I was a huge fan of swype. It was super fast, super accurate, and I thought it was a nice, elegant solution to a relatively inelegant problem (virtual keyboards, more often than not, suck).
All of this was true BEFORE the JI6 update.
Now I find that swype's accuracy is MUCH lower than it used to be. It lags occasionally, so it doesn't grab every letter I swipe past. It doesn't "learn" words nearly as fast as it used to.
I told my wife, and she said, "Oh, thank god, I thought it was just me." So I'm thinking we can't be the only two people this is happening to. Anyone have any clue what happened to swype?
same problem with me
I agree. I love swype. But I hate that it learns EVERY typo that I type. Something I did that seems to help was clear my swype user dictionary (the words I have taught it)
Menu > settings > applications > manage applications > menu, filter, all > swype > clear data.
It does delete all of the words you have taught the keyboard... But then you can re-add the words you use every day (swear words. Ducking swype)

Did you do the JI6 OTA or download ODIN via one of the threads here? I noticed this same problem it was killing me I was so good at Swype before then it turned to crap. I used ODIN JI6 FWIW, and have since gone into Swype settings and moved the slider more towards "accuracy" from "speed" (about in the middle now) and it seems to have helped...a little...gonna give it some more time...
Definitely noticing this on JI6.
man i thought i was the only one...ever since i got the update same thing swype has been lagging and the words are def not coming out as accurate or fast. im gonna try and clear the dictionary and see if it helps...other then that the j16 update seemed to be a good thing...
In my opinion, it's a little off. I wish the stock android keyboard had swype so i can go back and forth from swype to typing without changing the keyboard (yeah i know you can type with swype but its doesn't feel as great)
I'm having the same issue with Swype. Before the JI6, swype was just amazing and far better than any phone keyboard I have ever used including the iPhone. Hope they fix it in the next update.
I have also experienced the "lag" while using swype after J16
Tho I'll get use to it i guess, still wish it was like it was before the update....
Well, at least I know I'm not the only one!
I'll try clearing the dictionary, see if that does anything. (You've found a HIDDEN WORD! Great, I always wanted to go on a scavenger hunt)
Thanks, guys... I'll poke around some more and see if I can find anything about this.
Oh, and @jalsing: I didn't upgrade via ODIN, I used the KIES Mini upgrade that Samsung released after people complained so much about how slowly the OTA was being pushed from T-Mobile.
I manually adjusted the settings to better accuracy over speed, which seemed to help, but yeah... lots of crazy words show up every now and then

well i ended up doing a factory reset...jst reinstalled my apps but all my data from sd card were still there...works perfectly now super snappy j16 update is still intact and swype is back to working excellent!!

I have seen a few people saying that darchs roms have virtually no keyboard lag compared to the sprint builds. Has anyone come up with a good solution or app alternative in the sprint 2.1 roms to reduce keyboard lag. I love the new roms but the lag is slowly eating away at me. I must have gotten spoiled.
Yes, I agree. Perhaps it has something to do with the voice input? The keyboard was soooo smooth on DC1.

can anyone confirm that the older keyboard is faster? I'll flash that ****er in a heartbeat if it is. I might try swipe too, I see that swipe light link up, looking pretty tempting.
The new XDA-modified keyboard definitely has more lag than the stock HTC keyboard.

Actually no. Both keyboards gave me ridiculous lag in the new 2.1's. However, ever since I applied a new Rosie theme through MetaMorph, believe it or not, I have little to no keyboard lag now.
Well I did notice that the new keyboard lagged very bad, so i ended up going back to the stock keyboard. It still has some lag, but it is noticeably faster than the new one.
Turn off any kind of feedback (vibration and sound) if you have not done so already.
with all types of feedback off, I still lag on the new keyboard. I did slightly on the old one, but this is noticeable.
I agree, the new, updated keyboard is significantly laggier. And smiley's and the voice to text button (which isn't even very accurate). I would obviously be ideal is someone could come up with a solution to make the new one less laggy.
In the mean time, does anyone have a good tutorial for switching back to the old keyboard?
Give me a minute or so and I'll have a batch script that'll get the new one back for you... You DO have the old keyboard, right? Or do you need that too?
Batch script to reinstall old keyboard
Hey. Here is the batch script as promised. Make sure you put the script, as well as the old HTC_IME.apk in the SAME DIRECTORY that ADB is located. If you need the old HTC_IME.apk, you can google for it or find a ROM, extract it, then go to /system/app and copy it out.
Hmm, now that it was mentioned, 1.0 did have almost no lag with the keyboard. I am back running 1.5 right now. Waiting for OEM 2.1.
i agree. this keyboard lag is pissing me off. i can't take it.
if there a way to allocate some resources to the keyboard. i don't use the vibration but i do use the sound. it makes me know that i pressed something and makes my feel more secure when i am pressing another button so the sound is a must for me.
Flipz put a zip on the first page of his fresh Rom. I flashed it a little while ago. It's a little bit faster, not a ton though. I'm sure someone will have it running quick soon enough.
can you explain this keyboard a bit more???
i would like to try it out if possible. i like the smileys but i only used it twice and i like the voice command but i only used to to show it off.
I use shapewriter, and it's just as quick as it was on any other rom, even stock. and I can type (well, shape) much faster
Hi guys
Yes.. there is a bad lag...
I found a small fix
there is a "pop up" setting in keyboard setting
it is set to 750...change it to a lower setting. I have mine on 300.
Also change the vibrate length to 15 and enable it..
This helped my lag... but itis not gone!

i can confirm. this def took away alot of the lag thank you
I have the Sprint Hero, and used the stock rom for 5 months,
DC 2.05
DC 2.07
and currently fresh rom 2.0, The keyboard lag is rediculous on this thing, and one of the worst keyboards I have ever used. The lag makes it unusable..
I have installed the 2.1 HTC IME keyboard, the 1.5 stock HTC KB, and the same one on the droid eris. Nothing helps.
The droid eris' keyboard works perfectly for some reason and for the hero, it sucks. It seems everyone will comment saying
"Mine doesn't lag"
If someone cannot come up with a possible fix, can someone please explain why their is lag on the HTC KB.
you might consider using xdas
lotsa options :-D
not sure if its more lightweight and less lag, and i hate to say it but...mine doesnt lag and i have no explanation
try regawmods rom. he has a black keyboard, its pimp. i found that while i dont experience LAG per-say, when compared to his, his was much more RESPONSIVE.
I'll join in. Mine has lag and I couldn't figure it out. I just installed Fresh 2.0d today to see if it's different. So far... no.
I agree with you, mine did lag. I'm using Sushi rom and the black htc keyboard is very responsive. Also, the AOSP keyboard never lagged one bit. I love it.
I'm running Fresh 2.0d. I'm also using Better Keyboard from the market...and I have no lag. The only time I will notice lag is if the phone is recieving a call while I'm texting, or if an app is installing after download. Aside from that...I'm not noticing a lag.
I also keep my phone as clean as possible. I clear text messages once a week, often clear my call log, ect.
Its mostly the messaging app i've discovered. Try pushing this to your phone. It will give you the stock android 2.1 messaging app which I love, and it is much faster
I started using the beta from swift key and it works nice.
i have to agree. the keyboard lag pisses me off. i can't take it. turning off vibration helps which i dont mind and turning off sound helps but i do mind that. i would really like sound on this.
The 2.1 IME keyboards and the XDA keyboard both lagged for me. Luckily I only have to deal with it long enough to install Estrong's file explorer so I can slap Swype back on. I don't have any lag in Swype.
You could try the non-haptic keyboard here >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=660506
For me it's not just text messages. It's everywhere on the phone. I will be in the web browser and typing in an address and i will take the e and it sits for a sec then a 3 shows up. Or, I will type and it will pop in the letter, but I can't hit another letter for another second or 2. 1.5 wasn't like this, but I can deal.
Does the better keyboard from the market have the voice to text option? I've been using that a lot lately.

I have the HTC Mms .apk that came with Fresh 2.0, but I am a noob, when it comes to the adb stuff, could you please or someone explain how to install the stock 2.1 Mms.apk , I will give it a shot and hope it works.
I hate to say this, but the one thing the iPhone has over this is the KB. I am not an apple fanboy, I prefer android. But the KB lag makes the phones only input method virtually unusable.
1.5 was like this also. everything i tried has a keyboard lag. better keyboard is ok but it lags also.
every keyboard lags for some reason.

the stock keyboard lags also. don't even bother but it is close to better keyboard in performance. i wish there was a way to boost protity on the keyboard apps.
is there an app for that???
exactly, and its not just texting, every text field its ridiculous.
i just tried disabling everything in better keyboard and it isn't helping.
i tried looking for an apps that would increase the cpu priority on apps (keyboard) but i couldn't find any...

I dont think increasing the priority will help, but download Auto Memory Manager from the market.. Go to running processes, long hold it, and increase the priority or just say never kill, gives it the highest.

i'm downloading and trying it now.
I turned off Vibrate when typing and I don't lag one bit, prior to doing that I lagged a ton.

Yes........
I have also experienced EXTREME lag in most of the 2.1 roms out right now. Esp. DC and Fresh. Turned off vibrations, turned off sound, installed every keyboard I could find including AOSP and it didn't help. The lag was all over the place too just like others reported - not just in text messages or email.
Then I found a fix...
A rom without Sense. So far it's the only thing that has worked for me (other than reverting back to a 1.5 rom - yuck). Ic3 and MatrixROM both have 0 lag and run beautifully for me. Haven't tried the newer Sense-less roms yet.
Hope this helps!
Is it just me or are you guys also realizing that swype is absolutely horrible on the htc aria. The aria has too small of a screen to be able to use swype well. Whenever I drag my finger to the next letter i cant see if im on that letter because my finger is over it and the screen is so small.
Just wondering what you guys thought about swype on the aria
Love it on the Aria. I am used to the small screen though, from my htc magic.
Sent from my HTC Aria using XDA App
its not bad... i had it on my htc pure and the screen was also small, but i had a stylus on that which made things a lot easier.
I see what you're talking about. Fortunately I know where the keys are without seeing them so this isn't really a problem for me.
Love Swype on Aria, the point of using Swype is you don't need to look at the keyboard to type fast, which means you do need to know the position of the keys. I don't think it will make much different with a bigger screen since my thumb will still cover the keys I'm trying to type.
My only complaint about Swype is that you give up the voice-type feature when you use it. They really ought to reincorporate that feature, since it's nice to be able to take notes when I'm mumble, mumble, COUGH driving COUGH.
There. Now I've gone and done it. I've made Oprah hate me.
Regards,
Corporate Dog
EDIT: Oh. I forgot. I actually have TWO complaints.
I HATE how the recommended words pop-up is implemented. If I'm typing 'Bioware', and Swype recommends 'beware', I'd prefer it if my closing of the pop-up meant, "No. I don't care for any of your suggestions. Keep what I typed, as I typed it." rather than, "Accept the top recommendation."
I know there's a user dictionary in my phone, and I've certainly added to it, but I'm constantly using non-standard words.
They put the microphone back in the latest beta, which they closed like 3 days after they opened it.

Same here.
It does get annoying from time to time, but I find it much easier than the standard keyboard. Especially when typing ridiculously long words which swype seems to pick up without a hitch.
Yea, I find the lack of a microphone shortcut annoying, too. Since I use Swype with my index finger, I don't really have a problem with the screen being too small. Swype is supposed to be able to correct for errors, anyways, but I have seen the correction fail at times. Swype is still more accurate than voice, anyways, and you can always resort to typing it out if Swype doesn't recognize it, which I think makes it better than voice. It would be amazing if voice worked perfectly, though, I'd never have to type again.
I really feel like evoking a tune from Dora the Explorer here, but I'll save yall from experiencing the odd effects babysitting my nephew!
Anyway, I got in on the recently re-opened Swype beta as recently as yesterday, as I remember, and today i'm not able to swype to type anymore. I'm typing this post from the Swype keyboard by traditional "pecking." There is also no word prediction happening, despite it being checked in the swype menu.
Am I overlookimg something. Has anybody else had this happen? Thanks!

I had this a week a go.
It started happening and then i don't know how or why it popped up saying that swype wasn't licenced for my device.
So i just uninstalled the keyboard and went to the skype installer and reinstalled it.
job done
It happend to me to I just reinstalled it and its working again

Yeah, I thought I remembered this happening to me last time I had the keyboard. But instead of being smart like yall, I just deleted it. Oddly enough, this time out started working again.

Swype version 2.4.44 won't swype, but it will accept keystrokes.
Old versions of swype 1.6 or so seem to work fine.
Anyone been able to get a new version of Swype to work for them? Especially on an HD2?
I've been using my S5 for a couple weeks, rooted on 4.4.4 NI2. Mostly I'm using the Samsung keyboard since I actually like the layout. Autocorrect has increasingly developed very strange tics which are extremely frustrating, especially since it doesn't let you backspace and correct the word (if you try that it'it'll just "correct" it over and over again, the only solution being to type another word after and then insert a space between them). For instance, one "word" which has spontaneously appeared in my predictive text is it'll'll. It seems to have particular trouble with words using an apostrophe.
Is there any way to root out this obnoxious behavior? When I refurbished my S3 and wound up on 4.4.2 I ended up disabling autocorrect because of similar issues.

You could try going to settings, application, Samsung keyboard and clearing data (maybe cache too if that doesn't work). I also saw where some people said they went to language and input, Samsung keyboard settings, unselected predictive text. Turned off their phone. Then went back and reselected it and it worked better. I like the google keyboard so I don't have these problems.

Well I tried the second option and we'll see how it goes. If that doesn't work I'll try the first option. I'm worried it'll unlearn some of the words I taught it, like "them", "form", and "easy". I heard it had a problem with 4 letter words but I didn't expect those to be among them!
Samsung Keyboard is unusable!
I tried clearing the data, the cache, resetting the predictive text. . . none of it worked. Samsung keyboard seems to have a tic when I use the apostrophe which causes it to insert text that repeats what I just typed. This is coupled with an insistence on "learning" every misspelling I make as the correct way to spell a word and then refusing to change it.
I deleted some stuff when I rooted my S5, more than was recommended in the thread. Maybe that's the problem? Because there's no way Samsung Keyboard could have a big this bad.
Maybe it's time to upgrade from the stock ROM to Eclipse, though I suppose it might not be any better because it's a keyboard problem. Trying different keyboards now.
