Dramatic Battery Improvement with latest update. - Epic 4G General

I have changed NOTHING - I'm all stock and have always done the DRM kill in services and toggle of airplane mode.
For the first time, today, my phone is 13 hours in and still at 50 % - I can't believe it.
I used it just as much as always, sending about 50 texts, reading and responding to emails.
I EVEN LEFT THE GPS ON ALL DAY by accident.
I don't get it, but I love it!
Finally the Epic is showing me what's up!!!

Great to hear!

yea, sunday i went on a motorcycle ride and was jamming out to slacker the whole way (killed 4g since i knew i'd be outta 4g coverage on the ride) roughly 4hrs of straight slacker streaming and came home with 65% batt left and today on a normal usage day i am @ a flashing 0% batt after 10h 25m since unplugged.
wifi on during my work shift (8:30-5:30)in a low (2-3 bars) environment casual web/facebook on the pooper and smoke breaks moderate txting and about 16mins talking. FWIW i also keep mobile data and sync (facebook sync set to 3hrs) on and get quite a few emails throughout the day

that's great man. So this is w/ the airplane toggle and DRM kill + update right? Or are you just running the update w/out doing those things and getting this battery life.

Mine is working well too...just over 14 hours so far today and I'm still at 64%. This is with pretty light use, 3G on all day with sync, about 15 minutes of calling and about 15-20 texts. I'm pretty happy with my battery life, couldn't expect anything more!

This remind me of the early Samsung Moment days! So how did you treat your battery? Do you let it drain all the way down? Or do you charge it about half way like some people?

I'm pretty sure my battery has been WORSE since the update. Today my battery drained from 100-20% in less than 3 hours.
Not sure if its because I go through many deadzones throughout the day, or if its because I was using my phone a bit more than average, but was rather disappointing.
Good other users are getting better battery life though!

Whoops cancel that.
We're back to normal ****ty battery life again.
Unplugged at 6am it's now 9 and i'm at 80%. Haven't even USED IT ONCE!!! Did NOT reboot last night at all.
At this rate it's going to be dead by 6pm. Pretty sad considering like I said I've done nothing with this phone at all.

I got about fourteen hours yesterday. around half left.

Weird, I got the update last night and charged it to full around 11pm. Unplugged it and left it off the charger. Now 11 + hours later I'm still at 81%. This is with airplane toggle and drm kill

Same here..
I was at 89% when I went to sleep last night, woke up about ~7 hours later with 74%..sitting here 4 hours after waking up and i'm at 58%, time since unplugged at 10h 56m 38s

Well Now 2 hours later I'm still at the same exact battery level. Not sure what's going on here.....

Have to second that.
After update yesterday morning I charged it to 100% and 24 hours later still have 28% left (9,5 hrs of use left according to JuicePlotter).
I have full stock none-rooted. Screen brightness set to minimum (do not need it any brighter indoors), DRM and all useless to me services are shut down. I do not use JuiceDefender ( have it installed but disabled). I count myself as an average to heavy user.
Best time I got from the battery before last update was around 13 hours.

The stock battery meter in the task bar is not very accurate. I recommend Battery Indicator. There is a free version on the Market. I doesn't consume any power to run.
When I was running DG27, I usually got about 14 hours of moderate use per battery. With the DI07 update that dropped to about 6 hours per battery because of Sleep issues caused by bugs in DI07. Now with DI18, I'm getting about 16 to 18 hours of moderate use per battery.

I can't give a before and after since I just got my epic last night. However, I can say on my first day of use I have been using it on and off all day and I unplugged at 5AM, it has been a little under 9 hours. It is at 70% or so. This is 100% better than my old touch pro that wouldnt last a full day most the time.

Well Sadly I have to come back here and tell you about how f****g horrible my battery life has been the past two days.
I unplugged at 7am this morning, double checked that DRM is closed, did airplane mode, no gps, wifi ON (which is strong at my desk) - no other apps running.
After LIGHT use, (only checked a few emails) NOTHING ELSE. Here I am at 1 pm, SIX HOURS LATER and it wants to be plugged in.
This is absolute b****t.

my battery life has definitely been better since the upgrade. it was also convenient that just a day or two after i upgraded i had two extra batteries arrive. now battery life isn't even a concern.

Battery life after initial charges- your opinions

As we all know, the Galaxy S uses a Li-Po battery.
Having previous expirience with those batteries (R/C Helicopters), i know that they require 5-10 cycles of full drain-full charge to reach full capacity and start their normal life cycle.
Not too long ago, there was a thread complaining about battery life here, but i think it was due to people checking usage time on the first or second charge only.
In this thread, i'd like to hear your opinions about battery life, but please-
Only those who passed 5 FULL drain-charge cycles, reply. We need some objective information about it.
Personally-
I'm after my 4th charge, and already seeing HUGE improvement. When i recieved it i barely managed to go through a single day, and now i'm almost 2 days since i last charged it, played some games, browsed a little, made a few calls, and i'm still over 65%.
Waiting to do 2-3 more charges and reach optimal state to see what it's worth.
Mine is a Li-Ion and lasts about a day with almost constant use.

You are correct in that initially we were told the battery type would have been a Li-Pol.
However, since the phone's release it has now come to light that the battery is in fact a Li-Ion.
I made a post that mentions this here if you wish to have a read.
I’ve had my phone approx 2 weeks, so I’m on my 5 or 6th battery recharge. My phone has been on for 1 day 20hrs now. I’ve talked on the phone for about two hours and surfed for about ¾ of an hour. Wifi has been on all the time – Bluetooth about 3hrs. Current battery level is 70% - I must say after all the gloom and doom re the latest smartphones I’m more than happy with the battery life so far and does seem to be getting better all the time.

In contrast I have had my phone since Thursday... I've charged it 4 times in 48 hours so far. I am using it a lot and am hoping I get thee performance rise soon.
Crabby
I'm pretty sure it will.
When i got my phone i charged it to full, and before the day ended i needed to chrage it again.
And now:
Last charge was thursday morning (GMT+2), and now, after 2 and a half days, i still have 40%.
I could probably go on for another full day.
My first few charges barely made it through the working day, but now the phone still has plenty of charge after 24hours. Although right now is an exception, as the lady is playing Abduction on it and will probably keep at it until the battery dies
She really should get her own Galaxy S. Although we're waiting on some GPS improvements before replacing her phone, she cant afford to get lost.

Correct.... She's far too busy keeping me in check, looking after our Granddaughter and the Farm.
I got my replacement SGS today (had to send the original one back as Carphone Warehouse messed up the order so had to send everything back just to get a new SIM) and been hammering it for 14 hours, literally 80% of that running games, using WiFi, bluetooth and GPS and I only got it down to 25% and hadn't even charged it to 100% before I couldn't wait any longer. If the battery does get better after the initial charge, I will have no problem with this phone.
Further to my earlier post...
Charged the phone to full before bed last night... All of the power widget functions of two exchange email accounts and hotmail updating every hour.
So with no other use for 8 hours the battery was at 91% when I woke up. Battery status confirmed that 57% had gone on standby and 29 % on idle
So... Presuming this bsttery use is constant when idle... My phone will be down to 70 % by 24 hours with no use?
Crabby
It varies greatly according to reception.
Good network coverage= less work for the transceiver inside the device=less power drain.
It's not really constant.

Wow battery from 100 to 10 in 3 hours

I know its the first day but damn 3 hours and done? I thought evo was bad :[
I don't know what you're doing, but it's wrong.
I bought my phone today at 10:00 AM. First thing I did was charge it all the way. Once I took it off I started getting my apps back, I watched a 720p movie for 10 minutes to see how it worked (freakin amazing... 720p MKV movies out of the box). Browsed the web for 10-20 minutes. Listened to music for 5-10 minutes. Played gamed for about 30 minutes.
Really put the phone through its paces.
I'm at 25% now. 9 hours since unlplugged and screen on time is 1 hour and 34 minutes.
Also remember that you don't get the most out of your battery until you cycle it a few times. I'm running juice defender which also helps a lot.
How did you watch your MKV movie? I am guessing that transferring a 5GB file to the memory card is not optimal.

It's a 720p MKV of Dr Horrible The file is only 800 MB (the movie itself is 45 minutes long). I transferred it over while charging the phone along with my music.
Use the "my files" app and navigate to the movie. When you click it, it opens in the stock movie player which plays MKVs just fine. I was rather amazed.

Lol I'm wrong ? I use juice plotter and heavy use and 3 hours later I'm almost at no battery
I'm ok with that as I have been using the hell of it! Love it so far
Yeah...kinda watching the battery myself.
Put it on the charger at 5x% and it hit 100% after charge in about 5 minutes. I turned it off to charge via USB because I knew that couldn't be right. Hit 100% in about 10 minutes. Turned it back on and it's at 65% and charging.
Gonna give this one a few days to condition, though, through normal use and see what happens. The GPS pisses me off that it's completely FUBAR but we'll see if a software fix takes care of that.
The epic drains its batter about 5 to 6x faster then my captivate. It went from 100% at 8 am to dead at 12. I turned off 4g and charged it but now its died again. Died 2 times in 1 day. I am returning it so I cant test more but some people say batters need few days before they work 100%.
I charged mine yesterday morning till the light turned blue and the phone said it was fully charged.
I worked on the phone from 2:00 yesterday afternoon till 11:00 last night...adding, emailing, texting, web browsing and when I was done, it was still at 50%.
My guess is that after there's a real 100% charge in it the battery will condition....just like every other cell phone I've ever used.
So far my Epic battery life is AMAZING. I get so much battery drain on my Evo when I'm not using it. Last night, my Epic was at 14% battery life. I refuse to charge it until I drain it all the way. This morning I woke up and it was at 13%. After 6 hours of idling... 1% drain.
That means my phone has lasted from 11am yesterday until 7:30am today. 2 hours and 10 minutes of screen on time....

You are really not having fun with this phone. I got my phone at 11am put it on the car charger. Made a few calls while on charger (about 40 minutes) at about 2pm the phone said 100% charged and to unplug. I'm coming from a modded WinMo FUZE to this phone' so you know I had to explore the Andriod OS. I was on this phone till about 11pm and still had about 20% battery after downloading apps(Now I finally know how poor winMo marketplace really is.) I know the battery will only get better so I'm fine with it. If I need more I'll get a extended use battery.
Ok well either battery life just blows or it needs time to adjust
I made double and triple sure to 100% charge it and juice plotter is already saying I have only 4 hours left from 100% and just now I've been using it for 45 min and its down to 75%
Another note is that the display seems to be the biggest and outrageous offender of battery consumption. 77% right now
My evo had that issue but once I rooted it and installed a custom rom it leveled out to not have the display use that much juice

Yeah I'm leaning towards battery life sucks because even when its off it is using up more battery than my evo did.
I can get full charge to last like 4.5 hours with moderate use.
And the display is by far the biggest offender
Right now it is ay 61% it battery use going to display
Juice defender saves your battery like whoa when it's not being used. Here are my current battery stats:
Current battery life: 36%
Time off charger: 9 Hours 30 Mminutes
Display: 57% (screen has been on for 2 Hours 26 Minutes)
Cell Standby: 25%
Phone Idle: 6%
Dungeon Hunter: 4%
Android System: 3%
Media Server 3%
What in the balls is media server?
I consider this phenomenal battery life compared to my EVO when it launched. It will only get better from here
READ THIS:
The way SAMOLED works is that each pixels is individually lit. Because white consists of the most light, viewing anything with a lot of white will kill the battery faster. Black, obviously, uses the LEAST amount of battery life. You can gain a bit of battery life just by using a darker background for your home screens.
Because of this, web browsing is a huge battery killer.
Yeah I've used that program but I'm trying to still be able to use things like gtalk juice defender kills data intermittently making im programs useless
My evo on jd got like 18 hours battery life and without like 7 which would be great for my epic
4 is a bit extreme especially when it goes from 23 to 12 in 1.75 hours with it being off

The APPS section of Juice Defender allows you to select apps that can use Data. When you open these apps, data is enabled immediately. You'll see the 3G logo kick in. It requires some tweaking to make perfect but id definitely worthwhile.
Just remember. White pixels on epic kills battery faster than Evo.

I'm having great battery life

Hey guys I got my EVO in the mail on Thursday, and do I love the thing! I have been reading about battery life and was a little concerned at first, but that was then. Last night I unplugged my phone at 7pm and it had a 95% charge. I played with it a bit and texted until around 12am. I did not charge it and started texting and using it for a while this morning around 10am. It is now 4pm and I have 49% battery. If this is what everyone is complaining about, im happy with it haha.
Basically, it's people leaving 4G / Wifi / Bluetooth / GPS all on at the same time that kills the battery life of the Evo. My launch-day Evo has routinely done 20+ hours of usage with no problems.
The only times I've ever seen a marked decrease in battery performance, I could find that some app was hung up in the background draining the juice.
Rooted or just stock non root?

Come back after you try using data for an extended time (texts don't need data connections most of the time), having your mail sync for even every 3 hours or so and facebook, news, weather or any other auto sync feature enabled. Watch your battery die as quick as a witch under water.
My email syncs every 10 minutes, and my weather syncs as soon as it can. (not sure how many minutes). My facebook updates pretty often. And I have news updating as well.
My phone is also NOT rooted.
I get fine battery life, with WiFi connected I get much better standby than when using mobile data. Turn mobile data off when I'm out and about and the battery basically doesn't move. But I still can get 20 hours of use if I'm not on my phone constantly. I only turn off mobile data if I think I need my phone to last more than a day. Like camping or something. I have gmail pushed and weather and all that good stuff synced every hour. Been playing with juice defender which does increase battery life pretty good but you can get the same effect by toggling your mobile data with the widget. Juice defender does turn on data every 15 mins for a minute to sync which is nice but it causes a little lag when you unlock your screen because it turns on data as soon as you unlock, a little annoying.

I highly doubt this is possible especially on the stock battey. I personally know there is no way to have all those apps syncing at those frequencies on the stock battery and still get MORE than 9 hours of use. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=783364
Unless you turned off your phone somewhere in that timeline and are not telling that bit of info. With the sync frequency you just gave, I seriously doubt your battery numbers are even the correct ones you're giving.

According to that, it says your phone has been powered on for 48 minutes and used for 15 minutes. Go back and check the link I gave in my first response and look at the screenshot most people would want to see.
EDIT: Saw your edit and your phone has been in standby most of the time. I personally am not impressed by standby times. But if that's what floats your boat then so be it. I personally have gotten 10 hours of CONSTANT use on the stock battery with apps syncing every hour and get 1.5 days normal use on my extended batteries.

my lastest its not stock but ill take it before i recharged i was 10 mins short of 20 hours

Yeah, I have gotten a whole 24 hours out of myn, but that was when it was new with little on it , and its first root and rom.

I know that people talk about losing the first 10% in like 10 minutes, but has anyone ever noticed how long it takes to lose the last 10% of the battery? That sht is frustrating, going from 90 to 70 for me takes only about an hour, but the last 10% for me can carry me another 3 hours or so. My battery is teasing me.

DK28 Battery Life ..is 13 h 28 m insane or normal?

With the newly leaked Dk28 there definitely seems some battery life improvement. I am on 13.5 hrs unplugged as of now and still about 20% battery life left.
I charged it before going to bed yesterday night... left if unplugged whole night.. moderate usage today morning.. emails, browsing, phone calls.
4G service on .. everything else off.
I dont think I saw something like this on Eclair... is 13.5 hrs normal or is it really really good??
What are you experiences? Please share.
I'm at 15 hours right now with 62% remaining, but that doesn't seem out of the ordinary for me. I went a little over 30 hours on one battery a couple days ago, which I think is pretty good considering it's a stock Froyo kernel.
I don't know what your settings are, but I can usually get about 40 hrs on one battery cycle. Most of that 40hrs is downtime, but I can manage about 3-4 hours of display time(games, surfing, etc) and about 30 minutes of talk time.
Your numbers look a lot like mine did before I started killing the DRM service.
Edit: Forgot to mention I am on 2.1 though.
That seems pretty normal. I unplug my phone when I leave for work and plug it in when I go to bed and it's usually at about 40% or so by that time.
For what it's worth, I'm not seeing any difference in my battery life since updating to 2.2. This is pretty much the same as I was getting on 2.1.
I will say that prior to DI18, I was getting about 50 hours on a charge. My last charge before DI18, I had gone almost 72 hours before plugging in to do the update. DI18 killed my battery life, and it's been about the same ever since.

I do have Autostarts killing DRM at boot. Not sure that it makes a difference on Froyo though.
I was on di18 from the day i bought my phone and i never got thru the day without plugging in at work.. i plug it in at night..pick it up100% charged while going to work and by about 2-3 with moderate usage it wud be around 25% left and definitely die if i dont charge at work on the way back home.. which is something i m not seeing now.
Are all you guys using this drmservice.. i wud like to kill it too .. not sure what it does tho.. will do a bit of reading..
I usually only have to swap batteries once a day. I leave wifi on nearly all the time. Bluetooth and gps are usually on for about an hour a day. I listen to music with the phone during work and when I go for a walk in the evenings. I play some games and browse the web here and there, too.
Last night, I swapped batteries before bed, and lost 11% in 9 hours, with wifi on. If I'm constantly doing things with my phone (gps navigation, games, etc) then I can kill it in 6 hours or so.
I'm getting round 18 hours with heavy wifi use and tons of browsing

This is right around what ACS members are seeing. I myself regularly go over a day with light to medium use.
That's normal. In the last seven hours, my battery is at 80% with live wallpaper and max brightness on.

Wow, I wish I could get that. I'm doing really good to make it 8 hours, and that's with limited use.

Pfffft, i get that easily on Eclair DI18, actually a little bit more. I'll call that normal, nothing exceptional.

Is this with the regular 1500mAh battery ?
For people getting 13 hrs+, or anyone really, what does your spare parts network usage look like? I'll update this post with mine.
I've been all over the place with battery drainage. (I've calibrated since new kernel). all details equal (same app setup, traveling to the same place, etc), sometimes I drain 15% per hr, sometimes 5%.

I read some of the comments and had to go back to top to see if I was in right thread!!
My 2.1 rooted used 2% an hour, I'm a moderate user, but most usage is data on 3g. I would have 50 plus left at bedtime.
Went to DK28 - idle used 6%, had to charge my late afternoon with any usage. Same setup, actually less programs.
So I rolled back, this was the same as pre Sept 30 upgrade and yes, I was toggling, killing, stopping, everything the same.
Just this morning, I took it off charge, spent about 10 minutes going through facebook and seesmic, check the charge percentage and I was at 93%.
What the HECK are you folks doing to get 18 hours of heavy browsing on WiFi?!
I really don't want a phone that has a tough time making it past lunch with it mostly sitting inactive. Heck, my ancient G1 did much better than this. Just checking now, I unplugged it at 6:30, and I'm at 89% already. Although I will say that from about 6:30 - 7:42 I've gone down 4%, so I suppose that's not too terrible. I'd love to have 2%/hr.
Addl data:
From 7:42 - 9:34 with it just sitting on my desk, it's down to 81%, so it's still losing 4%/hr without being touched.

Suggested setup for amazing battery life

hi guys/girls,
i wasn't able to find any sort of thread pertaining to what setup everyone is running for the best/worst battery longevity so i figured i'd at least post up how i have my phone setup in order to pull off a full workday/night and about lunch/dinner time til i have to absolutely recharge my phone (30-35hrs max). maybe if it helps someone get the most out of there battery between charges then great. so here we go...
how i use phone:5-10 incoming emails daily (hotmail/aol)
200ish texts/day (incoming/outgoing combined)
1-2 hrs or so internet browsing/zooming in out
1 hour talktime daily
listen to 3-4 hrs of music on sd card at work
signal strength 3-6 bars at all times
what i have running/not running:
gps off
wifi off
network on
1 min backlight on
full animation on
auto brightness on
vibrate/sound on for calls and notifications on
volumes for sounds set to 3/4 or so
no task killer installed
facebook/friend stream off
weather sync on
google sync on
news sync off
stocks sync off
foursquare on
i personally charge off a usb off of my computer when phone hits about 5% or so. so maybe that is charging it slower and not wearing out the battery cell? i've read that the slower the charge on a battery the better, correct me if i'm wrong. my phone has had no adverse effects and has not bogged down once. i hope maybe this will help in some way to narrow down what may be causing some users phones to die faster.
maybe have others post their setups to see a trend would that help?
I pretty much have gps, wifi/4g always on if I'm at school or home, and auto sync and I get 10-14 hrs. Yesterday I went from 8am to 1am and battery was around 55 percent but I didn't use my phone like I usually do. Regular usage usually nets me about 10% an hour.
Each day I probably send around 200 texts, read forums, google reader, and pulse in total of about 3 hours and play about an hour or two of games.
I use to use juice defender app but I did some testing over a week and it doesn't help at all imo.

most battery monitors or battery saving apps actually have the opposite effect, especially the battery monitors. They're using power to monitor the battery condition, so they tend to do more harm than good.
Yea o was using a battery widget for a week or so and it seemed like it used more battery than it was worth. I try to run my phones as lean as possible and only use what I need when I need it.

Oh and an update....after 12ish hours I still have 75% of my battery left. So battery is holding strong.

Seriously?!
As far as I'm concerned thats borderline amazing. How in the h-e-double hockey sticks are you guys getting such great battery life? My phone doesnt hit that and all I really do is IM and browse the web maybe a combined total of 5 hours a day and thats pushing it.
01/27 update...another update if anyone is keeping track...pulled phone off charger at 8am now its 11:30p (16 hrs+/-)..45-50% battery left...also realized i left gps on with navigation running for 2 hrs from lunch earlier in the evening and prolly sent out 50 texts in last few hrs since last battery status update and looked at pics with a co-worker...so yea so far the setup above is bringing some good results for me.
01/28 update...its 2pm (30 hrs later), and phone just beeped at 15% battery left. finally ut it back on charger so i have a full battery for work. so there you have it folks. pretty nice battery life if you ask me...been texting and calling for the last 2-3 hrs today too which triggered the battery beep.

try recalibrating the battery...basically let it die all the way to the point where it wont even turn on anymore...then I like to remove the battery for like 30 secs or so but im not sure if its actually necessary...then plug it back in and let it charge all the way til the led turns green...then take it off the charger and turn it on....did that and i noticed a big difference especially after a day or two
