There are a couple of things I like (and now miss) about the Sense UI...
I do like the dialer...
I do like the pinch/zoom features and the Sense browser better than on my Froyo mod.
What I never liked was the obvious and painful effect it produced on the phone's responsiveness and, therefore, its usability.
I love my phone now: CM6, overclocked to 710Mhertz.
Personally, when I see a fast, zippy, responsive Hero with the Sense UI, then I'll believe it!
The thing you have to remember (and I mean no offense by this), some people like fat girls, some people like skinny girls, some people like blondes, and some like redheads. Same with your phone, some people like Sense, and some people do not. I personally don't enjoy having to flash a sense based rom to update my PRL and such, just to flash back to an AOSP rom when done. As far as I'm concerned, I could care less if my phone had sense, but I haven't found a good way to update my PRL and profile under AOSP without it at least being on a sense rom. For me, I will probably always use a sense based rom just for that reason, but I am in no way using stock roms.
It takes 10 minutes tops to flash back and fourth for radio and prl updates.

Ill start by saying this is just a poll or rather an opinion getter. I prefer Stock froyo because it imo operates better and looks better.
When I first started I like stock better because it was way more customizable. Nowadays I'm using sense version by mdeejay because I felt he fixed the freeze issues completely. Stability was a big thing for me. Personally, sense looks much better but I hate that u can't customize it. once the freeze issue is fixed in stock versions I might go back.
I like both and usually run several builds at once, but I'm using this one because of its amazing battery life.

i always had stock froyo but am liking this sense. only thing i cant figure out is the send a contact directly to voicemail? where is it!?!?!?!??!?! anybody know?
Prefer Sense. Only wish I could have same look I do in Winmo; GTX, CHT, etc.
Stock froyo is cleaner. So I can customize, sence ui feels heavy

I used to only like vanilla froyo builds, but Sense has really grown on me, especially the new Sense from the Desire HD builds. Now I use Sense build with Launcher Pro and it's just about perfect.
Sense I'd say, although the main aim is to eliminate windows altogether, I rather likes the HTC sense GUI, and the sense build does bring it back to life in a way and right now I'm using a beautiful Android build, which i have to say, been using it for a while now and hassle free, no freezes, no lag, runs better then most android phones which is quite remarkable considering its running of the SD card.

just as a sidewinder... Sense, Stock, Ubuntu, MeeGo, or WP7? lol I personally havent played around with MeeGo or WP7 because they havent came out yet although they do look nice. I also think that WP7 will be an epic fail unless they can update their marketplace, that seems to be the attention grabber APPS!! ha
at any rate Linux is a definite winner in my book whether android ubuntu fedora or what ever. I just don't like MS poking its finger into everything
But i digress
I was always a fan of Stock, but since I've put on Hyperdroid Sense, I haven't looked back since. It's just so smooth, battery life is great and everything just works,... you can't argue with that.

Vanilla Is where its at...I personally don't like sense at all...I've used evo and desire hd builds but I always go back to stock froyo...currently my brother Is using my HD2, I have Nexus 2.2.1 running on it and feel like it can't get any better..

I like sense. It's just a matter of personaly perference. I like the HTC eye candy and stock Android is a little boring for my taste.
But if you ask me to choose between stock android vs. motoblur/whatever the samsung overlay is called/whatever the Sony-Ericsson overlay is called/whatever the Dell overlay is called - I'd choose the stock android every time.
Sense Apps + Stock Home
Okay so I have been thinking about this for awhile now and either I'm missing something or there is no substantial differences.
I was recently on Myns 2.2 RLS 5 and in my waiting time to RLS 6 I decided to try out the lastest nightly of CM7. Funny thing is, I was running ADW launcher which is also the stock launcher in CM7. I came to the conclusion that there really aren't too many differences between CM7 and Warm 2.2 or any sense ROM for that matter.
CM7/AOSP:
More customization
Warm2.2/Sense:
Full functionality of the phone with nothing not working
Sense launcher capabilities
A few other minor capabilities
I really, really cannot figure out the difference in the 2 at all aside from one being sense and the other being AOSP.
Potentially, I could use ADW launcher on both of them and they would look exactly the same and really the only differences would be that Sense would have full functionality of its features and CM7 would have more available customizations.
I MUST be missing something here. I have never really used an AOSP Rom as my daily driver so I can't say anything about the battery life or the speed and performance, but is this where the major differences in the two types of ROMS are?
Please no flaming here guys, I'm just looking at this in the simplest way possible.
Not only is there the Sense vs AOSP difference (which is big in my opinion, regardless of which you prefer), but you're also talking about two different versions of Android. CM7 is Gingerbread, and Warm 2.2 is Froyo. They're both Android, but other than that they're completely different.
Theres lots of little things some of which you don't notice if you are using adw, like senses widgets(paid launcher pro comes closest to replacing these).
Mainly the dialer, email, htc twitter app, music app, lockscreen, calculator, camera, calender, Bluetooth, Facebook integration etc. It's mostly apps with some os stuff like the Bluetooth on CM can use a wiimote.
I wish HTC would let us use thier apps on asop. HTC's dialer and email are what made it really hard for me to switch.
Before I get told about dialer one, I use it and its fine it's more the in call screen that pisses me off. I have to enter 16-24 strings of numbers about 15 times a day and having the number pad on the top is just plain stupid.
code. the code is way different on the entire thing, aosp versus sense. so if you are going to use adw anyways, i'd definetally go with cm7 to conserve battery and performance.
edit: wow didnt even realize i'm over 1000 posts. just kind of let that slip by. well, you get my 1002.
This is what I was aiming for. I like the functionality of adw launcher and was wondering where I would see the best results with it. Everything seems so much crisper in sense like the Facebook integration and dialer just like he said so it will be a hard change for me to make. Ilk try it out until rls 6 comes out. Then I'm going to have to try out calkulins and mikfroyo because Ive heard a lot of good things about them.

All I can say is try them all and see what you like best. I have tried almost every Rom for the Evo and I stick with CM. The reason being is I don't like HTC Sense and use ADW on it anyway, so why not use an AOSP Rom and that way it won't kill my battery to have ADW because HTC Sense still runs in the background even if you are using a home replacement app. Really I love the smoothness and quickness of AOSP and I love that team CM has coded a fully functional AOSP, built from the ground up, for just about every device out right now. Unbelievable! Anyway, back to my point. Try multiple Rom's and give them each a few days so that you get to use all the functions you normally use with them and decide which one you like best. This is what I did, but I was already a little biased toward CM because that's what I used on my MyTouch and loved then and still love it now. I don't hate on Sense because I feel that HTC did a nice job and made a very functional version of android which works well with their devices, but for me it is CM7 all the way.
PS. I still flash new versions of some of the Sense Rom's that I liked every once in a while to see if they will pull me away from CM, but I always go back.
#1 main feature on CM7 that beats the competition: Screen on/off animations! =)

I really like the new Sense 2 UI that comes with Nils Business Sense, but I also like the speed from Android 2.3 from CM7.
Hard to decide which to stay with.
I've only used one ROM, and that's CM7. While I like Sense, I really like CM7's lack of it.

I'm between CM7 stable and Skyraider 3.5
Once Skyraider 4 drops I'll make a decision on which to stick with. I just flashed CM7 again earlier today, but I'll probably flash back tomorrow.
I'm a big CM7 fan. I view Android 2.3.3 more important than sense.
Warm z twopointtwo all the way. The appearance of 2.3 with sense 2.0 and a very well done UI. Give the newest nightly a shot....it may not be your cup if tea but I bet if you tried it you'd love it

Its a tough call. I happen to like the sense interface and widgets but there are parts of gingerbread and cm7 settings that are really awesome as well. Rocking cm right now but I too will likely flash skyraider 4.0 and I am quite a fan of warm z as well.

CM7 fan here...
I used to be a huge fan of skyraider. Was my goto ROM for several months. I then tried MIUI (great ROM... just not a fan of the UI), and a few others. I settled with warm 2.2. I used that ROM for quite some time and really liked it as well.
I eventually made my way to CM7 and have been using it for roughly two months now. Very stable and getting great battery life (you can see my config below). I've learned to significantly customize the UI and notification bar and have been very happy thus far.
I may try SR 4.0 or Myn's Z ROM... we'll see. The only thing constant with my phone is change
Happy Flashing
+1 for warm z 2point2. I had used skyraider 3.5 for a long time and am loving 2point2. I tried cm7 and it just wasn't for me...havent tried nils yet.
Nils new update is working fantastic for me!

It depends what you value most. For me, battery life was a very major part in my decision- probably the most important.
CM7 with chad's kernel and a bit of underclock has some crazy good battery life, you probably already know that though.
To be honest I don't know why this is a post because it just comes down to preference
Nils is a great developer and very active on fixing any bugs or problems with his ROM's. If you shout him a change or something you'd like to see there's a real possibility you may see it in the next release.
I started out with Virtuous, switched onto Skyraider Athena, and now CM7.
I really enjoyed the sense aspect of everything, specifically the dialer and fb connectivity... other than that I didn't care much.
Then I switched to Athena, it was the best of both worlds, dash of sense, pinch of vanilla. basically was vanilla with the exception of dialer and the aforementioned.
Now on CM7 I decided to jump ship and go full vanilla, and it's awesome. The sheer amount of customization within the ROM (including all the themes) is just awesome, and I don't think I'd switch to anything else.
I had CM7 on mine for like 2 days and it ran great and then started to get really slow and stupid on me so I flashed back to Incredibly Re-Engineered 2.4. Over the past month I've grown to love sense (had an og droid for a year), but absolutely hate the dock thing for it. I wish I could have all the sense features but use a dock like ADW's.
My biggest gripe with the aosp roms was having to use a different lockscreen. I got so used to not even looking at my phone to unlock it, but cm7 has me covered there as you can choose from several lockscreens in the settings. The only other thing I really missed was the messaging widget but I was able to add a shortcut to the messaging app to my lockscreen slider so it's even easier to check my texts. I was only ever truly happy with Lou's redemptive revolution before cm7 came around.

Sorry if this question has been asked a million times haha. But I'm just curious about the perks or other ROMs, most especially for battery life since I'm out and about most the time. I have tried CM7 and Miui when they were still new to the shift but just settled down with Mikshift because I love the simple sense roms haha. But ever since I rooted my friends HTC Glacier a couple days ago my mind just became a curious george lol. I know I can just read the threads but I want to know why the person uses that rom....thanks in advance!

I also enjoyed playing on a MIUI rom due to the high customization you can do with it.

No doubt if u want raw performance without care for ui. Use cyanogen. I had cyanogen for a bit, and could notice the speed.
But I lovee sense, so I'm usin mik g supreme currently I think it runs just as well as regular mikg but u get 3d widgets/rosie...
If we ever get the src for the kernel from htc mikroms would improve performance greatly. Id say I'm more than satisfied with the stock kernel with sense 3.0

Honestly for me it's a toss up between CyanogenMod and MikShifted-G. Cm has the raw performance while MS-G has the stability & reliability. Currently I'm using MS-G. It was a little quirky at first, but when I got the V6Supercharger and 98KickAssKernelTweaks scripts installed the UI became just as snappy if not more then cm. Just wish HTC would release the damn kernel source already.

True, but not always a good thing. I downgraded and rooted my shift yesterday, and I'm running into the same problem that I had when I first switched to linux on my desktop back in 2000. There are so many choices that I can be tough to narrow it down to what you really want.
Overall, I thought Sense was a bit overdone, so I've been enjoying CM7-nightly for the moment, but there are a small handfull of features I REALLY miss from Sense like T9 in the dialer, and the FriendStream widget & app.
This is really a subjective question. You will get different responses from different people.
Personally I have tried all roms available for the Shift and I always seem to go back to MIUI. In terms of customization, MIUI has virtually limitless UI options. It allows you to really make your phone unique. At first I really did not like the fact that it resembles crApple UI. But after I gave it a try I was hooked. I've haven't been on any other rom for more than a week after trying MIUI. With the Tiamat kernel my battery has lasted more than 2days with medium use.
I also liked Mik G. Its a very good rom. But I just got tired of sense lol. I do think that Sense is the best Manufacturer pushed UI though.
Like someone before me said if you want raw performance CM7 is great. The UI is just not as "pretty" as some others.
I had good performance with ShiftDeck as well. Basically similar to CM7 with a few tweaks and changes.
I suggest trying all the different roms and see which one you enjoy, thats what really matters.
Happy Flashing!

i keep sense and AOSP booted. I like the functionality and lightness of AOSP, but there are couple little things on sense that I like as well. Cameras, calendar, and weather primarily, but when I don't feel like charging my battery every 6 hours, I switch back to salvagemod or MIUI.

I hope by "functional" you mean out of the box. There is almost nothing you can do with Sense that you can't do with AOSP. It may require some tweaking to get it the way you want, but you can do anything you want with AOSP and, as a general rule, it is much faster than Sense.
I believe in the last couple week I have been through and checked out over a dozen ROMs. I love the speed of aosp roms but I keep coming back to sense because there are some functions and widgets I do like that I just cannot get. I normally get 24 hours on average for a single charge on any sense rom after playing with kernels and battery tweaks. Both are great. Just depends on my mood and how often I want change.

I agree..and I'll admit that sense has it's pros but it's so bland. Even the themes r stale. Not to knock on the hard work that the devs put in on all things sense, but customization goes right out the window... I've gone through all and will always stick with aosp.
