I did some searches on google and found people talking about this but didn't find any fixes.
How do you fix the Epic to show the 1X icon instead of 3G while in 1X areas? Can't believe Sprint actually fools people with this! If I am on 1X I want to see it...guess they didn't want people see the holes in the 3G network everywhere.
I'm rooted and have Clockwork installed so, let me know if there's some files to swap.

I was out in the country the weekend before last, I had my Epic and TP2. The TP2 was working on 1x, the Epic had no data connection. The Epic also had no GPS, but that's another issue.

Dunno...1X works fine on mine. Had two Epics and 1 TP2 last night. All worked fine via 1X from the older 1X only Airave.
the blue minimalism theme will show you a 1x icon if you are connected to that or the 3g icon. and it has a percentage in the battery meter. really sweet theme

Yes, the Samsung Airave only supports 1X for Data, Voice, SMS. The Airvana supports EV and 1X for Voice/SMS.
Trying to get mine upgraded, I'm lazy and hate having to remember to flip Wifi off and on when I'm in the house, even with a widget on the screen.
Yes, 3G airave (airvana) has been shipping for a while now. Have one at my parents's house. GPS works well with it too, unlike first-gen.

airvana sounds sweet if i had it i would still use wifi for my data. wireless N is soooo fast about the equivalent of 4g

My cellphone's internet stopped working. I had the 4G status icon and 4 great bars, but the browser, twitter, market, still would not work. After pulling out the battery several times, playing with the settings, etc. I turned 4G off and then all of a sudden the cell worked on 3G.
I showed up at the Sprint store and they told me "....hmmm, you know, the satellites,... you know.... are not working...... mine doesn't work neither...." (sic) It was true. The salesperson's EVO wasn't working either.
OK. they showed me a terminal screen stating that 4G was not working as expected, they were preforming tests.
The problem is that for about an hour I thought my phone had gone bad, until it occurred to me that I should turn 4G off. Then it worked, slow, but it worked. (to tell you the truth, I even went back to factory settings).
I told them that out of courtesy, they should send affected costumers a SMS or email advising about the 4G outage.
I noticed the same thing. Didn't realize it was because of an outage though. What's weird is that 4g service worked great via the hotspot. Just not on the handset. Weird, right?
I don't know what you are talking about....I'm in NYC and 4g is working fine for me ....I am using it right now.
I am on cm7 but that shouldn't make a difference.

yes, that's what I mean. You get the 4G icon and you think everything is fine. But it works only partially, so it's hard to realize that you need to disable 4G in order to get the internet working...

It worked for me again for 30 minutes then the internet (browser) wouldn't work again, so I disabled 4G again. It wasn't working for any of the guys at the Sprint store. So it must be on and off. I also asked them when was this outage going away, they couldn't answer. they just told me if I go to another tower (area) it might work.
It wouldn't turn on for me today around 4. I needed it to refresh my twitter faster so I can get free UFC tix from Dana lol but I didn't get crap

Same here- I work in midtown (east 50s); for the past couple of days, 4G has been intermittent at best (for me, whether on the handset, via wireless tether or via easytether)- but today, it just went out altogether. shows as connected and getting 2 or even 3 bars, but it won't connect to email, browser etc. when using the speednet app, I usually get time outs (999ms ping), but occasionally will go thru and get about 2 down/1 up (vs 5-7 down when working).
I guess I'd be a lot more pissed off about it if I hadn't picked up a Thunderbolt this morning... as much as I like Sprint and my Evo, that damn LTE has got some serious speed to it.

4G is currently working in Inwood (Manhattan) but it wasn't this morning. ....
Rhis morning I had the 4G icon with 4 bars, but the internet would not work.

I was having the same issue in Chicago this morning. Seems to be working as of about 15 mins ago though.
I've been having problems in downtown Columbus, OH for about 12 hours now. Couldn't connect to it last night to update my Facebook (I was at a hockey game). My GPS still worked though, as I'm an avid Foursquare user.
Hope Sprint gets this fixed soon, if I wanted only 3g I'd have stuck with one of the Desire Z roms
Ok now I'm getting the 4g issues. I'm in S.I. and my 4g works but speeds have dropped from close to 1mbps to 200-300kbps....
Did anyone's 4g get fixed in NYC? ....mine is still really slow...its actually just as fast as my horrible 3g speeds
Still having horrible 4g in NYC ...I did a chat support with Sprint ....they told me to do a profile update ....which did not help....then the Rep said they sent some provisioning over the air to my phone which did not help either.....is anyone else still having slow 4g in NYC or is it just me???

So all this talk about a AT&T taking over of Tmobile has brought me to Sprint as my new carrier. Ill be picking up the EVO 4G. Can anyone tell me how there reception is in and around the city "NYC/Queens"? In general is there good 4G reception.

Anyone recently have any issues in NYC with their evos on 4G? I haven't been able to connect for almost a week. I called Sprint yesterday and they said they are having 4G issues. They gave me a $25 credit for my inconvinience. Hell all I want is my coverage back on.
I don't know if I'm in the right place or not but for the past week I've been only seeing 3G on my phone and I live in a 4G/H area. Has anyone else experienced anything like this (very weird) I'm rooted and I am using royalginger 1.6 before I was using CM7.

Have you called T-Mobile to ask if the HPSA+ radios are working correctly on local towers?

For what it's worth, according to TMO's data coverage maps I live solidly in a 4H/HSPA+ service area, yet my phone randomly switches to "H" for about 3 minutes per week. 99% of the time it shows "3G", and my download speeds always shows 3G speeds no matter what the data indicator says. I guess that doesn't help you much, just sayin...

Yes I've called but all they say is that it's weird to them and there is nothing they could do. They already provision my phone twice.

I don't get the H at all anymore I use to
Ive been having this issue for over a month now. I live in dallas and I used to always get "4g". I noticed just right now that my phone was showing the 4g icon although im in Irving where I get horrible service. Idk very weird... Is like something making my phone show 3g in a hspa+ area and then show 4g in a non4g area? Im running the latest royalginger rom with faux latest kernel if it helps

I know that last week, down here (Port St Lucie, FL), they were doing a TON of maintenance to the 4G towers. They supposedly finished, and even though I live in a SOLID 4G-heavy area, I notice a drop to 3G about 40% of the time. Call TMo this evening and they're still doing maintenance. Hopefully I can get back to 100% 4G goodness soon.
From day one, I have had isues with signal strength. It will be 6 bars one second and then no bars the next while in the same spot. Is there yet a solution?

Same here. I get the infinite sms and send failed all the time. Messed up thing is the only rom this doesn't happen to me in is stock. Go figure.

I have the same problem. Mine will go from perfect signal to the damn 1x icon with no bars and be so slow. Even though on in the same spot when I had full signal. It pisses me off.

If you install roam control from the market, it will force your phone to roam and in the process turn your phone into a verizon phone since you will be using there towers It solved all my reception issues, just be sure to check allow data roaming and you most likely will not have another problem with reception. Oh also you must be rooted for it to work

try testing your speed. just because the 3g icon is displayed doesn't mean you're getting it. and the contract between sprint and verizon stipulates that sprint customers roaming on verizons network are restricted to 1x speeds.

Im on wifi most of the time anyways, and when Im not (If I remember) I turn on 4g, so thats probably why I never noticed 3g being any different As far as signal strength, roam control does make you have excellent service for making calls, there is no denying that.
My epic keeps flipping from 3g to 1x and I'm even using amplifier. My touch pro 2 had a app that forced 3g only. I really hope there is a way to do this with the epic 4g. I'm sure there is, but it's way above what I know about phones. If anyone knows of anyway to do this, please let me know.
1x means its roaming. If its switching between 3g and 1x, your phone is trying to find a strong signal.if it keeps going to 1x, you have a weak sprint signal and its roaming onto verizon.i have this problem at work,and it drains the battery quick.i use the app "roam control" to set my phone to roam only to save battery.hope this helps

1x is not roaming. It is what we had before 3g. Older towers.

You can't use 3G while roaming on Verizon towers. The best you can use is 1x.

Not true at all. 01115 and greater prls have 3g roaming on verizon in some states.

so wait when i do this what exactly does this do? because i just did it and in my house i usually only got 3 bars now i have full bars. Does it go off another carriers towers or what?
And also no matter what i still cannot update my prl...Keeps giving me an error...
I remember on the TP2, if you went/forced "EVDO ONLY" you lost voice/text since they operate on 1x don't know if it is the same for the Epic.

Another cool thing the tp1 and mogul did...tp2 didn't have evdo only option... when your forced it to evdo only it would search and connect to 3g networks that were not even in the prl. 3g roaming on vzw way back in the day

You only get those PRLs with a business account, so its true for the average user.
OK well i did the above now when i try to send text mesages or anything on wifi it is failing and won't let me do it. So whats going on?

Discounted accounts, not business accounts. Lots of people take advantage of the 5-20% discount on their Sprint account.

Poor signal quality(not strength)..problems with towers...could be many things.
Thanks guys, I got my msl and did that now it stays on 3g. It is working great. I'm going to try flashing different modems to see which one works the best at my house. Thanks again.

Well I had full bars and I was on wifi at first then took off wifi to go to 3g andit was still failing as soon as I switched it back to both it started working agaain. So I don't know

Just remember your phone needs 1x to receive voice and sms.

Just found out there is a 3G Outage at least in the Silicon Valley (obviously the "upgrades").
Don't know if anyone else is experiencing the same thing on the Shift side or in my area.
Not sure. But I do know that they have been working on the towers in my area big time. I had called last month and asked wht the deal was because my 3G was mega slow. But now I have Crazy 4G. Check the pics. The first one is in the house. The second is at the end of my block.
3g every where I go is the same (about .65 mbps) except in town here my dl speeds have increased to around 1.5mbps! That's considerably better than usual. I don't know why but I like it.

You guys are all getting way better than me... I get .25-.3 MBps on 3G if I'm lucky during the day. I can get almost 3 MBps at 3 am tho lol. I haven't tested it in about a week tho.
I discovered it's not an outage. Just the stupid Photon Q OTA broke 3G (switching network modes). I *****ed out Sprint enough and am moving to the Galaxy Note 2.

The LG Mach has a dual core 1.5 ghz processor and a slide out keyboard
I realized after posting the doubleshot is gsm. :-/ I'll look into the one you mentioned later today.

I don't get bad signal but I get about the same speed, I'm in the same boat with internet connection tho... It sucks.

You could always try changing your PRL. Also you can try calling Sprint, let them know you have a really bad signal. Tell them you drop calls, miss calls, and SMS / MMS. They will almost always offer you an Airwave. If it's really bad they'll let you have it for free.
Right now 3G is horrendous. Although I am on the new eHRPD 3G protocol and not EVDO anymore so "network vision" has rolled out here somewhat. LTE is nice though. I see it everywhere in my area except the exact street I live on (the luck right) I pull anywhere from 12-30mb down

I have called Sprint on their BS and their horrible 3G.
Evo Shift = EVDO Rev A
Photon Q/iPhone5/newer phones = EVDO Rev B
Ping time on Photon Q = 800ms+ latency
Download speed = 0.02Mbps
Evo Shift = ~300ms latency
Download speed = .5Mbps
