[Q] Backing up (and restoring) SMS? - HD2 General

Just seen the thread about a new ROM.
My ROM is the last Offical Jan one and I am interested especially in an updated Radio so want to update.
BUT I have a number of important SMS on the phone that I wish to keep.
How do I back them up, flash to a new ROM, then restore them please?

this has been asked a ridiculous amount of times. search

I really bloody hate when people feel the need to post this - on XDA more than any other forum I frequent.
I searched.
I searched this sub-forum; I searched the new Q&A section.
I read about 20 threads.
I did not get the answer I wanted.
I posted the question.
You don't want to help someone struggling, don't. Why though feel the need to intimidate posters with this?

Microsoft My Phone is what you want.

mainly because I find it hard that with a search in just HD2 General for "backup sms" you couldn't find anything out of the 85 threads that pop up. You hate when people say to search, a lot of people hate it when people ask questions that have been asked/answered a lot.
Here's a hint: don't use the top search where it shows a magnifying glass & a sprocket, right at the very beginning of the list of threads there's an item that says "search this forum". it shows on every forum & every post & is much better.
Here are a list of programs that work:
Jeyo Mobile Companion
SPB Backup
PIMbackup
M$ MyPhone
I personally use Jeyo, though it isn't free. It backs them up to M$ Outlook & you can restore as well.

Thank you both.
As it happens I do also have a wry chuckle when someone posts a question that has been asnwered 3 threads down - but it is the slightly sneery need to dive in and smack a person down who is obviously just after some help from people who have been there and done it and does sometimes get on my wick [as it obviously did yesterday ]

You could also use PIM Backup.

I had a lot of problems with restoration and pimbackup, especially with secure box

Thanks guys
As my calendar is already synced with google, contacts with outlook via activesync and pix etc are on the sd card I have just activated myphone and set it to sync sms only.

Damn SMS and the new Upgrade by O2

Hi,
after asking O2, searching this Forum and trying nearly everything, my nerves are bend to much. So I have to write this thread.
After reading
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=7271&highlight=sms and
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=7057&highlight=sms I tried all of the Software mentioned in those threads except of Sprite (the reason is clear I think).
None of the Tips in there have worked on my XDA II.
The Software for SmartPhones has only shown the email-Folders, the dbExplorer helped me to find my In- and Outbox, exported them but gave me no possibility to import them after the Upgrade, copying the messaging-Folder and put it back after Upgrade didn't work either.
So, how, please Step by Step, how is it possible to save my SMS In- and Outbox and reimport them after an upgrade?
PS: The problem with the dbExplorer was that I've found the right Databases but after the Upgrade they have been renamed. So I deleted the new ones and renamed the old ones. But there was no Mail-Icon for my SMS and it was not possible to read them.
Thanks for every coming Posting, I hope this Thread will clear this (I think) fundamental Questuion ones and for all.
Ian

Flexmail 4

I have just installed Flexmail 4 (2008 edition). I have a few questions related to the software and possible hacking. I am new to using this software and I would appreciate if anyone can guide me. Thank you in advance.
1) I have read in the past that flexmail has to be running to receive emails. I have played around with the software but was unable to receive email when the program was closed. Is it possible to have flexmail closed yet still receive emails?
2) I have read about changing HTC Home email icon and directing it to flexmail rather than Tmail. If this is true does flexmail still have to be running to receive emails?
Sorry if these questions have already been answered. I may have missed or misunderstood the resources provided to me on XDA.
Again thanks in advance.

I was considering posting it under Q&A. However, after my research I thought best to post it in D&A because registry changes may have to be created. In addition, it is possible that another user of flexmail may be inspired to create a similar application.
All in All if mods want to move it they can and I do apologize for posting here if not needed.
Yes, FM has to be running to recieve the emails, for all types of servers. Check WebIS website, they have a list of all the reg values and how to create shortcuts.
And, yes this should have been posted in Q&A.

1. Minimize. You can't exit it, or no, it doesn't work.
2. No idea, but yes, it'd still have to be running.
3. You didn't ask, but Flexmail works rather good. Memory usage is good, battery usage is good, and it's pretty flexible. Only thing I really wish they'd implement is per-mailbox notifications. I really want to know when an email hits a specific mailbox vs "just another email. Someday I guess.

LOL on #3. I emailed WebIS, and their support isn't that great. It sucks! Makes new local folders useless.
For the mem consumption, my old 6800 could barely handle it.

hermes 8525 att win 6.1

before i ask the question i will state long time listener first time caller.... i have searched the hermes page for the answer to my question and all over xda but to no avail... basically i want to set a different ring tone for txt message notification for each individual contact is that possible ? i have searched and found programs but i cant accomplish what i need ... am i missing something
It's definitely possible for calls, but I'm not sure for texts... if you have found programs which have a thread here on xda, I recommend you to ask in that specific thread.
And as this question is not device-specific you should ask it in the Q&A forum .
I've never tried it, but I think MortRing will do this and is free.

text message location

Hi there.
Could someone tell me, where the text messages are located on the Leo?
I want to write an application where i can extract the messages and view it in plain text on my PC. I've googled a lot, found some programs that backup messages or sync it with outlook, but no one does that what i want. So i decided to write it by myself. I hope that someone can help me find the text messages on the Leo.

They're stored in a database mate.
I don't know what programming language you're using but this helped me...
http://www.codeproject.com/KB/mobile/PocketPCandSmartphone.aspx
Also, you'll usually get more luck asking things like this in the dev section...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=523
Hope this helps
Thanks for the fast answer, now i can give it a try.
Sorry, but i'm just not long enough in this forum to know all the sections.

You're welcome mate, and I wasn't moaning about you posting in the wrong section. I just think you'll get a better audience for that kind of question in a dev forum.
Good luck with your app

Rooting the pone will allow you to remove all of the bloatware, but if you don't know what you are doing you may brick the phone. I would suggest going into application manager in settings and disabling the bloatware.
Root just gives you full permissions on the files on the phone and lets you administrate the entire phone as if you were the root user on a linux system.

The best advice I can give you is to take a little time and use the "search" function of the forum to learn as much about your phone as possible. All of the questions you asked have been discussed (some several times) in detail and answered when an answer is available. Always check to see if an issue has been discussed or a question has been asked before posting it again. You will learn a lot more about your phone this way. Asking a question like, "What will ROOTING a phone benefit?" tells me that you have a lot of learning to do before you do anything to your phone. Or, you will run the risk of a brick and be right back here with a new post entitled, "Guys, Help, I bricked my phone (insert crying emoticon)..." Trust me, nobody wants that. So read and read some more...good luck.

This phone has issues with certain routers, unfortunately, there does not seem to be a fix yet. You can try to mess with your router's configuration or you can get another router. I can't remember where I've seen the latest info about this but I know it is in a couple of threads already. For bloatware removal, I recommend rooting and then getting Titanium backup from the market (worth the cost) and then use it to "freeze" the bloatware instead of removing it. There are a few lists floating around of safe to remove apps, but I just freeze them to be on the safe side. Another option is the "P" ROM in the development section. In that thread the OP makes available a "bloat removal" tool. Just make sure you read the entire thread and understand what you are doing. Good luck.
