem is that I cannot restore the nandroid backup I took before flashing teh AOSPish rom. I did a data/cache wipe in Clockwork, restored the nandroid backup, and it hangs at the Vibrant boot logo.
I can restore the AOSPish nandroid backup just fine.
I'm pretty sure it wont work...you have to Odin stock JI6 then restore your JI6 nandroid
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Fair enough. I'm happy with the AOSPish rom anyway, just wanted to see if it could even be done.

Does it matter if i do my nandroid backup on CW3 or CW2?

CW 3.0.0.5 or cw 2.5.1.2?
Does it make a difference which I use to do my nandroid backups? I'm using Nebula which still requires flashing in CW 2.5...so that's why I ask.
Also I did a backup yesterday in each, and when I tried to restore from both they both said md5 checksum fail. I had to restore from an older backup. What would cause that?
Did you rename the backup? That messes it up.
I dont think the CWM version matters, I restored a backup from 2.5 in 3 after an upgrade
Yeah I renamed them. thanks for the answer on that.
When renaming don't use space and keep it simple some characters don't work (for me).

Not sure how it's done on the epic side of things, but nobody does nandroid backups in the captivate, vibrant, or i9k forums. Clockworkmod doesn't save the modems or kernals and such all the time so it doesn't back em up. Therefore you can be restoring a rom over a bad kernal flash, or incompatible modem, ect. Just keep the cw update.zip on the sd, odin to stock, use titanium backup to restore apps. Android ID changer to restore id and your good.

NAND Backup question

Quick question, when I do a nand backup on the Fascinate, does that backup the kernel as well?
I know on the eris, if I was to flash a new rom and kernel, and didn't like that rom, all I had to do was wipe the data and cache, and restore the backup and I would be done, is that the same on the fascinate?
No, all it backs up is the rom and your data.
On a related note, is it possible to do a backup of the entire phone (ROM, kernel, data) so that it can be re-flashed / recovered via Odin?
I had an issue last night where I had to restore an old backup with CWM / ROM Manager, because of a buggy and unstable kernel that I had installed. And the phone was completely unstable / unusable after the restore from backup. I had to flash back to complete stock DL09 via Odin, and was wondering whether there was a way for me to create my own Odin image if this happens again.

Clockwork restore?

What all will a clockwork restore bring back? I did a full backup through immediately after I gained root access (after I had just done the ota e28 update). Now I'm on superclean 2.2 voodoo-ed. Will it undo the voodoo that's on my phone our should I not use the clockwork restore for that? Thanks in advance.
You'll need to disable voodoo and reboot so the file system will be converted back to rfs before restoring or flashing a nonvoodoo kernel. Otherwise you'll be making the trip to Odin town to get your internal storage memory back.
So if I want to install superclean 2.3 nonvoodoo then, I would need to disable voodoo, and reboot first (while still on my 2.2 voodoo) in order to have it reset the file system, and then reboot and flash 2.3 nonvoodoo or is a reboot necessary? Thanks for the quick help.
You need to have nandroid backups for voodoo and non-voodoo. You can't restore a non-voodoo backup to a voodoo rom etc... But if you have the correct backup stored, performing a advanced restore / data will get all your data and apps back they way there were before your wipe / new rom installation. Works great.

[Q] Odin or restore?

I have a n900w8 running cm11. I need to go back to stock.
I have a nandroid of my stock rom and was wondering if i can go back using my backup or if i need to use odin to downgrade?
Just want to make sure there are no issues with bootloaders etc if i restore my backup.
Thanks
Well as technically Nandroid backups are just a clone of your previous OS you should be able to flash it just fine, BUT you should not. Cause in doing that you will face several problems, multiple apps force closing would be one of them. So yes, just wipe the phone first, I mean a complete wipe, then flash a stock ROM of your choice via Odin, root, then restore apps with their data manually using Titanium. I mean the option in Titanium which says install the missing apks only, just hit on that, not the whole system wide restore, cause that will create problem too.
I don't know what model is that though, I have a N9005, so what I said might not even be applicable for your model.

Better to flash the latest stock firmware for your device via Odin.
and restore app(s) later.
