Insane Battery Life

My battery test is being cut a little short, I need my phone charged for later tonight and I'm not 100% sure it will make it through the day. Here are my results so far though.
2d 5h 23m since unplugged, 12% battery remaining. Yes that is over 53 hours of moderate usage.
Incase you are wondering what im running here its not all that complicated, I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of you getting similar life.
Fresh 1.0.1 with ffolkes kernel and setcpu set to 245 max when screen is off combined with the newest radio does the trick. Anyone able to push this thing past 3 days with moderate usage have anymore tips? I think mine would have made it over 3 days if I didnt play about an hour a day of 3d games.
Also, thinking of switching to netarchy-toastmod kernel, anyone having similar life with that kernel? Wouldn't expect it to be anything different as its mostly the underclocking saving battery.

My daily usage
30 emails
250 sms
10 calls, 60 minutes (most 3 minutes or less)
1 hour 3d gaming
auto-brightness
15 minutes web browsing
1 hour showing off the phone/someone playing with it
only use gps or music when charging in a car, which i didn't for these three days.
also, live in chicago, really well mapped for coverage, i never roam. also, rarely use 4g i have a usb modem too so no need for tethering.

Define moderate use?
Surfing the web for 3 hours a day, checking email 10 times a day, Searching the market and playing games for an hour a day?

I don't know what you mean by moderate usage When I'm browsing the web for half an hour, I can literally watch the battery drain.... and when I check usage, it's always display (mostly) and voice calls. I see neither on yours. Did you even use the phone during those 2 days?

you can find it in any number of posts. first check your radio version, you might already be at the latest version (2.05.00.06.10 ---settings > about phone > software information > baseband version)

underclocking mine went from avg 28% to 7%, it should never be above idle or standbye though.

What do you do? Play nonstop games/videos? I get 6 hours of constant gameboid.
Anyway I unrooted for the OTA just once and I got 44 hours of light texting/browsing on wifi, 50% brightness.
I want to see baked snack / toasted users... they should be getting the best battery.

-I was actually using my phone... I had brightness off though because I was in a room where I could use the phone w/o brightness.. it wasnt constantly at 50% but it was at some point after heavy usage.

Pretty much nothing. Unplug phone, go to work, carry it in my pocket and check time occasionally. Browse internet for half hour at break. Carry it in my pocket and check time occasionally. Browse internet for half hour at second break. Carry it in my pocket and check time occasionally. 8.5 hours since unplugged, <15% battery remaining.
Problem is about 0 bars service at work. Constantly switching from Sprint to Roaming.

55 hours of battery. I get 34 hours of battery with constant texting, web surfing and downloading. I'm running cm6 2.2

I'm sorry, but it's just not possible to get those kind of runtimes if you really use the tool. Try using this thing the way it was intended, not just as some kind of a toy just to see what kind of life you can get out of a charge.
I'm on the phone, got bluetooth going, wifi, ... all day long. Average 75 incoming emails, maybe the same texts, several photos for documentation, about the same or more reply's to emails, couple of hours on the phone, .... lucky to make it to 5pm.
No way anyone can convince me that they can go even 24 hrs with my use. No way.

WiFi can actually save even more battery if you are in the same location long enough, but I have no need to keep bluetooth on at all times. Updating first post with more info on my usage, probably less than yours but still use a lot.
running the phone with these settings pretty much makes it impossible for it to die on a day's use, even for really heavy users. to kill it you're gonna have to run wifi tether, gps, or 4g for a while. i never use gps unless its plugged in, and i rarely use 4g.

im gonna try it with the netarchy and let u knw at the end of 2morow

Bad Battery life all of the sudden

Only thing I did different was turned on google talk and my battery went from 100% down to 24% in 4.5 hours. Could google talk really take up that much battery? Prior usage I would get over 18 hours, thats with texting, emails and a couple of voice calls. Previously under the battery use the screen was always at the top but now the Android system is at the top.
Guess my main question is could google talk hit the battery that hard?

Did you recently root? Mine seems much worse since rooting.

There you go. Gtalk must be accessing the internet often which is causing the drain in battery.

I have noticed if I leave a page open on Google Buzz, the GPS radio can drain the battery quick.
Another reason why I want to have a development ROM with all those nice troubleshooting tools to catch these problems quicker. Like before the battery is dead.

I have similarly awful battery life on the Vibrant, and I've been running GTalk 24/7 since I purchased the phone. Going to run it with no GTalk today to see it affects life. I'll post my results here later.

I'm rooted and I still have 23% battery after 29 hours unplugged. Any other apps you got running in the background killing your battery?

After I rooted I didn't add back the Facebook and other accounts that keep the contacts updated with their status and whatnot. I get a full 24 hours out of a charge now so I am really pleased with the battery life.

I am running mine rooted, gTalk on, google sync and one exchange push sync always on, "Twitter" twitter app updating @ 30min., LauncherPro, live wallpaper, gps on standby, and I have to say coming from G1, 3G Slide, HD2, this has the best battery life so far. Not playing any games on it, nor any media streaming aside from the occasional few minutes.
Now, it has only been two days running it that way, but one can hope it stays like this! Running it unplugged from 7am to 1:30am (next day) and still having 45% battery left after a day of medium heavy use is pure bliss!

im sorry but i am every good with phones and adjusting the battery drain and this seems terribly inaccurate unless you pick up your phone once an hour and use it. There is no way you have almost 50 percent better left on this device while running all of that stuff. and you have it on 3g? or edge? is the screen bright?
overall the battery has been TERRIBLE. and it takes forever to charge. that's why i sent it back. I hate USB charger cords... seems they take loner to charge.

Thats an awesome idea!!! Facebook sync is almost retarded to have on this phone since im not running TW or looking through my contacts to check on ppl... there is no reason why I should even have to keep the account synced. The service is still probably running in the background and dropping/retrying. Thanks!!!

AWESOME! Thank you OP for testing and bringing us back your findings. This is how it should be done!

I've had my Vibrant since roll-out day. The battery seemed to be working well and lasting a long time. Then it began to drain rapidly going from a full charge to under 25% in about 4.5 hours. This happens with or without use. I tried disabling sync, wi-fi, push, bt, etc and I didn't see any improvement to speak of. I also set it to use 2G networks only. That was all before rooting yesterday. Today it's no better at all so rooting doesn't seem to have had any effect.
As far as charging goes- it's horrible (mains, not computer); over 4 hours from completely dead (auto-shutdown) to 100%. Even if I begin charging at 35% it still takes over 3 hours to get to 100%.
What does all this mean? Beats me. I like the phone and I am hoping it's not a hardware issue. My rooted G1 with an extended life battery running Froyo lasted all day long with constant data use, go figure.
I'll be watching the forums over the next several days with the hope that something will break loose.

Nope, just a stock Vibrant battery. Phone lays next to me on my desk at the office all day, bounces between Edge and 3G here, currently, 2:16pm, the battery status in the phone settings shows a level of 76%, was unplugged this morning @ around 7:30. At my house I have full bars 3G. Battery use is 35% Voice Calls, 28% Display, 18% Cell standby, 13% Phone idle, 3% Android system and 2% Android OS.
I am not much into adjusting battery drain or anything like you, but those are the readings from the phone. How accurate they are or not, no idea, but this is definitely the best smartphone I ever owned concerning the battery life. And I owned a **** ton of them over the years. But I also don't complain too much, because getting through a full day is all I need.
Screen is set to auto-brightness with the application brightness thingy activated.

Edit: Reading my original post, I guess it could be a bit confusing - I did not mean it has lasted for two days like this - I meant I own the phone only for two days, and it was unplugged yesterday from 7am to 1:30am next day (18.5h)

It is a legit question. On my N1 and this phone I see HUGE differences in battery when the device is in heat/pocket and inside just sitting on a counter.

I have changed NOTHING - I'm all stock and have always done the DRM kill in services and toggle of airplane mode.
For the first time, today, my phone is 13 hours in and still at 50 % - I can't believe it.
I used it just as much as always, sending about 50 texts, reading and responding to emails.
I EVEN LEFT THE GPS ON ALL DAY by accident.
I don't get it, but I love it!
Finally the Epic is showing me what's up!!!

yea, sunday i went on a motorcycle ride and was jamming out to slacker the whole way (killed 4g since i knew i'd be outta 4g coverage on the ride) roughly 4hrs of straight slacker streaming and came home with 65% batt left and today on a normal usage day i am @ a flashing 0% batt after 10h 25m since unplugged.
wifi on during my work shift (8:30-5:30)in a low (2-3 bars) environment casual web/facebook on the pooper and smoke breaks moderate txting and about 16mins talking. FWIW i also keep mobile data and sync (facebook sync set to 3hrs) on and get quite a few emails throughout the day

Mine is working well too...just over 14 hours so far today and I'm still at 64%. This is with pretty light use, 3G on all day with sync, about 15 minutes of calling and about 15-20 texts. I'm pretty happy with my battery life, couldn't expect anything more!

This remind me of the early Samsung Moment days! So how did you treat your battery? Do you let it drain all the way down? Or do you charge it about half way like some people?

I'm pretty sure my battery has been WORSE since the update. Today my battery drained from 100-20% in less than 3 hours.
Not sure if its because I go through many deadzones throughout the day, or if its because I was using my phone a bit more than average, but was rather disappointing.
Good other users are getting better battery life though!

We're back to normal ****ty battery life again.
Unplugged at 6am it's now 9 and i'm at 80%. Haven't even USED IT ONCE!!! Did NOT reboot last night at all.
At this rate it's going to be dead by 6pm. Pretty sad considering like I said I've done nothing with this phone at all.

Weird, I got the update last night and charged it to full around 11pm. Unplugged it and left it off the charger. Now 11 + hours later I'm still at 81%. This is with airplane toggle and drm kill

I was at 89% when I went to sleep last night, woke up about ~7 hours later with 74%..sitting here 4 hours after waking up and i'm at 58%, time since unplugged at 10h 56m 38s

Well Now 2 hours later I'm still at the same exact battery level. Not sure what's going on here.....

Have to second that.
After update yesterday morning I charged it to 100% and 24 hours later still have 28% left (9,5 hrs of use left according to JuicePlotter).
I have full stock none-rooted. Screen brightness set to minimum (do not need it any brighter indoors), DRM and all useless to me services are shut down. I do not use JuiceDefender ( have it installed but disabled). I count myself as an average to heavy user.
Best time I got from the battery before last update was around 13 hours.

The stock battery meter in the task bar is not very accurate. I recommend Battery Indicator. There is a free version on the Market. I doesn't consume any power to run.
When I was running DG27, I usually got about 14 hours of moderate use per battery. With the DI07 update that dropped to about 6 hours per battery because of Sleep issues caused by bugs in DI07. Now with DI18, I'm getting about 16 to 18 hours of moderate use per battery.

I can't give a before and after since I just got my epic last night. However, I can say on my first day of use I have been using it on and off all day and I unplugged at 5AM, it has been a little under 9 hours. It is at 70% or so. This is 100% better than my old touch pro that wouldnt last a full day most the time.

Well Sadly I have to come back here and tell you about how f****g horrible my battery life has been the past two days.
I unplugged at 7am this morning, double checked that DRM is closed, did airplane mode, no gps, wifi ON (which is strong at my desk) - no other apps running.
After LIGHT use, (only checked a few emails) NOTHING ELSE. Here I am at 1 pm, SIX HOURS LATER and it wants to be plugged in.
This is absolute b****t.

my battery life has definitely been better since the upgrade. it was also convenient that just a day or two after i upgraded i had two extra batteries arrive. now battery life isn't even a concern.

Suggested setup for amazing battery life

hi guys/girls,
i wasn't able to find any sort of thread pertaining to what setup everyone is running for the best/worst battery longevity so i figured i'd at least post up how i have my phone setup in order to pull off a full workday/night and about lunch/dinner time til i have to absolutely recharge my phone (30-35hrs max). maybe if it helps someone get the most out of there battery between charges then great. so here we go...
how i use phone:5-10 incoming emails daily (hotmail/aol)
200ish texts/day (incoming/outgoing combined)
1-2 hrs or so internet browsing/zooming in out
1 hour talktime daily
listen to 3-4 hrs of music on sd card at work
signal strength 3-6 bars at all times
what i have running/not running:
gps off
wifi off
network on
1 min backlight on
full animation on
auto brightness on
vibrate/sound on for calls and notifications on
volumes for sounds set to 3/4 or so
no task killer installed
facebook/friend stream off
weather sync on
google sync on
news sync off
stocks sync off
foursquare on
i personally charge off a usb off of my computer when phone hits about 5% or so. so maybe that is charging it slower and not wearing out the battery cell? i've read that the slower the charge on a battery the better, correct me if i'm wrong. my phone has had no adverse effects and has not bogged down once. i hope maybe this will help in some way to narrow down what may be causing some users phones to die faster.
maybe have others post their setups to see a trend would that help?

I use to use juice defender app but I did some testing over a week and it doesn't help at all imo.

most battery monitors or battery saving apps actually have the opposite effect, especially the battery monitors. They're using power to monitor the battery condition, so they tend to do more harm than good.

Yea o was using a battery widget for a week or so and it seemed like it used more battery than it was worth. I try to run my phones as lean as possible and only use what I need when I need it.

Seriously?!
As far as I'm concerned thats borderline amazing. How in the h-e-double hockey sticks are you guys getting such great battery life? My phone doesnt hit that and all I really do is IM and browse the web maybe a combined total of 5 hours a day and thats pushing it.

01/27 update...another update if anyone is keeping track...pulled phone off charger at 8am now its 11:30p (16 hrs+/-)..45-50% battery left...also realized i left gps on with navigation running for 2 hrs from lunch earlier in the evening and prolly sent out 50 texts in last few hrs since last battery status update and looked at pics with a co-worker...so yea so far the setup above is bringing some good results for me.
01/28 update...its 2pm (30 hrs later), and phone just beeped at 15% battery left. finally ut it back on charger so i have a full battery for work. so there you have it folks. pretty nice battery life if you ask me...been texting and calling for the last 2-3 hrs today too which triggered the battery beep.

As far as I'm concerned thats borderline amazing. How in the h-e-double hockey sticks are you guys getting such great battery life? My phone doesnt hit that and all I really do is IM and browse the web maybe a combined total of 5 hours a day and thats pushing it.

try recalibrating the battery...basically let it die all the way to the point where it wont even turn on anymore...then I like to remove the battery for like 30 secs or so but im not sure if its actually necessary...then plug it back in and let it charge all the way til the led turns green...then take it off the charger and turn it on....did that and i noticed a big difference especially after a day or two

Over 24 hours on a single charge!! Awsome battery life!

I just wanted to share my battery life results of my NS with the community. I was able to get over 24 hours of battery life on a single charge. What amazes me more than that, is the fact that my battery was only at 72% when I took it off the charger. Much to my surprise the battery lasted me for the next 24 hours before it dropped to 16% and I decided I needed to charge it before going out this evening.
My configuration:
Rom: NS Collab 1.0.17
Kernel: Netarchy 1.3.0.2-CFS
Screen Brightness: Auto
GPS: On
Wifi Sleep Policy: Never Sleep
Email: Sync every hour
Facebook: Sync every 4 hours
Clock Speed: No special governors enabled
Most of the time I was connected to a WIFI network
Hope this may help those that have been having problems getting optimum battery life on their NS.

Yeah SI_NZ pics don't show any usage of the phone. Mine I talked for about 2.5 hours and was using facebook a decent amount. I also did web browsing, some videos for a little while, and I did a couple of video recordings of my son. Overall I used my phone a pretty decent amount during this time period, hence why I was so impressed. The same type of use on my EVO would have resulted in me having to put the phone on a charger before halfway through the day.

Darn... I'm stuck between the Nexus S and the HTC Desire HD, but the battery life on this phone must rock.
But how is battery life on a STOCK OS? I'm not much to root.

That seems to be a battery killer

I've found a few battery killers, maybe we should make a list and make it sticky. My phone easily lasts like 36 hours with normal use, which include a little gaming and lots of surfing, texting and calling. The apps i have found to drain the battery so far is:
Latitude activated in google maps. This is insane, latitude makes my phone go dead in like 8 hours !!!
a media player that i can't remember the name on :/

The Desire HD kinda sucks for battery life and I found it was too big/bulky feeling. It wasn't as fast as the Nexus S in everyday use either...the Nexus S is quite quick.
But how is battery life on a STOCK OS? I'm not much to root.

I'm on stock 2.3.3 out of the box and battery life is very good, better than I expected. I don't have too many specifics yet since I've only had it a few days. But so far it's impressed me again today with over 13h 30m 43s, with 44% display use, and 72% battery left. Perhaps I'll comment on the weekend after I calm down a bit and use it over a more typical day. But as it stands so far, I expect to get 1 day heavy usage, 2 days on daily typical usage, and 3-4 days when using the phone very little (like while camping/hiking).

Well 8 hours is quite good since it runs the GPS constantly and updates your location on the Latitude site. I ran other GPS apps on my Desire and typical times were ~4 hours before the first battery low warning. I haven't had a chance to really test the GPS properly, but initial use looks good.

2 days is pretty good. but you barely ever had the screen on. I can normally get 20 hours which lasts me the whole day, so I'm fine with charging every night.

I'm on stock 2.3.3 too. Typically I get about 35-40hrs.
WiFi: Off.
BT: Off.
GPS: Off.
Email/Calendar Sync: 1 hour.
Facebook: Off.
No fancy widgets though, just the stock clock and stock calendar. No task killers either.
If I game for about 2hrs during my daily commute, the battery lasts just long enough from 6am to about 11pm.

Forgot to mention how the phone is setup:
WiFi is off most of the time (I have 6gig data plan)
BT is off as I don't use an earpiece
GPS is always enabled (I'm a geocacher)
Gmail is set to manual sync (work is too busy for personal email)
Facebook/twitter/whatever are all disabled/not installed
News widget is set to update every 12 hours
I use a Live Wallpaper, Beautiful Widgets with animations, and I'ver never used a task killer as they're not needed.

Don't know where I have read that, or if it's just an impression. But I think that wifi connection consumes less battery juice than 3G connection. And push-Gmail doesn't increment battery usage.

I came from a blackberry (actually I still use the blackberry) and I was initially annoyed by the quick battery drain. But after seeing my friends with iPhones needing to bring chargers with them everywhere just to use whatsapp and gchat constantly, I was really glad I got the nexus s. I recently went on a road trip where I used the gps constantly to drive 4 hours out to the destination, used the phone there to whatsapp and call my friends, used the internet to look up restaurants, and then used the GPS to drive 2 hours back to our hotel and it lasted me the whole day. I'm stock everything with 2.3.3. I love this phone.

I managed to get over 48 hours on a single charge.
Thats with around 7-10 short phone calls per day.
Some whatsapp/sms
a few minutes of angry birds here and there
and some web browsing over wifi.
My WiFi is always on and set to never sleep.
sync is off.
GPS off
BT off.
My data is also usually off, since my work data plan is rather small.
Also i have simi clock running that updates the weather every 3 hours when WiFi is connected (which is most of the time).
I am on stock 2.3.3, unrooted.
after 3 days I had around 25% before I connected it to the charger.

The battery on nexus s is great, much more better than my old SE X10.

Could you please all tell whether you are on 9020 or 9023? I heard average battery results were not so positive with 9023 sclcd. Here I can only acquire 9023, and I have been reluctant to buy so far as people don't seem to reach quite the same autonomy as the samoled nexus owners.... Thanks!
