Hi,
I'm on a t-mobile contract and from what i understand, the android internet policy allows use of HSDPA speeds. However, although from a bit of research i learnt the phone does not show the 'h' logo due to it not being in the framework (if anyone could confirm this?) and on phone status it shows the network being on umts.
When i tried the sim card with my previous phone, it read 3g+ in the status bar, so is there a setting i need to enable on the x10, or is it a limitation of 1.6?
thanks
I'm on Virgin Mobile UK (which uses T-Mobile UK) and can confirm that it just has a 3G logo and in status says just UMTS.

Does this mean it is using HSDPA and just not displaying it, or just using regular 3G?
it will be using it but not showing a H.
Download speedtest if your not sure and see what speed you are getting. Should be more than 3g

okay, thanks for the reply
Yeah, im on T-Mob in the UK too and i can confirm that it will use HSPA when available, but you wont be able to distinguish between the two from the GUI. As i understand, its just a limitation of 1.6

gents,
i have an unlocked MyTouch, but i'm using it on russian Beeline network and i get no 3G. GPRS works fine and 3g icon showed up ones when i was setting up GPRS, but it never since came up.
I know for sure that provider supports it. Any thing I can do?
is there a way to check locked status of the phone?
thanks

Are you sure the network uses the same 3G frequencies as t-mobile? There are different sets of frequencies for 3G. For example, the ones t-mobile uses are different than most US providers.
If it works on your network at all then the phone is indeed unlocked.
is it possible to tweak with frequencies maybe at the rom level or are they hard coded?

It is most likely the radio can not transmit at any other frequencies (hardware limitation). Even if it were possible, you would need to be able modify the radio firmware to make it happen.
happy thoughts, happy thoughts, happy thoughts.....
thanks
Unfortunately you won't be able to get 3G outside of T-Mobile as I am pretty sure no other company uses 1700/2100 for 3G, even outside the US.

Actually, i'm using it on a regional US carrier that uses the same frequency, and at least one provider in Canada uses it as well. I would guess there may be a few others.
Edit: WIND Mobile, Mobilicity, and Videotron in Canada use the same as t-mobile.
Well since your not using tmobile as the provider your problem is you don't have the correct apn settings for your provider you can google them or ask your provider for the apn settings.

no, my GPRS works fine, it's 3G i was talking about.
Are you sure your provider uses the same spectrum as tmobile it goes from 1700-1799/2100-2199 that's a broad spectrum if you know what I mean.

Well, they probably don't, but as was mentioned by falken98, it is possible to modify radio firmware to make it work for other 3G provider.
Do guys here in development do that kind of mods?
It doesn't have to do with the firmware its hardcoded on the chip.

ATT, for whatever reason dumbs down their phones to not distinguish between the older UMTS 3G and HS*PA flavors which are technically 3.5G. Most unlocked (read non-ATT) phones on ATT will show up as H when they're getting their fastest speeds, although I have an old Nokia that actually has a '3.5G' indicator.
In short, if your phone says 'H', it's better than '3G'.

When I updated thru the QDL tool, I had the H on the 305 or 309 (whichever one it was)...then when I put DJSteve's 1.5.1 on my Streak, it went back to 3G.
Two questions:
1. Can I go into the build.prop files and change a line somewhere to get the H back?
2. If the answer to Q1 is yes, is it really going to get the faster speed, or is it just gonna give me the H instead of the 3G symbol?

anyways. its not european, its hsdpa not hspda. and the reason you see 3g instead of hspa on att devices can be for multiple reason. the obvious is that people see it and think "herp derp, im not on 3g! att suxors". another reason is that it will just show up as 3g on android 1.6 on most any device. and unless its told to show, if hsUpa is deactivated, the H wont show and att has made it a habit to remove hsupa from as many phones of theirs as they can.

As far as i'm concerned, 2G = GPRS
2.5G = EDGE, 3G = HSDPA
not sure about 4g though, we don't have it in the UK.
Probably who told you gave false info.
no, whoever told you that is an idiot
if you look on the top bar, on top of the data logo if it says:
G = Then you are on the GPRS mobile network (slow as fark)
E = Edge network (still slow as fark...but at least you're getting somewhere)
H = 3G/4G... the only way to tell is if you go into settings, about phone, network and look under Mobile Network Type
If it says HSDPA...youre on 3G
HSDPA+ = 4G

But in the UK, we can also get 3.5G which equals to 3G+,
So in The US, you don't have 3.5G? You just have 3G or 4G?
Actually, HSDPA+ is 3.5G, not 4G.

HTC really screwed the pooch by not including a 3G identifier (even though they show it in the user manual available for download). If my phone showed 3G then I'd be content with the speeds I'm getting. When I see H and only get 3G speeds, makes me feel like I'm not getting what I'm paying for!
I have NEVER seen true 4G connectivity on my phone (or my wife's, or even two demo phones-G2 and MT4G-at a t-mobile store). The only networks that connect to in the Houston area are UMTS and HSDPA, which are both 3G. I've never seen HSPA or HSPA+, strange since Houston and the suburb where I live are supposed to be 4g areas.
As it was explained to me by multiple techs from t-mobile: G=GPRS, E=EDGE, UMTS and HSDPA= 3G, HSPA and HSPA+= 4g
I'm also in a "HSPA+" area and don't see HSPA+ speeds.

I don't know if this true for the wireless industry in general, or if this is particular to T-Mobile, but I've been given a LOT of misinformation from T-Mobile reps over the years. Usually the info was regarding something technical, like this thread is about, but also about things like plans and phone prices. TMO has great customer service as far as the friendliness and helpfulness of their reps, but a lot of the info they give is often inaccurate.

Hope i dont get banned for this. Ok here is my set up:
T-Mobile tab w/Vibrant Sim
Bronken IMEI (to go online w/current Vibrant Sim)
Roto's Modem Switch
Roto's JME v4
So I am able to use Voice+Edge and go online at the same time but I have noticed something strange, sometimes I get the 'G' symbol and sometimes with 3 bars no less. Of course when I try to go online nothing happens and then it goes back to Edge and everything works as normal.
I am wondering if anyone with this setup has encountered this?
Why would the tab be trying to connect to 'G' while on Voice+Edge when supposedly we are not able to, could this be a clue?
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
I believe the 'G' stands for GSM (2G) and EDGE is the only available data network available with the GSM bands. Using the modem switcher mod, you can only get EDGE for data and 2G voice using the GSM bands.
'H' is for HSPA (3G) and is faster. As for 4G I have no clue.
Hope that helps.
Believe the G stands for GPRS actually.
So nothing to do with maybe being able to get Voice+3G :-/. Well guess we'll have to keep waiting until someone works that out then the T-Mobile tab will be complete.

I stand corrected. Lol. GPRS is even slower than EDGE. He must be loosing signal quality, that's the only time it would use GPRS, as a last resort. Specially if he can get EDGE.

This is what i thought too. We dont have LTE in my country yet but DC-HSPA+ is available in many places. When i test with my USB modem (42Mbps supported) , i able to get download speed like 15Mbps where my i9305 only 5-6Mbps. I did the test at same location, same time.
I check the network monitor apps, it shown my phone connected to HSPA+ (21.6Mbps).. not DC.. but i m within strong DC coverage area.

May seem like a silly question but does your mobile carrier support DC?
If its the same provider as the dongle then it obviously does but that's not clear from the post.

Well with my I9305 My highest speed on DC-HSPA+ is almost 12mbs and my network is **** and they are also upgrading the network in my area and they are the last network to have 4g they should have it early 2013. I already bought a telstra sim and I am going to activate it soon to test it as they have very good 4G coverage, My freind reached 40mb+ download with his I9305 ON 4G with telstra.
I think i explained all this in the other thread regarding apps showing certain things, Your app most probably doesnt show DC-HSPA+ because some countries call it different and depends where the app was created. With the app called (Radio Mon) when i am connected to DC it shows (HSPA) where as the I9300 shows (HSDPA) but both phones show the H+ symbol. When I did some research on HSPA vs HSDPA I got the hint that HSPA is the more potentially faster one Im sure i already said this in the last thread when you asked this question

Anyway, 12Mbps on DC-HSPA+ is consider very good speed. WHen i use USB modem, i able to get speed like you or something it hit 15Mbps++, in the same location, same time, my i9305 only able to get 5 to 6Mbps. I did almost everything like, choose WCDMA only, restart the phone, lock into 2100 band only, but all not help. my speed more or less the same never exceed.
