backlight buttons used for notifications on the i9000
i remember seeing this before in the theme and apps section and it got ruled out for the vibrant because of kernel issues i think it was... but they figured it out for the i9000, so i hope we can see this on our phone... soon.
btw... please dont flame and tell me this is in the wrong thread, because it will get more views here... and its in this section of the i9000 thread.
If you build it. they will come
Try this, it works like a charm: http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.led.notify
thanks... ive seen that in the market... but unless theyve changed the battery drain and the using home button to power the phone back up... it doesnt feel like a complete solution. atleast for me...

well the source is there from the i9000 build, sounds like you need to get to work to fit your needs.
oh and it's in the development section in the i9000 section because there is DEVELOPMENT done, unless you plan on doing something this should go in the Q&A section.
flame on!
Who cares if its in the wrong section or not? If everyone posted crap like that then nothing would get done with our phone so take that **** elsewhere. Anyway back to the topic at hand, just reading over the first post it seems as tho the dev who made that is willing to port it to other Galaxy S phones. Anyone try contacting him yet?

ive never heard anyone use that out of context like that before
what a clever clever girl you are
i know how these threads work.
and in case you havent noticed!!!
the i9000 is a GALAXY S,
now look at the back of your phone
it probably says GALAXY S
hmmmm... soo strange how that works.
it isnt my fault that samsung decided to put
out 5 different versions of almost the same
effing phone.
i do my part for the community anyway i can,
and i know as well as anyone else, the q and a
section doesnt get as much attention... so,
hopefully this thread will bring to life some actual
development since this can and should be port-able
id do it myself, but obviously i cant...
which is why i posted.

The i9000 is a variation of the Galaxy S just as the Vibrant, Epic and so on are. Each may be similar but no two are alike, if they were you wouldn't be here requesting someone do something you are too lazy to figure out and learn yourself. And yes it's strange how THAT works.

Do your part by not being one of the members that purposely posts things in the wrong section. If the moderators did not feel the need for separate sections we would have one general forum.
And the reason the Q&A section doesn't get "much" attention is because people like you refuse to post there.. why would someone looks there if you continue to post here?
Change the thread title to include [Think Tank] then he can't complain anymore.

because people like you are on a high horse... you arent a mod.
you arent the xda police. id just like to bring it to an experienced persons attention who could do it faster than it would take me to learn. why? cause i work and have a life that doesnt completely revolve around xda.
so why dont you go flame someone elses thread little lady... as you can see, there are some ppl here that would like to accomplish the same thing id like to see. which is to get more functionality out of my phone, since it is obviously possible on other "similar" models.

Really? Isn't the whole point behind a Think Tank to get people in here and try and get development done? Hmm seems to fit this thread perfectly. So what exactly is the problem now?
Edit: That configurable backlight timeout thread has nothing to do with this topic, It's a separate topic that in no way involves using the backlights as notifications. The other thread isn't a Think Tank so go flame in that one if your that hell bent on being useless to getting this to work on our phones.

sounds like a great idea... i guess im just hoping for an update.zip or apk possibly... like in the other thread... so that we can unlock this feature with ANY rom... but im glad to see people taking proactive steps... ill be sure to mention it on the samsung website...
sorry for the negativity previously in this thread... its just kind of sad to throw a disclaimer up, only to find someone try to tear it down... its unnecessarily negative when the out come of this thread is supposed to be positive.
Ok so no flaming cuz im not saying this phone sucks at all.
I love it and had it running 1.6 along with so many 3d games i bought such as avatar, ganstar, and a few others. Also running launcher pro plus and android phone 7 look
Well i was offered $130 + and HD2 and i thought about but i just couldnt give in. Then i was offered a $100 + HD2 + Samsung gravity Touch. It might have been a good deal then but i just love the phone so much, it was like nooo..
So To end it, it was a 2009 Hp Desktop with Wireless keyboard and mouse + HD2 + SAmsung gravity Touch i think its a good deal anyway. and ill just be selling the hd2 and gravity and getting a vibrant again next week!
any comments?
sounds like you know a very stupid person.

Now post again when you get your vibrant.

Congrats I mean if you can get a free computer out of the deal and buy another Vibrant why not right?
No, you haters, Definately not a moron or stupid. Computer is fairly Fast and has 2gb of ram as well as a 250GB HDD with the 19inch monitor. To get that plus a touch and an HD2 is more than a good Deal. For i am already getting rid of the Gravity touch tomorrow and selling it to a friend for $150 since he was looking for a phone.... I can easily sell the HD2 for about $300 since both phones are 9 out of 10 condition.
$300+$150=$450 - price to get a vibrant. $380-$450..... At the end i got a free pc after all...
BTW: When someone insults or flames others about something they share, i think others just follow along and hate too because they think it makes them cool or something! - Bet you anything to whoever said admin delete this thread it wont happen... Why?? it was posted in general where i can basically share samsung vibrant related chat.
EDIT --- I guess mods are cleaning up ...
Lol! Its funny how none of your posts In xda are of any help, yet come ***** about stuff. Move on. Picking up fights in forums. Oh geezzzz !
Thread cleaned and guess what...I really don't like having to come clean this stuff up. This is in fact the General Section for the Vibrant...which is defined as follows:
"Discussion about the T-Mobile Samsung Vibrant (general chat, tips & tricks, etc)"
If you don't care about this thread DONT POST USELESS COMMENTS and move along... if there is more flaming people will start getting free vacations....now let’s stay on topic and respect each other!

But as the MOD said this forum is General for general chat, tips & tricks, etc, by that ANYTHING that has to do with a Vibrant fits here, including selling one.

Yep, agreed. Even if the OP had traded the Vibrant because he hated it, which he didn't, he said he loved the phone - but even if he traded because he hated what he received in return still stands as a good indicator of the perceived value of the phone by folks who don't own one and want one.
Just last week my cousin offered to trade me 2 iPhone 3G's for my Vibrant. Not a bad deal at all, in terms of overall value.
I dig the Vibrant now that it's rooted and tweaked with a custom ROM, but to be honest if I were able to get 3G speeds with an iPhone running on T-Mobile I most likely would have taken him up on it. As much as I am now liking this phone I'd also be plenty happy with an iPhone as well, not to mention I could have given the second one to my wife and negated the cost of her upcoming upgrade in December. She's a photographer and I'm a designer, we have macs here at home and the iPhone would play well with our setups.
It is what it is man, preferences are preferences. Just because someone wants an iPhone, or doesn't like a Vibrant, that's not some kind of insult. People have their preferences, yet a lot of folks really seem to take the fact some other folks aren;t digging their phone as some sort of personal jab.
OK, end off topic tirade directed at no one in particular.... - what I'm saying is that my cousins offer and the deal the OP just received tells me people want the Samsung GS phones and I have options should I ever want to trade.
Agree 100% with the watcher (not to mention the moderator as well!!) This certainly concerns the Vibrant and fits just fine in general.
Awesome !!!
Nice to know there are still suckers out there and those who will help them prove their mental midgetry
Ok...if you don't like the phone nobody blames you. But would you please explain to all of us why you are posting here. This topic is not going to help nobody in the forum... Hey Thanks to all of you who supported me and backed me up, But honestly the only thing that truly pissed me off was the fact that ive been around xda for quite some time now, being part of all android forums relating to GSM Devices starting from the g1, so i truly know whats right and wrong, and where things go of course....
Over time i have helped a great number of users, specially the mytouch slide by giving them my gmail to gtalk and help with rooting as it wasnt an easy process... and i decide to ONE time write in the general thread and share my story and all of sudden users with a POST count of Under 10 or 20 start Flaming. You are welcome...but this thread has had its fun...it is now closed.
It seems like as the Nexus One gets older and a new phone comes out every week some one is making a "who's switching" whether it be the G2 or the latest WM7 thread. Is it me or is it getting annoying? If you're going to leave the N1 or Android why do you need some one else to share your opinion or validate you leaving? When I bought my N1 in the G1 forums I didn't feel the need to post a thread saying okay everyone lets go!!! I just came to the N1 forum and didn't look back; ill do the same when I switch again. The point is if you're leaving just do it and don't clutter the n1 forum with your goodbye; go do the portion of xda that is dedicated to the next device.

Yeah I would have to agree. I could understand if they were wondering what others opinions were before switching, but alot of the time they have already made up their mind to switch and all they are really doing is trying to talk bad about everyone else's phone and sway others to their way of thinking so they feel better about their choice they already made by cluttering up the forum with threads that have nothing to do with the Nexus One.

Couldn't agree more.
I think this thread deserves a sticky, and all the "who's switching to what" threads buried under it.
Don't care about switching threads here at Nexus! You can post them in XDA General discussion >General section...
maybe a moderator will read this an suggest this to make it an over all rule because this can't be the only thread its happening on. I'm sure the g1 forums are the worst about it, now that everyones contracts are coming due.
+1 for a dedicated swingers thread.
Anyway, its human nature to want to share decisions, commonly referred to as Confirmation bias- google it, makes for an interesting read.
So sick and tired of all the clutter and silly threads. Now that XDA has gotten massive, its about time a lot of these threads should be put together.
Opinions are welcome and definitely needed, but when a genuinely interesting and useful thread is blocked by someone whingeing about how this phone didnt/did this...kind of defeats the purpose.
Its like your ex calling to tell you how good his/her new boy/girlfriend is and how he/shes glad to be rid of all the problems with you...sheesh.
Somebody should make a thread collecting threads by people very guilty of this. I imagine you could trace them back a few phones e.g. a touch diamond user complains endlessly of the their phone, moves to a nexus one and about how its so great, then bags it out and moves to a new phone and so on.... I'd read it . Would be interesting to see how perceptions change.
So you guys get offended if we discuss about leaving the Nexus? Seriously????

I'm switching to decaf, all the "I'm switching to (another phone|Windows Phone 7|iPony)" makes my nerd rage come out.
Hello,
first of all I'm sorry If you have seen a thread like this before but I want to try and take a different approach.
I wanted to buy this phone but I read countless posts reporting they have hairline scratches without even dropping their phone.
There was even one or two that got them even though their phone was in a case!
Also:
http://www.droid-life.com/2012/11/2...-idea-since-the-last-phone-with-a-glass-back/
It kind of really seems to be an issue...
What I wanted to ask did anyone try to deliberately reproduce this? Or can anyone prove that this really happens?
I mean if the phone breaks with regular use without even dropping it it would be one hell of a dealbreaker...
Any rich guy/reviewer wants to run a few benchmarks/games and put it on a cold surface in a room and see what happens?
And please refrain from comparing to iPhone 4/4s I think people have seen enough droptests it would be really interesting to see if this actually happens or not...
1. why would someone try to reproduce it until it's a demo unit given to them by Google which I guess will be a rarity considering they are on back order
2. it happened to my friend and as of now he is waiting for the replacements back to arrive on fleebay
3. you posted in the wrong section

Wow simple to the point. I like it
it wouldnt be a temperature shift from cold to hot, it would be from getting too hot and expanding when the glass was put in too tightly
I hit my Nexus 4 with a hammer and the screen broke. LG better fix it as this is a defect.

Sorry I don't post very often so I'm not so familiar to the sections, if a moderator reads it please move it.
As to your questions maybe you didn't read my post or are simply uninformed. There were already enough Droptests, there are already people who have a defect phone some of them deemed unreparable. Also a lot of people got a review units. Heck there is even a guy on youtube who buys devices with his own money and breaks them in durability tests. If you question why people would do it don't ask me but I reckon someone who would do a droptest or whack their phone with a sledgehammer might be willing to try this.
Sorry for being so dumb to think people who deliberately destroy a phone would maybe be willing to deliberatly get a hairline crack.
Long story short there are plenty of people who could try it out.
meh nvm why are ppl always so offensive...

drop tests are easy to do, recreating something like this won't be easy at all dude and not sure if someone on xda will risk his device like that as the replacement backs are not yet available anywhere. also there is enough proof already that this happens and has happened to a lot of peoplel. so it happens but no one knows why.

It looks like a third of owners from TMO have a scratched screen. This is a big deal. People may want to wait and buy one at the store to make sure it is scratched free.

Definitely. Hopefully though when orders from AT&T/Verizon/Spring/others start coming in we'll be able to get a bigger picture of this whole situation. Maybe it's just a T-Mobile thing... wishful thinking?

Lol
Can any non-TMobile users chime in here? I know all the other major carriers are starting to or have already shipped units out.
i would say this is likely to be skewed results, the people with scratches screens, at least on google+, are prolly more likely to respond to this than ppl without scratched screens. Either way though, 30% on that poll saying scratched screens is a tad disconcerting..

I'd beg to argue the complete opposite - this poll is posted in the general forum, so any S6 Edge owner will come across it. Compared to the g+ poll, where you'd have to search pretty heavily to find it (at least in my case) which would generally imply you have that issue yourself - I don't spend my free time searching the internet for problems with the Flex 2 or Moto x Hopefully when more and more people get their devices we can start to paint a bigger picture about this whole situation.

The poll is critically flawed however.
It presumes those voting actually have an S6 Edge.
The fact anyone can tick yes or no without validating they actually have an S6 Edge makes any result scientifically untenable.
Anything so open to abuse without validation of proof will never be capable of truly being representative, or accurate. In a court of law, your evidence would be inadmissible.
Additionally it assumes that equal amount of people who get good and bad devices would be looking at a thread for pre-scratched screens when history as proved that those people with issues are far more likely to search and find threads than those which do not have issues with their device. It's called the distortion field of truth.
So as interesting as poll results like this are - they sadly will never ever be really indicative of a whole.

You may be right but I find it interesting it has been a steady 70 to 30 ratio since the first 10 votes. I did not expect such a steady result.

I never said these polls are completely accurate and I completely agree with what you're saying. But since there's no easy way to ensure people who are voting actually have the device, I feel like it's better to have some poll going than have nothing at all, because I highly doubt Samsung will have users "take a survey".
And maybe it's just me, but I still seem to have just *a little* faith in humanity - I like to think that people aren't being complete a-holes and ruining the polls just for fun -_-
Sadly one more for the yes choice.
Make sure you guys look at the screen under sunlight. I thought mine was perfectly fine in-store.
My phone, as well as my father's phone, both SM-G925i 64gb one black and one white, purchased in New Zealand, are fine and have no scratches on the screen out of the box.
