[Q] Please help a noob - Epic 4G General

I really need an overview to orient me.
So I want to flash a ROM on my Epic because I want good battery life and I want to get the crappy built in apps off, and I want to have all the goodies.
I guess I need a Kernel too? from what I see.
So then I downloaded Epic Experience 1.1.9 and Mixup Kernel with voodoo.
So now how to install?
I guess I need ClockworkMod? What is that anyway, and why do I need it? Does it install both kernels and roms? or one or the other? And does it matter what order I install the kernel vs the rom? or do I somehow combine them and install both at once?
Can someone please give me a walkthrough or overview of the whole process? I can not seem to find this kind of information in my searches. and I am feeling kind of overwhelmed.
Thanks!

So I just picked up a tab today and of course the first thing to do is root, so just a couple of questions, I have a SGS and am on a CM7 ROM, so Im not a complete noob, although this next question may be a noob one... I was looking at the VFP OC kernel and was wondering if it was rooted, meaning can I just flash that kernel and be rooted?
The useragent mod looks to be a no brainer as far as having it, what other apps or mods would you guys consider standard ones to have?
I wont be doing anything till I fully read over what to do as far as rooting or anything else goes but it seems pretty straight forward since we are using the same tools i.e. CWM and ODIN, so just looking for suggestions ATM
Thanks ahead of time

Welcome! Use the rooting video guide to get CWM on your GT10, once you've done that just use the CWM program to flash both ROMs and Kernels.
As for the mods, you don't need them as they are already baked into most of the ROMs. Try Starburst or Task650 for ROMs, And definitely use pershoot's Kernel (and get the SetCPU app to overclock, you can get it free somewhere in these forums).
Have fun!

I'm not trying to be rude, but, besides you, who knows what is best for you?
You've provided a link to a specific ROM, so I am assuming you are interested in this particular ROM. I would read over the developers post and see what features are contained in the ROM and decide if your stock ROM is better suited for you or not. If you have questions about that ROM, you could post them in the same thread you linked. If you are asking if that ROM is stable, then you should probably post that question in that thread instead of this one.
Hope this helps and, again, not trying to be rude, just wanting to understand your question.
I tried this ROM and I thought is was great. If you want to stay very close to stock but retain root it is a great way to go. You can edit the boot.prop file to disable the cell stand by and save battery and I was able to flash an OC kernel. This is the best way to get stock 3.2 because if you use the ACER update you will loose root. I ended up choosing Taboonay 2.1 over this ROM because vache has an online kitchen that allows you to choose which Acer stock apps you want to install and skip the ones you don't. Also, the stock apps get installed on the data partition, so they can be unistalled and don't take up room in the ROM. You can't go wrong with either ROM though, they are both awesome.
Hope this helps.
thenk you both the question was if these is correct rom for me because if i'm downloading from the post of the stock's there's many rom's there so i understand that here it doesn't matter

No prob. Best of luck. I do not have my A500 yet but I have a Viewsonic Gtab. Like with my Gtab, I am looking forward to trying out the custom ROMs for the A500. If you invest in a good backup strategy, trying out a new ROM isn't an earth shattering experience.
Glad I could help. Which ROM did you end up flashing?

[Q] "Downgrading" to Xoom's 3.1 Stock Kernel

Hi all!
It's me again with one more question.
Well, i'm about to install the Latest Tiamat's Kernel, because of a lot of features.
What i wanna know is: How do i install the Stock Kernel for my Xoom.
In case to return it, i will need to install the original one.
I will need to pick it up from another source?
Is there a way for me to backup my own?
Thanks for the attention. =)
I see that the above question has not been answered yet.
I'd really like to know the same and didn't find the answer yet.
Where do I get the stock kernel?
Thanks.

There are Roms posted in the Dev section. ICS Stock also.
Your best bet, would be to look at the directory structure on some stock rooted roms, and also look at the updater script for them.
This will give you a good starting point on what to change in your script as far as BB and SU.

Also, I highly recommend you look into the android build system.
Yes its complicated.
yes its hard at first.
but there is only so much you can do to mod an already compiled rom.
even with little coding experience you are able to do a lot when you have access to the source!
plus, if you fix something, you can submit it to have it fixed for everyone.
between this guide and our CM9 thread, you should be able to get started. we have some basic setup instructions over there.

- Asking for the "best" rom is prohibited on XDA, because no one can answer that question
- Regarding rooting before flashing a custom ROM, it is not mandatory. Some custom is pre-rooted already. Or you can root later.
- If you want to root using CF-Auto-Root, I will show you steps, it's very simple and easy, but it will trip the Knox. If you don't want the Knox to be tripped, search for Towelroot instead.
- As for extending battery life, you can try Lean Kernel (I have not tried it).

I have already rooted my NOTE 3 buy using 'Odin' uhm do you think I did the right decision for that?

Question again do I FLASH Kernel after I FLASH the custom ROM?
Typically the answer is yes, but I'm not too sure. Please follow the instruction for a specific kernel/rom.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
Sorry I personally use stock firmware so I have no idea on custom rom.
here is the main thread of Lean kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2488082

Lean kernel is here.
It's almost "impossible" to recommend a ROM. Everyone's needs/wishes are different. The best - and only sensible, to be honest - advice I or anyone else can give you is to read read and read again all youcan about a ROM, flash it, see if you like it, and repeat as necessary.

The dl links don't show for me from my work pc, but if you're in Europe and you have the 9500 version, I'm 99% sure it's 3.11-hlte-Eur or something similar.
Some custom ROMs may come budled with Lean kernel - not sure, I don't use it any more.
I know you're not asking for advice, but I mean well - as you say, you're new to flashing/ROMs etc. If I were you, I'd get to know whichever ROM you decide on first and its capabilities, especially root. Tweaking kernels would be the last thing I'd want to deal with. Trust me, you'll have more than enough tweaking to keep you happy for days irregardless of what ROM you use
