Can u flash a diff rom with android Recovery

Hey i was following the idiot proof guide to rooting but the step to install clockwork recovery.zip is missing the dl. U need the .zip to flash the recovery to with android recovery so u can avoid adb (which for some reason i cannot get to work on this pc But it did work perfect on my other pc but its power supply just went out so at the moment i can not adb) and avoid SU ways.. the rom dosent have su in it after rooting. So i cannot use terminal app or adb.
my question is when i boot holding down vol and get to that white screen then goto recovery it takes me the the "!" screen i then hold up vol and power and i get to android recovery... If i factory reset and wipe cache cam i change a rom.zip to update.zip and flash it that way to get a rom with su so i can install clockwork recovery?
So basically i am asking can i use android recovery(not clockwork or recovery RA) to flash a new rom with su?

No you can't.
Clockwork recovery doesn't work properly when wiping. Use toasts method in the sticky. The recovery is also there.

when flashing rom > E: can't open cache/recovery/command

I've searched on here but can not find an answer for my particluar error.
From Rom Manager I select Install ROM from CD card. When it boots up I get the red exclaimation mark. Then i press volume up and power.
The first thing i see is android recovery with E: can't open cache/recovery/command
According to ROM manager I have ClockwordMod Recovery 2.5.1.3
ever seen this? any way around it?
Thanks
Try flashing recovery again via ROM manager. For some users flashing it just once doesn't work.
I've tried flashing clockwork a few times. Still no luck..
Do you have ENG S-OFF? If so you could try via fastboot.
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery_x.x.x.x.img
ClockworkMod Recovery 3.0.0.5 --> HERE -- (CM7)
ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.1.2 --> HERE -- (Everything Else)
I have the same exact problems, do i need to have S-OFF also, i read this threat
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537 , it said I need to downgrade it first, is that true?
Tagged. Have the same problem.

[Q] i have tried everything!!!!

I perm rooted my shift and would like to install cm7 rom
But I can't get into recovery to do nandroid etc...because I get stuck on the htc screen.
I don't have my laptop anymore so I am using terminal emulator.
I have PC36IMG.zip & recovery.img in root of sdcard.
su
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
I get image not found if flash_image is in sdcard root
But I get scannning error if the flash_image is in system/bin..
I have search google etc...
Can I get some help please???
If you're perm rooted already, just download rom manager from the market and use it to flash recovery.
Thx for replying..I have tried that..I still get stuck on the htc screen...
I actually got terminal emulator to pick up the recovery.img
When I type
su
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
I now get the blank line
But its telling me reboot is not permitted.
Try quickboot from market
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
Thx For replying and I have tried quickboot as well...
su
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
Then I opened quickboot in tap recovery and I still got stuck on the htc screen...
I guess the question is why is this happenning?
I am perm rooted with visionary that's the only thing I have done.
Never give up!!!
I have fixed the problem..I went Into rom manager re install clockwork
Than boot recovery with quickboot and I got into recovery mode.
What I have realize is that every situation is different and just have to read and try to figure it out safely on your on!!!
But I have read quickboot works and it did for me...thx!!!!

[i9023][JB]4.1.1 JB on NXS with "status 7" ERROR

This is my first tutorial...
Be pacient :fingers-crossed:
Fist you need unlocked-bootloader, and recovery installed on your NeXus S...
if you have instaled stock 4.0.4 you can go to the last step... But going to start...
I can't attachment any file, but you have here all the stock you need from 2.3.3 to 4.0.4...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445635
The 4.1.1 stock you can found here...
Stock 4.1.1 JRO03H for i9023
Well, now i have instaled TWRP "Team Win Recovery Project " you can download from here, but you can do it with any recovery...
Team Win Recovery Project 2.2.0 for Nexus S
This one is to flash recovery from Android Terminal Emulator,
Mini ADB
And to finish downloads you can download SuperUser...
Super User 3.2 RC2
Then 3, 2, 1.... GO!!!
this step only if you want...

If you want to install recovery you can install from fastboot, in the windows terminal, at fastboot folder you can type:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.2.0-crespo.img
Or you can temporary boot it to keep the system stock typing:
Code:
fastboot boot your-recovery.img
Or you can do it from the Terminal Emulator of android
You have to move mtd0.img to /sdcard/ and mtd0.img to /data/local/ with your root file explorer and then, you have to change xxx by the folder you have downloaded, and type:
Code:
su
flash_image recovery /sdcard/xxx/openrecovery-twrp-2.2.0-crespo.img
Ok, now we'll install 2.3.3 stock from the recovery, after wipe cache, wipe Dalvik cache. And reboot.
After reboot, again to the recovery. Install 2.3.4, make all wipes again. And reboot ¿again? yes today we will reboot many times...
Then we will do the same with 2.3.6, 4.0.3. Don't forget to reboot between each one...
Now you can install superuser, wipe Dalvik cache, and reboot... ¿again?
the 4.0.4 upgrade will do by OTA but you can do flashing downloaded 4.0.4 from recovery, wipeing all caches...
And finally you have to flash 4.1.1 from recovery make all wipes and enjoy your rooted Jelly Bean on you amazing Nexus S...
NOTE: if you lost super user flash it from recovery....

There is no need to flash recovery, it is enough to temporary boot it to keep the system stock.
Code:
fastboot boot your-recovery.img

You can't directly boot to recovery. To do that just power off your device and press vol+, vol- and power button to get to recovery.

I can do boot into recovery directly by updater app or by the reboot into recovery option in Resurrection Remix. Yeah also by your method too and I have tried by every method.
Did you format data after installing recovery from fast boot?
First download the attached file and place at sdcard (internal memory) at the root.
Then if you don't have Terminal emulator app installed on your device, go and grab it first. On installation, open up the app and type at prompt exactly as below.
su
dd if=/sdcard/1.img of=dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/aboot
reboot
Be careful to type aboot not boot in the above commands, otherwise you will enter into boot loop.
After this, you will be able to boot into custom recovery either by emulator or any other app capable of booting the device into recovery mode.
Edit: Another pre-condition - you must have rooted your device before proceeding with above method.
