My thoughts after two weeks (for what it's worth) - Galaxy S I9000 General

I have had my Galaxy S for about two weeks now, previously being a very happy HTC Hero owner for about a year. Below is a short list of the things I have learned during this time, some good, some bad.
1.) Firstly, this is a FANTASTIC device; easily the best handset I have ever used. From the Super AMOLED screen that to this day still blows me away every time I pick up the phone, to the amazing 3D performance. No doubt, the Galaxy S is a desirable piece of kit.
2.) Despite this, it is let down by a single CRIPPLING flaw that we all know so well by now... The RFS file system. Make no mistake, without a lagfix installed, the Galaxy S performs at about 50% of its potential. This is true of ALL firmwares, including xxJPK. I've heard people on the forums claiming that JPK doesn't need a lagfix... Well, all I can say to that is that they haven't played around for long enough to notice, or they haven't tried OCLF at all. The difference is like night and day.
3.) So the lagfix makes the Galaxy S a monster; truly a pleasure to use. Why then does Samsung not recognise this potential and fix the problem? Looking at xxJPK and the build-date, I would say it's a pretty safe bet that Samsung are going to be sticking with RFS in the upcoming official Froyo release. That fact alone is a huge disappointment for me, and one which weighs heavily on my mind. Why should we have to rely on 3rd party "fixes" from the community to get the full performance from our phones? All of the current lagfixes have their own negatives. What we NEED is Samsung to come to the party! I wonder whether the Galaxy Tab will suffer from the same problems...
4.) The GPS problems that are well documented on the net have not affected me at all. I have successfully navigated from point A to B using Google Nav (Brut), and I have recorded a 6km trail using My Tracks, all without a single problem. I'm not saying the GPS issue doesn't exist, but if it does, it hasn't affected me yet. If anything, I would concede that the GPS is "weaker" than that of my Hero, but still fine for day to day use.
5.) My biggest concern coming in was the plastic construction of the phone, and Samsung's legendary (at least in my eyes) poor build quality. I'm pleased to report that on the contrary, the phone feels great in-hand, the weight is perfect and build quality is just fine. Now, I am not sure I would WANT to go back to one of the beefier HTC handsets I have coveted for so long.
6.) AllShare + DivX Certification + Hardware video acceleration = WIN! I tell you, the fact that I can lie in bed and stream all my media to this phone wirelessly and watch it on that gorgeous display is worth the price of admission alone.
7.) TouchWiz > Sense. When I had my Hero, I couldn't stand Sense. It felt bloated, and I always preferred a vanilla Google experience. TouchWiz is light enough that it doesn't get in the way of Android, and the overall look and feel is actually better than vanilla Android in my opinion. I'm happy to stick with stock ROMs, provided Samsung keep churning them out (something they haven't done too well so far!).
And yeah, that's about it... Thanks for reading if you got this far. Hopefully my thoughts and opinions echo true for some of you and trigger discussion.

I think you shoulda posted in general ..

May I ask what kind of server you are using? A NAS or some software, if the latter, which exactly? I gave up experimenting with PS3 Media Server a while back, though that is by far the best solution for the namegiving media renderer (and compatible to some others).

Unfortunately, I could not get PS3MS to work either, no matter what I tried. I use it already for streaming to the PS3.
To stream to the phone, I use Media Player 11. It works fine, but obviously only for formats that the phone can play natively (which fortunately is most of them).
Ultimately, I'd like to find a way to get PS3MS to transcode ALL formats for me into something the i9000 recognises.

Transcoding isn't much of a problem, since the alternative I use is to download to the phone and play it natively anyway.
But having to feed WMP the media collection is cumbersome. On PS3MS, I just give it the base folder and then navigate on my PS3. Adding new files on the fly works just fine if they are moved somewhere in that tree. Maybe I am doing something wrong, but I seem to have to manually add each file for WMP and then I have them all mixed up in flat hierarchy, which sucks badly.

Actually, I thought this to be the case as well. WMP seems to scan the mdia folders that you have added. And you don't need to browse using the library, which I agree is a pain.
In AllShare, go to Videos, then scroll down to Folders. From there you have the familiar layout you are used to from PS3MS.

StNickZA, I agree 100% with everything you have said! This should be in General though.
I haven't used AllShare that much, since I have a method that I prefer more:
First grab an app called 'File Expert' off the market. Set up an SMB file share to your movies and eps on your PC using normal windows sharing.
Then when you want something on your phone, just make sure you're on wifi, go to the SMB file share, hold down on the video and select copy. Then go back to local and paste it into the device. It will now say copying, and you can press the home button and go on with other stuff while it copies across.
The main benefit of this is that you don't have to worry about going out of range of wifi signal or anything, and it only takes a couple seconds to get the transfer started. Plus, no worrying about incompatibility or anything with streaming. Could be better, but it works.

If u have a nas like me, or wish to play videos from shared folders use CIFS Manager
No need to copy
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

I just use an HTTP server (HFS, installation is extremely simple) and the Browser to get the files on my phone.
But that is exactly what I want to get rid of, copying the files. Haven't tried CIFS Manager yet, but got that on my list.

True.. buut, another launcher, removing glasslock and taskmanager under touchwiz makes it an even smoother ride imo. )

That's the beauty of DLNA. AllShare works perfectly off Media Player 11, and streaming is flawless. Very happy with it indeed!

Android and Multimedia

It has been a month that I am using Xperia X10 (which was supposed to be a multimedia phone). It might have been a month but I have been following Android for a long time. I was so sure that if not the phone then the OS is going to be really great. Well I was wrong.....
Android does have lots of apps, and lots of them are really handy. But there are some very basic stuffs that it cann't do, like playing divx or Xvid or flv files. It has been quite a while that Samsung Spica came out, it has divx player support. There are so many devs, but noboody seems to bother to copy the divx player from Spica. Most of the videos are of xvid format now days. The only option you have is to buy yxplayer, but why should I buy yxplayer when this was suposed to be built in.
There is no default file browser, you have to download that too (thank god its free). There is no battery percent indicator, unless you download it. These are pretty basic things and they should have been included with the OS.
I am slowly feeling like those winmo lovers who believes that Android is popular because of the hype created by devs. And the devs started it as they can make couple of bucks by making small apps.
Regardless of conspiracy or no conspiracy, why no xvid or divx player??? Even the devs are not working on one

It's like Firefox vs. Opera discussion. I think if installing something is just few simple clicks, then system itself shouldn't contain nearly anything. I would be happy if it wouldn't even contain messaging app, cause I never use it and I can't delete it if I'm not a root.
So, as you see, there are many different "should have"s, not only yours.
I don't know why there are no divx/xvid player. But I personally don't mind, these formats aren't good for mobile devices, so I wouldn't use them anyway

Since Multitasking is the thing android boasts, why does it suck so badly?

Why couldn't it be more like the Palm Pre? I mean even my jailbroken iphone could pull off some multitasking that looked damn close to the pre.
I think the biggest thing I hear about android is it's got real multitasking (which works and I love), but I don't see why they couldn't make it better, or at least better looking. It's based on linux and there are some pretty snazzy graphics out there for that.
Personally, having used the jailbroken multitasking solutions on previous iPhones I didn't find them that great or graceful. The Palm Pre is still the king of multitasking hands down.
Android is working on it. Gingerbread will bring an improved UI with more flashy animations/graphics. For now, holding down the Home button is an acceptable method.

neither do i. i would like a explanation what the evo is not doing.
you compare the pre to be the king of multitasking? windows mobile (touch pro2 which is with me daily in addition to my evo) multitasks beautifully and so does android in my experience with android (hero from launch day and win mo since 2002). just the other day i was on a call , was updating some apps and using tapatalk on a forum. i even had lookout scanning the apps as they were installing.... (4G area). phone did not hiccup... stock non rooted. thats multitasking to me...
I use MultiTask Manager, and it's totally configurable and display the following:
- Running Apps
- Recently closed apps
- Fav Apps
Also you can hide apps that you don't want to see, max number of apps, background and much more.
I have the icon on my main screen
Is free.

It sounds to me like the op is only concerned with how asthetically pleasing multitasking is. The fact that android doesn't have the pretty cards animation that the webos and jailbroken iPhones have means it sucks. That seams silly to me. Wanting nicer animations is fine, but saying that multitasking sucks because of the lack of these animations is silly.

If that is the case, then the OP doesn't understand the design philosophy behind Android multitasking.
1) All apps are loaded into memory from the get go.
2) Task managers are unnecessary, just pick whatever app you want to switch to, and start it to switch to it. Hence the last 6 used apps menu when holding down the home key.
In a sense, Android multitasking is intended to be superior to any other implementation - there's no need to be even thinking about it. It just does its thing.
I like multitasking on Android way better than the Pre. First off it works without me having to worry about what's open, second I never get an error telling me to close apps even though no cards are open. Third it just works on Android. palms system is nowhere near stable yet, and backgrounder on iPad has closed apps so often that multitasking was bad.

I as well fail to see a problem with Android's multitasking abilities.
same....OP please elaborate.
I understand what the OP means... I have BOTH and the Pre DOES BEAT Android in multitasking capabilities.... I'll give u an example
On my Evo, I use Tweetcaster a lot...let's say I need to open up ZumoDrive and share something... I hit home, then open programs then open up ZumoDrive... If I wanna go back to where I was prior (Tweetcaster, looking at a persons profile), I hold the home button...and select Tweetcaster from the recently used apps, and it reopens the app from scratch, forgetting about where I was previously. That's just 1 example (that I happened to think of right now, but there's others) Another would be, try downloading a mp3 from the web browser and playing it...then switch apps... The song stops (unless u play it from the music player)
And the problem with the jab at WebOS saying well, you don't get too many cards errors in Android; well wouldn't exist b/c well for 1, the Evo has a 1GHZ processor and 512MB Ram... Compared to my original Pre (non plus) with much slower CPU; that's a no brainer that the Evo would be able to handle the tasks more effectively, (yet the GPU performance on the Pre is better, go figure)
But, it does sound like the OP was referring more to the way it looks... while, I don't care what it looks like... I just want it to work better.

I agree with the mp3 thing. It's annoying. I think there must be better mp3 players out there.
Try Quickdesk. You won't be disappointed.
Yeah I've experienced that problem with the mp3 player. I've noticed it varies from App to app. The standard music app will stop sometimes, as does Xiialive - but Last.fm app seems to be extremely stable - never had it stop regardless of what I was doing. I don't think there's anything wrong with holding the home button - it works nicely but I am more concerned about how programs function while in the background. As I mentioned it seems to vary from program to program, and the are said to be revamping the standard music program, so I guess we can keep our fingers crossed.
I doubt it will be much work to fix but I agree, they need to step it up a notch in this respect.

But that isn't a good example because that isn't what should happen with the current paradigm. I've left countless programs and come back to exactly the same spot when I return. Something else is going on there. How many programs are you using in between these two? Are you waiting a bunch of time? Maybe Android closes out programs after a certain period of inactivity.

This one confuses me. I can play music with something other than the music player and switch apps without the music stopping no problem.
If I were to offer one easy change to the current UI, it would be to put a little circle or star on the icons next to the programs that are still processing in the recent apps list. That's the only issue I can see. I can't tell which ones on that list are closed and which ones are still open.

How is the Tegra 2 support? Looking to try it out on the Atrix.

And don't let the android market fool ya, it's android requirement is v2.3.3 not v2.3.7.

At least on my Galaxy Tab 10.1, it runs a little slower than I would like at high quality settings(1024 texsize = 15-30fps depending on preset). If you lower the texsize to 512 in settings (which is still pretty sharp), it helps a lot.
I am not sure why it runs slower on the Tegra 2, but I suspect its because the GeForce ULP is not a variant of the PowerVR GPU that most phones use and the OpenGL ES drivers don't like one or two calls I'm making.
I fully intend to get it buttery smooth on my Galaxy Tab 10.1, so you can buy this with confidence. If I am not able to make it 100% within a few weeks, I'll refund you
I plan on working on improving Tegra 2 performance over the next few days, so you should see improvement soon. I have not tried it on an Atrix, so for all I know, it could work better than my tablet.
awesome
so glad to see this finally made it to the market, there are some presets that seem to run smoother in androp, hopefully some shared knowledge will get that sorted out, already told the dev about it anyway, just had to post something cause I'm too much of a noob to figure out how to subscribe to this thread any other way :-/
Awesome I never thought I'd be able to have milkdrop in my pocket from when I started using it in winamp years ago. I'm also on an Atrix and am looking forward to improved Tegra 2 support. One problem though, Market complains that my device isn't compatible with the app. Any idea why? I'm running a CM7 nightly which is up to 2.3.7. Not sure what the other requirements of the manifest file are...

The market is strange. I don't understand how it decides who can install something. It says the Atrix is supported in the developer's console, so I'm not even sure where to look next.
It should be up on the Amazon market soon, although with their one week delay for updates, it will be out of date most of the time.
We released version 3.10 today, mostly centered around startup performance and stability. It helps a lot with the live wallapaper.

Yeah, I will be looking at the presets you poinetd out next week after the holidays. Performance stuff on that level erquires more concentration than I have available right now.
Looks to be running fairly well on the Atrix but seems to slow done a bit when there's a lot of lines drawn on the screen. Also tends to force close every now and then.
Running CM7 FYI.
BTW, is there a way to make this dependent on only media sound output rather than mic input?

We are working on allowing you to select only mic or audio input instead of the aut omode that projectM currently uses. Technically, projectM already supports thi feature, but we don't have a settings screen yet. I know, it sounds stupid. projectM is pretty boring with no sound input at all, so we made auto the defualt and figured we would add the option eventually for people like you who know what is going on. Expect it in a week or so.
As for the FC issue, can you give me any info? I would love to fix it for you.
We just released 3.13 to the Market. 3.11 and 3.12 were big crash fixers, 3.13 not so much.

Unfortuneately, Amazon requires review every time an update is released so this is a very old build at this point. I have submitted a much newer one for review, but they are still reviewing it. Use the Google Market if yo ucan, as this one will always be 3-4 days behind as far as updates go.
Pretty soon 3.15 will be out with support for selecting just one preset in live wallpaper mode.
Bought the app from Android Market. Running Epic 4G Touch stock kernel, unNamed ROM. Now I can feel like xbmc is alive in my pocket. Thank You psperl.

I tested it on my Nook Color and HD2 - a little sluggish @ 1024 texture size , better with 512
Can you add an optional FPS counter? and maybe a limiter also?
Also , any updates on the Widget option?

I am not sure the widget is possible. I've looked pretty hard.
I just completed some performance optimizations that I will be releasing tomorrow after I get home from work. I want to be around (and not asleep or at work) in case it blows up.
projectM already has a limiter set to 30fps. I just asked my co-developer to add a setting to change it. 30fps is the sweet spot because most MilkDrop presets were written with that speed in mind. I don't see why I couldn't add a display as well.
I tried to search more info on using opengl in widgets and it really seems impossible
But , I might found some interesting info - if you can look into it I'll be glad
ICS has introduced a new thing called TextureView
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/view/TextureView.html
I'm not a dev , but can this be used to "stream" the visualizations?
Code:
A TextureView can be used to display a content stream. Such a content stream can for instance be a video or an OpenGL scene. The content stream can come from the application's process as well as a remote process.
TextureView can only be used in a hardware accelerated window. When rendered in software, TextureView will draw nothing.
Also why some visuals looks different on pc? are there missing components?
BTW , love the new music controls! but it needs more work such as configurable/automatic opacity
can you can add the track name appearing on track change like milkdrop? if not a simple text on top would be great

Let's Rant!

Here we can rant about our beautiful new smartphones to hopefully relieve some stress. Sound good? I'll begin.
For starters, I hate the framrate issues that occur too often for a phone with 2GBs of RAM! Clearing a recent app, hitting the home button, or opening up messages always gives me an annoying st-stutt-ter that simply should'nt be ther. I also hate that it is impossible to access your internal storage from a Mac or Linux based computer? Really? I can plug a cheap $10 mp3 device from the 1930's, drag and drop some music and be good to go. Also, what is up with pop-up? pop-out? play?! Why can it only be used (for my knowledge) with videos that are saved onto the phone?! AND how can I put them on the phone with my Mac?! URGH, I can choose between 16, 32, or 64 GBs BUT I still need an SD card to put basic media on my phone? I also don't like how you can't change the shortcuts on the lockscreen, the phone has 8 different main colors between TouchWiz, ICS, and the Nature UX, I originally made this thread on my phone but got a text and tried to go back into Chrome and my text disappeared, AND how they took the AutoText? feature out of TouchWiz (when you can make your phone automatically substitute "sm" into a smiley face or whatever else you want to configure AKA the thing I liked most about TouchWiz). WOW, *takes a deep breath* I feel better. What would you like to rant about?!
P.S. I LOOOOVVVVEEEE my phone though, it just has some slightly annoying kinks (just like every other phone).

I know! This is such a huge letdown. I went into a T-Mobile store today to test it out and was disappointed because I wanted to watch youtube videos while I multitask. In another thread, a person said it is possible use pop-up play with streaming online videos as long as you play with a stock video player.
Have you tried that?

I have not ever been given the choice to what player I would like to use except for once on a facebook video someone uploaded and it DID work but other than that it does not allow me to use this on YouTube videos. :/ maybe someone could help? I can try to mess with YouTube real quick.
Update: nope, still couldn't get it to work and I tried both the mobile sight and the youtube app. Different settings, longclick on the video etc. Oh wells
I love the feel of the phone, the battery life, the WiFi speeds, the display, and the speed, but...
The noise on the headphone jack is distracting and awful. Like, making me wish I had bought the Galaxy Nexus bad.
The Bluetooth range for my headsets appears to be about half that of my Vibrant. I used to be able to leave my phone on the counter and wander from room to room, but now it needs to be in my pocket. (To be fair, I haven't tried it with Power Saving off yet.)
How do I.....
Remove labels under the icons on the home screens?
Remove the page indicator?
Reorder bookmarks and get the reorder to stick in the stock browser?
I want to stick with TouchWiz and stay close to stock for now. I understand other launchers can do what I want, but I don't want to change for now.
Thanks!

I'm not aware of any TouchWiz settings that are user-configurable. (I don't want to discount Samsung making configurable options that could be set with the installation of a configuration program.)
Out of curiosity, what do you like about the TouchWiz launcher that you don't want to give up?

For starters, I hate the framrate issues that occur too often for a phone with 2GBs of RAM! Clearing a recent app, hitting the home button, or opening up messages always gives me an annoying st-stutt-ter that simply should'nt be ther. I haven't tried dragging and dropping mp3 files directly onto the phone yet but I did try the Samsung Kies software and it worked fine.
Anyone notice the phone getting warmer than usual, not hot but just enough to become uncomfortable, i am coming from a skyrocket and did not have the same issue, i thought the s4 was supposed to run cooler however the lower half of the phone seems to get warm doing very light browsing and sometimes doing nothing at all.

Dragging and dropping works fine on a Windows machine. Android uses the long-standardized MTP protocol on USB but it seems little work went into support because only the Zune really used it. (Even on Windows, there are a few quirks.)
It's an awesome protocol for what it does and it fits nicely with Google's new unified partition model (you like getting upgrades for your phone and not managing storage space, right?), but this is the proverbial broken egg to make that nice Android omelet.

My phone gets warm in bright areas almost certainly as a result of the screen power usage. Is the phone plugged in? It gets warm on the lower half while charging, too.

It's kinda silly, but I like the stock clock and weather on the home screen. I also like some of the widgets, especially the calender. I have purchased several alternative in the past that I could use, but the calender is a biggie for me. I have tried many of them and none of them quite hit the mark, for me anyway.
I have tried many launchers. Go Launcher is the only one I have not played with in depth. I may give it a try tonight. I really like ADWex but the lack of a nice calender bothers me. I used smooth calender with it, but I really like the TouchWiz calender.
Always open to ideas. Thanks.
yea most phones get warm when plugged in but this one seems to be getting warm while not on the charger and also while not being strained too much at all. Maybe i got a lemon but id like to hear other owners experiences. I will be exchanging it regardless but when you pay this much stupid issues like that should be resolved before launch.

Oh come on now
He could have gotten it from work for all we know. The point is, there's an issue with the phone and mac compatibility that he pointed out. It's no help to lulz at him for using a nice computer.
I, for one, would be a bit concerned as well.
Your android and your mac dont like each other imagine that

Go to android.com/filetransfer/ and download the app. Open the app, then connect your phone to your mac. Bring down the notification bar and click on the USB connection. Change it to connect as camera and it will work. You'll then have access to the internal filesystem as well as the sd card.

this.
it does annoy me that this phone gets warm so easily.
the flip side to that, is it is very thin towards the bottom, the heat has to escape some type of way tho. It is a powerful core in a very thin body.

[REQUEST] Media ROM for retired EVOs?

Hi all,
I have started this thread in hopes a developer sees the value in it (and our EVOs) and could please dedicate a bit in making some kind of ROM that would not have the calling features enabled, and all the junk removed, so that our EVOS can become bona fide media players... like what an iPod would be.
I used to have my phone as media player when it was in use, but I switched to (this crown jewel!) the Samsung Galaxy S3 and now this is what i use. However, it would be nice to put the EVO back in circulation as a media device...
So far, all the ROMS I see have a lot of features I think would be awesome in this kind of project (DOLBY, xPLOD, Beats, etc) and I always load PowerAmp as a music player (there is NO other compared to it), Chrome for browser and online videos, SwiftKey as keyboard and MX Player as video player.
I don't know how many people would find this useful but I am sure once out there, it would be highly sought after. Me, I just don't have the time to undertake learning how to cook ROMS, what with my Degree almost done, work, family and kid, well, I hardly have time for myself...
Thanks, and if someone DOES come up with something we all like and can use, I will be more than glad to host it and all needed files and mods for it.
Best,
Mord.
Run cm7 nightlies and freeze the stuff you don't need. Most mods are compatible dsp or beats work battery is great. And then is from experience using my og as a gps and music player in my truck constantly

Snap yo..... I actually did this for educational purposes just to see what it would work like, it was incomplete but it worked decent enough. I was just fooling around trying to get familiar with cooking and breaking open apks for themeing and junk. I think I am have to give it another go, but based on my preference for a base, I don't think success will be much. Either way, I'm gonna mess around with it and see what I can do. No promises though.
