Samsung will not be announcing Froyo for US devices via their Samsung UK press office.
i9000 is the only galaxy s in the uk, no? which would makes sense that it would be early nov for them in the uk, then all operators (everywhere) by end of nov.
edit: actually reading the press release makes it seem more dubious that they would mean all operators internationally
I'm with the OP.
The Android 2.2 software is being fully tested with UK operators and the upgrade will be available in the UK from early November. We expect all operator versions of the software to be fully tested and downloadable by the end of November.
Even if you didnt know anything about the topic, you can easily understand operators=carriers and by them specifying UK Operators I think that pretty much makes it easy to understand. Why hate anyway, for those waiting for OTA and Source code it's better news than nothing.

Yeah. Once you actually read the release (doesn't sound like Engadget did) it seems kinda clear.
Its about perspective.. If Samsung issued a press release out of Korea or their US headquarters that said "all operators" would have the update by X date, then it would cover the US. But when Samsung UK issues that statement.. There's no reason to think it would apply to America.
There have been many misleading posts where naive readers read announcements about the "galaxy S" in Europe and wrongly apply that to the U.S. variants. This is another unfortunate example.
Engadget, reinforcing my low expectations of its shoddy journalism, also fell for the same error today. Their story says "presumably including the Vibrant, Captivate, Epic 4G, and Fascinate) by the end of November." Presumably? What a joke. All they have to do is call Samsung for confirmation.
The Engadget writer, Chris Ziegler, is particularly brain-dead. He authored several "articles" about the GPS problems on the Galaxy S phones and never got anything right.

Hopefully some clarification comes at minimum to put this thread to rest. When Google and Apple announce devices on US soil, they also usually give the release dates for all the Int'l carriers too. So why is this different. I guess we'll find out. Either way, its a good thing.

Google and Apple are US companies, so when they make an announcement in the US, it's from "headquarters." But if they were going to announce a product intended for Japan, for instance, they wouldn't do it in the UK.
That's why Samsung (Korea) making an announcement in the UK regarding US products makes no sense.
It will get here when it gets here. We don't need 50 threads about it. I'm more inclined to believe the UK statement is a UK statement. When it comes out of T-Mobile then I'll believe the timeframe.
Blahh,blahh,blahh......and more blahh blahh blahhhhhhh......
agreed that the article makes it sound like US galaxy's/Vibrants, but i think they mean/or are mistaken that it is european galaxy's and not Vibrant....

No, it's not just you.
They all think they have the definitive info and shout it as loud as they can and have all been wrong every time, so far.
It's like they trying to be important, rather than just passing along information.
If the OP made the title, "Here's a 2.2 Article, what does this mean?" this OP wouldn't look so bad, but that wouldn't give him the feeling of being as important.
Just flash eugene's new froyo rom if you're so desperate It works great with the exception of minor issues and you'll be able to finally download that shiny new Gmail app and use the wonderful Voice Commands and you're good to go.
BTW, Samsung's galaxy S support site for the U.S. on Twitter is still saying there is no ETA for Froyo on this side of the pond.

That Twitter site is dedicated to Galaxy S support in the United States, which is what I meant by "this side of the pond." (The Samsung USA rep was responding to a question about Froyo here on Vibrant, and confirmed in the previous tweet that it was rolling out overseas.)
If Samsung dangles another carrot in front of me about Froyo on my Vibrant, I'm going to set their Korean building on fire.
I believe they have my Froyo!

This is for the international Galaxy S (i9000). There are people in North America that have them so it makes sense to push the update here. We are going to have to wait for T-Mobile to push it.
This does give me hope that it is getting closer though.
It actually sounds promising. ..we might get it before Christmas.. and, yes t-mobile sends the OTA, but guess who makes the updates...

You must be new to this.
Unless they specifically refer to our devices, they're not including us. North America i9000 devices more likely refers to the Canadian Vibrant which is closer to to the standard i9000.
There are some significant differences between our devices which would preclude us from being included in the i9000 rollout.

Thank you! This guy is so one sided he does not see that it does not include us.
First, the official press release states "Samsung GALAXY S." It does not say only I9000, it just so happens that they are the first to get it.
Secondly, our phones are still "Samsung GALAXY S" phones, or have you forgotten? Just because they slapped a label on it does not mean it does not fall under the Galaxy S line.
So Samsung's press release states that their Android 2.2 GALAXY S update is ready and will begin rolling out to a North America and the rest of the world. Are we not to assume they our phones are Galaxy S phones, that we are in North America, or even part of the World?
Be a skeptic all you want, but these updates are not far off. There was already a Froyo leak for the Captivate so they were being worked on. Whether or not T-Mobile does an OTA doesn't even matter at this point. Once it is leaked or released from Samsung then we can have it on our phones in some form.
And thanks for calling me a noob, oh bright and genius one. Hope it made you feel better.

Bottom Line.
you people arguing over the way this update will come are missing the point.
This means the devs will get to see a galaxy s froyo rom and it will help them out immensely. CM and others who have been having trouble getting froyo to run on our phones will be able to look at this and use it as a sort of road map. Who cares if t-mo or samsung will be releasing an ota or kies update for our vibrants? The vast majority of the people here aren't going to be satisfied with a stock rom.
Lets just say its coming for my questions sake...
If I rooted the Vibrant and didnt change roms or do anything fancy, will it receive OTA updates? How do OTA updates work w/ rooted phone?

Ok, you're right. Hey guys, listen to Blader. He knows best. We shouldn't expect Froyo until sometime next year because that's how long it is going for them to modify the 2.2 code. We know our phones are completely different from the original so basically they have to start all the way over from scratch. I'm talking Linux. Hopefully they will be done with the process before 2012. Don't expect any leaks anything or either. Samsung doesn't do that.

Yes you will still get the OTA but probley loose root.
As you probably know last Month that Samsung pulled-out the froyo Update files of the Samsung Galaxy S from its servers due to Many System Bugs that Made the Android froyo unstable and laggy. And Samsung UK confirmed on its twitter Status that the Froyo Update is Coming on November on its Final Version and to All Network operators and No More Delays...No More pulling-out!!
We Got Some Information that the Release Date of the Galaxy S Froyo update for USA Carriers and UK Carriers is somewhere around 11th November,2010 as a FINAL Release Date. Worldwide release will follow in few days after the Official Release of the Froyo ROM for Samsung Galaxy S, which Means that All Galaxy S users Worldwide (Include Middle-East and Arab gulf users) will get the update on November along with UK,USA Carriers too.
So The Update is Coming Finally and NO More Delays AT ALL... More Stable... More Smoother, its a matter of time right Now. As I always say "Waiting for the froyo to come-out, better than waiting for it to load!".

Why would you think that? There is no news of the USA versions getting the update anytime soon and I bet the international version will be one of the first ones to get it. Just follow Samsung Mobile's official twitter accounts. Those are the only places I can trust with so many sites reporting this or that with no evidence.

It’s been confirmed that Samsung’s pushing out the upgrade to Android 2.2 to their Galaxy S and Galaxy A in their home turf of South Korea right now. (It wasn’t said if this included the carrier-specific offerings, so we’ll assume that those are excluded, for now.) Those on Vodafone may also be seeing the upgrade to Android 2.2 very soon as they’ve started pushing their specific upgrade out to their customers. This follows the widescale European rollout for unbranded/carrier-agnostic Galaxy S devices not too long ago. Be on the lookout for these upgrades and let out a big sigh of relief after you’ve received them. Then let’s hope Samsung gets things rolling a bit quicker for the impending Gingerbread release. An apology for what - all news we were receiving the past months were "unofficial sources" or rumours or "i know i guy who knows a guy who works at S", I never actually read anything official, e.g. on a samsung website.
Even though the news, which was "almost" official (samsung romania facebook), rejected an actual release date at the end of march.
Just stay relaxed, an update will come in a few hours / days / weeks / years
Kind regards,
ww
I don't know why people always think that they deserve an apology from Samsung or that they get bad software support. Does anybody here have a written (or otherwise) guarantee that Sammy is giving us GB at a specific time? I guess not...
I admit that the first Eclair ROMs were crap and the GPS could be better, but seriously stop the whining, it's like talking with little kids that want their candy! Just wait until it's done and if it takes two weeks longer to sort out some bugs, then so be it...
I agree....they should apologize for possibly not living up to "a friend of a friend said" rumors, or for changing their roadmap to suit the pronouncements off the cuff on the facebook page of a regional Samsung distributer in a small market?
Really?
Or because Tricky used what he felt could possibly be the final 2.3.3 (though from user reports if it IS final, to quote Ricky Ricardo, Samsung's got some 'splainin to do) to make a big entry into the ROM Kitchen team?
Somehow I don't think so. No apologies required, from anyone. Just patience.
To be honest, considering no source is released and there seem to be various problems/quirks with JVK, I would prefer they take a couple weeks and give us a much more ready for prime time version.
Relax, Gingerbread is coming...just be patient and enjoy your 2.2.1 Custom ROMs and be grateful again you aren't stuck with just a single flavor of iOS.

The thing with these web blogs and tech news pages is they all tend to get their "exclusive" news from the same sources which 9 out of 10 times are wrong. Case in point recent news quoting Samsung Mobile Facebook page which wasn't as it was the SamsungGalaxyS Facebook page which looked remarkably similar until you read the owner info. Something you would think they would check first really. Egg face say no more.

I can't see why people can't use their time anticipating the new release. It's not your time, obviously. Some people want to flash their phone with a safe, official firmware and want to know some ETA when it's going to happen. It's not like people are F5'ing every Android news site. Of course, this can hold but can't there be any speculation? It's up to XDA's moderators to decide, is this topic worth of discussing.
What comes to the first post, this is good news (if true) and in my opinion most reliable newsbit so far about Gingerbread. You shouldn't take it for granted that Samsung is liable to update its firmwares and "breaks promises" if doesn't. Operating as a company, Samsung's every firmware update is giving something to us, the customers. When people buy their phones, Samsung's is not liable to update firmwares if there's nothing critically wrong with it. Froyo is good but now we are on the road towards something even better. And it's a win-win situation to us.

Maybe because it looks like JVK is not the final release version and still has some bugs?.

you must have done somthing wrong then as I have no bugs at all been on it since saturday
I think even mid April is a tad optimistic. That's like 2 weeks.. and there's quite a bit left to fix and add. Together with the speed of which samsung works, I'm guessing May at the earliest.

Android central says all the galaxy line will be upgraded to gingerbread by end of may.
Is this for real?

yea i'll believe that one when I see it.
course with the new authentication exploit that hit for all devices under 2.3.4, maybe it'll force carriers and manufactures to upgrade quickly.
i9000 only. The Telus might get it in a month. Us? Don't expect anything until you see leaks.
The press release never said we'll get it by the end of May. It only says the US will get it after Europe gets it(which will be by the middle/end of May). It also said the US variants of the Galaxy S will get gingerbread according to the regional timeline. In other words, they don't know yet.

Crap, another accidental Thank instead of Quote.
Anyway, the Epic should be really soon -- weeks? -- since their second leak (EE03) is feature-complete and even carrier-bloated. The rest, who knows? I'm sure Verizon will be last though.
here we go again, this will be just like al those "froyo by this date" threads. just hang out in rc and wait for leaks. till then, dont count on it
Just for future reference: If Samsung says anything about 'Galaxy S', they are not talking about our phone. Galaxy S = i9000 (the international version).
Any release dates you see are a total lie if we don't already have a leaked version. Once we've got a leak, it's still highly doubtful, but at least not laughably so.

Point out where in the press release they said 'US' They specified North America, and they specified nothing other than it's after "the UK and Nordic countries".
Also, go back and look at what they said when they first rolled out Froyo to the i9000, and then look how long before it came to the US in any form or fashion (and then, the Fascinate even after that). If history holds, we might get it somewhere around the end of this year (although I'd imagine it'd be an even lower priority for Verizon now).

I am still under the belief that as long as Verizon tries to push Bing on the Fascinate we won't see a Gingerbread update.

US/Canada = North America.
Does Canada have an i9000?
Since we're seeing gingerbread leaks for the Epic, that may be an indication of gingerbread for our Fascinate. While Froyo still wasn't available for the CDMA Galaxy S variants, we were seeing leaks for the Epic along with the Fascinate during around the same time. If history repeats itself, we may see at least some leaks soon.
is froyo a requirement for gingerbread?
like when updating from DL09 it goes to EA28 then ED01/ED03. Why not directly to
ED0x?
if we see more versions soon, would this mean anything to us (other than just some fixes)
No release until its Binged and Bloated !
