(this comes from my post in the 'Rogers, heres your real root' thread, using a combination of Haykuro's and Lunatik78's methods)
EDIT! now with Froyo (Android 2.2), I've tried Chromatic 4.2, 4.3 & 4.4 (based on Cyanogen 6 RC3), BiffMod, AOSP 2.2 OTA, Yoshi 1.8 pancake and they all work - 12 Jan 2011
EDIT: newer radio works great too - now using 2.22.28.25 and H-Boot 1.33.0013d - follow ezterry's thread after rooting and getting your new ROM running - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831139
*Please reply to this thread with feedback if you've used this method! (And please let me know if a link is broken!)
I've just re-rooted my South Africa HTC Dream and thought I'd share my successful method, it's actually pretty easy. Please note however, that the steps in this method must be followed EXACTLY otherwise will not be successful.
BTW the HTC Dream's were only released by MTN but as the phone is not carrier specific Vodacom, Cell-C & Virgin-Mobile will work fine too.
To unroot your phone and go back to stock, PM me for the link for the RUU
This will very likely work on the Rogers Dream as that is what the original how-to was based on, if someone tries it, please let me know so I can confirm it here!
Info from phone: (yours needs to be the same otherwise you might have problems, the important stuff is in bold - if you don't know how to find this info then STOP here, you need to search & read up some more to familiarize yourself before rooting the phone)

CPLD-4
RADIO-3.22.20.17 (or 3.22.xx.xx)
Jun 2 2009,21:33:16
Firmware: 1.5
Baseband: 62.525.20.18U_3.22.20.17
Kernel: 2.6.27-9af60ed4 [email protected]
Build: 1.87.421.1 146733 CL#47295 release-keys
Start:
Make sure your battery is fully charged!
This requires that you use SPL 1.33.2005. (this is safe on all rogers (or MTN) dream devices)
You need the Android SDK - get it here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
install SPL 1.33.2005 using this method: One Click Root for Rogers, come back here at Step 11 (see link below this how to install flashrec on a stock phone)
(See: Method to install flashrec (any .apk) on your Dream: steps-to-install-and-uninstall-apk-file-on-android-g1-device)
Check if you have SPL 1.33.2005 (to check, boot into FASTBOOT by holding Send or Answer and then powering the phone on, it should say HBOOT-1.33.2005 near the top)
IF you have it then proceed:
download givemeroot.zip
(md5: 4a58a5702fdf899547011888d9cc066f .. sha1: 99e38e4f8798e952e67421a42e7b053ea70957b7)
Extract the contents of 'givemeroot.zip' to the "android-sdk-windows\tools" folder
IMPORTANT: You have to put the rom you'd like to install (I've used Cyanogen's and SuperD's) in the root of your phone's sd card (a freshly formatted FAT32 SD Card) as well as the rom image "signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip" (MD5 checksum b3e12b004c155761a10b1a848288e0c3 - 3rd option - from here: http://developer.htc.com/adp.html#s3)
(YOU WILL NOT HAVE A ROM INSTALLED AFTER YOU COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING STEPS, YOU WILL HAVE TO USE THE ROM IN ZIP FORMAT TO GET ONE)
For Dream/G1 users: power off, then hold "send or answer" button & press power button until you're into "FASTBOOT" mode, make sure the words HBOOT-1.33.2005... appear near the top of the phone's screen!
NOW:
Connect the phone via USB to the computer if it's not connected already, 'FASTBOOT' should change to 'FASTBOOT USB'
Open a command prompt (Start>Run: cmd), navigate to your "android-sdk-windows\tools" folder and type in the following (hit enter after each line and wait for the 'finished.total time: x.xxxs' before continuing!):
fastboot flash radio radio.img
fastboot erase system -w
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
POWER OFF your phone (not reboot, power it off). (You can do this using the corresponding button [it says it on the screen] or just pull the battery [make sure everything is done flashing of course!])
(if you don't boot into recovery or accidentally rebooted, just pull the battery [if you notice top left it should read "FASTBOOT" or "FASTBOOT USB" if it's plugged in] you're not bricked, you just need to access recovery, not standard boot ;P)
Unplug your phone from the USB connection
Power up your phone in recovery mode (hold "home" + press Power). You should see that you are now in v1.4 + JF, that means you got the right recovery.
Select the option "Apply any zip from SD". Select "signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip", and then press the Home button to confirm. Do not reboot your phone yet!
Once that installation is complete, select the option "Apply any zip from SD" again. This time, select "update-cm-4.3.2.1-signed.zip" (or Cyanogen's current version, or your preferred ROM, I've used 1.6, 2.0, 2.1 & 2.2 ROMS, and then press the Home button to confirm.
When this is complete you'll see this:
Build: CyanogenMod v1.4 + JF
Formatting CACHE....
you may see "writing radio..." and boot back into the recovery but just reboot your phone by pressing Home & Back (or the trackball when "reboot" is highlighted). When you see "Formatting CACHE....", it's done, reboot now again (Home + Back).
The first proper boot of the OS may take a while (5+ minutes) then enjoy!
The newer radio image 2.22.23.02 works great on the SA HTC dream - I definately get better reception/more bars, I flashed it like this (In THIS order):
1) fastboot erase recovery
2) fastboot flash radio radio.img (get the img from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=640535)
3) fastboot flash recovery recovery.img (used Recovery-RA-1.7.0 from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566669) (no need for the "Recovery-RA-1.7.0R" recovery image!)
Thank you, your guide work perfectly on my phone
No luck here, unfortunately. I'm stuck at the Recovery Flasher. I get Flash FAILED: Could not run command. Could be that your kernel was not patched yet as the newer Rogers one is running HBOOT-1.33.0010 (DREA21000). Oh well, I hope someone finds a way soon!
If your phone info is the same as listed in the first post then this will work (if followed correctly). Anything different may require a different method, I suggest searching for a solution.

ok, so now i am desperate....
i have read and read and followed instructions in all the forums that google can generate using different keywords and everything about the issue. so i have totally exhausted the options i got.

i hve tried the fastboot method of rooting, but my attempts end when cmd give a remote- not allow error
so i have tried using the method above. i have successfully installed flashrec, backed up my existing image, no problem. so at this point i am supposed to shut down the phone and reboot into recovery, by holding the home button when powering up.
i tried using the reboot into recovery using the button provided in the new flash rec but nothing happens.
when i restart the phone while holding the home button, the HTC DREAM logo comes up and just freezes there. i have held the button for up to 5 minutes, nothing, i have also left the logo on for almost half an hour and nothng seems to happen.
Please help me out anyone? this phone is pretty lame as stock especially for the amount you pay for it..
sounds like you're not doing it to the letter, after installing flashrec it says "For Dream/G1 users: power off, then hold "send or answer" button & press power button until you're into "FASTBOOT" mode, make sure the words HBOOT-1.33.2005... appear near the top of the phone's screen!" NOT 'i am supposed to shut down the phone and reboot into recovery, by holding the home button when powering up."

Hi,
Thanks for great post on rooting your SA dream. I've been trying to root my phone for ages and have bricked it once.(But thank goodness leaf didnt released it and fixed it at no charge) So this time when I do it, I wanna be very sure.
When you say:
"You have to put the rom you'd like to install (I've used Cyanogen's and SuperD's) in the root of your phone's sd card "
Where do i get the cyanogen or SuperD's rom?
Scratch what i said before... i used Chromatic 4.5 rom and my build number is 1.86.421.1 146733 cl#47295 release-keys.
And it works perfect.
Thanks so much. Looks amazing
If you haven't figured it out already then you can get a ROM from one of the ROM threads in the G1 Android Developement section.
But perhaps it might be a good idea to do a little more reading as to why you would like to root and what ROM you would actually like on your phone, remember you can't just put any ROM on and may brick the phone again if you make a mistake.
You effin ROCK!!!!!
Worked like a charm!
Thanks Pardus! My HTC Dream is now like a new phone! I'm loving it!
Only problem I had was the rom image "signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip" from developer.htc.com/adp.html#s3 was either corrupt or just not dowloading properly. I got nervous at first when it didn't work but then googled the file name and downloaded another copy. I then mounted the SD card and placed the new file in the SD card root. It was all good from there.
Awesome!!
Excellent, doesn't it just give new life to our Dreams !
So far the 'Official AOSP 2.2 OTA test-3' ROM is working well for me as is the new radio and spl (2.22.28.25 and 1.33.0013d).

OK, you'll need to learn quick, read read read here on the forums. Mistakes can brick your phone.
To get a Command prompt in Windows (XP) click: Start, then Run, then type "cmd" (without quotes) then click OK
If you have the SDK installed properly then you can try typing "fastboot getvar battery-voltage" (without quotes) and see what result you get.
Okay I figured out how to use cmd, I'm running windows 7, now I have one huge problem, I type in the full name and everything with the "fastboot flash radio radio.img" then it tells me error: cannot load 'radio.img' what do I do now? Since I know I can't skip this step

I had Eng S-Off and not Radio S-Off and loaded LeeDrOiD 1.3 (containing HTC's new security "feautured" 1.72.405.3 ROM). Now I am permanently locked out from doing a Radio S-off and I cannot get R/W access to the system folder. Who knows what else root aceess is limited. PLEASE EVERYONE LOAD RADIO S-OFF. To make sure it's active look for more info or system info on the bootloader after installing clockwork recovery (hold volume down when powering on phone). It must say CID:111111. You don't want to see CID-VODAP021 or CID-HTC__001 or anything else. Anything then other than 111111 means radio is S-On!!

it would be the easiest way even thought I like to do things manually to be sure of what Im doing, but right now Im willing to try it out, the only problem is I dont own a Windows PC, only a Mac and there is no such software for Mac
Please read my first post carefully and see if Im doing something wrong because I've become immune to see my own faults now..
Done, had to barrow a windows laptop to get this fixed anyone looking for the answer check my sig.
Ok first off I am new to all of this. This Is my first android smartphone It's a T-Mobile MyTouch 3g. I just bought It off eBay and If I can't fix It then I am out some money PLEASE HELP!!
Have done some reading but can't seem to fix what's going on with this phone . I got It off eBay and the seller said It had problems with the touch screen every so often but other wise worked great In every other way but that Is so so far from the truth.
When you first turn It on It will boot up to the sim pin screen. I have gotten the touch screen to respond long enough to enter my pin once. It will freeze and reboot over and over. The track ball will work once In a while along with the home and back buttons.
I know It's running Superfly TCBY Froyo ROM and I think thats were all the problems are because It does work right every so often so I have been trying to unroot It and put It back to factory rom and settings and start fresh with the hopes that It will fix the problems but the problem now Is when I go into recovery to flash It or make any kinds of changes, It will freeze and reset. I can't even get the recovery menu to work long enough to do anything. Can someone please explain how I can get this phone back to original.
PLEASE HELP

OK well I did a search and have been doing alot of reading and I managed to get It to load a Generic MyTouch Rom w/Root because when I try to unroot to SAPPIMG Sapphire T-Mobile US 2.10.531.4 release i keep getting main version older update failed so I read to go to a Generic MyTouch Rom w/Root and try again from here
"theunlockr.com/2010/04/26/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-the-htc-mytouch-3g"
Still same problem main version older update failed. I can't create a Goldcard to try the Goldcard method because I don't have access to the phone to enable USB debugging. I can't do much with the phone because of the freezing.
I can get Into fastboot and hboot but It still freezes. So I know It's not bricked but touch Is still not working. can load the phone up but pretty much becomes a good paper weigh after a few minutes on. The buttons will not responded, no touch, no access to to anything Inside the phone.
What can I do? Is this phone worthless? Can It be fixed? I feel like I just bought a expensive paper weigh.
As I said before I am hoping that If I can get It back to original settings and rom that It will stop freezing, stop rebooting and the touch, buttons, and system will work right.. What do you think Is causing all of these problems?? No touch, Freezing, rebooting?? How can I get It back to being unrooted and running the original software/rom PLEASE HELP.....

when i flash the recovery and boot it just goes to the green mytouch splash screen and does nothing.. if i try to boot into recovery manually with power and home it goes to the black screen with the exclamation triangle and a phone...
I can still get Into HBOOT and FASTBOOT but I can not get Into the recovery menu and the phone will not load pass the MyTouch 3g screen.
How can I flash a new recovery img via hboot?
[What I "know"]
My understanding is that I have a Shipment SPL aka "Perfect SPL" with Security on which means I cannot use fastboot.
I also get a "Main version is older. Update failed" when I try to down grade and unroot.
[My Goal]
I want to change my SPL to a engineering one, unroot and get back to stock.
Your going to need to make a goldcard, which means you will need a phone that runs Android. Any phone running Android will work. You can use the guide from here to make it. You'll only need the other phone for Part III steps 1-5 from that guide. Once you get the goldcard made, put this file on it, boot into hboot and flash like you did the other sappimg. That will get you the engineering SPL. Then from fastboot, run this command:
Code:
fastboot erase system
Then, put this SAPPIMG on your regular SD card (or you can replace the other sappimg on your goldcard) and flash it from hboot. Hopefully something in the system partition is corrupted and the wipe will fix it so that the sappimg can write the new system properly.
First off THANK YOU DonJuan692006 for all of your help.. I would love to make a gold card because I think that would solve all of my problems but I don't have access to another phone that runs Android that's why I have not tried that yet. I have no way to make a gold card. I have extra SD Cards but no other phone that runs Android to complete It and my phone will not allow me to do any of that at this point. What else can I do?? Is there any other way to make a gold card?
I will have access to another phone that runs Android In a few days but until then I am stuck.
I have now made a gold card, got the engineering spl Installed and then tried to Install the other file and It gets stuck on system unzipping while updating and then reboots. what can I do now???
Were you able to do the fastboot erase system before trying the second sappimg?

No I was not able to do that. I have done alot of reading over the last few weeks and I still don't understand how to enter commands In fastboot. So thats why it didn't work?
That was kind of the point in flashing the engineering SPL. All you do is download the AndroidSDK kit. Extract it to somewhere you can find it. Inside of that folder will be a folder called Tools with the fastboot.exe. So you just open a command prompt from there and do the command in my other post.
So, if you were to extract AndroidSDK to the root of your C: drive (as I did), you would simply open a command prompt window by typing "cmd" in either the run box on Windows XP or the "Search" box in Windows Vista and 7, and then type
Code:
cd C:\AndroidSDK\Tools\
Alternatively, if your using Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can navigate in Windows Explorer to the Tools folder and launch a command prompt directly from that folder by holding Shift and right-clicking. There will be an extra option in the menu "Open command window here". Make sure that you don't right click on a file, right-click somewhere in the a blank are in the folder.

Ok, I understand. I have AndroidSDK Installed. Needed It to make the goldcard. I understand how to do It know. Thanks again for all your help. I will try again the right way and get back.

Do you still have the original vodafone ruu? Just install it again.
Did your handset ship with Gingerbread on it? HTC Firmware > 2.36.xxx.x?
If so there have been reports of newer hardware having issues with the older HBOOT (ENG S-OFF). This can be identified by very long boot up times 15-20+ minutes.
Try leaving your handset on to see if this is indeed the case. If so this can be fixed.

That didn't work.
Now im gonna try this method from this site but another thread.
-download this with ur pc and rename it a PB99IMG.zip (not PB99IMG.zip.zip ok?)
-then put it on the root of ur sdcard (not in some folder) through an sd card reader
-ensure the battery is charged much than 30%..better more
-with the phone off (remove battery and put again) press and HOLD the volume down key and press (still holding the volume down key) and hold the power button..hold both and wait to enter in the hboot
-there wait a bit, and it will ask to u if u want apply the update, select yes with the volume keys and confirm with power button

In the DHD dev link, you will find the RUU's , download that and run it from your PC, you should be good to go
thanks, i got it working!
Cheers to XDA members! =D
I know its an old phone now, but my friend gave me this one to update, and it took a while for me to figure it out (used to my Evo 3D)... so ive put this together to help anyone wishing to S-OFF and can't work it out...
*** This is for GSM ONLY. Don't try it if your not sure or you'll brick your phone ***
This is what I did to get S-OFF...
Download Modaco's SPL HBoot 1.76.2007 and move it to your SD Card.
Download Clockworkmod Recovery 2.5.0.7, rename it to " recovery.img " and move it to your SD Card.
Download UniversalAndroot and move it to your SD Card.
Download ES File Explorer from the market (or any other file explorer).
Download Android Terminal Emulator from the market.
Enable installing from SD Card.. (Settings -> Applications -> tick Unknown Sources)
Open ES File Explorer and install Universal Androot.
Run it and press Root ...
It should say.. "Woot ! Your device is rooted !" ... close the program.
Open Android Terminal Emulator, and type " su " . Press enter.
Allow SuperUser access.
Type " flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img " and press enter.
It should just show a $ sign on a new line.
Power off your phone, remove and replace your battery and press and hold the Home button while pressing Power.
Your phone will load into Clockworkmod Recovery.
Select " install zip from sdcard ", then " choose zip from sdcard ". Select " update-hero-hboot-1.76.2007-signed.zip ". Press Back, Back and " reboot system now ".
Leave the phone to update HBoot. Do not interrupt it. (It restarts a few times)
Once done, the phone will restart and load as normal. Check the HBoot version by going into HBoot again (turn off, hold Volume - and Power) and it will hopefully show S-OFF, Hboot 1.76.2007. Job done.
Great guide, very simplistic and understandable. Thanks for this!

Yeah, it was nice, now I just need a reason to get S-OFF
Greeting...
Since i have Rooted my Hero and Flashing ROM, I never knew we can/must do S-OFF.
I'm a bit curious...is it necessary S-OFF for Hero? Any advantages?
From my little understanding it just to make control of our Hero's partition.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
S-On (Security-On) - is HTC's final resort for locking certain parts of the phone.
With S-On, the NAND section of your phone is locked and will fail to install software (and sometimes gain root access) depending on which ROM and phone your using. On some phones (not sure about Hero) you have to install a separate boot image with fastboot to let you install a custom, non HTC ROM, as it isn't from a signed HTC source.
With S-Off (Security-Off), you have full write access to all partitions on your phone, can gain permanent root, and all ROMs / boot / radios / recoverys should install successfully.
It doesn't appear that most Hero users need S-Off to allow you to install custom ROMs, but as I wanted to update the radio version, I chose to.
my hero has a hboot with s-on, and i can update radio images. If u want, i can upload the hboot i have..
I have given the Hero back to my friend now after updating...
Things have changed between the Hero and Evo 3D, but when I use something, I want to have full control on what I can do, not to be forced into not been able to do or access certain things.
Although, I can understand why HTC implemented Hboot Security, careless use with S-Off (flashing wrong images or disconnecting too early) - and you will brick your phone.
thanks this guide works perfect for my htc hero
I think I'm lucky, then...
I have a GSM HTC Hero bought back in 2009 and just recently heard this S-OFF issue.
Only recently I checked and my boot loader is in S-ON state.
However, I never had a problem installing whatever I wanted on it.
In fact, the phone was rooted a few days after buying it and it remains rooted as of now! I even had to re-install the official HTC 1.6 firmware because I installed a non-compatible recovery ROM...
I wonder if any of this has to do with the fact that I purchased it without a SIM lock...
Working great! Even if you are on 2.1 use the 1.5/1.6 option in androot. otherwise rooting will not work. (even though it says "Woot blabla")
Hi im getting flash_image not found in the emulator am stuck please help.
can i just ask what might be a noob question about this whole process...
once this phone is rooted and has s-off will this open it up to putting any network sim card in it? i do have an old htc hero but it's currently locked to t mobile uk as it's an old contract phone.
thanks in advance..
S-OFF allows you to execute certain commands and gain access to the NAND partition of the phone.
In order to unlock your phone, you must buy an unlock code somewhere (I've heard them being about 5€, correct me if I'm wrong).
Thanks for the explanation. Appreciated.
To be honest I'm a bit surprised that there's not a way to remove the sim lock through another method. Having played around with unlocking my sensation and flashing cyanogenmod it just seems like there's nothing you can't do with these phones these days..!
Thanks again..

So was I when I had to unlock my first LG years ago.
"unlocking by unlock codes is the safe way to unlock.." source
There are many topics about unlocking a T-Mobile Hero for free, but with no success. However I only found a topic about unlocking an Orange one.
Can I S-OFF using this if i rooted installed CWM and flashed CM9 already ?
I'm having the 'flash_image not found' problem too.

I tried it again, but still S-ON?
I put hboot image on sd card, removed battery, put it back, went into recovery RA1.7xx, flashed hboot zip file.
It did few things and asked me to confirm it with "HOME + BACK" button, which I did, then again it did few things and then booted into recovery, showed as if its finished and showed me a last command Formatting Cache.... though it was stuck there for atleast 2 min so switched off the phone, went back in bootloader, it still showed S-ON?
I downloaded file from modaco as well, both files are same, modaco's and the one mentioned above... I checked MD5.
What am I doing wrong?
