Hi all!
I'm using my Dell Streak (1.6) as a PDA, I don't even have a SIM card installed (I have a separate phone).
Because the cell-standby drains a lot of battery (even without a sim card! probably for emergency calls) and Android 1.6 doesn't allow me to disable it, I'm staying in the airplane mode most of the time.
However, you can't charge the phone when in airplane mode (can someone explain to me why?). There's an icon in the notification area which is disturbing all the time but when you connect the cable, you don't usually see that nor remember that.
The result is that I've often left the phone "charging" overnight only to see it low on battery on the next day.
Is there a way/app that would let me charge my phone without manually disabling the airplane mode?
Thanks!
sounds like a job for Tasker! Though I'm not sure it'll actually detect the power. Might be workable if you are plugging the phone into a USB port. Does the phone detect a USB connection when in airplane mode?

Tasker will definitely handle it.

Could someone with Tasker please try it? Cause I'm not sure the "charge-up" event will pop up because the device isn't actually charging.

Dear XDA developers,
I have a problem with my HTC HD2. Every time I use the phone it's like its stuck in car-kit mode. Each email I write each phone call I make happens in landscape mode. It's like it doesnt use the built-in meter that detects the phone-position. At first it displayed the NaviPanel app all the time. Having that dis-abled only keeps the phone in landscape mode.
And for some reason the phone's home-button is also dis-abled in car kit modus.
I heard that this had something to do with the wire you use for your phone to connect it to the PC/Charger with. I used my Nokia cable which could of caused the problem. Because every time I hook it up to my default charger cable everything goes back to normal, it finds the device's position and the home-button works normally.
Is there a way to completely dis-able the car-kit-modus? Maybe in RegEdit?
Someone maybe had the same problem?
Any thought/suggestion/solution/idea is welcome.
Your sincerely,
Rick Lamers - Proud owner of a HTC HD2
Disable car kit mode
Hi Ricky, welcome to HTC world and good to say you've seen the light over the Nokia phones.
This is indeed your cable that you are using to charge. The HD2 uses a connection to sense that the phone is connected to a car kit and the Nokia charger and adapters make this connection.
You can easily disable it though, just go to:
Settings>Menu>All Settings>System>Car Kit Mode and de-select 'Auto Launch NaviPanel...'
Should mean you can use your charger and connection cable without launching Car Kit Mode
Same thing happened to me... what I did is insert the microusbcable on your phone, then with your phone turned on, (do not connect the cable to anything on the ohter end) move it around very slowly, keeping an eye on your phone, you will see you can activate carkit mode if you move it long enough, as well as deactivate it, just be careful mate, do not fore your phone connector or your cable (you might break it)..... I noticed that I accidentaly (with normal use) had like moved the connector on the phone slightly, this causing the phone to think I was in carkit mode... after I did this (4 months ago) never had this problem again. Hope it helps.
I noticed that the phone turns the moment the charger is connected to it (or if the USB cable is attached from a PC that is on). There doesn't seem to be a way to charge the phone with it switched off.
Do the others notice the same behaviour or is this a problem with my Omnia? Is there a way to disable this?
Yeah I have the same thing you cannot charge it while it is turned off. This is true from all the iPhones I have used aswell. It isn't a fault don't worry about it.
I don't know if it can be disabled but why would you want to out of interest?
I tend to charge the phone at night and don't want to receive calls.....

Flightmode is your friend
Settings -> Flightmode on
That cuts all wireless connections, you won't receive calls or SMS at night.
Noticed this too, my phone also reboots when I connect it to a charger too - anyone else had that happen?
With some reading i;ve been doing, *only recently started reading up about li-ion bats* seems they might be on to gain optimal charge / long life at the right voltage.
http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_lithium_ion_batteries
might be why...
I'm doing more research into it. But another reason i can think of is, When it's on. Boot up time isn't there. Flight mode is. I use it rather than turning a phone off now, saves turning on the other end, i can play a game, watch a video, listen to music on the plane and charge it on a socket ready for the other end.
Yes, i noticed this issue also... as i remember, in a small book that came with my phone there is written you can charge you phone when its switched off - it will charge faster.. but theres not written how never mind, its like that, and thats the way it is...
Oh this would be bad. I charge my phone at nights too, and have it next to my bed. If the screen would be on it would be too bright to sleep with (I'm a very light sleeper). Hmm...

No, the screen won't be on
The screen turns off after a minute or you can press the standby button manually.
It's just that you can't switch off the phone completely when it is connected to a charger.

Maybe it's some kind of power management that the OS is doing therefore it needs to be on.
Battery life is great on WP7 after all.
It's confirmed by pocketnow.com
the WP7 OS doesn't allow you to charge while the phone is off
This behavior started last night after activating Monitor power usage in the battery settings section. Deactivating it didnt help. I tried removing battery and that has not worked either. Im down to going back to stock or maybe even reinstalling an earlier Miui backup I have to see if that works first. Any advice would be appeciated, thanks.

And what's the problem with the screen turning on when you connect usb? It's normal and it also happens in stock roms.
I don't know if it's the same thing, but something similar happened to me too. What i did was just cleaning the micro-usb connector on the bottom of the phone. This never happened to me anymore.

you just created a connection between 2 pins in the connector, the same as when you plug in the charger, its normal behaviour, dont worry about it.
Go into Application settings (or Development, can't remember where it is on MIUI) and turn off "keep screen awake". It's for developers who don't want the phone to sleep while debugging.
Ok I think I finally found what was causing this. It only happens when USB debugging is turned off. When I turn it back on Im able to charge without the phone automatically booting back up. Im not sure if this is a bug. Should it be behaving like this?

Verrified that and its turned off. Turning debugging mode off causes my issue though. I find that kinda wierd.
USB debugging mode has always been weird on MIUI - on my GS2 it doesn't recognise that the USB cable has been disconnected until you reboot the phone.
Thanks for the tip, I've been wondering the same thing myself. This was a pain when I was trying to charge my phone at work with it off. Thanks.
PS: I really wish people would properly read the post before answering with the standard "it's normal, don't worry about it" etc. See it far too often.
Havnt been able to find a fix so far. What I do is I keep debugging mode off for everyday use and just turn it on when I need to recharge the phone over night. That way the phone stays off.
Sorry guys actually I am not a wp7 user but my friend who owns a HTC Surround ATT Version T8788 insisted to ask me for help on his phone. His phone has a little heart-shaped icon over the battery bar which i believed that it is battery save mode for htc wp7 phone based on my research. I do actually did all possible ways to get rid of this problem but still it cannot be resolved.
What I did:
1: I tried to charge the phone (via pc usb cable and adapter) in long term but it failed, in contrast the phone would switch on and off rapidly. My Zune and PC cannot detect the phone via pc usb cable.
2: I pressed on the settings mode in order to try to disable the battery save mode but when I was getting in there it freeze for a while and it popped out to the main home screen. It did not allow me to get into the settings mode every time unfortunately. Same goes to any other apps and modes in the phone.
3: I failed to get into recovery mode since there has not much battery left. The purpose I did so is because I wanted to try to do a factory reset over the phone.
4: I tried pulling out and in the battery for 30seconds but still not gonna switch on the phone unless it is charging (but still i face the problem on (1) while charging).
5: I bought a new battery which i believed it has at least 50% of the battery life in it but it is still not allowing me to get into settings mode to disable the battery save mode. Not just settings mode but other apps and modes as well.
My apology again because I really lack of idea on resolving my friend's phone so the only way I can do now is to post this thread in htc surround ATT Version T8788 xda forum. Lastly, I do appreciate someone who can help out to solve this. Million thanks for any of your reply and co-operations.

1. Are you using OEM cable? No adapter should be required, if you are using a different cable pc might not acknowledge phone.
2. How are you accessing settings? Settings can be accessed from "Settings" app on app list; swipe to left, swipe up, tap to open.
3. ?
4. See 1., also try charging @ wall outlet it will charge much facter than through USB, again OEM cable recommended.
5. I do not think that batteries com with 50% charge. I could be wrong but when I purched my device it had only a residual charge ( enough to boot and make a few short calls).
If low battery charge is issue you should also receive message "Battery Critically Low" upon boot. If you cannot access any apps once booted and icon is still appearing over battery you do not have enough of a charge. If your only option is to charge though pc give it plenty of time it should chare even if not using recommended cable. Charging will be indicated by flashing red LED. Turning off your screen should speed up the process (it will take several hours plugged in to USB).
Hope this helps.
Thanks for your response and patience! Actually i just resolved the phone problem Monday ago.

can you tell me how did you resolved this problem as I also have same problem with my Surround.
thanks in advance.
I just rooted by phone with this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45692679
(basically replace a file g2_security on the sdcard and reboot)
After the root was complete and I'd rebooted the phone a couple times, my USB connection keeps getting lost. This started exactly after the root, so I assume it's somehow related. Has anyone else seen this problem?
So far my attempt to fix it has only included disabling usb debugging and changing the usb mode to charge only. Other suggestions welcomed.
Try changing USB cable

I'm having similar problems
Did you have any luck resolving this?
I'm having this problem with one of my chargers, and when I plug the phone into a computer it says charging but the battery doesn't move at all.

Similar issue with mine after root. Regardless of what setting its on it will charge through the Aux but wont play music through apps like it did before in my car. Music will come out of the speakers but the car wont recognize the phone. Shows "AUX not recognized" Might go back to stock to see what it was.
I am having issues charging as well.
This morning the phone while showing the charge icon in the battery display only was at 55%. I noticed by accident that when the screen is off and I get a notification via text or mail that charging quits. The icon shows as if it charging but the red LED no longer is visible and if you have the screen on long enough the % begins to decrease. I have to unplug and plug again for the charging to take hold.
Would anyone else mind testing a text when the screen is off, charger on and see if this disables their charge?
My problem seemed to stop after a few hours.. I don't know what changed. The host computer didn't reboot, the phone did reboot maybe another time or two, the cable stayed the same. No idea what happened.
