Fastest rom - EVO 4G General

Long time XDA reader, first time poster...
I like speed and I am not a huge fan of eye candy...Who can recomend a rom that fits the bill? I did check out the Wiki but it seems to be out of date after checking rom threads.
EViO 1.3.1 seems to be the one so far.

For simplicity and speed ... hard to beat pure aosp ... Cyanogen Mod 6.

Then flash the snap kernel and you'll have the fastest rom.

I've been using cm6 for about a week and it's a great rom. I would be happier with better battery life, but oh well. It still lasts me all day and then some.
It's a real snappy rom too. I haven't noticed any lag at all since I've installed it. I'm also using one of King's kernels as well.
I've tested some others over the course of the week, and right away I noticed sluggishness in those other roms. I always end up flashing back to CM6 within an hour.

CM6 for the win
CM6 with some tweaks (see below) screams and gets pretty good battery life to boot with the right kernel. Also make sure that you have no corrupt/unsupported media files on your card as this causes "Media Server" service to constantly attempt to index/access the offending file.
My tweaks so far:
Market only (all other "gapps" not installed)
Standalone calander app that doesn't sync to anything (using AnCal at the moment)
Lightweight launcher (using Zeam at the moment)
2D gallery (3D gallery removed)
No widgets
Plain/small single color wallpaper

CM6 + Snap 7.6 & Turbo = "fastest" ROM, CM6 + Snap 7.5 = longest lasting ROM.

this new nightly and its kernel is doing some good work. that thing is fast as nuts and battery is good, better than king's CFS #1 kernel...because I dont have to use setcpu. And i've never noticed a difference, speedwise, with snap 7.6 and turbo. all seems the same to me
but if it does make a difference..then that superevo rom with snap 7.6 turbo should be insane. since apparently it scored like 2700+ with Quadrant...not saying quadrant means much, but a 2700+ definitely doesnt mean nothin

Only tried a handful of roms, but I've been very happy with Fresh 3.1, HTC's newest kernel; no task killer, setcpu, cpuanything, battery savers, ect. - Never gets slow on me and lasts 12+ hours, usually.

Myn's new ROM is extremely fast as well, plus it has 4G which means it is potentially 4X as fast as CM6 if you're in a 4G area like me and you use network intensive apps/browsing/downloading a lot. I'm running King's#9 with it as well. I switch between CM6 (for running Ubuntu/network bridging), and Myn's (when I want really fast eye-candy and I need that 300MB file NOW)

Just like everyone else is saying go with CM6 for a non-sense rom. If you want sense then try out Ava's new V9 rom. It's super smooth and has everything working like hdmi, 4g, etc.

I came from CM6 and absolutely love Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo. Super fast and smooth. I might switch back when CM6 gets 4G working (as SF now has 4G). 8.82down and .97 up btw.

Myn's warm, burnt droid from netarchy and fresh from flipz(3.3) have been good for me.
Myn has most eye candy, but still fast.
Fresh works great, as well, fast and stable.
Burnt droid was good as well, all of these run sense

So I'm guessing this is a noob question, but a couple of you mentioned using Snap 7.6 turbo with roms other than cm6...
Umm, how?
I can't seem to make it work (always says "install a snap kernel") with anything else and I can't seem to find directions on how to do so.
I'd like to try Warm twopointtwo with snapturbo - darned if I can make it work.

TwoPointTwo is Sense based so AOSP kernels (snap, king's AOSP) will not work.

Ah, so it's as I suspected - noob question .
My first week with an Android phone (recovering iPhone junkie). So much to learn, so few hours in a day.

VaelPak
I have pockets of 4G coverage near me and I do connect on occasion so CM6 is out of the question for me.
I've been very happy with VaelPak 2.2 and the stock HTC 11 kernel. It has most of sense stripped out but some components are still there if you like. After playing with a few ROMs, I realized that I actually like the HTC dialer, contacts, and MMS apps. For most stuff you get the option of using AOSP or HTC/Sense components, and the developer is very active and very responsive, addressing any issues. Battery life is good, lasting a full day with moderate usage (up to 18 hours), and performance is great considering all the Launcher Pro eye candy.
It's not completely stripped down yielding the best speed, however I think it's a perfect balance between barebones AOSP and stock Sense (with sprint junk).

try superEVO rom its awesome

I don't get why anyone wants to have a 3G only ROM on a 4G capable phone. Furthermore why the heck would anyone make a ROM for a 4G phone that doesn't connect to 4G before releasing. LOL

Review of ROMS -UPDATED 2/3/11

This thread will focus on the current roms, and if theres a new version, it'll be back up on here in a week or less.
I encourage other people to make REVIEW's as well to keep the new users updated on the new roms.
Try to do these reviews on ROMS that haven't had reviews done on them yet.
Note: These are personal opinions.
NOTE: as another person mentioned below, most of these ROMS do support OVER CLOCK kernels, but make sure by asking the devs or other people using the same ROM.
Disclaimer: By voicing my opinions here, i am not saying 1 dev is greater or better than the other, i'm simply stating my personal opinions and personal experiences.
What does a BETA- (ROM NAME) mean? It means that its a quick review, and not a fully detailed, when the beta is removed, it means the rom has been used for atleast a week, which gives me time to examine its uses etc.
Nero v5 (KA5)
Developers: Team Whiskey (TW)
Nero, is said to be the "best rom for the vibrant" by many users, and this reason is because of the reputation Team Whiskey has, their roms are ALWAYS stable, have incredible speed. Nero comes with VOODOO, the latest one available, and currently has KA5, which i'm guessing is because KA5 is currently loved by many people and serves good reception and speeds, where on KA6 and KA7, people compain about speeds, or TW may be working on their official froyo rom right after the source is released by Samsung.
Nero has the beauty, speeds, and anything else you can say.
If you have problems with lag on Nero, trust me it is NOT the rom, it may be that you do not have VOODOO (lagfix) enabled, or that you flashed it in a incorrect way.
Nero is based on unofficial 2.2 till now.
Nero comes with a sleek ginger-bread looking notification bar.
A little problem very few people have is that Team Whiskey is very "un-user-feedback" meaning they don't usually respond to comments, or questions on their threads unless if its absolutely necessary. Maybe because their more busy? I do not know.
Battery life is good, but i've had to recondition everytime. experiences will be differ.
Nero is recommended to everyone and anyone.

AXURA Vibrant Edition 2.2.7.1 [KA5] Beauty
Developer: Master and his website is Devs4Android
Axura is EXTREMELY stable, and i admire this rom VERY much, knowing that Master, alone made this entire ROM. The developer Master is a common community member of XDA, and does answer questions, and replies to comments etc. Axura is also on KA5, and the latest VooDoo, and based off of a 2.2 unofficial ROM. Unlike most 2.2 based ROMS out right now, Axura has a sleek silver-grey theme, which makes it one of the most unique roms out. The best thing about Axura is not the beauty, or the speeds, and not even the stability. It is the Battery, even without a recondition, you will get around 20+ hours of battery life on this ROM, but it will all come into how much or how less you use your phone and how heavy you use it. If your need Battery, Stability, Speed, and Dev-to-User feedback then get this ROM NOW.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bionix-V (Official OTA 2.2)
Developer: Team Whiskey
Bionix is the latest, and greatest ROM out, as of 1/26/11.
This is the rom i've used for a few weeks and can i just say that this is magical. The battery life is EXCELLENT!(make sure to flash at when your at 100% battery for maximum effects, or recondition after flashing) I can easily last over 20 hours with moderate use and no recondition.
The Design of the theme is, as always, Gingerbread. It has a sleek black notification bar, and all the designs are black as well.
The speed of the rom is incredible, and i cannot tell if its voodoo doing this or the rom itself, because when i tested thsi without voodoo. i felt the same effects, it has absolutely no lag.
When you flash the rom, Voodoo is auto-enabled, so if your coming from a non-voodoo rom-enabled, it will take time to reboot.
It runs a KA7 Modem, which is good as any other modem for me.
IF you want the most out of your Vibrant, then THIS ROM IS A MUST TRY.
Br1ck'd's **no bloat** Froyo
Developer: Einherjar
This is a rom that you'd like if you were more of a "STOCK" person.
This rom is TOTAL stock, but with all the crap (bloatware removed)
It has a KA7 modem, which is NOT the official that came with stock, but KA7 is better than KA6 according to many users.
If your a TouchWiz fan, this has most of that, gone, i'm guessing mostly because TouchWiz is un-used or it created more lag.
A thing with this rom is that the LIVE WALLPAPERS are removed my guess is to bog down the lag, but i'm not 100% sure.
The battery usage on this rom is about 15-20 hours on moderate, but it may vary.
This has a STOCK look, meaning the black notification you usually see, is not here.
It has a grey-ish-black-ish notification bar, like any stock.
The GPS on this thing is incredible, i have not messed with any of my hardware, and trust me on some of the best roms out there (no names) my gps wouldn't work... but this rom right after flashing gave me 7 sattelites in less than 5 seconds and got a lock.
This rom has VOODOO backing it up with its speed. This rom comes with an amazing music player "miui music player" which is NOT created by the devs of this rom but it is the stock music player and just looks BEAUTIFUL.
I love the music player so much, i've already stolen the .apk and put it on my other roms
A Problem i've faced during this ROM is that even though its extremely stable, and even runs voodoo, i did experience lag, not a whole lot like the official froyo, but a little bit, enough lag to make me go back to my old rom.
I'm not sure if its just me, or its for everyone.
besides the lag for me, this rom is wonderful, and perfect for anyone looking anywhere close to a STOCK rom.
M - Flagship V4 BETA
Developers: Einherjar
Did you like Flagship V4? yes? well, you'll just think this beta is x5 better.
I don't know how Jellette makes these stable, while speedy roms, but whatever he does, it keeps improving every rom update!
The Battery Life WITHOUT recondition: 16 hours with light-moderate use.
The Battery Life WITH recondition: 20+ hours with light-moderate use.
The notification bar has been... redone.
As usual the notification bar is transparent and takes the place of any app your using, so it does change colors.
the pull-down is now, which i love, a sleek white-ish-grey-ish pulldown.
The icons, have also been re-done! They look beautiful, their kind of "oval" looking and fit with the whole rom.
It comes with an amazing music player, which includes...
Sound Hound music listener/finder, radio, your own playlists etc, and your videos, and youtube videos. It's a whole media package in 1 app.
The DOCK, i love it! The left side is a phone (we'll talk about this in the next sentence ) and the right is a messaging icon, in the middle is a ... hut? looking icon which you press for your app drawer.
The Dialer or phone call app on this Beta, is a transparent one. You can see all the numbers clearly, and you can see your background as well.
The icons on top are grey-white, and while your charging the battery goes green and starts going up.
The Beta comes with the newly found KB1, which has been giving me pretty good reception.
This rom is recommended to everyone, and anyone who has a vibrant.
Thanks xriderx66 very nice and accurate writeup in total agreement with you.
The only thing I would add is the Team-Whiskey have some overclock roms you can play/flash over the stock nero should the user view their phone like a corvette in need of speed modification
Thank you for this write up,im sure everyone will love this.
It takes a very talented and patient person to write up such well done and accurate reviews.
Thanks again for your dedication and time
Team Whiskey makes a variety of other ROMs that may fit that bill more closely than their Nero or Bionix projects.
Why someone would want to flash a nearly stock Android ROM is beyond me.
Just look around in the Development section.
Stable Gingerbread Sense Rom?
Okay I've been reading and reading and reading about all these new leaks and new gingerbread roms, and sense 1.0, sense 2.0 and sense 3.0 and i'm just entirely confused now =)
Is there a stable, Gingerbread Sense rom ?
Like i am rooted, and i have tried tons of roms, but i really like the stock sense rom.
Is there a stock gingerbread rom yet that is as stable as the stock froyo rom i'm running now? or are they all unstable or at least have some sort of issues?
I saw that there's a gingerbread stock rom with sense 1.0 ? what's the difference between sense 1.0 and my stock sense? I also saw that theres an HTC Sensation port with sense 3.0 , is this stable and stock?
I basically just want the exact same thing i have now, except gingerbread instead of froyo.. does this exist?
The leaked ginger rom is perfectly stable just a brightness bug with nova screens other than that perfectly fine
from my phone duh
if you want GB + Sense 1.0, give Fresh 4.0.0.4 a try.
if you want GB + Sense 2.1, i've enjoyed MikG 2.1B1 so far. no wimax yet, but i'm in the middle of nowhere right now, so it's not a big issue.
the GB + Sense 3.0 rom is probably frustrating to use, because last time i looked at it, none of the screensizes/graphics looked right.
is there a real good reason to switch to a GB rom from Fresh Froyo for ex?
Like batter battery life (probably worse from what I've read)? Faster/Smoother? New apps?
I just don't think it's worth the trouble, imo
nothing to do with the rom its the kernel .. so yes the rom is stable
Hey are you sure the battery life is fine because im really not sure that the battery is doing a good job. I feel like the battery life on this rom is eating away faster then it should be. Do you know ways to fix that?
I've used the stock leaked gb with sense 1.0, Mikhail (gb with sense 2.1) beta 2 to rc1, and viruses gingersense b3 and currently b4 alpha 1. Each I've used for at least a day. I also ran cm7 nightly 63 for a bit in there.
If you have a nova screen, run the GPS fix (##gpsclrx#), and use prl 1.77, all of these Tom's are pretty stable. The only reason I left mikG was for video on Google talk which I could not get working on mikg for the life of me. Also I could not get the GPS fix to run on viruses b4, but as long as you run it on another gb sense 2.1 rom first, so my GPS is working fine. No 4g on the sense 2.1 ports. Viruses sense 3.0 port is about to have a beta released, once that is stab it will be the sense rom to end all sense roms as it has 4g working already. With the work virus does it'll be a stable daily driver within a week or two. It will still have the nova screen problem I believe, as I think it uses the leaked Evo gb kernel.
For now I think if you have an Epson screen you can't go wrong with mikg rc1. If you gotta try Google talk with voice step it up to viruses gingersense beta 4. If you need 4g, stick with fresh or calculin's versions of the leaked gb with sense 1.0. Personally though I won't go back to sense 1.0 now that I'm using 2.1 for over a week. Lastly if you have a nova screen, there are some market brightness apps that work (juice defender, among others, has been mentioned) so you could still give it a shot.
With a full wipe I have had no stability issues besides the GPS lock / reboot issue that is fixed by the above. They all run very smooth. I am not an aosp guy no matter how hard I try, but that's another post for another time.
EDIT:
1. virus B4 alpha 1 will not give you working video chat with google talk no matter what you do. his B3 will, after flashing lithid's g-apps package.
2. MikG is a little more complete (has working EPST i.e. ## codes, working sprint voicemail). I am still drawn to Virus B3 due to g-talk video chat, as well as more sense 3.0 elements (messaging, for example).
No problem. One last thing, battery life (ignoring the brightness issue with the nova screen which really kills the battery) is equivalent on this leaked gb kernel, if not a tad better, than with HTC kernel 15 and 17. Battery charging time is significantly faster, though, which is quite nice. The only other people with bad battery life are those who stick with prl 1.90, which causes wakelocks in many many roms.
Happy flashing. Just nandroid and flash, you can always go back.
Oh on B3 (or any of Virus's that incorporate sense 3.x) you will probably want to partition the SD card per the OP. The sense 3.0 files take up a LOT of spce and he has moved some of the system fies and enabled app2sd to free up internal space for apps. In that respect MikG and TMartin are easier since they don't have the sense 3.0 elements and take up less phone memory
You can get the 3.0 lock screen (no widgets) on most GB 2.x roms (there is a thread)
TMartins cleanup of the Evo GB leak is good. I keep a backup of that so I can update PRI and profiles (its a sprint ROM the others are not). Also has 4G if you need or use that.
Most likely you will need to downgrade the PRL as it caused wakelock. Not sure why. I assume is a kernel issue like the screen brightnss that will hopefully get ironed out. Remeber it is a leaked (i.e. not 100% done) kernel we GB people are working off of.
Nadroid and play. Find what your phone likes.
Good luck
Still not sure how people get this to work. Maybe I'm missing something, though. Google Voice doesn't close - it tries to set up, then force closes. My contacts aren't working - the People app opens, only shows me (and any recent calls), and if I try to poke around in it, it force closes. Very frustrating.
Functionality and Stability of an operating system are two very different things, man. You can have an OS that is full of functioning features, but crashes every day. You can have an OS where only 3G works but 4G doesn't, but it can be stable and run for years without a crash. See?
But then again, we're just arguing semantics at this point, so we can just agree to disagree, no ill will meant.
Benefits of CyanogenMod
I was wondering if someone could lay out a few of the benefits of flashing to Cyanogen versus stock (rooted). I have a lot on my phone and just wanted to see if it would be worth the time to switch and get everything setup again.
I looked around and didn't see any nice list of features/benefits that would be gained with Cyanogen.
I do love the fact that it is open source and community supported. That's fantastic.
Hope this isn't flamebait...
Stable (unless you're on a nightly)
Great codec support
Bluetooth profiles (HID being a top add)
It's the latest Android version in all its un-bloated glory
Update frequency is high
I'm sure I'm forgetting other things but its not limited to that.
I'm a Sense fan myself but CyanogenMod is worth the install. You owe it to yourself to check it out.
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/19985-cm7-v-sense-what-you-lose-vs-what-you-gain/
I ran CM7 for about a month and now am running the stock rooted OTA Gingerbread. It may just be ADW launcher but CM 7 is slow and laggy compared to stock gingersense. I like others had major issues with getting GPS stable and working. I do miss some of the mods but over all i'm happier on a sense based rom.
For me battery life. Ive tried every sense rom there is and im yet to find one with better battery life. And for me its not anywhere near slow or laggy. I dont really see myself ever going back to a sense rom, definitely not the one Sprint just pushed out.
Honestly, check it out for yourself. You don't need to lose anything, nandroid backup your current setup and install CM7. You can play around with it for a while and see if it's for you and if not you can just restore your backup. Many people on here have 2 or 3 roms backed up and switch between them. My suggestion would be to read all the links in my sig, they should answer any questions you might have.
i ran it so i could connect my wii remote and play snes9x...there is something sense cant do!!!
netflix, googletalk video chat. way better keyboard. i miss a couple things about sense so i just bought launcher pro and use that for my facebook and agenda widgets. other than that sense roms are garbage to me. CM7 is great and once all the stupid little bugs get worked out it's going to be awesome.
i'd suggest flashing the roms with armon 2.3 recovery and sticking to the stable versions of cm7. i just had to start from scratch cause a nightly a while back through my phone for a loop.
give the latest stable a shot for a week and i bet you really like it.
Aosp. That's why I like it.
* CyanogenMod (advanced) settings. You can tweak it to perform just how you like it.
* Screen on/off animations
* Color rendering (to reduce screen power use)
* Regular updates
* Gingerbread well before sense roms. Even running 2.3.4 like me
* Developments are quickly included (ex: sd card read ahead value to increase read speed)
Just do a backup of your current system, flash cyanogen, play around and if you don't like it, just restore back to your original.
I was on CM7 for the past month and @ first I was in love.
Benefits:
Advanced bluetooth support (Wimote for my emulators)
Full Screen mirroring HDMI (Once again for emulators)
Speed increase (This didn't last long)
On/Off screen animations (Impressed the friends and relatives)
Cool Wallpapers
But, after awhile the bugs really started to get annoying
Negatives (YMMV)
Bugs (From random FC's, gmail stop syncing for no reason, wimax not wanting to stop without a restart plus other annoying stuff.
Speed (Eventually CM7 started to move slowly to a point where it felt like a chore to deal with my phone)
Well, Friday was the last draw when my sister's texts were not showing up on my phone. So, I flashed the new Sprint GB update and I am in love with my phone all over again. Even with the bloatware my phone is running silky smooth and I am experiencing no bugs. Plus for some reason my battery life has improved too. I was using Tiamat with SBC on CM7. Battery life become horrendous on CM7 and yes I did calibrate my battery.
When it's all said and done YMMV. The best way to find out is to NANDROID Backup and flash the rom yourself. You might be greeted to a whole new world of flashing greatness.
Lots of threads out there. I just followed the directions. I think now if you just flash the newest version of gapps and choose Google talk to install it'll install a properly working version. I'd read up on it tho.
Nice that someone actually weighs the pro's and cons as op obviously needed. There is a lot of hating going on here at XDA, All devs should support each other, not bash each other. I know I Haven't been a member on here long, but flashing roms has been a hobby for a while, I just wasn't a full blown flashaholic. Anyway, there are a lot of roms to choose from and though I develop my own, I still flash everyone elses to enjoy the experience, and learn. Everyone has the right to believe what they will, but there is a line between a thought, and posting. If some of these people where two feet away from each other, there wouldn't be all of this garbage talk. I thought XDA was all about exactly that, giving the people a choice as to what software to run, helpful guides and tips, a community, or actually a culture, if you will. Anyway, sorry.....Flash Away....
it's impossible for something to be perfect and without having a single issue. but the rom with the least issues in my opinion would be Virtuous Unity, a great rom developed by the hardworking Virtuous team. that rom is the closest you can get to perfect. try it.
thread is in the mytouch 4g development section.
What is it that you are wanting out of a rom? Different people like different things, and while some like vu (myself included), others want a more vanilla Android experience. Which would point closer to cm.
Depends on your preference. I like sense and the one nearest to perfect for me is Virtuous Unity. Like saranhai said nothing is perfect nothing will be. The stock rom that comes with mytouch is not perfect at all. Some roms have a tad little bit of lag some just a little bit more. Something about every rom is different. Like eqjunkie829 said. You could want sense like me, him and alotof other people. Or you can go with a more aosp/vanilla rom.
I bought this 3 months ago.I like a battery saving Rom.I know there are faster Roms,but current speed (official GB update)doesn't feel bad for me.Also, there is a problem of camera quality of this GB update.
Easy. CM7.
Nothing is more stable and more battery efficient than CM7.
Can't go wrong.
Hmmmm, without a single issue?
I don't think such an animal exists in our modern world...
From my experience, using the stock sense that came with the phone had by far far far more issues than cm6, 7 and 7.1- fc almost every phone conversation followed by signal loss, flaky wifi, lots of problems with the (nice) automatic profile switching etc.
So whatever you install, you're probably going to be "issuewise" much better than stock. Perhaps you'll have to sweat a little more to make it look as neat as sense, though.
MIUI is fast, stupid fast actually, and i'm @ 1 GHz CPU. Super customizable , good for battery save.
Try Cyanogen mod (CM7). Like a few suggested!
All my cam apps work great on the stable version.
Battery life is probably the best of all the ROMs because of its simplicity.
This ROM is all about functionality
Although I use MIUI. Which also has great battery life (1day 6hrs) it has its quirks with some camera apps. I just wanted a sleeker user interface
I use a simple cam app anyways and I love the customization. My main goal for rom was battery life, & speed ( i was on 2.2 and it was very laggy out of the box) I just got my phone 2 months ago.
My last smart phone was an htc fuze lol and my previous phone was a simple nokia bar phone.
So I was totally oblivious to rooting prior to 2 months ago.
cyanogen
well I'm using cyanogen 7 stable version and I don't have any issue
running TDJ 2.2.0 just to switch things up a little bit
10+ hours and just now hitting 50%, so far so good
TDJ's port of that rom works wonders
Virtuous Unity for me, never one single issue, great performance, features, speed, battery life.
Virtuous unity was ok, not perfect by any means. It was a heavy rom, some times leggy and had some random FC's I never got in other roms. For a more stock sense/espresso hybrid (with out the stupid blocky apps), royal glacier has to be the most stable rom I have tried. I am currently running Faux's nexus rom and I love it so far, no issues. So if your into AOSP stuff, I would look into that.
Faux nexus 1.3.1
So I have been using faux's nexus 1.3.1 ROM for about a week now, I calibrated the battery right after I flashed it using the battery calibration app, and the battery life is amazing. It lasted 1 day 5 hours according to my battery stats right after I calibrated. Also it has been one of the most stable ROMs I have used besides royalglacier. No FC's or random reboots. One thing I have learned, which may be a total noob thing but whatever, is if you are going from sense to AOSP, you cannot restore any data after you flash your rom. You have to use titanium backup or the mybackup pro app to get your apps, SMS, call logs and the likes back. It might be common sense but i never knew that and it kept me away from aosp roms for a long time!
ICS Just doesnt cut it.
Ive recently downgraded back to CM7 GB. ICS just has too many bugs and it seems im the only one who seems to think its "slow" or jerky at times. I encourage you if you just want your phone to work and be as fast as it can be to go back to CM7. It seems everyone keeps saying ICS is ultra fast and ultra smooth. In my experiences, ICS just wasnt made for the SGS1, the hardware just isnt powerful enough, heck even the Galaxy Nexus looked a tad slow on ICS compared to how fast it is on JB.
I dont think CM10 will be that much different from CM9. Im looking into getting an S3 when they drop the price a little bit, (£500!!!! I can get a decent laptop for that price)
No comment
I honestly disagree. I do feel Slim ICS is as fast, as any other 2.3 rom i've tried, with the added bonus of slightly improved responsiveness. This is my personal experience, of course.
And i also think it's not about the hardware. If it was, the iphone wouldn't be such a success. But this is a loaded statement and not really worth going over. I'm just glad everyone has a favourite flavour they can use
Ya really think dat ugly'n'slow CM7 is better dan ICS?
There are trillions of possible combinations of apps and settings, did you do a clean install (wipe everything)?
A clean ICS beats a clean 2.3 ROM.
Yeah its definitely useable. but maybe its just me, I feel like sometimes it will run flawless then sometimes it will feel laggy and slow, regarding iOS, its alot better coded than Android (im going to get hate for taht, but its true, you can run obsolete processors with iOS and still get it to work flawlesly since its so closely ccontrolled and optimised) Its the same with Windows Phone 7. If theres anyone who hasnt tried using Wp7, I encourage you to do so, my next phone will hopefully be the SGS3, but with every single Android phone regardless of specs, sometimes theres a delay with some things, i.e. the gallery. Its not so much lag anymore, just a delay between pressing the app icon and it actually loading. On windows phone, you press the app, BOOM, instantly its there.But JellyBean and "project Butter" is a step in the right direction. (And it looks alot cooler)
I got back to gingerbread although I liked the neat GUI of ICS and tested almost every variant of it except Slim ICS because it lacked support for Arabic based languages (my native language is Pashto). Another thing for me was the lack of feature of copying contacts to SIM which is crucial for me. Anyway I'm waiting if someone could include that feature, then certainly I will get back to ICS or JB.
ICS is good but the SGS just doesn't get the most of it, you can say what you want but if you think you're getting the full ICS experience on this phone you are sadly mistaken..
Honestly I don't blame the OP downgrading to GB, the sgs is what 2-3 years old now? If you want to run the latest software it might pay to start thinking about upgrading.
For me,
Slim ICS>Froyo 2.2.1 (especially stock ZSJPK)>Any Gingerbread rom
Why? The answer is ram. The notion of free ram being wasted ram is just silly. When ram is full, the phone has to constantly close and reopen background processes, causing a decrease in smoothness.
That's why Froyo 2.2.1 was the best, because it had the most least ram consumption. However, slim ICS had that ridiculously big ram configuration, which put it on par with 2.2.1. But it ranks higher because it is ICS and has more features.
Hmm i downgraded to froyo a while ago and found it heaps laggier than ICS , JB is much better than ICS imo now.
What a strange thread. I've been on a load of different ICS Roms, I've tried almost all of them and I've found 90% of them faster than stock Gingerbread/Froyo.
Right now I've been on CM10 Alpha (JB) for two days and my SGS feels like a new phone again. It's not perfect and 100% reliable, but it's pretty good for an alpha build.
im sorry. what is gingerbread/froyo? never heard of that.
it depends on personal preference to be honest.
Im not a developer, but the ram being full is not always bad. It just depends on how the Os uses it. I agree if you are constantly clearing and caching the ram as u open apps, you will lose smoothness but, for instance, my version of nix pre caches the majority of ram in advance for various applications to use. In essence insuring there is enough ram available for gui apps. Obviously if you are overall limited on ram though it will slow things down.
I have never felt like the ics ports were sluggish, just bit battery heavy, and they seem to run hot. That being said GB is the best compromise for me. Plus there is so much more hacking done for GB.
