Guys,
I'm looking into getting an Android (HTC Desire looks like the best Android machine but oh would love to be able to get hold of the Evo or similar).
A couple of grey areas I need to sort out are:-
1. Rich Text Format read & write.
2. Finance software.
Reference the Finance software, can anyone point me to having a read on what would be considered a suitable application that can allow me to use the finance program similar to how Cash Organizer on Windows Mobile works.
i.e. Have an index of Accounts, Register, Projects, Planner, Budget, Reports.
Accounts would list all the accounts.
Register would list all transactions within a particular account.
Projects ~ as it says.
Planner would list all future transactions so you can see at a glance what is coming out and what account it is going to.
Budget ~ as it says.
Reports ~ as it says.
My Brother who has a Desire tried briefly MyMoney but he told me it's not powerful enough.... however, I'd like to hear more on this from other users.
These two items are at the moment stopping me changing from Windows Mobile to Android.
If anyone can help it would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Anyone have any ideas??
Hi Beards
Currently I'm using Financisto. It has everything you mentioned except the planner part, which I miss too. But it links your money operations to location and you can see reports based on location. Check it out and tell me what you think. If you'll find a better app please let me know.

Many thanks Mantas for your contribution.
You mention there is no planner with this software. Unfortunately, this is one of the most important factors, as I need to be able to add all my monthly repeated outgoings so that the finance program will look at them on the specific date and automatically add the item to a named account.
At present all my testing has to be carried out on my Brother's Desire as I am still in the deciding factor on whether or not to ditch my Windows Mobile HD2 and move on up to Android.
Have you tried MyMoney or any other application.
I will however ask him to install Financisto and get him to show me what it can and can not achieve.
Thanks again.
Beards.
have you tried firewallet I installed it last night but not played with it yet.

I'de be interested to hear your comments ~ especially if it does what I am trying to replicate from Cash Organizer.
Does it offer a 'Planner' so you can plan your spending's in advance and see from a Tab what date a transaction would be due to be added?

I've set mine up to include all my direct debits for the month and they are set to occur every month on the same date, if thats what your after.
There is a 30 day trial of it on the market place, search for Firewallet.

Yes, a direct debit planner is ideal.
I'll get my brother to download and test it out for me.
Thanks.
also check out easymoney. that's what I'm currently using after trying out several other options. I'm probably not as much of a power user as you, but I think easymoney can do what you want.
best of luck, and if you do find something perfect I'd like to hear your thoughts.

When I switched from WM to Android this was also one of my constraints.
Used to work with SPB Finance for years. It never really updated but did a very good job (planner included).
I have now found a good replacement in ClearCheckbook.com.
Is actually better as they also have a website account which syncs nicely with the Desire.
If by planner you mean repeating transactions then yes it is available.
Also have a good customer service .... quick at replying
Only downside is you need to pay for a subscription ....

Many thanks for the additional Apps to try.
My Brother is popping round tonight with his Desire in order I can try out a few of these titles.
I'll certainly post back which I found most comfortable in using.
Well, thanks once again Guys for all your input.... It has been most welcome and truly appreciated.
I've 'briefly' tried all the Apps you can install and can see both positives & negatives on all but admit these are based solely on my own personal requirements as one App may well suit one user very well whereas with another user it limits the usefulness.
Financisto ~ I found limiting to my requirements.
I was surprised there is no recurring payments or split transaction to name but two.
It was easy to navigate and in no time I was up and running with several accounts.
Location was different and useful. Definitely see a use for this.
Firewallet ~ I found the Bill Reminder (Planner) but it was limiting in the choices given.
Again I could not see any way to split a transaction and worse I could not find a category list.... Please update me if I got that wrong as again I only managed to test it out briefly.
EasyMoney ~ was by far the most professional App, both in it's design and operation of use.
There is so much you can play with this App and love.
Granted I personally would like more control over say individual category expense lists (ability to see at a glance how much each category has spent over a period of time) but of the three I tried EasyMoney held me captive longer.
With more time it could well be my choice... Next step is to purchase an Android and investigate it further myself.
ClearCheckbook.com ~ being an online accounts manager looks promising purely for the fact I can manage the accounts either on the Laptop or on the Android.
I did not get a chance to try this out; namely due to the fact I first need to create an account with ClearCheckbook and then see exactly what is transferred to the Android device.
It is one which I will investigate after I purchase my Android Phone so again my thanks Sjengie in bringing it to my attention.
Once again thank you all.
Without your input I would not have covered the ground I wish to undertake prior to my Phone purchase.
Cheers for the quick review. I'm after a finance app so I'll give some of these a try.
hi beards et al
I'm very much in the same boat as you & it is great to see I'm not the only one in this dilemma.
I will try easymoney again as I did not find it to be that good when I first looked into this a few months back.
I installed firewallet & got a quick response to a query from the developer re importing data so will try playing a bit more with that. (he advised me to create the accounts I want with a zero initial balance and then import transactions for each account one at a time. will definitely make living year to date transactions easier although I guess I'll have to add in all the categories too).
if you guys could share your methods of migrating your data across into yr new apps & any other tips & tricks that would be great!
also if there are enough of us cdnt we try lobbying a developer to tweak their app to our requirements or even get a WinMo dev to release an Android version of their app?
regards
Ansi

I'm also a SPB finance user on WM and I haven't found anything yet that does nearly such a good job for me on Android, (I've tried all those listed here and more) But another one to try is "Loot" it is free, there is a "pro" bolt on that costs money and adds a few extra features, for me it is one of the closest to SPB finance but still not close enough!
I'm currently still using my Touch Diamond 2 winmo phone for finance tracking (you'd be astounded how long the battery lasts if you leave it permanently in flight mode btw!)

Thanks... I'll mention this one to my Brother.
I know what you mean in not finding that perfect title.
Maybe it's because we are so much used to the WM application that we can only see what that particular title can give us.
I've loved using Cash Organizer for many years and I know no matter which Android application I find and use it's not going to give me the same as CO.
Having said this, I am sure there will be areas in Android where I did not realize I needed which I'll find and love.
As such I'm going to go in openly and receptive, to look only for the good in the program.
If I can't find the good then there's no point in afterward searching for the bad....
Now I need to focus my attention on getting my Android phone.
It's going to be difficult as my HD2 has for the past 6 months (or so) given me great service and I've been happy with the WM software.
But as we know, it's no point staying with a 'safe' product, you have to look outside the box to better your aims.
HTC Desire or Samsung i9000 Galaxy S
Don't you just love technology.
I don't know anything about this software, I just read a blog post about it...
http://www.mint.com/
Apparently its something from the iPhone that has just been brought to Android.
EDIT: Hmm...just been reading through and everything seems to be in dollars and how it "connects securely to nearly all US banking financial institutions". Could just be an American app.
EDIT 2: Just found this...
Does Mint.com support international banks?
Not yet. Currently Mint only supports US-based financial institutions. We hope to support financial institutions based outside of the US in the future.
Shame, looks pretty good.

Well I took the plunge and 'Pre-Ordered' my first Android.
After a lot of deliberation I altered my choice in getting the Desire to now opt for the soon to be released Samsung GT-i9000 Galaxy S.
The problem is I will have to wait until the end of the month when shipment is expected.
So, to all who participated I won't be able to make any follow-up on the software titles until after this date, sorry.

I have hosting I paid 3 years for that I don't really use. My film editing company died off with the economy.
So, ill put it to good use.
There is a metric ton of GSM development for the tab, and currently no up to date development for the cdma tab.
Ill provide an FTP account for hosting of your projects for cdma, give you your own directory, etc if you can.......
Provide roms for the Verizon tab that...
Offer working camera and camcorder.
Working GPS
Bloat free
Touchwiz free
Gingerbread for the cdma tabs
Kernals, etc.
Also provide development for the sprint tab as well. Even though I don't own one, I'm not gonna hate.
Wifi dev also included.
I may have access to the files, however, I would NEVER release, leak, share, or otherwise cripple any devs work hosted on my server.
This offer extends to newbs, and experianced devs as well.
I will not throttle any bandwidth. I'm hosted through fatcow, I'm sure they would let me know if **** got out of hand.
Oh, yeah ill host leaks, I've had a few C&D's in my day, I know how to handle them.
I don't have extra money I can spare for donating, so I'm going to donate with the means I am capable of. I hope this is something that would help. I hate using those stupid download services like mediashare/etc, to slow, makes me wait, to many ads, etc. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I've got several older Android phones that I've retired from use and are now collecting dust in my closet.
I'd like to use these units as something other than a cell phone (or a paper weight). I'd like to disable the cellular network component and use the phone either as a music player, or as a satellite enabled GPS receiver.
Are there any custom ROMs for this? While I can get these devices functioning as described above, however whenever they are rebooted I get the "new phone" messages looking for service providers, or complaining that the device is missing the SIMM card.
Thanks in advance for relevant information. Don't flame me TOO badly if I'm being tragically unhip and noobish w/this request.
Idk if its much help but I use my old Droid x for a camera and games. I got past the activation screen by pressing the 4 corners on the screen around the android guy. If I'm not explaining it well you can find it on Google by searching for something like using Android phone without activating.

I would think it's possible, but it will depend entirely on the device and its support within the community. Search the forum for your device(s) and determine if it can be "rooted" first. Most can, although what you can do beyond that will often depend on how popular the device was. The device forum will have advice on what to do to get the functionality you want.
Good luck!
Why not stick a large memory card inside and use it for torrents?

Ideally I was planning on using the audio player in my car, something that would boot up into the standard phone desktop and skip the "Where's my SIMM card? Where's my carrier??" device panic.
Same for the GPS unit.

Repurpose old android
A couple of ideas that I like are using the phone as a bit-torrent device, or maybe as a pirate box. But one idea I like a lot and would love to hear something from the developers is about a device on Kickstarter called Twine (I can't post links yet so you will have to look it up), how hard would it be to use old android devices in this same fashion?
I went through the same thought process for my old HTC Hero. Currently, I have CM7.2 installed on it (because it runs smoother and has plenty of options to potentially reduce unneeded battery use) and I keep it clean and in airplane mode. Even that alone allows me to get some pretty good battery life on it to go towards being used as a music player and as a backup device for geocaching.
That in mind, I'd say finding the most barebones ROM will do the trick for you. Or find the newest fully developed version of CM for each device and use that.
you could try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2644588
Follow the link I posted, you would be surprised how much you have to disable/freeze before it stops complaining.
Some processes you can not disable unless you are rooted.

Really liked your tutorial video! Thank you!
Do you have to resurrect this thread from 2012?
Just wondering if there were any other developers willing to work on the A7 or (more preferably) the A7+. Dexter seems to have quit or lost interest his development permanently on either devices (I think he doesn't have a physical device to work with anymore, but I don't remember where I heard this). The last time he logged on to Tablet Roms was on "04-27-2012", and the last time he logged on to XDA was, well, today actually but he doesn't seem to have any interest in the eLocity forum section. He DID leave us with quite a lot of quality ROMs to work with, especially since the kernel was released for the + in March.
If there aren't any developers willing to work with the A7/A7+ because they don't have a physical device, I would willingly offer remote testing on my A7+ (AKA they give me the compiled ROM(s) or whatever and I try it out and give feedback). It just seems like such a shame to leave both devices with nothing better than a buggy (but still awesome) Honeycomb or a working stock 2.2. ICS seems like it would be doable, again especially since the kernel was released.
I will try to contact the user "chinabull" in the referred link as he seemed like he knew what he was doing when he said "It seems to have all the driver source code we need."
And I have also posted this over at TR.
EDIT- Turns out I can't send PM's to chinabull here, forgot about that. I'll find some other means of communication.
EDIT2- I'm crazy- the message got through; chinabull messaged back! And... he said that he already returned his A7+. So we've got no leads there.
If anyone knows some devs who haven't even heard of the A7/A7+ but might be willing to pick up where Dexter left off, please contact them or let me know so that I can contact them.

I would be willing to pony up CDN $20 towards the purchase of one for a talented (and dedicated) dev to work with. Here in Canada they are available as refurbs for about $90 from places like factorydirect dot c a ..
Anyone else want to donate some dinero ?
Cheers
Sorry for the late(ish) reply, I was out of town.
I don't have any money to donate, sadly, as I just spent it on the A7+...
But, like I said in the OP, if you are willing to work from afar we could do that.
It's a shame it's dead. Prices are around $90 in the US too. With all the china pads out there getting 2nd tier dual core processors with 600 res screens for very little more, it's easy to see why this would go by the wayside. One plus would be built in bluetooth which no china pad has at anything close to this pricepoint, and it probably has a better battery than many of them as well.
We've got someone over at Tablet Roms who will be working on the A7+! He is just waiting on the tablet to arrive.

I'd donate if you're talking about developing for the (older) A7. I still use mine and it would be nice to see a fresh rom for it.
I'd be in if I didn't just pick up the ZTE Optik from Sprint. Can't beat free and can't beat running JB via CM10. That 800 res is quite nice.
I'd greatly appreciate someone picking up work on the A7+. I still haven't flashed the newer firmware with the blank screen from sleep fix because I was holding out hope for a new custom rom. I'd have to root and install the outdated gapps again... And I'm sure we don't have unreasonably high expectations. I'd just like a rom without those awful elocity apps, doesn't black screen when I wake it, with google play, and with functioning hardware, anything more is welcome but uneccessary.

Maybe, I don't know. You'd have to ask him yourself - http://www.tabletroms.com/forums/members/jam4.html
"I am about 2 weeks out from releasing a working Honeycomb build for the A7+. Let me know how many of you are interested, either by pm or an email to [email protected]"
Everyone go PM or Email him!
So...2 weeks out? How'd that go?
Btw, the A7+ is at 1saleaday again for $70 this time. I'm willing to buy one and ship it to a developer if that's a hurdle since I'm pretty sure there are enough people out there that would want a solid Honeycomb or even Gingerbread firmware. I don't have the time/obsession to figure out the coding myself.
Going to grab a like new in box one for $50.
I'll want to work some magic with it.
Suggestions, tips and tricks would be appreciated.

Make sure you Check the ESN first.
Kit Kat is on its way, check the Epic 4G Android Development sub-forum.
I would go ahead and install the latest CyanogenMod v10.1.3.1 (stable) its been working well for me, but some folks have complained about Bluetooth issues. I think there is a workaround I could dig up if thats a problem for you. I'll probably stick to stable releases for my daily driver Epic 4G.
After installing CyanogenMod I would install (in no particular order):
- Temporary FC09 ROM for Activation, PRL, Profile, Calibratio, etc.
- Google Keyboard (free Swype-like keyboard).
- Roam Control (not free but worth it, to force roaming on Verizon 800Mhz where Sprint coverage is poor).
- Visual Voice Mail vT.5.3.4.18 has been working fine for me with CM v10.1. Its around here somewhere.
Regarding service providers, I recommend Ting for low data/WiFi users. PM me if you want $25 credit.
And as for root method and recovery?

- If your USB-Computer connectivity works: Directions on how to install CyanogenMod
- If your USB-Computer connectivity doesn't work: My How To
Do not jump around trying different methods. Choose one and go through with it from beginning to end. If you have an issue then restore your backup and/or reset your phone to factory defaults and start over from the beginning and stick to the exact methods described.
I wouldn't bother with TWRP, it isn't necessary. The latest stable CyanogenMod installs the supported ClockworkMod for this phone. I would just stick to that. Another reason is this phone is losing users/developer support sooner than later. Yes we will get Kit Kat, but after that who knows. And what other Kit Kat based ROMs would be worthy/supported? Maybe one other? So you're not going to be trying a bunch of ROMs, one or two at most and you'll stick to the one you like.
You'll need to do the following before you install CyanogenMod or after installing CyanogenMod perform them using the multiboot temporary FC09 ROM. You only need to do the "connectbot" (I don't know what that is) if you don't know your MSL. A phone this old, your provider should be able to provide the MSL.
This post: Want Better 4G Signal? will tell you how to improve your data rate and adjust the 4G signal settings. You can't access these functions via the CyanogenMod dialer. It gives an error after entering the MSL.
See the main thread for any questions.
I'm a big fan of cm 9 stable and I chose the shadow kernel.
As far as answering your questions on rooting and recovering; Qbking77 on youtube has a fantastic collection of video tutorials all about the Epic 4G and how to recover if something goes bad. I used these guides just last week to root someone else's Epic and they're now enjoying root cm9 without to much issue.

I've purchased three of these devises over the years because the Epic truly is epic.
Now as to what you can do with the epic... if your on Sprint's network you can run a web server using LilDebi to boot Linux alongside Android; there's a ton more you can do with Linux on Android in general and you can find more on that in the link in my signature bellow. Also the Epic supports almost every Emulator I've tried: ~
Nintendo; NES, SNES, N64,
GameBoy; GB, GBC, GBA
Sega: Genesis
I've yet to try; Game Cube, Wii, PSP, and Sega Saturn.
~ so if running a PC in your pocket isn't your thing the Epic does well in gaming; there's even a gamepad that you can buy to put on top of the Epic's physical keyboard so things feel a bit more natural. If those don't do it for ya there's always USB on the go (or host mode) plug just about anything into your phone's USB, mice, keyboards, other phones just don't be plugging into strangers phones....
The WiFi is antenna in the Epic is compatible with dsploit and other pentesting apps; so if you're a prankster your Epic can be used to hack into a buddies not so secure wifi and re-direct all their web traffic to youtube cat videos or whatever will get them smashing their screen
With the hotspot on the Epic you can share files to other devices connected to the hotspot, also those devices can share amongst themselves using your Epic's hotspot. I've used this to stream local video files stored on my tablet to the Wii plugged into my TV, it's kinda like pormans Chromcast but I've yet to figure out how to share a stream from youtube to the Wii this way so it's not a full replacement for Chromecast, yet.
I'll add links at a later time if you can't find something I've made reference to.

Just wanted to chime in and say thanks to all of you for your input on this phone. I am very tech savvy and had a Galaxy Nexus that was in a pretty unfortunate accident and rendered it useless, and I happened to have an old Sprint E4G laying around that belonged to one of my friends so I took it to the store and had it activated at no charge to my number. It beats paying out insurance for a replacement for the time being. After a few days of following your threads and watching youtube videos I managed to install CWM through odin and flash CM10.1 stable without ever rooting once XD. Everything is working fantastic so far and I've really happy having semi current software on my no so current phone lol.
Thanks again everyone.
