So as I understand it Odin pretty much copy the entire img of the OS whereas OTA only patch a particular part of the System? Or is it more complicated than that

An OTA can be just patches, or it can be an entire new firmware. Now, insofar as the recent JI6 OTA is concerned, that one is an entire new firmware. So in that particular releases context, the biggest difference (more or less) is you can ODIN now, or wait your turn for OTA.

You use ODIN to revert to stock using ODIN the froyo odin files will probably get upped right after the update starts pushing. If your used to a custom rom I'd just wait a few hours after the release and devs will have custom roms based off of it
Thank you. Do I still do a complete odin wipe with custom a 2.2 rom?

Its normally good practice

Totally agree. Once Froyo released the ROM will start coming in. Right now the guys in here are knid enough to make 3 or 4 2.1 ROMs for their own (and our) enjoyment. But as soon as 2.2 releases ROM dev for this phone will get a bigger push.
sleepy8594 , just wait about 60 days or so and you should be pleased with your options.
Appreciated, thank you for the help.

Okay, one question along those same lines.
I'm rooted but using a stock rom. Do I accept the OTA update or do I wait?
Personally I would wait *in case* out root exploit is closed.

It would probably take more than just a few hours since Android 2.2 is based off a newer kernel version.

A newer kernel that we already have source for.

i would prolly reflash my stock rooted (but can unroot) rom i nandroided
Firstly, very sorry that this probably a stupid noob question. I DID read and search around, but the information I found was either unclear or contradicted other findings.
I rooted via the "All in one" script and then installed the Heroic ROM.
So here is my question: when Froyo is officially released, what exactly will have to be done to install it (and is there any easy process for it)?
Thanks in advance for curing me of my ignorance on this matter.
Wait till devs implement it. If you want to have froyo right away flash back to stock and let it update (once released).

Well you will have a few options
1. Probably OTA (Over the Air) from carrier option, but roll out may be spotty. Eg localized to areas from bandwidth. Last OTA was distributed over a weeks time. You will 99% chance lose root with it and will have to wait for an exploit to be found.
2. It will probably be here @ XDA in some flash-able format. EG. thru clockwork mod or Odin. It may even include a kernel thats rooted.
3. Im sure there will be a flury of custom dev roms based around Froyo and may arrive before the carrier version rolls out.
so if i back up my apps via titanium backup will my backups work on a 2.2 rom?
the beta froyo is out if you wanna test it out.

Droid2 Global, rooted stock rom. I'm worried about OTA updates. I want to block them (I already received one, which required me to re-root). I'm worried that future updates will disable the method used to root.
I presume that the available roms have OTA disabled? Unfortunately switching roms isn't an option for me right now.
Rename /etc/security/otacerts.zip to otacerts.zip.bak and the OTA update will fail to validate and therefore not load.
I could have taken the update and rerooted almost as fast as I took you to type your post. Why is simply rerooting such an affront to so many people? Don't seem like much of a big deal to me.

His concern was losing the ability to reroot if moto chose to mess with the D2G's rooting method. I don't really see them going to those lengths but that was his concern not simply not wanting to reroot.

It sounded to me like the same thing everbody was worried about with the d2 OTA updates.

So is it best to allow the OTA updates and then just root again, or to stop them from happening? I read somewhere that renaming the otacerts.zip file is not a good idea and can reduce battery life. Are there any other ways to prevent OTA updates with the stock ROM? If you get an OTA update, will it cause any problems or does it just unroot the phone? Thanks.
All,
Given that AT&T has made this update to 1.8.3 about as confusing as humanly possible I was curious whether we yet had any confirmation on whether the 1.8.3 SBF files that are floating around the forums (ending in "_Service1FF" rather than the usual "_1FF") are in fact bit-for-bit or otherwise identical to what is going out OTA.
Fundamentally I suppose my question is whether the SBF that users have been using to date is a beta or a final (despite it being signed).
Yeah I want to know that too. I noticed that on the update message from att is saying that the update is somethin like 26 MB. And the sbf is 1.4 gb.

Update is just that......an update. SBF is full system flash. OTA update is released to public today and is final.
BTW, AT&T never made anything confusing. All they did was release the update. The community started all the other files flying around.

1.4GB files is the full sbf of Atrix.
update.zip or OTA update is about 29MB. just contain update file.
wouldn't applying update.zip over the already 'updated through sbf' devices solve the issue?
I'm a bit confused by all the 'stuff' that can be installed and downloaded. I don't want to root or change ROMs, I just want to change to 2.3.4 from 2.3.3 as according to some, that's enough to improve battery life. So what's the simplest way for dummies like me to do it? What else do I need to install to do it, apart from the i9100XXKG1.zip ? Risk of bricking phone? Need to backup settings, apps, etc? Reverting to 2.3.3 easy?
As far as im aware unless samsung update their stock firmware you will need to root your device and choose one of the custom roms that include the version your wanting.

Just flash the 3 files in the zip, using odin, and then do nothing else.
Find the 2.3.3 (same 3 files) flash them, and your back.

Harolds is right. You just unzip the 2.3.4 firmware and flash the three files. You do not need to be rooted to flash firmware using Odin
Thanks guys. Is there any risk I can brick the phone before I go ahead? Do I install odin to my PC and flash from the PC to the phone whilst the phone is connected?
If its that easy i may be tempted, will this fix the echo issue that is problematic? Plus is it a warranty breaker?

It's a good point. It could break the warranty or even brick the phone. I'm wondering how far away the official version is. If it's just a matter of weeks, I'd feel safer holding fire, knowing that I'd (presumably?) be covered in the event of something going wrong.

If one flashes the 3 files, then the ROM will be updated to KG1, isn't it? Say, if I have KE7 and flashes the 3 files then I go to KG1? If I just want to upgrade to the 2.3.4 kernel, shouldn 't I only flash the zImage file from the tar archive?

Well I wouldn't say it couldn't brick the phone and its quite easy to flash back to stock to keep the warrnty if needed. Bricking is rare but as I said I couldn't guarantee it wouldn't happen. Normally worse case is soft brick and you can get into download mode again with the power-volume down and menu button - or by using a jig. Even though its not official firmware, it shouldn't up your custom rom count, at least it didn't on mine. But go with what you are comfortable with.

Thanks for the info. So it's pretty safe to do this in the knowledge that the warranty is ok by virtue of being able to return to stock rom, and a soft brick can be fixed. I presume there's also a more serious 'hard' brick, does that mean the phone becomes utterly useless and can't be fixed?
If I go ahead with this now, I can easily re download my apps as I believe they get wiped. But what about SMS messages, email settings, call logs, accounts and other general settings on the phone, do they get wiped?
