We should have Froyo soon - Vibrant General

2.2 has began to roll out in Europe. Of course we know that they have the international version but I think people are neglecting to realize that their press release states "north america" will receive it soon as well. I think we all know what phones they are referring to.
I don't know about you but I'm excited.

People over the Galaxy S forum says the GPS/Lag is not fixed =\

My gps and lag were both fixed in JI6. I highly doubt they would take a step back.

I think you need to practice reading.
"The Android 2.2 upgrade wil be available from the mid of October 2010 in the Nordic region and gradually rolled out to other European markets, Southeast Asia, the Middle East Asia, North America, Africa and rest of the world."
That pretty much means all of their devices.

Guy, where the heck have you been? Samsung released the JI6 update for people to download ahead of waiting for T-Mobile. They release majority if their updates via kies and even made a special mini kies just for us.
Please, at least know what the heck is going on before you bring your skepticism.

This is for the international Galaxy S (i9000). There are people in North America that have them so it makes sense to push the update here. We are going to have to wait for T-Mobile to push it.
This does give me hope that it is getting closer though.

It actually sounds promising. ..we might get it before Christmas.. and, yes t-mobile sends the OTA, but guess who makes the updates...

You must be new to this.
Unless they specifically refer to our devices, they're not including us. North America i9000 devices more likely refers to the Canadian Vibrant which is closer to to the standard i9000.
There are some significant differences between our devices which would preclude us from being included in the i9000 rollout.

Thank you! This guy is so one sided he does not see that it does not include us.

First, the official press release states "Samsung GALAXY S." It does not say only I9000, it just so happens that they are the first to get it.
Secondly, our phones are still "Samsung GALAXY S" phones, or have you forgotten? Just because they slapped a label on it does not mean it does not fall under the Galaxy S line.
So Samsung's press release states that their Android 2.2 GALAXY S update is ready and will begin rolling out to a North America and the rest of the world. Are we not to assume they our phones are Galaxy S phones, that we are in North America, or even part of the World?
Be a skeptic all you want, but these updates are not far off. There was already a Froyo leak for the Captivate so they were being worked on. Whether or not T-Mobile does an OTA doesn't even matter at this point. Once it is leaked or released from Samsung then we can have it on our phones in some form.
And thanks for calling me a noob, oh bright and genius one. Hope it made you feel better.

Your right our phones are a Galaxy s phone.but its a sub phone. This refers to the build I9000Jpm, I9000 being the ORIGINAL Phone!
Bottom Line.

you people arguing over the way this update will come are missing the point.
This means the devs will get to see a galaxy s froyo rom and it will help them out immensely. CM and others who have been having trouble getting froyo to run on our phones will be able to look at this and use it as a sort of road map. Who cares if t-mo or samsung will be releasing an ota or kies update for our vibrants? The vast majority of the people here aren't going to be satisfied with a stock rom.

Lets just say its coming for my questions sake...
If I rooted the Vibrant and didnt change roms or do anything fancy, will it receive OTA updates? How do OTA updates work w/ rooted phone?

Ok, you're right. Hey guys, listen to Blader. He knows best. We shouldn't expect Froyo until sometime next year because that's how long it is going for them to modify the 2.2 code. We know our phones are completely different from the original so basically they have to start all the way over from scratch. I'm talking Linux. Hopefully they will be done with the process before 2012. Don't expect any leaks anything or either. Samsung doesn't do that.

not sure why it is taking so long since Verizon will have the Samsung Continuum next week which is already running 2.2 stock. or, at least thats what has been leaked.
Continuum is running 2.1....

I don't mean to be a killjoy, but I would like to point out that the way this press release is worded, I believe it ONLY applies to the I9000 model, which is the European Galaxy S. One reason I think that is because it states it will be available via Kies, which is not used for OTA distribution for the US versions. Also, every US version has unique features that have to be accounted for in developing the release.
Now, I'm not saying that we won't get Froyo in November, just that this press release from Samgung proves nothing in that regard. Due to carrier customizations, I'm waiting for a press release either directly from Verizon, or from Samsung that specifically mentions Verizon and/or the Fascinate by name.

The press release was misleading...
h t t p://w w w.androidpolice.com/2010/10/21/samsung-promises-froyo-update-for-all-galaxy-s-versions-in-november/
UK only in November
spaces added to http and www due to account limits
Yeah no one can really come away from that with any facts. Just opinions. I mean they do state it will be Coming to all variants of the galaxy s. The problem is the use phrases like "we expect it to be to all carriers by the end of November" not "it will be to all carriers by........" so that's a little suspect. Like I said in my last thread ill ever write about froyo for this phone, its sad that they put some of the most potent hardware ever made with the ****tiest software ever and the normal lackluster Samsung amount of support. Due to the support I will not buy another Samsung phone. I can't remember exact dates I've had all of the last 5 major VZW phones they released on launch day.(D,DInc,DC, D2, and now fascinate) this phone came out almost a month after the D2 launched with froyo? If the Galaxy S is Samsung's flagship what were they doing with all this extra time they took to launch it after all of the other galaxy s phones. Again camera is great, camcorder is awesome screen is amazing, GPU is the absolutely best available in a mobile device, and the use RFS and this bull**** software and the topped it off with almost a year old software in eclair? Wtf. Ill be keeping this until LTE comes out. Praying that one of the first LTE phones that comes out isn't Samsung BC then ill be waiting long. Anyway. Rant off. Here's to hoping and praying we actually see froyo sometime, if anytime on our phones.

I can't believe anyone still believes this yarn today. The Engadget story was debunked all over the internet yesterday, for example in this thread on the XDA Vibrant forum.
Basically, Engadget was wrong. Again.
The press release they based that on clearly came from the Samsung subsidiary in the UK and Ireland. The announcement's scope was for "all operators" there. None of it applies to the U.S. carriers. The Twitter sites for Samsung USA confirmed later yesterday that the UK announcement did not apply here, and reiterated what Samsung USA has said all along: Froyo will be deployed in the U.S. sometime this year.
Engadget is irresponsible, a day an a half later, for not correcting the erroneous story.

Canadian Galaxy S phones getting Froyo mid-December/early 2011 - how about us?

Samsung Mobile Canada has announced via Facebook that "Android 2.2 will be released for Vibrant from Bell and Captivate from Rogers in mid-December, and for the Fascinate from TELUS in early 2011. We’ll post further details as they become available."
http://www.androidcentral.com/canadian-galaxy-s-phones-get-froyo-update-news
Hmmm... Makes me wonder if USA variants will get Froyo before or after that deadline. My guess is after considering we have no set deadline, but hey who knows.
Lots of apologies incoming to the OP in that other thread where he said it was coming in 2011, Lol.
Samsung said that all Galaxy S variants would get FroYo this year. Way to go!
The TELUS Fascinate is one of the newest Galaxy S phones, it's model number is the T959D. That's probably why it has a release slated for later than the others. It's the newest one, they JUST started to sell the Vibrant w/ 8503G (T959D) AKA the Fascinate this month.
Samsung Canada making the Froyo announcement before US counterpart is a huge slap in the face for Samsung US, especially since Canada joined the Galaxy S game so late.
I personally do not care when the newest galaxy S phone was introduced. Samsung confirmed that ALL galaxy S phones will be updated with Froyo this year (2010). The Canadian announcement mentioning 2011 is an example of how creditable Samsung really is, while at the same time making the US branch the worst of all.

In this case Samsung should not use strong words such as "will". This is basic PR.
At this point it's probably more likely that Samsung will skip Froyo altogether in the states and go straight to Gingerbread. Especially now that the Nexus S is official and running 2.3.
As a faithful galaxy s user allow me to weigh in. Samsung is going to update us back to donut. **** them. I don't care what anyone her says it's rediculous that a "flagship" newly released line of phones like our gets froyo so late in the game. When we get froyo, it will be as obsolete as eclair is now. Believe me if u look through my 450+ post u will not see more than maybe one flame, but **** you Samsung. You are self ensuring that u will be ur own worst enemy in the smart phone game. Samsung probably looked at the dev section here, saw a bunch of Froyo ROM's and said: "Oh look it is out, what the hell is all commotion about?"

Date *kinda* set for Gingerbread's release on Epic

From ComputerWorld
"Samsung Galaxy S [UPDATED 4/7/11]: All signs point to Gingerbread being in the cards for Samsung's popular Galaxy S line of phones. That includes the Samsung Captivate on AT&T, Samsung Epic 4G on Sprint, Samsung Vibrant on T-Mobile, and Samsung Fascinate on Verizon (which as of now has yet to even receive Froyo). Rumors started popping up in January that some Galaxy S phones could see an Android 2.3 upgrade as early as March or April. Samsung's official Samsung Mobile India Twitter account, meanwhile, has stated numerous times that the Galaxy S will receive Gingerbread -- version 2.3.3 -- but that a definite launch date has not been set. Samsung's Romanian Facebook page has issued similar promises. In late March, software said to be a leaked version of Samsung's official Galaxy S Gingerbread update surfaced on an Android developers' forum, heightening speculation that a rollout could be near. In addition to all of that, Samsung's Finnish site has now posted a news release stating that Gingerbread will reach Galaxy S handsets "in mid-April.""
Another good article to read from Lifehackerwith a spreadsheet of release dates.
-Troll
lol "Troll".
Well, let's see, even if gingerbread were CLOSE to being released, don't think of the Galaxy S as a sign.
First of all, the Galaxy S is Samsung's MAIN FLAGSHIP device, AND Galaxy S's are only released in Europe, I believe.
So therefore, even if Samsung had a finished product of 2.3 for us by mid-april, Sprint's going to have to add their crap to it and **** it up some more, make it even more buggier than Samsung achieved, and send an OTA that will have to be pulled the day after it comes out because it'll fry people's phones. SOOO, if we WERE to get Gingerbread, I'd say by August-Mid September at the earliest.
Sorry for bringing your hopes down...just stating the facts.

Anyway, the Epic should be really soon -- weeks? -- since their second leak (EE03) is feature-complete and even carrier-bloated. The rest, who knows? I'm sure Verizon will be last though.
here we go again, this will be just like al those "froyo by this date" threads. just hang out in rc and wait for leaks. till then, dont count on it
Just for future reference: If Samsung says anything about 'Galaxy S', they are not talking about our phone. Galaxy S = i9000 (the international version).
Any release dates you see are a total lie if we don't already have a leaked version. Once we've got a leak, it's still highly doubtful, but at least not laughably so.

Point out where in the press release they said 'US' They specified North America, and they specified nothing other than it's after "the UK and Nordic countries".
Also, go back and look at what they said when they first rolled out Froyo to the i9000, and then look how long before it came to the US in any form or fashion (and then, the Fascinate even after that). If history holds, we might get it somewhere around the end of this year (although I'd imagine it'd be an even lower priority for Verizon now).

US/Canada = North America.
Does Canada have an i9000?
Since we're seeing gingerbread leaks for the Epic, that may be an indication of gingerbread for our Fascinate. While Froyo still wasn't available for the CDMA Galaxy S variants, we were seeing leaks for the Epic along with the Fascinate during around the same time. If history repeats itself, we may see at least some leaks soon.
is froyo a requirement for gingerbread?
like when updating from DL09 it goes to EA28 then ED01/ED03. Why not directly to
ED0x?
if we see more versions soon, would this mean anything to us (other than just some fixes)

THe Gingerbread 2.3 has started in UK

FYI
For those who missed it
Remember a Kies update was pushed 10 days ago (for those who actually use it)
Well the UK has been getting the 2.3 JVO version update for the last 4 days
http://www.techwafer.com/2011/05/18...-upgrade-for-samsung-galaxy-s-and-galaxy-tab/
Also the source code for GB was posted on the http://opensource.samsung.com/ ..... for the gt-9000 (euro galaxy phone)
Who knows when we will get it......... here in the USA
Wasn't there a thread a couple of minutes ago about a supposed official announcement from Samsung about GB on Vibrant? Was it deleted?
Anyway, As was already announced in the recent conference, we should be getting GB by the end of this month so...
all galaxy s series?
include T-mobile vibrant?
did it state vibrant?
The whole SGS line is getting 2.3, just the North America variants later than the I9000. The SGS of the article is the I9000.
The international version of SGS has no provider crapware. This is why they get updated ahead of the T959. I don't think TMO will let it out because if it does, their new android phones will not sell. Why would you want to buy a new phone that has 2.2 when you can have 2.3 on a already powerful enough, georgous looking phone?

End of this month? I doubt it.
Next month? Probably greater chances.
They give about 1-2Weeks of OTA/Kies updates usually.. so yep
well considering for 2.2 sprint was rumored to get it first, then all of a sudden t-mobile came out of no where with the update first. That's what i'm hoping will happen with 2.3. Sprint already has some leaked builds of 2.3 for the epic so we can only hope. But definitely should see it by the end of this month. If not we should harass google.
as i said before most of us will be on sg2 or hercules or other phones before we get gingerbread..the funny thing is i might be right
Wow I've been running gingerbread for almost 2 months now.
That's okay though when it does finally officially get released or even leaked for Vibrant we'll have every last bug out of Simply Honey while most others are just starting to dev on GB.

I'd be more apt to say .........July!!
End of the month has next to no chance of happening.
I still think it will be released by 2012, or maybe late 2011.

Knowing in the end that the only thing they added is a damn wifi calling and it took them 6 months.

Speculating on when we are going to get Gingerbread officially from samsung is pointless, it will happen when it happens. Until then we should just continue supporting our devs that have been working so hard to bring us 90% working gingerbread roms such as Simply Honey, Asgard, or CM7, and any others I may have forgotten.
