when flashing rom > E: can't open cache/recovery/command - Desire HD General

I've searched on here but can not find an answer for my particluar error.
From Rom Manager I select Install ROM from CD card. When it boots up I get the red exclaimation mark. Then i press volume up and power.
The first thing i see is android recovery with E: can't open cache/recovery/command
According to ROM manager I have ClockwordMod Recovery 2.5.1.3
ever seen this? any way around it?
Thanks

Try flashing recovery again via ROM manager. For some users flashing it just once doesn't work.

I've tried flashing clockwork a few times. Still no luck..

Do you have ENG S-OFF? If so you could try via fastboot.
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery_x.x.x.x.img
ClockworkMod Recovery 3.0.0.5 --> HERE -- (CM7)
ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.1.2 --> HERE -- (Everything Else)

I have the same exact problems, do i need to have S-OFF also, i read this threat
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537 , it said I need to downgrade it first, is that true?

Tagged. Have the same problem.

[Q] Cannot get into recovery mode after rooting by using super one click method

Hello all,
I have been using the super one click method to root my HTC Magic Saphhire 32A.
It works well so far albeit need to alter some SU files in the program. Running of terminal emulator with the command prompt SU confirmed that I have the superuser rights.
Now the problem is whenever I use ROM manager to reboot in recovery, the phone restart, HTC logo shows, then the next screen I see is a big asterisk and a phone image, after this I pressed Home + power, the screen manage to switch to Android system recovery utility, BUT with only 3 options:
1) Reboot system now
2) Apply sdcard:update.zip
3) Wipe data/factory reset
And in the end of the screen, there is one line highlighted in red: E: can’t open /cache/recovery/command
After the phone been rebooted, I switched off the phone. And Pressed vol - with power button, same issue happen too with the asterisk sign shows on the screen. After unrooting it, the phone recovery mode are back to normal with the 3 androids in skates appear on the screen.
Have anyone face the same problem? Any ways to sort this out? I am planning to back up my stock ROM, and wanted to try out some cyanogenmod ROM. I tried Googled and read lots of forum post but left without a solution. Any helps are appreciated! Cheers!
p/s: I am a noob in Android OS. XD
I have the legend and these is a process of booting the recovery from there as update.zip. have you tried renaming the ROM update.zip and flashing it from there?

I fiddled with the ROm manger setting by choosing "delete recovery prior to flashing", and now it makes it worse.
I selected "reboot in recovery" in ROM manager and the phone reboot, but just stuck at the HTC start up screen.
I plugged in the phone while trying another recovery reboot, and it still stuck at the HTC screen, but with a red line on the top saying "fastboot USB". Gosh I think i am going no way with this...
E:Can’t open /cache/recovery/command
Same fault here mytouch 3g unlocked at&t 32b downgraded too cupcake and tried
getting E:Can’t open /cache/recovery/command
home and power button down still cant get you in recovery? you cant flash any other working rom?

Did you flash custom recovery with ROM manager? Or you just rooted the phone with 1 click method?
Sorry for the late reply. I am just back from overseas business trips. I used Clockmod ROM Manager and did a backup, tried reboot in recovery, and the phone rebooted itself but stuck at the HTC logo now.
I can confirm that the phone is rooted with super user permission.
The reason being the phone didn't manage to get into recovery mode might be due to the missing recovery.img in the phone. Pushing the img file to phone through Clockmod didn't work apparently, so I tried command prompt from PC fastboot flash recovery c:\recoveryxyz.img. It failed too with an error remote failed.
I tried using the terminal emulator in the phone and tried pushing the recovery image again and it didn't happen too. Can some one please help? Cheers!
Download ROM manager and you have option that says install custom recovery it will install Clockwork, and you have flash alternative recovery it installs amon ra's recovery i prefer most
Will try it tonight and revert for the result. Cheers!
I have tried flashing alternate ROM through ROM manager and for once it managed to boot into recovery mode. BUT the device hang right after that, I can't select any of the options and have to pull the battery out to force shutdown.
I tried using fastboot flash recovery *.img remotely through my PC while the phone is in fastboot USB mode, and my command prompt stated FAILED (remote: not allow)
Urgh, I think I might have missed something here... Could some one please help? Cheers!

OK here is the thing did you chose right model of your phone? HTC magic is 32A and mytouch and something else is for 32B you maybe flashed the wrong one?
Thanks WoblyGoblin for taking your time to help. Yes, I have selected the correct phone model. I chose HTC Magic.
Did you install the recovery?

Please refer to the previous post for more info. Cheers!
Ok here is the solution for you use this guide but download this apk and this recovery.
If you dont have 1.5 android but 1.6 download Terminal emulator from market and when you start it type first:
su
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img
Hello mate,
i just tried the method and I am stuck at FlashRec backup recovery image step.
I clicked on backup recovery image, but there is a command prompt that says:" backup FAILED: Could not run command.
FYI, I am running on Android 1.5. On the edge of giving up rooting and loading a custom ROM now and without a MARKET apps on the phone.

And commands that i gave you?
yes mate, have tried flash_image recovery command from the terminal app and tries to restart in recovery without any result.
I have did a few research and read up and found out that I am stuck with the south east asia Magic model without the google based support, with no market apps and it is perfected SPL.
Quite upset by it. LOL!

help with cyanogen Rom upgrade from 5.0.7 to 6.0.0

I have a rooted mytouch original with cyanogen 5.0.7/android 2.1 and want to upgrade to cyanogen 6.0.0/android 2.2.
Can I just install the new rom, or are their prior steps to prepare for this.
Thanks

Check CM wiki.. all the info is there!
yes, I had already read through the cm wiki before posting. I just read through it a second time, though the specific question that I had asked was not addressed as far as I could tell. Don't want to flash a new rom without first knowing its the right step to take. So if someone doesn't mind answering the question...
Just do a nandroid backup. Then you flash the CM 6 over the old one, do a cache+dalvic wipe and start it up.... It should be ok.
If not, then just revert back with the knowledge that you have to do a complete wipe, meaning that you need to start from scratch.
I now have initiated flashing new rom, starting with backing up data and wiping cash. However, I am now unable to go into recovery mode, whereas the phone is stuck on the logo when attempting to do so. I had installed through rom manager clockworkmod 2.5.0.1, got the message it installed correctly.
Here are the methods I have used to go into recovery:
1. click on "reboot into recovery"
2. backup current rom
3. flash alternative recovery with RA Recovery v.1.7.OH downloaded by rom manager, and use rom manager to restart into recovery mode
4. turn phone off, try to press home and power button together, for the new RA and the new clock work mod programs.
will not go into recovery mode, gets stuck on the boot up logo. Phone otherwise works fine, on the older Cyanogen Rom..., just can't go into recovery mode which I need to do to upgrade.
My original recovery was RAv1.2.0G.img, but this was I assume replaced by the rom manager.
In case this is important, my other software versions I have been using the past year:
Hboot 1.33.2005 (sapp30000), Cpld 10, Radio 2.22.19.261
will not go into recovery mode, gets stuck on the boot up logo. Phone otherwise works fine, on the older Cyanogen Rom...
any suggestions?
You flashed wrong recovery version...
You need RA Recovery v.1.7.OG and not H as stated above.
If all ****s up, then use my guide (check my signature) to flash a custom recovery... just skip the steps about root since you already got that!
Remember, G and NOT H.
lost recovery
mumilover
I do actually have v.1.7.0G installed, not H (my bad).
it just will not go into recovery.
Please let me know where your guide is, but right now I have been unable to communicate with my device through my xp desktop, get the "device not found" error (I assume you are suggesting that). Not sure how this will help though, since I already seem to have the correct recovery image installed.
Any help you can offer would be appreciated.

Download my fastboot commander (CHECK MY SIGNATURE, magic version).
Restart into fastboot mode.
Download this recovery image:
http://rapidshare.com/files/387932919/recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0G.img
Using the tool and your eng spl, you can just flash the recovery image on the phone.
Just use the first tab -> recovery button -> navigate to the above image -> click "flash recovery". Done.
Restart into recovery by home + power combo.
You could also try this command:
Code:
adb shell reboot recovery
to force it to boot into recovery from the system.
[Problem is fixed. Thanks for your help.
I used my mac bootcamp (could not get sdk to run on my desktop or mac), and could find my device through adb. Then I pushed a separate version of the RA 1.7.0 G (the one the came with rom manager did not work!) to my phone via flash command. Voila, I am now able to go into recovery mode. 6.0 is installed and running.

unble to go into recovery mode

My recovery mode does not work.
I have a rooted original mytouch that I have been using with Cyanogen 5.0.6 ROM for a year, decided recently to upgrade to 6.0.0. After downloading ROM manager premium, and installing the recommended recovery mode program, clockworkmod 2.5.0.1., I initiated flashing new rom, starting with backing up data and wiping cash. However, I am now unable to go into recovery mode, whereas the phone is stuck on the logo when attempting to do so.
Here are the methods I have used to go into recovery mode via rom manager
1. through clicking on "reboot into recovery"
2. through clicking on backup current rom
3. flash alternative recovery with RA Recovery v.1.7.OH downloaded by rom manager, and use rom manager to restart into recovery mode

Let me get this straight... RA Recovery 1.2.0G worked and you tried RA Recovery 1.7.0H and you can't get that to work... right?
Wow... or am I just missing something?
Why not give RA Recovery 1.7.0G a try instead. Or better yet... since your using ROM Manager... try Clockwork for MyTouch/Ion devices for US T-Mobile devices or Magic for all SenseUI (native) devices.
I had not needed to use recovery for a long time, since I have just been happy with the phone.
Now I wanted to upgrade, and installed rom manager, and then rom manager directed me to upgrade the recovery software, which eliminated my original 1.2.0G, replacing it with clockwork for mytouch, which did not work. i then tried clockwork for Magic, which did not work. Through Rom manager I then installed and tried ra recovery 1.7.0H, which also did not work.
based on your suggestion, I downloaded RA Recovery 1.7.0G to my computer. It has been a year since I have attempted to flash software to my phone. What is the easiest way to flash 1.7.0G to my phone?
Thanks!

1.7.0H will NOT WORK!
You MUST use G.
I suggest by fastboot.
place the recovery.img file (or whatever you want to name it. no spaces!) in c:\android\recovery (directory is just an example... feel free to use your own... again... no spaces!)
Power up your phone in bootloader
Then in cmd prompt
cd c:\android\recovery (or whatever directory you use)
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img (or whatever you named it)
Reboot in your new recovery.
Note... this will only be effective if you have S-OFF.
fastboot flash recovery 'recovery image name'
Make sure it's in the ADB folder.
EDIT: Did you really create a duplicate thread for the same problem? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894289
Something is not working here. my bootloader screen on my phone states that s-off.
I have placed phone in fastboot mode, and when connected to computer shows "fastboot usb".
I placed the recovery file on my desktop, directory c:\adb. In this directory is the adb.exe file.
I have now placed the fastboot.exe file in this directory as well
At my desktop command prompt, I go to the c:\adb directory, then type
fastboot flash recovery 'recovery image name'
I get the following message 'waiting for device'
As stated, it has been a while since I have used adb, so perhaps something else needs to be in the desktop c:\adb directory.
Sorry about the double post, not sure how to delete it.

a summary of my problem
I am unable to go into recovery mode.
I have a rooted mytouch, running Cyanogenmod 5.0.7 with android 2.1. I have used it for about a year without problem, and without trying to make changes. Naturally, recovery mode worked last year when I first rooted it.
I recently initiated efforts to upgrade to cyanogen 6.0.0 with android 2.2
I started by installing Rom Manager, and immediately after using Rom Manager to install clockworkmod recovery, after which I attempted then to back up my current rom before upgrading it.
I have since been unable to go into recovery mode, using these methods
1. the features of rom manager, e.g., reboot into recovery
2. flash alternative recovery ra recovery v1.7.0G
3. with both 1.7.0G and clockworkmod, attempting to boot into recovery by powering up holding down home key and power key.
My original recovery, before installing rom manager and then installing clockworkmod was RAv1.2.0G.img, but I replaced this with the Rom manager.
In case this is important, my other software versions :
Hboot 1.33.2005 (sapp30000), Cpld 10, Radio 2.22.19.261
Any help would be appreciated.

Recovery Problem

Have a non-Sprint Hero, that will only boot to ClockworkMod Recovery and gives error E:Can't read MISC: (no space left on device). I have flashed several ROMs same error. Tried to update with RUU from PC, but get error that it can't recognize device. But I can see the SD card from my PC, so I know its connected. Any ideas? Thanks
I have not seen that error before!
Have you tried booting into the bootloader by pressing volume up and power and then try running an ruu. The ruu can not be ran in recovery.
If you are trying to get it back on Sprint you'll have to do some other things. You might also try flashing a different recovery. When you boot into recovery can you adb shell into it?
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
It will only go in the Clockworkmod recovery, vol- power button doesn't work. Think internal rom partitions are corrupt, when I send adb device command get "0000000000 and recovery".
Try flashing the recovery again.
Did you use to have firerats partition manager?
Sent from my HTC Hero CDMA using XDA App
Problem solved. The clockworkmod was corrupt, all its features worked but wouldn't allow the software to boot. I re-flashed clockwork using adb and corrected the problem. Thanks for all your help.

Ok you're confusing me now. What is it you're trying to do? Are you trying to flash recovery on the device or flash something else. Because what ever you're going to do, you have to flash recovery from rom maneger first. So if you have not done that yet, do that first.
Just boot into the device, open rom manager and click on flash clockwork recovery and follow the on screen instructions.

Don't reboot into recovery from rom manager. Turn off the device and boot into bootloader by pressing volume down then power button and hold till the device turns on. The with the volume button go down to recovery and press the power button to go into recovery. Once you do that come back and tell us what color the text is in recovery.
EDIT: actually, asking you to tell us what color rocovery is was a bad idea. Now that I thought bout it the stock rovery and newest almost look the same color.
Better yet boot into hboot by pressing vol down and power. Once you're in hboot make sure it says s-off right on top. I shouldve asked this from the biginning. If you had a s-off.

I think you done the ClockworkMod recovery flashing incorrectly or the flashing through rom manager didn't work for you.
Try via terminal emulator or via fastboot . This methods may work

We already figured out through pm. The device doesn't have s-off is still on s-on.
We came to the conclusion that they need to reroot and have s-off. I sent the op to the unlockr method since they are already using visionary.
