[RECOVERY] ClockworkMod Recovery for Captivate (FINAL! SAFE!)

First things first, if you flashed a previous version of Clockwork Recovery using Odin, FLASH BACK TO A STOCK KERNEL using this Odin package:

This recovery is *very* safe to use. It does NOT flash your kernel; it is a completely uninvasive recovery method.
How it works: The recovery is packaged as an update.zip that you run from STOCK recovery. The update.zip unpacks Clockwork Recovery onto the ramdisk and restarts recovery. When you reboot, it reverts back to the original, unmodified, stock recovery. So, you will need to keep the recovery on the root of your SD card as an update.zip, and apply the zip every time you want to start Clockwork.
HOWEVER, if you use ROM Manager, all of the recovery installation and management instructions are done for you!
Installation instructions:
Download ROM Manager from the Market.
Flash Recovery.
Choose Captivate as your phone.
Accept the Superuser prompt.
Use ROM Manager to create a Backup.
On the very FIRST boot of Clockwork, you may need to manually select "reinstall packages" if Clockwork does not start. You should only ever have to do this once. It will be automatic from then on.
Watch the backup go!
That's it! This is completely painless and safe! There is no need for Odin anymore to replace the recovery or flash updates!

For us Noobs, can we get more information on where and when to use this?
In reading everything I get some of it, but not all. This is my first hackable android phone, so I am still learning the lingo.
With other phones, I would just Flash a custom ROM or Flash Factory ROM back.
So how do ROM Manager and Clockwork recovery come into play?
Are there any tutorials - not that just give step by step (like above) but explain what is happening in each step or why?

The long and short of it is that you can now flash ROMs and make backups, and restore, without your computer.
The recovery is the tool that lets you do the backups and installations. ROM Manager is a convenient Android front end to the recovery.

After these steps you won't really have to "hack" your phone lol. Root your phone and download Rom Manager from the Android market...then have it flash a recovery (the first selection at the top) choose your device when prompted. Now after that finishes select "reboot into recovery" and as the above post states you may need to select "reinstall packages" (I did). Once that goes through, you'll see your new custom recovery menu. DO A NANDROID BACKUP of your current Rom as soon as you can....then (as long as your current rom isn't messed up, if its stock your fine) from there on out you can play as much as you want with very little risk of bricking your phone. There are others who can explain it better but your stuck with me till they chime in lol. Its a very easy process and nearly foolproof.

Didn't work at first for me.
I installed Rom Manager (premium)
Installed CW recovery
Accepted SU
Tried to backup from within Rom Manager
I got a "Can't find update.zip" message.
When I rebooted and opened Rom Manager again, I got the "Error Occured" message, but it locked up on me and became unresponsive.
I uninstalled Rom Manager, rebooted, then reinstalled. I flashed CW recovery again, rebooted normally, opened rom manager again, and flashed CW recovery again.
After that I was able to use rom manager to reboot into recovery and backup.
Not sure if mine was just a fluke or what, but I figured I would share.

Titanium Backup did that to me also the first time I ran it....I've had quite a few freezes and slowdowns when opening a program for the first time and waiting for SU to kick in.

It should also be noted that when you chose to partition the sdcard via the recovery menu, it partitions the internal sdcard and not the external.
Maybe that can be made an option? I would like to do my nandroid backup to my external card so I have it for safe keeping.
Everything else working as expected, I enabled advanced options and downloaded the superuser package (from Extras) just to test things. Havent experienced any problems other than the sdcard wipe (which wasnt totally unexpected).
If something should happen to your phone (brick, unrecoverable error, etc), how can we reboot into this custom recovery to reflash the nandroid backup? Can we get into it via adb (adb reboot recovery)?

Yeah, having an external SD Nandroid would be a great option. Not just for safekeeping, but for easy transfer in case of hardware loss or replacement.

I just did a reboot into recovery mode (the normal way, not with rom manager) and I had to click "reinstall packages" to get into the ClockworkMod recovery menu. So I'm not sure but I'm guessing (hoping) that its still available if we run into problems later.

Yep. It's pretty much how the Droid and N1 people are used to doing it anyway.
Clockwork is hella handy to manage and switch between working ROMs on the fly, as well as triggering recovery mode without keypress acrobatics, but having update.zip on the SD card to fall back on using the normal restore and the stock kernel is great in case of semi-bricking, and as this last week has shown us, the Galaxy phones are a bit prone to this.

I previously rooted my phone and uninstalled alll the AT&T bloatware, My question is about the backup I just made using this. If I restore the backup will it restore a rooted backup with out all the AT&T bloatware? Also when I ran the backup I go 2 messages at the end

Also I now have 2 ROM Manager icon in my application screens. 1 will open the program and the other tells me that the aplication is not installed on my phone. I tried to delete that icon but it won't go away, Any ideas? FIXED..I rebooted my phone and the extra icon went away...

I do have one in my phone but there is nothing installed on it yet..maybe that's why..

How do I get clockwork 2.5.1.2 back when I'm already in ext4? (solved)

So I have been on ext4 for a few days using quantum 2.5. Everything was working as expected there with clockworkmod 2.5.1.0 and 2.5.1.2 installed and available. This morning, I tried flashing the new midnight rom, but my file was corrupted so I went back to Mammon's Bonsai4All 1.0.4 with an ext4 kernel. Now, I can't get back into cwm 2.5.1.2. Bonsai4All should have a working recovery redirect, so I'm guessing I need to reinstall 2.5.1.2. The problem is, I can't flash the prepare.zip to ext4 with 2.5.1.0. So the question is, what do I need to push to the phone to get the modded recovery back? I have the prepare.zip and all other files from the onelickext4 1.3 and I'm not afraid of adb or using the terminal on my phone.

Boot into recovery. Goto advance. Select reboot recovery. That should bring you to v where you wanna be. If it don't then its time to odin

If you boot into CWM then go to advanced then reboot recovery that should put you in 2.5.1.2

The problem is, that when I reboot recovery, it brings me back to 2.5.1.0. I have a working phone right now, so I don't feel like using Odin again, yet.
It seems like there should be a way to get the correct recovery back on the phone with the terminal or adb. I've only been using android since October, so it is taking some work to learn how everything is done in the android world. Luckily, I went to school for programming on linux, but I'm a little rusty.

Please note that until other ROMs add support (namely the new recovery binary in /system/bin/recoveryfiles) I cannot guarantee recovery will function properly

So I'm going to try pushing the recovery file from the prepare.zip and see if that works.
edit: It works! I'm getting errors from missing bitmap files, but that should be pretty simple to copy over as well.

Bonsai4All 1.0.4 does not support ext4. I'm surprised your phone even boots, which leads me to believe that you may still be rfs.

You could download the QuickBoot app from the Market. Selecting Recovery from within the app automatically boots the phone into Clockwork 2.5.1.2

You all misunderstand.
I can boot just fine. I was on Quantum 2.5 and switched to Bonsai4All 1.0.4, which was pre-ext4. I installed the ext4 kernel at the time of flashing, so the phone works.
No matter how I got into recovery after installing Bonsai4All, it went to 2.5.1.0. That includes using quickboot or reboot recovery from within recovery. And I can't flash anything with 2.5.1.0 since it won't flash to ext 4.
How I fixed it:
1. Remount as rw
2. Copy /system/bin/recoveryfiles/recovery and /system/bin/recoveryres/* from the prepare.zip to my phone.
3. Remount as ro
And voila! Now I can get into 2.5.1.0 and 2.5.1.2.

Check.to make sure you do indeed have ext4 working by using adb shell. I just don't see how the phone booted on bonsai if you have ext4 installed.

I too have epic experience 2.0.07 working with ext4. I actually have the same problem he's having so I'm gonna try his method. It boots up fine and and works but can't get into CW 2.5.1.2. Funny thing is I can still flash zip files through regular CW. Probably because they're not roms. I've checked through adb and and it says I'm using ext4. I can also tell the differance to. My quadrant score is like 1536. I know quadrant it ain't real world but the dev of midnight rom has a video in his blog showing the differance. I'm pretty close to what he got.

You can make other DK28 roms work with ext4 by flashing an ext4 compatible kernel after flashing the rom. If I had just tried to flash bonsai without an ext4 compatible kernel, it would freeze at the samsung screen and I would have to Odin out of it. I made that mistake once already when I stopped paying attention to what I was doing.

Clarification on how I solved my problem is below. I had a usable phone the entire time, I just didn't have the cwm I needed.
It almost sounds like a your problem is a kernel issue, except you have it with so many roms. There may have been an error in the file system conversion somewhere that is causing you trouble. You don't usually get the "E: can't do whatever" error if your cwm is compatible with your file system.
My suggestion to you would be to Odin back to a good image. You do it basically the same as doing the modem. Uncheck everything on the left. Put your .pit in the pit section. Put your .tar file (or .tar.md5) into the box that says pda (the first box). Then, plug your phone in and flash.
After that, you can run the one-click root and recovery to get root and cwm 2.5.1.0 back. Then you can start playing again. Remember, if you use ext4 then you must have an ext4 compatible kernel. If you use rfs, you must use an rfs compatible kernel. You can use any rom on ext4 if you flash an ext4 kernel immediately after you flash the rom and before you reboot the phone. If you forget to do the kernel, you will hang at the samsung screen. Some roms are ext4 or rfs only, and some have a dual file system kernel. Currently, you can mix and match any dk28 kernel with any dk28 rom. Don't try to mix kernels and roms from different builds, though.
Now for further clarification on how I got 2.5.1.2 back when using a rom that didn't have it baked in:

I guess my solution was about as clear as mud. In order to do this, it helps to be somewhat comfortable using a command line.
I used the prepare.zip that was a part of the original ext4 conversion to get the recovery files. When you open the prepare.zip it has the standard flashable zip structure and is organized according to where the files are supposed to end up on your phone. Open the zip, open the system folder, open the bin folder and copy the folder named "recoveryres" to your sd card. Then open the "recoveryfiles" folder and copy a file named "recovery" to your card as well. Put these files somewhere easy to find, like a folder named "cwm" at the root of your card.
Next, use a terminal emulator to remount your phone to rw so you can write to the protected areas. Most of our roms included a small remount script, so all you have to do is type "remount rw" without the quotes. Later you will use "remount ro" to make things read only again.
Now, you're going to copy those files that you got from the prepare.zip to their proper places on your phone. You did leave them somewhere easy to find, right?
Copy "recovery" to /system/bin/recoveryfiles/ and copy the "recoveryres" folder to /system/bin/. You may have to watch and make sure it doesn't skip any files when copying the recoveryres folder.
After that, remount ro and you are done.

[RECOVERY] 3e Recovery Modded w/ No Verification

NOTE

I have noticed some of you are having issues after installing a new kernel or rom, when you boot into recovery you now have 3e, which does not allow unsigned zips to be flashed. With this version of 3e it has no-verification check, now allowing you to flash whatever you want.
This zip has
1) 3e recovery modified to disable signature checking
2) disables the forced wipe after installing any update.
Instructions
1)Download and extract the file below
2)Use a terminal emulator or ADB shell and type.. (or you can use Root Explorer or SGSTools to mount system RW)
Code:
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/stl9 /system
3)Use a file manager like Root Explorer and copy the recovery file to /system/bin and replace the one there
4)Now, reboot and you should have a modded 3e recovery with no signature verification
You can either leave the modded 3e recovery or you can now flash CWM via Rom Manager
**Just like anything else, I am not responsible if this bricks your phone, this is fairly simple, follow the guide...Do at your own risk**

Old news, we have CWM now in pretty much everything.
Also you cannot just replace the recovery file... you have to replace the images in sbin or in the zImage its self, otherwise you get errors and cannot do anything.

I done the exact method above and works fine for me...
Place extracted recovery file in /system/bin/ , reboot and flash cwm via rom manager, works perfectly fine...the reason I posted was, if you read Hardcores thread, and seen this in other threads, that after flashing his kernel, when they goto recovery they now have 3e (depending on which method when entering recovery)..alot of people have done it the way I posted with no issues...im not trying to argue with you, you by far know more then me, just posting what worked for me and some others

sounds like a good idea for the people that updated to Rogers froyo that has the 3e recovery. You could just flash a new kernel, but this is definately a good alternative.

I'm a little confused on how the Recovery works..... I have a I897 that I flashed Cognition 2.3b8 to with ROM Manager/CWM and when I chose "reboot into recovery" from ROM Manager from inside Cognition, it worked fine after reloading packages once. A few days ago, I flashed Perception 10.1 with the firebird kernel. After noticing the battery didn't last as long as it used to with Cognition, I did some research and found the SpeedMod kernel K12L. Before I flashed it, I did a backup from ROM Manager which rebooted into CWM with no problems and did the backup with no problem. I have since flashed K12M and K12N. Now I thought I would give Cog 3.0 a shot and wanted to back up my current config with Perception 10.1/SpeedMod K12N. From ROM Manager, I chose to backup, named my backup and the phone rebooted into 3e Recovery and gave the errors you listed above but I don't understand why? Is it because of the I9000 kernel which doesn't make sense since Firebird is a I9000 kernel. Was it from flashing SpeedMod? Also noticed, that only the volume up/down buttons worked, not the power button which is also the select key. Only way out was to 3 button reboot (or pull the battery) which rebooted into CWM and then initiated the ROM Manager backup.
Any ideas why? Also, if I was to ODIN flash JH6 back to the phone, would that restore the Stock 2e Recovery? Sorry for the long post, but I'm still trying to learn this stuff and think you guys are awesome. The captivate would be a crappy phone if it wasn't for you all.

I guess if I had read your second post a little closer I would have seen that flashing SpeedMod causes it. I used your fix in the OP and when I tell it to "Reboot into Recovery" from ROM Manager, it boots into what I assume is 3e (Goes by real quick) and shows something about MOVI and verification and then boots into CWM Recovery v2.5.1.2. If I 3 button boot into recovery, it boots into CWM v2.5.1.0 SpeedMod ULFK. Seems to work now but I'm still confused. Thanks again.

chmod 777 /system/bin/recovery
That should give r/w permission to the file, ...i just tested to verify it and it worked for me. also if you have Root Explorer you can just long press the file and select Permissions and check all the boxes.

Exact the same thing is happening to me! Beforehand I had flashed CF Root to get Superuser also at the same time when rooting. I Still can boot into recovery with 3BR and come into the speedmod ULFK settings. Speedmod introduces 3e and you need signed packages. You must have 2e for this I assume!? Can anyone tell me what goes wrong?

Im using the Speedmod kernel and it always pissed me off that everytime I wanted to flash somethng via CWM that I had to pull the battery and restart my phone for it to finish because of the 3e 'no signed packages'
I did the steps in the OP and I noticed that I didnt even have a recovery file in system/bin but I put it in there anyway. I rebooted and flashed a different modem just to check and sure enough, it worked. Now I dont have to worry about pulling my battery and having to reboot my phone everytime I want to flash something.

Well the file is moved now. I get reinstall packages in recovery and thats all does. I installed rom manager and have cwm on my sdcard. The phone does not go into cwm recovery. It doesnot give me options to apply install.zip. I have dxjpa and z4root running. This modded recovery does not work. Any ideas?

Once you install cwm and reboot back into 3e, select reinstall packages, it will install cwm and then load into it , if it doesn't then the file didn't copy over, make sure it replaces it ok, I've used this quite a few times and it works everytime, and everyone that has posted has not had an issue, so it does work

It did copy over in fact i deleted the old one and put the new one in its place. It never installs anything and seems to error but its so fast i cant read it.

Try starting over, delete the recovery file and also delete the update.zip on the root of the sdcard, then copy the modded recovery over to /system/bin/ , then open rom manager and install cwm again, something could have happened with the update.zip, cause if you are able to get into 3e and select reinstall packages and it actually starts but errors out with the update.zip, then something could possibly be wrong with the update.zip .. it might restart after you select reinstall packages, but it should then load in to cwm, if it doesnt and boots back into android, then go into rom manager and select restart recovery and see if that works

Fresh Start

So i had to Odin back to stock because in whatever rom i used i wouldnt get vibration for text messages. This worked fine and i flashed back to eugenes stock jk2 that was prerooted. Now i need to install new roms again and im having trouble. I have rom manager installed and superuser was already there. I got the rom on the sd card (tried with multiple roms), but when i go to flash the roms it fails because it can't verify the signature. Even when i go to fix permissions and reboot my phone like rommanager tells me to it cant flash a new rom. On the other roms i had i would just go to advanced options in recovery and disable verification checks but with the stock recovery i cant do this. So my main question is why isnt this option in cwm recovery and how can i get it there so i can start getting roms again. Thanks for anyone who takes the time to read this...

Make sure that you have CWM recovery flashed onto your phone using odin. Also make sure that whatever rom you install is on agreement with your software version.

yea maybe i need to try one of eugenes roms because its his froyo version? i have cwm because i installed it through rom manager (well at least i think i have it)

Are you putting the rom on the internal memory?

Yea i copied it to the iternal sd, i see it on the internal sd, but the only way to reflash it is to rename it update.zip becauae all i can do is reinstall system packages

You have to download cwmrecovery, plug your phone in while in download mode and put cwmrecovery onto your phone. Just installing rom manager doesn't cut it and trying to flash anything will give the exact errors you're talking about.

You put the rom Just on the internal sd card not any folders right?

its doesent matter at least for me if the rom is right there or in a folder no difference just file called update.zip need to be there (not in the folder )

and no ! u cant flash clockwork recovry thru odin ! loL both of these program u mentioned are intended to flash roms not to be flashed as rom p u can flash in clockwork recovery if the rome is made for it which would be packed with .zip file if its odin file it would be .tar not every rom is flashable thru odin or clockwork depends how devs made it

Something must have gotten corrupted in the file transfer. I know your fustrated . Have you tried repeating the odin process?

Yea it was on the internal sd, i mean iv probably flashed 20 different roms and i know how to move them between different file folders and how to access them ect... The only problem is basically that im stuck in stock which has a different recovery

No this sounds like a good idea though, maybe i should use a different tar file.

Here is the update.zip that will flash you into clockwork from stock recovery. Put this on your phone's internal sd, reboot to recovery, and hit "reinstall packages". If your phone reboots to stock recovery again, hit reinstall packages again and the second time it should put you right into Clockwork Recovery. Good Luck.

wow it still says i cant flash the .zip file for some reason, it gives me the same error message about signature verification. I am rooted and i even rerooted but it didnt make a difference, thanks for trying to help though

What rom are you currently running, still on Eugene's JK2? If you Odin'd a stock file, you may have 2e recovery, not the modded 3e. Check this thread, it may help you out with the stock recovery issue. In fact untermensch mentions this kind of issue specifically in the OP. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423

I *CANNOT* boot into ClockWork recovery!

I am on a rooted Samsung Vibrant running Froyo and CWM 2.5.1.2. I cannot boot into CWM's recovery. I tried flashing CWM again and again, but I didn't work. I tried reinstalling packages at least 5 times and nothing. I just boot into the normal recovery. It worked the very first time I tried it, right after I rooted it and I installed CWM for the first time, then I had to reinstall packages twice. I used super-one-click to root my phone. I am using the latest version of busybox. I have given ROM Manager superuser access. I reinstalled ROM Managed. I deleted the clockworkmod folder and update.zip and installed CWM again. I have tried re-rooting twice with no success. What's the problem? It worked the very first time I rooted. But why not now?

I have this happen from time to time with ROM Manager....I just go clear down to the bottom and install an older version...say 2.5.1.1, hit reboot into recovery and it does, and then I update back to 2.5.1.2 and it will work after that on the newer version

Yea you have to use the "froyo" version, but you will also need to delete slacker radio from your phone via titanium first. That is the only way it would work for me.

Sorry, that didn't work either. Should I just restore to the stock 2.2 on my Vibrant? If so, where would I get the Stock 2.2 Vibrant files?

How do you feel abt voodoo?? You can install one of Supercurios kernels with voodoo and it will give you CWM recovery and root

Damn...Im still half asleep.....I re-read your post...the update.zip has to stay on your internal sd... I saw you deleted it which is why CWM isn't working. ROM Manager adds to that file when installing CWM Recovery.

It is in my internal SD. It's at /update.zip It added that every time I downloaded CWM. Should I Odin back to the stock 2.2?

I am having the EXACT SAME PROBLEM AS THIS GUY. And it's really frustrating, I have been working at getting this ****ing phone updated to some version of 2.2 for about 5 hours now.

I flashed 2.1.1.0 clockwork... whichever one was at the bottom of the list. AND I uninstalled Slacker Radio (dont know if that helped it for sure)
But After reinstalling the packages, then booting to recovery with the volume buttons down, I reinstalled package AGAIN and then CLOCKWORK INSTALLED OR WHATEVER! So now I'm flashing a new rom from it! thanks!

I ve had to downgrade ROM manager before also...so you might be ok to move back to 2.5.1.1 after your flash

So that may be part of his issue.
Clockwork seems to be hanging on installing my ROM right now...
is it normal for the progress bar to not move once it hits "Formatting DATA:..." ?

yea as long as it keeps saying Formatting, Copying, deleting...it will move if it flashes good..

When you did this where you on 2.2 (kA6) or 2.1 (JI6)?
im asking because im on 2.2 but for the life of me i havent been able to get clockwork to run. ive done almost every single step there is out there and have had no luck, but im thinking that my phone is HW locked so that may be my problem.
i can flash any stock rom through odin (JFD) (JI6)
and (KA6) through kies mini
but i cant get into clockwork recovery in any of those rom's.
