Yahoo Video Chat coming soon - EVO 4G General

http://blogs.reuters.com/mediafile/2010/10/07/new-yahoo-app-to-challenge-apple-facetime-on-iphone/
Looks like Yahoo video chat is coming very soon to Android and the iPhone. I personally don't use Yahoo but it's a good option for those who want Phone to Computer video chat.

I'm certain some awesome soul on here will grab the APK and get it out to the rest of the Android users who have front-facing cameras (I have an EVO now).
Yahoo is beating many others to the punch in terms of phone-to-phone and PC-to-phone video calling. Skype, Fring, Qik, and Tango will all be left in the dust and be scrambling once this takes off.

Ohh cool
Sent from my HTC Evo

anyone have the apk? its in Mytouch is that not out yet?

All I can say is it's about time! I can't believe it's taken this long. I just assumed that after fring and skype fell out the market would be flooded with apps that support video chat on the other well known services like yahoo, aim, etc. Now hopefully some of the others will start showing up and someone can finally build a multi-protocol app that supports video on several different services (think trillian for android with video chat support).
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

cant wait for this......

Yea is someone would make a simple phone to pc video chat app, charge a Buck, it would be a goldmine.

I dont think anyone will have the apk, I dont think yahoo released the update yet.

This app just hit the iPhone App Store... going to check it out and see if anyone I know uses Yahoo messenger or whatever. Hmmm... but where's the Android App? Do we have to wait for the new MyTouch to come out before we get out hands on this for Android?

Finally, someone who can do the video chat right on Android. I used to use Yahoo video chat before, it has been a while. Qik never didnt it right, Fring almost had it, & Skype. well i dunno. Still waiting on them.

I hate how the iPhone always gets their **** before Android users. Why can't companies release them at the same time? Oh yeah, because everyone and their mom, dog, and cousin have a ****ing iPhone.
That's the one thing I really "like" about the iPhone is that they get a priority over every single phone. It's pretty annoying if you're an Android (or anything other than iOS) fan.

Part of the reason EVERYONE has an iPhone, is due to all the marketing they do. Not only commercials running during EVERY commercial break, but pay attention to all the shows on TV. MOST of the shows on TV are promoting some apple product. In episodes of House, all the computers, and most of the cell phones are apple products, NCIS has been highlighting the iPad and iPhone. Psych, CSI, etc... The list goes on. I was actually quite surprised when watching Closer, when one of the detectives pulled out an Evo to take a video confession from a suspect.

Oh dude, I already noticed that. It's really annoying. Entourage has had the iPad on it, but they give equal love to the BlackBerry on that show as well. But yeah, the iPod/iPhone is EVERYWHERE. I just wish Android users got a little bit of love when it came to some apps.
EVO video confession - hell if they knew how horrible our phone is in indoor low light, the guy would have put his phone back up!

So wait... youre telling me they havent even developed video chat for android yet????

Its coming in November, relax.

get tango. video chat now, cross platform, full screen, 3g or wifi, better quality than fring or qik, and you don't have to create a whole account or anything, it just uses your phone info

This "bad" press is telling me something...

On the outside someone might be thinking the N1 is a terrible phone plauged with problems etc. But the more I look into these articles and reviews they seem to be 'complaining' about non issues.
You've all seen the engadget and gizmodo reviews, but take this article: 6 reasons not to like the nexus one!? This guy made up his mind before he even picked up the phone, and then wrote his article based on other bias reviews.
There was also an article featured on /. regarding the support backlash but all it cites are random 'customers' getting bounced around, and doesn't corrilate a common problem or state what these 'people' were having problem with. However there does seem to be a real problem with 3g/edge flapping. If the article had been written as well as this random forum poster I would be fine with it, but instead PCW took the angle of FUD, and it just angers me.
...and then it hit me, this phone might just be the iphone killer and fanboys are actually getting scared. Thoughts?
"6 reasons to hate" is a hands-off schoolboy attempt at bashing.
he's just pissed he isn't important enough (or hasn't budgeted his finances) enough to have one handed him.
the other non-reviews are a farce. when there is a real, hands on, weekly use review of the nexus, i'll listen up. for now it's all M$ generated (and other mobile OS venders) fud that proves the nexus is awesome hardware, running awesome software.
sure, there are some what-ifs about verizon/att/whoever, but they're just carriers. dumb pipes. really really dumb pipes. we all know it's the hardware and more importantly the SOFTWARE that matters. the dumb pipe carriers are just mad they finally have a real reason to fear phones that are not chained to their crappy services and contracts.
let them whine. the fud is easy to cut through with logic.
I got the Nexus One. Your are correct, the only problem is the 2G/3G connection switching. The computing power of this phone is amazing.
I never like professional reviews for anything, movies, games or tech because theyre all just some one paid to write their opinion, and you never know whos writing their check, or their companies check. I do however like user reviews from people that paid for and really use the product, and I think those have been strong. I think the most important part of the "6 reasons not to like" article is all the backlash at the bottom and users defending the phone, shows how much people really like theirs already. I am really lovin this phone, also I havent had the 3G issues some have been having, I have a mytouch, G1 and N1, all on TMob and they all have 3G all the time for me, I think it really depends on the market cause if it was a hardware or software issue I would think everyone would have that problem
am I the only one who IS NOT seeing this 2G-3G problem? I mean I do see the 3G connection sometimes going from 2 bars to 4 bars in the same area, and In some places around where I live I can't get 3G coverage, but this is the EXACT SAME behavior I saw on my MT3G
First off, I have to say that I absolutely love the N1...I don't remember the last time I was this obsessed with a gadget both before and after I got it.
That being said, I was starting to get a little nervous while waiting for FedEx because of all the bad press I was seeing. But then I noticed that a large chunk of this press was generated by sites like macworld.com or other apple, iphone, mac related sites. While the N1 has some minor glitches(what piece of technology doesn't), this is mostly a case of fanboys feeling threatened because people won't be oohing and aahing over there iphone as much.
P.S. I came from a G1 and am seeing absolutely no difference/problem with my 2g/3g service.
These network issues seem to be only in the US.
Never had any problems in the UK with my iPhone/3G, G1, Hero.
But then again pretty much all the UK is 3G anyway
Clearly people are writing this phone off without even seeing/using it!
Was in work and two are big WinMo and iPhone fans and they even said a few hours after it was officially announced that the iPhone is better without even knowing anything about it! I then told them about the Snapdragon / 512mb ram etc and then they shifted it saying yer but Android is rubbish!
But in work their are also a few Android users (G1, Tattoo and Hero) and they couldn't wait to see what Android does and if anything from the N1 will get ported etc!
Its just like the good old which console is the best? 360 or PS3! You can argue all day but you will never win the argument!

The fact that "no multi - touch" is riddled on most reviews and that most people are referencing Engadget should make you realize the TERRIBLE shape electronic reviews are in.

i agree completely. i have zero, ZERO problems with by n1 except for the dynamic polar clock of course. Google was very prompt with a return e-mail about the polar clock also. im very sure Google has an update soon for up to fix the polar clock and the 3g/edge switch issue. i seem to remember alot of bad press about the iphone when it originally came out also, as i recall it had alot of bugs. i guess this is "bad press" is our hater-aid and we should just drink up while the ifanboys drink their Apple kool-aid.

REMOVABLE BATTERIES?! NON-SENSE! (sarcasm)
I don't really get why people are bashing the N1. In the end, it's the same as the 3gs in terms of app placement- the hardware's faster than the other two models and developers have to make a choice of whether or not to take advantage of it- Android's made tons of improvements and now there's even fewer restrictions on the hardware (sold unlocked, super easy root)
I've loved my G1 for awhile and while it's a tank, I eagerly await getting the N1 at the end of the month as I've been able to toy with one (boss ordered after CES) and it pretty much lives up to all the hype.
I'm eager to get my hands on the section of the SDK that will allow for programming of live wallpapers- i love theming, and I can't wait to get a few of my ideas for a live background.

The trackball comment sounded like it was pulled directly from the gizmodo review. The trackball does the same thing it has on every android phone, there's nothing to report here.
Those tech writer/review are dumb asses. Every new good potential phones that come out they write up a review or hand on and then compare it to the iphone and then they talk junk about it. Esp those engadget @sshole. For ex, when the N900 came out, they talk mad sh!t about it comparing to the iphone, well for once, if they were smart enough, iphone is up to 3.1 version, and maemo 5 is still not complete. And now the nexus, android os had about 1.5 yr to grow so far. Iphone os? Well maybe 3 now? Iphone didnt have mms til 3.0 comes out, those reviewer are a bunch of iphone fanboys who seriously cant stand the thought of a competing device that might have a chance to beat it. I rather read forums and base my buying decision than trusting some blog writing techy.

I had a discussion yesterday with one of my coworkers on that, because he's stuck on a family plan. But this is a t-mobile decision, and them doing what they've always done and screwing over existing customer in favor of new signups. I'd kinda like to see the churn numbers at tmo. In any event, its still cheaper to buy the phone outright and continue with my grandfathered plan, even further non-contract plans are still cheaper in the end, and tmo is the only provider currently offering this inside the United States.
I hate everything about my new super sleek, super fast N1. What I hate most is its speed. Actually, I think I hate its awesome screen the most. Or that it's too light and thin for the power it has. I also hate how easily my contacts, calendar and email sync seemlessly with my device. I hate the fact I have to use a top of the line browser when going online and I especially hate that all my music plays so well. Watching all those HD quality movies I've converted and watching high quality YouTube videos is so boring. I can't stand my desktop full of all those widgets that provide me with useful information and those folders keeping my apps sorted just get in the way. But--and here's the most important thing I hate about my N1--I hate that I can make phone calls wherever I am. I'd much rather my calls be dropped. And that's all before I even rooted it to get access to more stuff to make my N1 terrible.

Surprised, Cool Stuff and Questions

Ok
What has surprised all you guys about this device and what bonuses have they surprises given you?
Is there any cool things about your phone that you would like to share with anyone.
Heres where all of you guys can post questions about the phone, and people on the forum will answer.
I will start of with the questions;
1. Is it possible to video chat on MSN with this device and how stable is video chat. In iphone adverts which are shown ridiculously often there facetime looks pretty fast. Just wana know if the dell streak can compare.
Now Share with fellow dell streakers
not sure if msn messenger supports video chat for mobile devices.
I know Qik does (thats whats on the evo) and Fring used to have Skype video chat, which allowed evo's to video call iphones, but Skype stopped them for not following their terms. I wonder if we can get the Qik .apk from the EVo and install it on the Streak so Evo's can video call the streaks.

It is not possible to video chat on msn via fring thats for sure. I did manage to get video chat to work on skype via fring until skype pulled it out from them. Ever since i have not found an app where i can use video chat with skype now
I'm surprised the time drifts, the calendar seems to be an hour a head for my tasks and activities, even when I set the time back again manually.
I'm surprised its taking so long to give us froyo, I'm surprised at the cost of the dell accessories. I'm surprised I always get the home screen select widget when I press the phone to my ear. I'm surprised the keyboard is so bad to type on.
I'm surprised I still love the phone....but I do

I agree on this the most this is F&*(ing annoying
Yeah the keyboard was a surprise too me too - can we install Swype or enable predictive text?
Surprised by how much I want a 2.x update.
Surprised that I actually really like the Streak!
Hi all,
Well the thing that has surprised me the most is just how good the screen is outdoors in sunlight it's better then any other device I've seen or used and by quite some way.
I have also been pleasantly surprised at just how good the battery life has been on the Streak especially considering how large and bright the screen is it's much better then i would of imagined it would be.
Unlike some here i never had a problem with the Keyboard although have been surprised at how good and how much i like Swype on it instead.
Like others I'm surprised and i should also say disappointed that we are not getting 2.2 in September but seeing as when they announced that Froyo was due to launch and it has been delayed. I suppose I'm not really that surprised it's going to take a little longer before we get it and would rather have it bug free then rushed.
This list could go on for ever with all the positives i have found about the Streak that have pleasantly surprised me but then no device is perfect never mind perfect for everyone but for me the Streak is the best device so far and there is nothing i would consider swapping it for.

Really looking forward to this. I wanna video chat!
If it works between PCs (including Macs!) and phones with the Nexus S's front-facing camera, this is a godsend. NOTHING yet in the Android Market fulfills both those requirements, something I find is a big fail after there's been Android phones for a year now with FFCs...
I can't wait for this. It really should have been added back when the Nexus S first came out. I support the idea of getting all of the kinks out, and if they made it better because of it then more power to them, but those at Google should work on their presentation. I know, it's not about bragging, it's about functionality, but come on.
I hate to say it, but they should have taken a cue from apple and released video chat in addition to their other big events. Just look at the iphone 4 (once again, sorry I had to bring it up). Of course Apple's presentation is overkill, but it was all of the things at once that made it a little bit beast. New design, thinner, faster, double res display, and software that gave it multitasking and facetime.
Now that it's this close to I/O Google should have just released then. It's just two weeks, why not wait? Then explode at I/O with all the goodies. Better that than an "oh yeah, by the way......"
Just my opinion though.
Skype + Other Mediocre Video take notice
Glad that Google stepped up to the plate to do this. Hopefully they will do an IOS client later (not that I use an Apple device but have friends that do - FaceTime being Apple only just blows).
Good thing it looks like from the demo is it will work with the Gmail Talk/Video plug in - which is BRILLIANT! First Google Video Call app that can go back to a desktop - a sore missing feature since Skype has done NOTHING with Video on Android. This being Google let's see if they later support multi chat/video - I don't see Google doing that and charging for it like everyone else (barring Qik) is trying to do.
Android really needed a proper Video Talk app and I hope this cuts it.

Looks like it will, from the Google Link:

Their text:
You can now video or voice chat with your friends, family and colleagues right from your Android phone, whether they’re on their compatible Android tablet or phone, or using Gmail with Google Talk on their computer. You can make calls over a 3G or 4G data network (if your carrier supports it) or over Wi-Fi.

If I'm not then I have a question. how hard would it be to develop some thing similar to the software on the Iphone. the software I am talking about of course is the addition to the iphone 4s known as siri. now before anyone starts to hate on me. I swear I do not have iphone envy. in fact I have been thinking about this long before the iphone 4 announced this new addition to their phone. I was even talking to some people in my family about it a couple of weeks before the new iphone was announced. my inspiration and desire to see this happen came from a movie in the early part of this decade I saw from director steven spielberg called A.I in the movie technology was so advanced that even toys where able to communicate with people. keep in mind when I first saw this movie the closest thing to a smart phone was windows phone. the iphone nor android existed. then two months ago I was bored at home with nothing to do. so i decided to watch a movie. and again I had chosen A.I cause I hadn't seen it in so long. and realized since I had last seen the movie technology has greatly evolved. and while I am realizing this my cousin is talking to his phone using the voice search. which in turn looks up what he is asking for. and I thought phones can already hear us and respond. why not talk back to us. that fact that stupid apple beat android to punch really pisses me off. I'm sure they have some kind of patents on this technology. so I doubt google will be working on anything like this for us any time soon. so why not the people of xda create it. im sure if every android dev on this site worked together and everyone across all the different platforms donated we could make it happen. in fact we could make our A.I better then iphones. what do yall think?
I haven't used an iPhone in a long time, so I'm not familiar with the technology offered by Siri. However, our phones are completely capable of talking to us already. For example, a simple tasker profile can have your texts read to you when you arrive. Navigation offers spoken turn by turn directions (often with horrible pronuncation though... it pronounces a street near me, spelled Wittelsbach as "Wittels b***h"). I have a talking clock tasker profile set up on my phone. I'd love to see someone push this technology further though.
yeah
well this new A.I is exclusive to the newest iphone being released. its pretty awesome. from the videos I've seen on it. if someone text you. the phone says, you just received a text from janet saying, hi jon are still going out for dinner tonight? do wish to respond to her text. and the guy says yeah or something like that. tell her I will pick her up at 8. and the phone again talks back to him saying sending message to janet. another example is if you say I'm hungry. the phone will ask you if you would like it to look up restaurants close by. I'm telling you this thing is insane! as much as I hate the iphone. I've been wanting something like this for the longest time. I am like most people of this site. a really big tech junky. tech is all think about lol
Me too. Well, tech and woman. Haha... That sounds pretty nice. I'd love to see something like that available for all Android phones. Perhaps sometime in the future we'll see something like this... a gift from the developers we all know and love.

oopS! didn't know that!! : )
will be great!!!
anyway, i like this ad :d
Yeah it's a good ad, but some of the things they've listed there make Samsung a laughing stock.
Shake to update

Are these REALLY selling points for the device? I don't think so.
IPhone fans have already started making their own images with a list of iPhone pros and I have to say their lists are more compelling than simple gestures.
I'd rather Samsung list the actual things that make their phone the best in the world rather than gimmicky gestures.
Edit: I would really prefer it if they didn't compare S-Voice to Siri as well. S-Voice completely sucks.

Your kidding right? Samsung probably shouldn't have used some of those but the isheep lists were a complete joke. Imessage? Puleeze. I turned that **** off first thing and downloaded whatsapp.
Also to answer your question in the thread that was closed. Refresh rates matter in every aspect and not just games and viewing so yes people should care.

Says Samsung Mobile USA at the bottom.
Meh. They don't need to market it. Apple is already marketing the S3. Now, thanks to the crap iPhone 5, we're still the king of Android!!!
Well, at least until the new Nexus comes out at the end of the year.

I happen to find iMessage really useful. I use it to talk to my long distance fianceé a lot. I'd gladly use Whatsapp if you could use it on an iPad, but you can't.
Some other things I've seen listed that are useful; iCloud, Do Not Disturb ('Blocking Mode' in the SGS3 Jelly Bean update covers this), more available apps, shared photo stream (very useful), Airplay.
Whilst I think that MicroUSB is perfect and Apple are idiots for not using it, I don't think Samsung are in any position to criticise Apple for that:

I did laugh when people were trying to say that FaceTime and Panorama were selling points for the iPhone, when S3 has had both of these features since launch (FaceTime in the form of Google Talk).

The S3 has much more DNLA options than the iPhone. Not sure of the all share cast dongle is as good as airplay but its the same technology plus the S3 has every direct WiFi connection under the sun with the buddy photo share and all share and kies air.
Icloud, well um no thanks. I had the 4s for 6 months and never used it. To be fair,I don't use drop box for my phone either. Although my Toshiba laptop uses drop box a lot.
Whatsapp is superior because not everyone has an iphone. Blackberry, windows, iphone, android compatible and you name it.
Do not disturb has been on Android phones for ages. Look up tasker and reject calls on your dialer.
Either way. Those lists that were made by isheep are more pathetic because they actually truly believe that they are good lists.lol
While the Samsung marketing guy is probably just some undergrad marketing major that knows nothing about phones and just made that list up from spec sheets on the internet.

AirPlay can play to speakers in every room of your house at the same time. I don't think AllShare or any other Samsung solution (or DLNA) does that, but correct me if I'm wrong. The fact that AirPlay speakers are about five times the price of other comparable speakers is a bit of a joke though.
iTunes - didn't say anything about this. You mean iCloud?
Whatsapp is superior... for phones. I have an iPad and a phone. Whatsapp won't work on my iPad. Also, doesn't Whatsapp only support logging in on one device at a time? Skype is probably a better multi-platform example as you can login to it on multiple devices at the same time (including tablets and PCs)
Reject calls doesn't have as many features as Blocking Mode. Also, reject calls is blacklist based whereas Blocking Mode is whitelist based. I.e. with Blocking Mode you can set it to auto-reject calls from everyone but your nearest and dearest. I know about Tasker, but I'm pretty sure people are comparing features included by default. Samsung are, at least.

Yeah I meant Icloud. Anyways Samsung could have used wireless charging, better multitasking, better notifications bar etc. but there is really no point because people don't really care about that stuff.
People do care about useless gimmicky features though so Samsung's list if every bit as good as those crappy ifan lists from a marketing perspective.
And the apps still count even if they are not preinstalled. Apple fans champion their ecosystem all the time which includes the app store. IOS does have a much better selection of games though.
