[Q] Wildfire with v2 or v3 Hermes? - Wildfire General

Okey I have a question if someone could answer. I'm pretty noobish at this stuff so I would appreciate if someone can help me out.
I have HTC Wildfire with PS freedom and Open Manager 1.13 and everything works fine exept controller problem in some games like Rock Band 2 and F1. it allways shows guitar as Microphone and it does that only in rock band 2, RB 1 works fine.
I've heared Hermes V3 or V4 fix it, so is there any way I can fix this? I have PS freedom with recovery custom rom and it gives me this options in recovery mode:
- Allow Backup
- Allow Backup + Peek & Poke syscalls
- Homebrew Only
- Homebrew Only + Peek & Poke syscalls
- Possibility to load other payloads from SDCARD
So if anyone can tell me step by step what I should do to fix it?

you can have a look at this http://208.100.42.21/showthread.php?t=793185&page=3
i think it needs to change the payload to hermes v3

Okey thanks blurapple for the tip but I found it by myself.
Even tho this payload I found was in forum for XPERIA it's working on HTC Wildfire. So now my controller works perfect. If anyone have similar problem here is what I did:
I cant post links here, so you will have to search for PS Freedom Xperia Walkthrough on this forum. There you will find a guy who attached hermes V3 payload and all instruction you need.
I didn't acctually need to type any commands to my terminal, as I'm running PS freedom custom rom which gives me possibility to load other payloads from SD card while my phone is in recovery mode which is way easyer then typing in terminal everytime. So all I needed to do is copy payload_hermesV3.bin to /proc/psfreedom/payload folder on my SD card, and from recovery I went to load custom rom and pointed to above folder.
If you want you can search for PS freedom wiki wildfire, and there you will find recovery rom, which will make you to have ps freedom in recovery mode so you dont need to boot your phone or type commands in terminal everytime you wanna run psfreedom.

PL3 is better than Hermes V3, check kakaroto's blog: http://kakaroto.homelinux.net/2010/10/ps3-why-i-dont-like-the-hermes-payload/
alephzain did a great job by adding PL3 to Wildfire_PSfreedom port, plus other nice features.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8690038&postcount=83

Yeah I was reading about PL3, but how do I acctually make it to work? I mean I would like to know where do I put things from PL3.. on my phone, usb HDD or somewhere else, as there's no .bin files in PL3.
Cause while my phone is in recovery mode custom loader only recognize .bin file. I would appriciate helping me where do I put all those things which are in PL3, cause there are lot of folders and other things..

and yeah alphezain did do great job for doing recovery image which I'm using and it only allows you to use psfreedom from recovery mode on your phone so no need to use terminal or have your phone full booted, but that's not with PL3 payload as I didn't have my controllers working proprelly until I didn't load custom hermes V3 payload as I described in post above.

Hermes v3
Please guys info how to load Hermes v3 payload i still get payload fail in psfreedom in recovery menu.

lets wait for alephzain reply, i got black screen when try to use backup manager or other pkg tools
OK, get it work, the issue was from my PS3, there were 3 stucked DVD's in my PS3 (It was my kid who did it ^_^, I will give him super nitendo to play with and destroy)

I explaind to you how you can make it to work.
1st you need to get new Unrevoked for wildfire, then you need to download custom recovery rom with psfreedom support from web page PSFreedom Wildfire wiki. Launch unrEVOked recovery tool and select the recovery custom rom to flash (File -> Custom recovery) When done, just boot into recovery every time you need to jailbreak your PS3.
2nd look for this post on this forum http://208.100.42.21/showthread.php?t=778986&page=8
you will find hermes v3 it's made for Xperia but it's working fine on my wildfire.
copy payload_hermesV3.bin to /proc/psfreedom/payload folder on your SD card, and while your phone is in recovery mode go to psfreedom then to load custom rom and point to the folder proc/psfreedom/payload.

hermes v3
Yes and i followed step by step everything it's ok until i go in the menu Launch PSF i select load from sdcard i select the payload hermes v3 and then i have error loading payload.

Okey I know what's wrong. There was an update at wildfire wiki for recovery rom, and in this update you have wilfire with kakaroto's PL3 payload, not hermes. And people claim it's even better then hermes.
So what you need to do is go in the menu Launch PSF and then you go to launch PSF and do jailbreak on PS3. You will even have leds on your cell change colour as the original PS Jailbreak do.
Even tho I had some problems with default version of payload, when I went to backup manager and loaded any games, when I put the disc inside it showed me original game. I was able to fix it by goin to PSF, load from SDCARD then point to PSFREEDOM/Payload_dev_3_41.bin
And if you did everything right you should have psfreedom folder created when you installed psf-buzz-101710_222457.zip file. If not you need to go to install zip from SDcard and then you should have folder and lots of payloads inside.
If you still want to use Hermes v3, you will have to look for a previous version of custom recovery rom which is also at HTC wildfire wiki, just need to look for previous version.

Thanks
Manny thanks for your info it really helped i will try to see if Heavy rain and F1 work with default payload if not i will try the other recovery image and hermes payload.

Oh yeah and one more thing... Open backup manager seems like it doesnt want to work with kakaroto, so I'm using gaia manager which works fine with PL3. Eyepet move didn't work to me before and now it's working.

I've been testing PL3 a lot with alphzain custom recovery rom, and I had lot of problems with it, so I've decided to use the previous custom recovery rom where you can load payload and loaded hermes v4. I dont have any problems with it on my HTC Wildfire, and I just tested F1 2010 with it and it's working smooth. Savegame and controllers are working, while with PL3 I had savegame problems + I couldn't use Open Manager.

Would you be able to provide links to all the files you've used and just like how to use them. I've managed to use the original PS Freedom for wildfire and install open manager etc. but I haven't been able to flash the custom recovery.
Just links to what you've used, and what to do with them would be amazing
Thanks.

Okey well I can't provide links here, but you should read previous posts I been writing before, it's explained where you need to go.
What I used is psfreedom custom rom which you can find on psfreedom wildfire wiki, but it will automaticlly take you to the newest version with PL3. So if you don't wanna use it with PL3, on the same page below you will find the link for the old version which just have PSfreedom but from your phone recovery, and ability to load custom payloads. Hint: google for hermesV4.bin type exaclly as I did. Put it on your SDCARD anywhere you want it, and when you are in recovery mode go to load custom payload and point to directory you put it
To install custom recovery rom you need to use unrevoked as I explained in previous posts.
Hope this helps you!

UK Vodafone HTC Magic Root help!!!!!!!!

Hello,
I have been trying to root my friends HTC Magic following instructions I have found on this and other forums and having no luck.
The phone in question is a vodafone htc magic.
My problem is that the computer does'nt recognise the phone as the drivers don't seem to work for it!
Could somebody please post a step by step guide for Noobs so I can see where I am going wrong!
I rooted my Hero no problems, but the Magic is proving a bit more of a challange!!!!!!
Many thanks,
Iain
You could do what I did which I've summarised below. There's probably more backup steps than is necessary, but you can never be too careful.
There's loads of guides out there with the guides and detail, e.g. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=519523
but they seem to branch in and out of methods quite a bit. I've added a few links to the pages I used for the detail.
The method I used is the 1 click backdoor, which also disables OTA updates to stop it being closed in the future I think.
First off, I'm a Linux noob and managed okay because the apps are so well thought out, but this is all done at your own risk.
Secondly, your uk Magic Vodafone prob has 32b board, not 32a.
(There's plenty on this forum. Or the Cyanogen one on the Dream forum works for 32b too.)
You can check with extra step by powering off, then on power again while holding back button. Last digits at top tell you the board details. Menu button gets you back.
0) Install the Android USB driver, connect, mount, then disconnect, etc.
http://dl.google.com/android/android_usb_windows.zip
1) Use google to sync all your contacts, etc. to google account so restore is automatic.
2) Use Astro to Backup your apps etc to the sd card
3) Goto wireless settings, mobile networks, apn, select and make note of your vodafone UK APN details (so you can type your 3g settings back)
4) Use USB to copy your SD card to your PC
5) From your phone, Download Cyanogen recovery. Don't run yet.
http://www.ryebrye.com/blog/2009/08/16/android-rooting-in-1-click-in-progress/
( This basically automates the rooting and booting to this recovery image : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=523558 )
6) From your phone, Download a rom image; the 32b board you prob have in your UK Magic allows you to use 32b ones, I used the Cyanogen one here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=537204
7) Use Astro to move the rom file from \sdcard\download to root of \sdcard
8) Run Cyanogen recovery 1.4 1-click root installed in 5.
Use Backup recovery image
Use Flash recovery
9) Poweroff, home + power to get into the custom recovery image
10) Select Nandroid backup to create new backup (this copies your phone to your SD card)
11) Reboot. Repeat 3 to get the backup of the nandroid folder, and the recovery image created in 7 and 9 onto your PC
12) Run Cyanogen recovery 1.4 1-click root installed in 5 again.
Flash recovery (this makes next boot 'special')
13) Reboot. Poweroff, hold home + power on again.
14) Select WIPE (You did backup your apps and SD card data right?).
15) Then select apply any zip from sd.
Follow instructions to install the Cyanogen rom image you moved to the root of your SD Card in 6 and 7
16) Wait 10 mins or so. The last message about writing root or whatever doesn't explicitly say finished.
17) Reboot.
If you have reboot hang, most people report is because missed WIPE step. Otherwise consult the relevant forum for the Rom you downloaded.
18) Do the new user settings thing. The activation and sync will fail cos you've not got 3G yet.
19) Goto network settings, advanced, APN, type in your vodafone UK APN details (so you can type your 3g settings back)
20) Done
21) If you've got Cyanogen Install the updater from marketplace (search for Cyanogen), or here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=544663
I also installed:
Audio resources unzipped to your SD Card root from the Cyanogen rom pages, this reinstates notifications and ringtones I guess were removed to allow the memory obsessives to keep their phones clean.
SetCPU from this site, to override the default Cyanogen high overclock settings when phone is sleeping.
Cheers
Chris
Hi Chris,
Thanks alot for that, my friend is coming over after the F1 so will give it a go and let you know how we get on!!!!!
Thanks alot for your help!

Hi!
Did you solved the problem, I seem to have the very same problem as you
trying to get cyanogen on my uk htc magic
Hi,
I have been trying to get cyanogen on my vodafone uk htc magic for a few hours now, not even getting close though!
The problem is, i already have the proper 1.6 update which vodafone pushed out a couple weeks back, and now want to root my phone and get cyanogens 1.6 on it. The flashrec application only runs on early versions of cupcake i believe, so my first step was to get that on my phone. (I have been following this: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_MT3G/Magic_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod aswell as trying the guide on this forum thread)
When i quickboot the phone and try to install the 1.5 update, it goes all the way through with the progress bar in the top right, then fails right at the end on 'Model ID Incorrect! Update Fail!'. When i reboot the phone it is just as it was before.
I have also tried putting the cm-recovery-1.4.img file on the memory card and installing that from flashboot but that also fails.
Do you have any ideas / recommendations for getting cyanogen on there?
Thanks,
Aaron

I did get this working in the end, was quite a while ago now though...
I am pretty sure that I used the relentless rooter program to get it working in the end, details/download are here:

HELP ! ROM Update to Android 2.0 / 2.1

Hey Guys at first sorry for my english i'm not good in it. And I'm a Android newbie I just gained a bit exerience with my Touch Diamond but it's broken now..okay but that's not the probleme....
If got a question:
After about 2 days of searching for an android 2.0 or 2.1 ROM I was a little bit confused of the diffrent news everybody was talking about. I'm root on my Hero. That was the first an last thing I made with my device.
1. Everybody is gonna talk about MoDaCo 3.0 but when I was trying to download his ROM my browser never got a request. Is the site down, where that ROM is hosted ?? Could someone give me a working link with this ROM ??
2. Is there a ROM with Android 2.0 or 2.1 outside or even not ??? And if yes are they working well ???
Would be nice if someone can help me =) thanks a lot.
Please answer soon if you know something about that =)
Greetz BassdoxXx
you can get modaco's roms at his website, www.modaco.com.
in the android development section there are some 2.0/1 roms, none of them works flawless, see for yourself if it fits your needs.
Thanks a lot for your fast answer. =)
The problem that i couldn't open the modaco page was my isp -.- i downloaded it at school

What? Does ISP's block that site? Lol, would never happened in Norway
there is a few 2.0+ roms out there for the hero.
most seem to be very usable now.
best sense ui would be lox/behnaam community release on 1.6.

there are two aosp roms worth looking at.
lox aosp ( im using that on a daily basis)

Hello all,
I am having very specific request when it comes to choosing a proper rom for install on to my hero.
I am blind. Stock roms are only running Android 1.5. More robust accessibility features are available starting with Android 1.6 and improving even more with Android 2.0.
So for sure I am forced to upgrade my hand set.
There are various roms, some of their authors have even disable google specific features so I know I can't install such a rom.
All the accessibility efforts are being lead by the google developers.
Most likely these accessibility tools won't be usefull to most of you but please can anyone recommend me a rom where market is working and where the following applications can be installed and used?
- eyesfree suite of applications,
- talkback - the google screen reader for android,
- tts service.
All possible help is already appreciated.
sorry for the double posting. I've accidentally posted twice and I am unable to remove the post.
Hope anybody can help me please.

i am on mcr3.0, i looked in the market, i can find 8 apps for eyesfree, tts is one of these. i didn't try to install one of these, but usually it works. the search for talkback returned nothing.
not that i want to be rude, but wouldn't you be better off with another phone if you are blind? i can not imagine a touchscreen only phone would be suitable for someone who is not able to see... especially because there are great devices out there that have a full qwerty keyboard, and come with android 2.0 out of the box... imho this would be a better solution.
again, the last thing i want to be is rude, but maybe this was your mistake: you posted in the htc hero section of this forum, the hero is a touch screen only device, including a virtual keyboard on the screen. it has only six buttons and a trackball, and two rocker buttons for the volume. just to make clear we are talking about the same device
if you are still up for the hero you could try the 2.1 rom from here: http://htcpedia.com/forum/showthread.php?p=30418&posted=1#post30418
best you try for yourself, it has some drawbacks, but maybe in areas you don't need (afaik syncing with exchange does not work for example, which wouldn't be a problem for me...). otherwise it might be worth to wait another week or two, we all are waiting unpatiently for the official eclair release from htc
keep asking if you need to know more, but maybe open a new thread, since your problems are very specific, and might drown between all the newbies question about "how to root my phone".
Hello,
Thanks for your reply and a great attitude.
Yes it may sound strange I have really got HTC Hero here. I know I'll be having problems with virtual keyboard but also I am afraid accessibility features of Android phones are not really such mastered one can use it daily. For example reading emails and content from the web browser is not yet possible. I just want to try how things work and I would also like to touch the virtual keyboard. If I can memorize computer keyboard and use it daily, typewriter keyboard, nokia mobile phone keyboard, then perhaps I might be able to make some use of this too.
I am sory but here are some more questions:
I haven't yet verified with some sighted friends but... is it possible my hero is running even older version of android like Android 1.5? I've based the assumption that it's most likelly running 1.5 because majority of the devices I was reading on the net are running it.
You've been triyng to locate eyes-free applications on the market but you were unable to find talkback. Are you sure you are running newer version of Android than 1.5?
Talkback is supposed to be installed with Android 1.6 andd 2.0 by default and you should be able to find it in the accessibility menu of your phone. I am not sure how well this applies to the custom roms.
Talkback requires google's accessibility api which is reported to be available on Android 1.6 upwards.
To tell you the full story first I've asked on the eyes-free google group whether some accessibility experts from there can help me but no one knowledgeable enough has replied to my query, so I'm trying my luck here then.
Oh I am really excited since I've got really well formed informative reply.
Thanks again
Edit:
Also, I've seen somewhere in the forums here this leaked HTC rom does not support the market. Has this been rectified already? You know if market does not work then most likelly I won't be able to install these applications I am tallking about.
Also you are mentioning possibility to wait a few weeks until HTC guys role out the official update for Hero. Wouldn't that break chances I will be able to root my device later?
Edit2:
Ooops, I should read better next time. Market works on this rom. The problem is paid apps can't be installed which is hopefully not a big issue for me since most of the accessibility enabled applications are free.
Which of the downloads from Hero 21 do I need?
63.18.55.06JU_6.35.09.26) or No Wipe Download. I will need a wipe I am sure but since this link says nowipe I am ehmmm. confused.
pvdeejay,
Unfortunately there is not an 'official' update for Android 1.6, 2.0 or 2.1 as of yet. There are rumours of one coming out soon, but nothing cast-iron yet.
You are correct in that the Hero runs 1.5. It does say it under Settings | About Phone (bottom item on list)| Firmware Version (bottom on list again), although without a working screen reader, there is probably little use in knowing how to find that.
If you did want to upgrade, I'm sure plenty of people could help find a ROM that would suit. The only issue with that is that you would need a rooted phone with a custom recovery image installed. Unfortunately, a lot of the procedures would not be easy for you, as the software that you might need to use to go through the procedure is probably not designed that well for accessibility tools. I don't know what kind of software you are using, but some of the instructions for making goldcards are quite complex, and involve editing some numbers in a 'table' which could be quite difficult for you, I would imagine.
I'm sure a friend would be able to help you out with making a goldcard/rooting if you did want to install a custom ROM (you'll probably be waiting a while otherwise ). They could even root their phone while doing yours (just share the goldcard between the devices).
Nonetheless, there is probably a ROM out there with little removed from it. I'll have a look just now, but you would need to have your phone rooted to do anything just now.
When it comes to rooting and installing custom recovery image. Do you thing the following instructions might work for me?
These instructions don't require a gold card:
- How to Root HTC Hero and Install Amon Ra Recovery Image
- How to install a custom rom on a HTC Hero
Hello,
Here are some numbers I've asked my friend to read from system -> about screen. The phone interface is in czech so I am unable to get some names translated to english, but I believe some of the geeks will understand these identifiers and might be able to help me what is best:
Code:
firmware: 1,5
63.118.55.O6U|6.35.04.25
2.6.27-a5504199
Build number: 1.76.405.6 146733 CL# 47214 release-keys
Software version: 1.0.0.A6288
pvdeejay,
to sum it up:
the hero definitly runs on android 1.5. there are no roms for older android versions, and a few homebrewn for newer versions, as we said already.
i searched for talkbalk on my 1.5 rom, so it is obvious that i couldn't find it...
about rooting of newer roms: it is just a matter of time, sooner or later there will be always methods of rooting a rom. what i meant by waiting is: wait until the official update is out, then wait a few more hours until the first rooted and customized rom is out
@pvdeejay,
I would have to agree with kendong2 that waiting for the official ROM is probably the best idea for you at the moment. There are no guarantees that an unofficial ROM would help, and it would be another user interface to try and learn.
@kendon,
I noticed he has the original, easily rooted version of the hero. IIRC, that is what I had on my G2 (and had the security unlocked bootloader out the box). If that's the case, would pvdeejay be able to 'fastboot boot' a full system img file for the purposes of testing it out to see if it meets the requirements.
The reason I ask is that I've only ever fastbooted my AmonRA recovery (I didn't flash it, because I never felt any need to). I'm guessing you could fastboot a full img, but I'm not sure about the practical issues of where it would be stored in memory...
Sorry guys originally I believed I am slowly getting into the matter and am begining to understand how flashing / rooting / upgrading home brew firmwares works on these phones.
After these 2 posts I feel like a total noob again.
Now again some very concrete questions:
What about these 2 guides I've posted links to?
Can I somehow got [Recovery] [13-Dec-2009] RA-hero-v1.5.2 installed so I will be able to do nandroid backup and then possibly flash some new roms?
Can I really brick my phone by trying to install amon ra?
Originally I thought the process works as follows:
1) get the custom recovery image installed (that's the amon ra in this case),
2) do a nandroid backup which will dump everything usefull on to the memory card,
3) backup and reformat the card,
4) download a rom, rename it to update.zip, put it onto the root folder of the cart, reboot the hero in recovery mode, do the wipe of the data partition, and run update,
5) reboot again and believe it's good.
Also some very significant bit is the thing you are all calling the radio. I am afraid I've not identified this bit thus it's missing in this summary.
Which files will I need to download if I decide to try Android 2.1 community edition 1.8? Are these files I've copied links to a few posts earlier both needed?
Can you please check this list, identify the things I am missing, and make suggestions and corrections why this may not work on my device based off of those number I tried to put down here?
Even if I won't be able to do this right now I'd be happy to get corrections as I can learn something new.
Of course I won't be doing all this on my own. I will ask my bro to read all the stuff to me and we'll do it according to your advices.
To give some bits about me and my computer skills, I believe I am a Windows power user, Basically I do also understand unix, I know what's bash how the files are arranged in a file system, can use command-line tools, telnet, ssh. I am working as a network administrator here so some background is there really.
Hi pvdeejay,
Answers to your questions here.
You can actually use fastboot to 'temporarily' load up the AmonRA recovery image into memory and run it from there. I do that on my phone, for the simple reason that I can't be bothered ) ) to flash the recovery. Once you get AmonRA running, the first thing you should do is make a Nandroid backup. It will be saved to your SD card, so then get the nandroid directory of your card and save it to your PC (just in case!)
So, here's how you'd go about this.
(Make sure you have the android sdk installed, and that adb and fastboot commands are working). USB cable should be plugged in throughout.
Before you begin, put the ROM you want (ie. Android 2.1 community edition 1.8) into the root of the microSD card (a .zip file).
Code:
adb devices
Should list your phone's serial number
Now turn off the phone, and turn it on with the back key held down (the one at the very bottom right of the device).
You should enter fastboot mode. Now type
Code:
fastboot devices
and you should see the serial number again.
Now type
Code:
fastboot boot AmonRA.img
where AmonRA.img is a file in your present working directory that is the filename of the latest custom recovery image. This does NOT flash your phone, it merely runs the image (pretty much as close as you get to risk free, other than sitting there with a tinfoil hat on )
See screenshot of the recovery image here:
http://www.sizzledcore.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/RA-hero-recovery-image-500x375.jpg
Make the Nandroid backup by choosing 'Nandroid Vx.x Backup' and waiting a while.
If your ROM needs a wipe first (most new ones do), select Wipe data/factory reset. You will lose all your user data on the device (but you've got a nandroid backup just in case)
You're now good to go. So choose "Apply sdcard:choose zip"
Now select the custom ROM zip file you downloaded. It doesn't even need to be called update.zip! Choose it from the list and push trackball.
Wait for the update.zip to go in. Do NOT turn off the device or pull the battery. First boot can take a very long time (upto 30 minutes). Just keep it plugged in via USB and wait...
As for radios, see http://android.modaco.com/content/h...-24-11-hero-roms-radios-in-update-zip-format/ and look at the section titled radios. The latest one is in bold. It is a .zip file as well, that you use these exact same instructions for to install (don't do the wipe or anything like that. Just install the .zip file)

@kendon,
I noticed he has the original, easily rooted version of the hero.
Click to collapse
this is correct so far, i did the same, except i installed the recovery. i play a lot with my phone, the installed recovery image with the nandroid backup is the best i have ever seen for a phone...
@pvdeejay
you always write so much...
i try to answer everything:
the two guides you posted are good for your situation. i never tried flashrec, but from what i read it is safe to use. i installed my recovery image through fastboot, the guide is here: http://android.modaco.com/content/h...ng-the-patched-recovery-image-on-your-device/
i have no idea how this works out for you, but my honest suggestion would be that you have someone seeing assisting you, you CAN brick your phone, though it is not likely if you follow the instructions precisely. the process is not very time consuming at all, so you don't need to bother anyone for days of their time.
edit: and now i read your post to the end and saw that your brother will be helping you, so you are on the right track
once you have the recovery installed you can make nandroid backups, and i would suggest that you do this first thing after installing the recovery, better make a backup too much than one too less...
the 5 steps you described are correct, except there is no need to rename the zipfile anymore, you can select any .zip from your sdcard.
the radio part is the number that begins with 63.18.55.06, then comes two letters and then more numbers. as by now the version can be identified by the letters, with JU being the up-to-date one. in general you can say the newer the better, but you have to try for yourself. start with the newest one, if you have problems go back.
thanks this seems to be pretty doable plus I will easily be able to restore the current data backed using nandroid backup.
Which android SDK do I need the latest one?
The commands I need to type are supposed to be typed on the PC or on the phone? I assume on the PC but I just would like to ensure.
Hero21 1.8 community edition has a recommended radio listed in the first post. Is it necessary to install that one as well? What should I install first the actual rom or the radio? Do I need installing radio at all? Should i do the same with radio i.e. renaming it to update.zip and using amonra to install it?
Also will I be able to use this method even if I install another rom (running amonra without actually flashing it)?
Edit:
sorry guys did not realize renaming to update.zip is no longer needed.
Edit2:
is there an easy way on how to access sd card from windows? I can't just remove the card from phone and insert it into my laptop because I don't have the proper adapter. Previously my boss was using the hero and perhaps it would be nice to backup the sd card first.
Edit3:
uhmmm, installing android sdk is perhaps not as simple as it sounds.
I have just seen this article.
I am on a limited gprs internet connection, can you please suggest sdk features I won't need to save some download bandwith?
- you need only the adb binary (thats adb.exe for windows) from the sdk, the rest is not needed for this.
- install the radio from the 2.1community-rom-thread, it is the newest. install the radio first. DO NOT PULL THE BATTERY until the phone has rebooted completely. if you pull the battery during radio upgrade your phone will be dead. it takes a few minutes, do not panic!
- you can copy the contents of the sdcard via the usb-cable, plug it into your pc and pull down the notification bar...
Do I need to run SDK Setup.exe when I have downloaded android sdk for windows?
Or can I simply run that binary from the command-line without the installation?
Do I need any USB drivers so my phone can be recognized?

Looking for newbie's tutorial of installing new roms

Hi.
Im kinda newbie in all this stuff.
I just want to Install Android 2.1 on my HTC Dream / T-Mobile G1.
But im very very noob in all.
Is there any tutorial with some infos about that?
like...
1. download "any name of program", connect usb to ur phone, install "any name of spl" and so on... ?
i just want this kind of information.
Help me please ;]
p.s. im not sure if im posting in right forums, if not - please move.
Hmmm...I haven't seen anything that simple, and there is risk of bricking your phone. Try having a careful read of some of the threads in the developer section. Also, Cyanogenmod has a few installation guides.
Oh i forgot to add...
i was doing that stuff with help of my friend about 2yrs ago.
I already got HaykuroSPL (i think its one of dangerspl's)
but need more advices, what best rom to install and other stuff.
sorry for my bad english.
if u do really want eclair (2.1) that bad, u culd search for thread in here named "the rom bible".
There are so many choices in that thread.
For eclair, u culd use SuperE by ben.
Just IMO, i'd prefer froyo rather than eclair.
i'd prefer some donut than eclair.
Go grab some donut superD, or HTCClays. Its REALLY THAT FAST!!
Go grab some froyo Biffmod, or superF or maybe if u do wanna taste some new kernel like 2708 terrys + Biffmod rom.
ONLY FOR HTC DREAM LIKE MINE!!
DONT BLAME ME for anything bad happens to ur g1!!
I DONT KNOW, I DONT DO ROGERS, MT3G or anything besides my G1
THIS IS THE EXACT STEP IVE DONE.
IM A NOOB. I BOUGHT a used g1 at ebay 2-3 weeks ago.
AND IVE DONE FLASHING from stock rom 1.6 dmd64 damn it so hard those days to get rooted --> 1.5 stock --> 1.6 donut ADP1 --> 1.0 stock --> CM6 froyo --> biffmod leaving on jet plain --> Super E by ben --> super D by ben--> SUPER F by ben --> back to SUPER D --> HTCClays SUPER FAST Donut --> HTCClays CSDI rem v4 --> SUPER D again I LOVE YOU BEN!! --> Biffmod with ezterrys kernel 2708 --> froyo for trout --> froyo lazzlo --> now trying to bake some froyo for myself and some kernels my friends made. --> (future) getting debian
bought again a used g1 from ebay for daily used and doing easy root using androot from unlockr --> stay in SUPER D.
GUIDANCE:
1. Get ROOTED!!
U culd use the AndRoot method. Try google it.
Keyword: "androot" "g1" "unlockr"
Follow the instructions there. Its really made for noob like us.
check if u rooted or not, download terminal emulator from market
type su then enter
VOILA now u get ROOTED
2. Set some ADB, Fastboot, and a Recovery like amon ra's.
-install adb on ur computer.
dowload android sdk r10.zip
unzip it in C:\
try to find SDKManager.exe in that unzipped files. Run it.
then it fetching some updates from google.
after done fetching updates, it will ask you what files do u want to update.
choose "android sdk platform tools revision 3" and "google usb driver package revision 4"
after done updating, close the sdk manager.
grab ur android and choose setting-application-development-mark usb debugging.
connect ur android to usb computer.
when windows found new hardware and installing drivers, try to locate the drivers urself. point it at c:andro_sdk/extras
after done installing drivers,
now go to win start menu and run cmd.exe
from console windows go to c:\andro sdk 10\andro sdk\platformtools
in c:\andro sdk 10\andro sdk\platformtools>
type adb devices ENTER
then ur serial number shuld appear below "list of devices attached"
if the number not appear, it means ure wrong when installing the drivers.
ADB is an android interface for debugging the devices and override the phone control system from pc console.
Example: when rooted and got su(superuser or admin privilege), u can run any command from the device's terminal. like RM remove or something that need SU privilege.
and from adb, u can do the exact same thing but from ur PC, not from devices terminal.
ADB is easy, but it might be complicated if u dont have some basic of command line.
Now letsgo to Installing recovery section
-download ROM Manager from market.
-open it
-choose install alternative recovery (RA 1.7.0) at the bottompage
(ROM manager primarily use clockwordmod recovery, but they give an alternative like amon ra's recovery.)
after installing RA 1.7.0 recovery, from ROM Manager, choose boot into recovery.
phone then reboot and go into recovery mode.
scroll down and search something backup restore thing.
choose BART Backup.
if it says "u must run it in console" or something close like that, it means u dont have enough free space in ur sd card.
free some space by choosing USB MS TOGGLE in recovery menu.
now it mounts ur sdcard to computer and please free some space until BART BACKUP can be done.
after done creating a bart backup, u shuld copy the backup file (BART folder) to ur computer.
now from recovery menu, choose to power off phone.
then go to FASTBOOT or HBOOT system by pressing holding firmly ur camera button and power button.
HBOOT or bootloader (camera+power)
RECOVERY mode (home+power)
in fastboot or hboot mode u can see DREA1000000 blahblahblah thing..
see it carefully wheter u have DVT or PVT.
if it says DVT then STOP. i cant help you anymore
GO if ure PVT.
from that fastboot/hboot screen u can identify ur RADIO and SPL version.
SPL is something like: HBOOT-1.33.2005
RADIO is RADIO-2.22.23.02
Now, search for the RADIO and the SPL files. Google it, its so easy.
Once you found it, leave it zipped. dont unzip them.
U can found it in this lovely forum.
after u found it all,
Go to recovery mode, and prepare for partitioning the SDCard.
Before partitioning, u shuld see what the roms u wanna install need.
some roms need ext4 and some goes with ext3.
and some roms really set it to go with 96mb SWAP, 512mb ext3, FAT32.
Go to partition sdcard and choose partition SD.
Press home to continue partitioning blahblahblah
it will ask u for sizing ur SD PARTITION
SWAP= 96-128mb (depend on the ROM u want to install, some rom need exact amount of swap, and some roms dont explain it, so its up to you)
there are some debating club keep arguing how big swap file is recomended.
some says 32 mb wuld be the best since the biggest app u have in ur sdcard.
some says 128 is the best.
and some says "woaa, im confused a lot dude, lemme pick the mid one, i'd say go for 96 since i hate number 64. LOL"
and some believe, "bigger is better"
Ext2= 512mb (depend on the rom's need, if it doesnt say anything, go for 512mb, its enough for installing bunch of apps)
remainder? is the remaining space after SWAP and EXT2
Partitioning............
after done, upgrade to ext3..
proceed upgrading to ext4 if the rom can accept ext4..
if the rom doesnt say, please stay in ext3.
ATTENTION, ACHTUNG!!
FIRST, ALWAYS DO A MINIMAL NAND BACKUP, BART BACKUP BEFORE FLASHING ANY FILES!!
FIRST, ALWAYS DO A FULL WIPE (in recovery choose wipe and wipe everything except WIPE SD Ext) before and after FLASHING SOMETHING!!
FIRST, ALWAYS FLASH RADIO FIRST!!
THEN THE SPL FILES!!
AND ALWAYS READ WHAT THE SPL FILES NEED!! (SPL FILES NEED EXACT RADIO FILE)
if u mismatch, ur phone will be a nice PAPERWEIGHT
READY? FOR A NICE PAPERWEIGHT?
after done upgrading to ext3 or 4, in recovery mode, enable USB MS TOGGLE.
it will mount ur SD to computer.
drag RADIO "G1-radio-2_22_23_02.zip" files to sdcard, leave it ZIPPED.
then disable usb ms toggle.
then choose FLASH ZIP FROM SDCARD in recovery mode.
choose the radio file and proceed to flash.
done FLASHING YOUR RADIO?
now choose reboot system now.
it will reboot and comeback to RECOVERY mode.
enable usb ms toggle.
drag spl file to sd.
flash it like you flash your radio before.
done FLASHING SPL?
choose reboot.
comeback to rcoverry mode.
NOW URE READY TO FLASH MOST ROM IN THE BIBLE.
SuperE, Biffmod Froyo Leaving Jet Plain (not the one with ezterrys kernel), CM6 Froyo, and etc, needs dangerSPL.
danger/death SPL is the SPL i show u above.
and the SPL works well with the RADIO i show u above.
Read carefully the requirements of the ROMs.
Always do a wipe after flashing from SDcard.
Example of FLASHING SUPER E (u said u want eclair and i love ben very much):
1. download the super e rom.
it should be "signed-superE103.zip"
2. download the google apps for the rom. it contains market, gtalk, and any apps from google. it should be "gapps-ds-ERE36B-signed.zip"
3. go into Recovery mode (home+power)
4. wipe SD Ext
5. repair SD Ext partition (from menu partition sdcard)
6. flash "signed-superE103.zip" ROM (put it in ur sdcard first using usb ms toggle)
7. reboot
8. do all wipe from recovery except wipe sd ext
9. flash the "gapps-ds-ERE36B-signed.zip"
10. Reboot
11. DONE!!! Now ure running SUPER E by ben
12. Download a ton of apps from market!!
SETTINGS:
SPL 1.33.2005
RADIO 2.22.23.02
FAT32 SDcard
SWAP 96mb
512 ext2 --> ext3
HOPE this GUIDANCE will help u to walk straight the android way of life
Semoga berkenan dengan PETUNJUK yang saya buat. Semoga tidak membuat anda semua semakin bingung.

Personally I recommends SuperAosp with GO Launcher EX (replace ADW Launcher). And recommending setting your SD card partition the same as mine. (see my sig)
hay man was just wondering if you figured it out yet.. i could help you real easy throu recovery so just message me or something if you still need help
hi all,
i know xda usually asks for people to read first before asking. I tried reading up on how to flash a new rom on g1 but i still don't really get it. ( im not very good with computer jargon), so i kinda need some help.
my friend's g1 was flashed with cyanogen mod 6.0.0 and it became very, VERY slow after a while. now, since he's not very big on cell phone hacking, he's come to me (i had an xperia x10 and i flashed that one) for help. but i don't know anything about the g1 and i don't know how to flash from one custom rom to another. can anyone give me some advice? i would really appreciate it.
thanks.
it all depends on what type of recovery he has, what his radio and hboot are and what type of rom he wants...
basic flashing is simple.. yu boot up in recovery by holding home+power.. this will bring up your recovery screen (usually the RA-dream or clockwork..)
in your case since i dont know anything about your phone i would DEFINETLY make a backup.. either nandroid or bart dont matter..
than you want to save that backup file to a pc or jus be sure not to delete it from your sd
than you can wipe your phone= data factory reset, cache, sd partition etc.. if neccessary.
than you want to repair your sd and make sure you are on correct ext.. some roms reqire ext2 some require 3, some 4 you get the picture..
at this point you are clean and ready to flash another .zip rom in recovery mode.. there all these lil details you gotta look out for or it wont work so send be back some info on the device and ill be glad to help out more!!

[Q] question: step to step guide to install custom roms?

hi! i'm a new guy here, and i have an lg gt 540 with the 1.6 android version
i'm a total beginner in these things of smartphones, but i'd really like to upgrade it and put a 2.2 or 2.3 version of android, but i'm not so sure how to do it
i searched for topics and guides here but none of them were too clear of them, and any of them were for my especific telephone
so i'm asking the obvious haha, anyone could help me and post a step to step guide for installing a custom rom in this especific cell phone? please, i kinda hate this right now, i can't install anything XD
and well if not, or in addition, if someone wants to help me step by step through pms or msn or somethign like that, it would be great too!
and well, the last one, if i can get a guide to do it, wich rom could you recommend me? to get all the potential of this cell phone XD hah
well, that's all, hope you can help me, i know a lot of guys ask the same, but i didn't see any for this lg...
thanks in advance!
Guide for unlocking fastboot and flashing custom roms.
http://androidforums.com/optimus-gt...nogenmod-7-android-2-3-4-avaliable-gt540.html
My app root toolbox will flash a recovery image, all download links in my signature.
For root access use z4root. Don't update to 2.1 because z4root doesn't work on some versions of it.
Also have a look here before you change roms/unlock fastboot

Hey there
Nice to see you're still on 1.6 , We really need your help right now!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1123968
If you haven't already rooted , Follow these steps :
1. Download http://bit.ly/9wAKC5 and transfer to phones SD Card
2. Download Astro File Manager in Market (Or any other file manager)
3. Open the file manager and locate the application you downloaded
4. Click on the File and Install the Universal Androot .apk
5. Run Universal Androot and select Superuser for 2.0 - 2.2
6. Click 'Go Root'
7. Follow any restart prompts
8. Go back into market and download Terminal Emulator
9. Follow the instructions from the CODE box on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1123968
10. The files will be created in the backup1.6 folder on the SD
11. Using a computer, .ZIP these files and upload them to the filesharing site of your choice
12. Share the link to us
13. Be very proud of yourself, you've helped us all
Then after , I would install 2.1 using LG Software Updater (Easiest Method)
But EVERYTHING is deleted , Including contacts and SMS when doing so. To backup contacts , click Contacts , Press Menu and press Export then Export to SD
To backup SMS I recommend SMS Backup and Restore from Market.
Hope I helped Jamie
haha okei, i'll try to do that so i can give you a recovery imagine of 1.6
and you told me to upload to official 2.1 android through lg site,, i am known that 2.1 is just, mmm , as 1.6 XD i mean, you have problems to install things in the sd, and many apks does not work, and the flash is dead x.x haha
but well, i'll do that first before upgrading to another version!

use this until you flash mgldr:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893948
then go to this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044830
because nowadays many roms use cwm method instead of daf.
and you can use this tool for many parts of your work:
