can somebody please tell me what kind of speeds i should be getting with barnacle wifi as i am only able to get between 45kbs and 50 kbs even when i use wifi tether the speeds are the same.can i get faster speeds or is this normal my phone is rooted thank you for your time
I thought Barnacle just shared the phone's internet (3g) through wifi to your PC.
correct me if I'm wrong...
well, it all depends on your reception and the type of connection (EDGE/3G) you're on.
I am in LA area, on AT&T and I can usually get anywhere from 512kbps - 2-2.75mbps down.
Judging from your speed, I am guessing your phone is only on EDGE. Which x10 (x10i/x10a) do you have? what carrier are you using? and where are you located?
3g speeds
thanks for the replies i am newto this. my phone is x10i i am on t-mobile and in the uk if this helps thanks

Admittedly, the monthly plan is quite expensive, but there are seemingly many variations of contracts at so so prices....if you need a new contract anyway. Worth considering for some people.

Owning both Orange and Vodafone datacards I still remain COMPLETELY unconvinved by 3G though.
Seems so. click the link above then follow the link at the bottom of that page 'All tariffs and promotions'. There it is explained what data tariff bundles one can get.
Yep, if you stick a normal, everyday T-Mobile sim in a 3G phone in the UK, then you'll be able to transfer data at 3G rates.
As far as I know they haven't sorted out video calling yet but it's "on it's way" (although I don't think I know anyone with a videophone anyway).
hah ha! "transfer at 3g rates" - that'll be the same as gprs and less reliable then!
3g is fine, if you're sat next to the mast, with no-one else sharing the connection, as soon as you get multiple users the data rate drops and connectivity issues rise. Its sh*te, especially if you are running apps that need a steady connection.

Compared to GPRS, I find UMTS significantly quicker on my Nokia, but that's probably just luck...

Just got this phone thinking it was 3G and I dont think that I am getting DSL speeds. Can anyone help me or direct me to the info. about the phones usage and if it is able to be used as 3G in USA on Cingulars network. THanks a million.
Sorry dude, the hardware radio used in the device is not compatible with Cingular's 3G... Nor is it likely that you can use it with T-mobile's upcoming HSDPA service, the US military still owns the exact radio band the Uni would need to use in the US.
you don't get DSL speeds on 3G anyway, the max is 384Kbps.
unless you have really slow DSL across the pond! here the average is 8Mbps, I'm on 24Mbps.
Thank you for the Information. That helps out a lot knowing that this phone is not what I thought it was when I bought it. Oh well, you live and learn. Thanks again for the Info.
Hi there,
Just bought this a few days ago and playing with it. Got the 16key Tmobile UK edition.
I have tried to use it as a modem for my laptop, but the speeds I am getting are 270kbps. I was expecting it to be quite a lot faster?
This is with a 3G icon at the top which I assume means that it is connected via UMTS.
Is this the speed I should be expecting? I am on the 8th floor of my building but have got 3 bars of reception (not sure if that is related or not).
What kind of speeds should I be expecting? on both UMTS or HSDPA?
I am with T-Mobile.
Thanks
you'll geh an H-icon when connected via HSDPA, which is faster than 3G.
yup... but what speeds should i be expecting?
is 270 low for 3g?

Hmmm, I believe that ~46Kbytes/sec is fastest speed with 3G (386kbits). With HSDPA (3,5G) you can have faster connections e.g 2Mbits, even upto 3,5Mbits if network supports its.
Edit // Ps. Mobile operator may require that HSDPA has to be ordered as "value addad service" so it may cost more than basic 3G connection (usually its not included to the basic contract)
This might help...

ahh cool thanks... so 270 aint that bad i guess...
i'll test out my speed at work where im getting hsdpa showing up see how that shows
I live in Leeds (UK), and have HSDPA service mostly when I connect to the web. I downloaded a 4mb file on it last night and it took just under a minute to complete. I was pretty impressed. You don't need WiFi on a touch dual when you can download at these speeds and when you have an (almost) unlimited data plan
Can't wait when Firefly or Opera 9.5 comes out.

well ... exactly!! when you have an unlimited data plan :\
Guys i've tried everything, APN settings, Build.prop file mods etc ...
but my download speed remains at 44-45 kb/sec!!!
someone please help, I've tried posting this in the rom thread too ...
regards.
helps if you tell us what network you are using
Yes your network may be restricting your quality of service (qos) to that level
I only get 3G not HSPDA on Virgin and I checked its a qos issue - working on them, but they are very slow getting back

the thing is I got HSDPA speeds on winmo 6.5, and it was reasonably fast, 45 kb/sec is riddiculously slow ... plus the H icon also shows up when I use Android also 45 kb/sec is well below 3G speeds ...
I dunno whats going on, but I'll speak to T-mobile anyway and see what excuse they come up with ...
regards.

Almost a year
I've done the whole diagnosis tweaking (release 6) and pretty much all of the other tweaks I've found in these very helpful threads.
But my download and upload speeds are atrocious. 80-150 kbs mostly. I ALWAYS have a 3g signal. I'm located in Boston and before this I had a Tilt2, which data speeds avg. 2000 - 3500 kbs.
Could it be my sim card? it is like 3-4 years old. Just a thought, because really i have no idea.
I am a novice when it comes to this type of tweaking. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thx
The specs indicate that the Focus is only capable of HSPA (HSDPA and HSUPA), not HSPA+.
Michael.
ouch, that hurts....8(
Thanks for the quick reply...much appreciated
But your Focus should still be able to match the speed of your Tilt2 which is HSPA as well (but with HSUPA disabled). The real world experience really depends where you are and how many AT&T customers are on the same tower as you. I routinely get about 100kbps speed (download) on my various 3G smart phones as well here in nation's capital.
On the other hand, a lot of ppl who bought the new '4G' HSPA+ AT&T phones (Inspire 4G and Atrix 4G) are also rarely ever get HSPA+ speed at all. Those so called 4G phones also comes with HSUPA disabled.
So, in the end, it is the same crappy AT&T network that limits your connection speed, really doesn't matter what phone you have. I'll be happy if I can reach the full 3G speed (2 to 3 mbps down, 1mbps up) in next few years. And refuse to play the AT&T '4G' game.
You should get a new sim card considering it is 3-4 years old that will affect connectivity to 3g and hspa network..
Boston network shouldn't be a problem.
Samsung Focus At&t USA
I had the same problem when I had an old SIM card in my att fuze when trying to connect to 3g and hspa speed networks...rule of thumb is buy a new SIM when switching to a new phone....it also depends on what network your on...are you at&t?
Samsung Focus At&t USA
Yes, I am currently on Att network. Which I must say was really reliable and fast, up until the last few months...
And I will get a new sim card after work today or early tomorrow. I will let you know if that helps at all.
Thanks peeps 8)

Samsung Focus unlocked I get 3G+ in EU, if that helps. Seemed pretty fast, but I haven't done a speed test, though.
Usually I unlock my phone as soon as I get it home. With a bunch of unknowns with the Focus, I'm waiting it out right now before I do anything
So My phone is still locked 8)
Thanks for the help
I got 3G+ icoon with Rogers ROM, but not with AT&T ROM. And there's tool which can enable 3G+ icon, so I think it's just a registry issue.
3g+
I also get 3G+ with a Rogers sim card in my Focus, same card in the BB only 3G.
Is it possible to check whether this is just graphic, or there is a real difference in d/u speeds? I am using AT&T Focus in Europe.
You can check real speed with speediest.net to differentiate whether its gfx only or real network.

I'd love to hear what results you get if you test out the download/upload speeds. Like others have said you can use speedtest.net or there's a pretty good app called Bandwidth that I use.
