Problem with Big exe files - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Kind of weird problem...
Any program I install, if the .exe file is too big (over 4mb I think)...the device freezes when seeing the shortcut/exe file at startup
This freezes happens if I see the shortcut of the exe, or the exe file itself for the first time after softreset
It takes a long time to load (20-30 seconds for 1 shortcut)...after that one time, it's back to normal until I reset it...
My guess
1. Exe file too big? so slow to load? does that even make sense?
2. Shortcut icon size too big? (I checked, shortcut doesn't seem to be too big :S)
I tweaked the file cache to 2mb, and font cache size to 32768...still no difference
Only happens on my htc universal, does not happen on my ipaq 910c
and don't tell me to hard reset, the OS is fine, I'm able to install other stuff and have them work perfectly (also, I did already hardreset, using DOC task28 55aa to make sure, and tried different roms -.-)
The only difference I can see between the programs that have problems and the ones that don't is the size of the .exe files
thanks

successfully change your wm5 splash

Ok all thought id make this into a post all together. I have been reading through lots of forums looks like we can change our boot splash easily but no one has put a tutorial on how to change the windows mobile splash. Ive wanted this as well as some others that ive read well here it is.
Step 1. find an image you want any size
Step 2. convert it to 240x320 ( if you dont it will be cut to 240x320 and you wont see the whole image)
Step 3. connect your wizard through activesync and navigate to your /windows dir
Step 4. open your image in mspaint and save as png with the filename "welcomehead.96.png"
Step 5. copy that image you just renamed to your windows dir on your wizard and its gonna ask you to overwrite and click yes
Step 6. now soft reset and your image should be there.
its easy as that . Have fun
Works only with total commander !

I've just done it thru "My Computer" on my PC after connecting for ActiveSync, just as gizm0 described.
I'm pretty sure that if I had copied welcomehead.96.png to somewhere else on my PDA (eg storage card) and then used either File Explorer or Resco Explorer to overwrite the one in \windows that it would have worked.
Anyway, thanks for the info gizm0
welcomehead.96.png seems to be read-only and when i try to uncheck the read only property, it does not save the changes and stays read-only so i cant delete it neither from the phone nor activesync
ok, was able to c/p it to /windows on the wizard directly. issue resolved.
It's that i say. On the wizard directly, it does not work with file explorer...
Excuse my english.
ok fyi i dont use the original file explorer i used resco file explorer and the attributes set to that file is . hidden, system, read only
and in resco you are able to uncheck those and overwrite
That's not your splash screen. That's your windows logo. Your splash screen(s) (there are 2 in some roms) is the first image you see when you turn your device on (soft reset)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=52564&start=50
^and there is a tutorial on that page on how to change it.
Later; Lew
ok well i know there was quite a bit of people wanting to change that and thx to lewcamino for the boot splash screen changes it works very well
I'm not sure about you guys, but it seems that I tend to be shown the WM5 splash/logo screen more than the ROM (very first one) splash screen.

Question from beginner! How to install programs?

Hi guys. First of all, I'm new to WMO. I've downloaded Gyrator 2, PCMKeyboard, and the TuneUp file. Now, I've transfered these to the phone, both on the SD-card, and in the internal memory. However, when I try to run them, from File Explorer, it opens them in what I think, is Opera. And the screen stays white, nothing happens. This goes for all the files. Can anyone explain me, in an easy way, how you do this?
you could be reading the link in my sig and let me know if it helps...
Thanks - but that didn't help. I actually did it exactly like you wrote it.
For those of you with Gyrator 2 installed, this is what happens to me:
I copy it to the storage card, then open the gyrator file. Files list up, like this:
_setup
00Events
0Gyrator
0Gyrator
And much more. The only file working, is of course the _setup file, which shows with a Opera-ikon, for some reason. So, if I try to run the _setup, a white screen appears, and nothing happens. If I try to run any of the other files, which shows with a Windows-ikon, I get an error, telling me to first open Gyrator 2, then run the file via the program.
For running gyrator you need also Net compact framework 3.5 installed.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2951158
I've installed gyrator in this way:
copied the gyrator install file to storage card
run the file using file explorer
after that I've installed also Net compact framework from the link above in the same way

It does indeed (I'll update the wiki page, cheers for that )
Bungieman - the SD tuneup .cab doesn't need it though - what happens when you try to run that?
Same thing, two files, one with "_setup", which has a Opera - ikon.
If this were PC windows, I'd say that somehow the .cab files had been associated to the wrong program.
Clicking a .cab ought to run it, not open it up and show you what is inside!
There should be no need to run the _setup manually - simply clicking the .cab should take care of all that...
I take it you haven't managed to install anything yet?
The HD is as it arrived in the box?
I had similar issue with another program. I saw opera setup icon, run it and there was only white screen in opera browser...
What I did wrong, was that I unpacked the .cab file on the phone's card - the PC showed me that it is packed file, like .zip or .rar and I extracted it to the phone.
So I had only to copy .cab file to phone's memory card and run it there (using file explorer) without extracting it. Then the program installed succesfully
You do know that you can just use your phones browser, find the file and click on it and then save it direct to your SD card? Much easier and then you just go to file explorer and click on the file and it installs. That is as long as it is a cab file, if its a msi file like the net framework thing is then you need to run it from your pc with ur phone connnected.
The reason why Opera being brought up running the "_setup.xml", is you don't need to extract the contents in the .cab file to begin the installation..
Just copy the .cab file to the SD card and run it thru File Explorer.
If you're not sure if it's a .cab file, open it in WinRAR to see the Address Bar what it shows, or turn on the option in the Windows Explorer for showing file extensions..

Any way to clean system folder for faster acces time?

Is there any tool or guide to clean system folder of X1? My problem is that there is load of files by default, so openning takes about 5-7s. After installing Manila, amount of files is doubled (or even more multiplied) and response to openning system folder goes up to something about 20s. And it seems to me, that many programs acces this folder (its really noticeable on startup time of iGo 8 for example). More files - longer startup/response times and vice versa.
No idea why everything have to be mashed in this folder? Any solution?
if you mean \windows then no
most the files there are located in the rom
and can't be deleted and don't use your storage
For me the SK-Tools do quite a good job in cleaning up a little bit my system.

The loading time is easy solved by flashing with a ROM from itje or similar. My phone was also deadly slow with original ROM
not sure what cause the slowness, but itje's 5.061 rom is a LOT faster than his previous builds in showing the contents of windows folder faster
i wonder what he did?

don't worry this has actually been common with a lot of the x2. virtually you have two option,
1.) use your phone normally eventually the files will return whether that take hours, days or weeks (bad option)
2.) try changing the registry to match this [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\State\Suspend]
"shc1:"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\State\Resuming]
"shc1:"=dword:00000000 (good option)
3.) just install the cab found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=669157&page=2 at the bottom of the page.
4.) if all three doesn't work, well.... at least you tried make sure you back up your device regularly

These are fixes so that it won't happen again ... when it happened to me, I re-installed a program (in my case it was Garmin XT) and the files reappeared ... I think that doing that fixed the file headers on the card ... so if you have something that you already installed on the card, do it again and see if the files reappear ...

Exactly my case!
After memory card corruption I got everything back by installing an app....
i cant change the registry and the cab file dosnt work =(
the cab didn't work even after a soft restart? well you can always try option one and just wait and hope the files come back. the first time this happened to me after two days my stuff just re-appeared and i didn't do anything, so it is possible
So ti install the X2SDfix.cab I just load it on the memory card and then. . .

Put it on memory card, double click and when installing choose phone as install destination.
Done.
Thanks doministry.
Installed it but then had a problem with saving ANY pic or video. SO I deleted the DCIM folder on the MEM card and now everything is ok.
Thinking about adding the accelerometer cab but am afraid because some people reported their icons getting messed up. . .
Ok so i upload the cab file onto the memory card..and how then how am i supposed to install it?? I double clicked on the file but it says 'windows does not recognize file, choose a program to open it'. And i cant open the file from the x2 too =S

So than your file is corrupted or you accidentally renamed this.
Cab files ended .cab after double click just install themselves.
You can't OPEN a .cab file from X2 either.
Check the name or the extension, should be .cab.
If a problem persists download again.

[PROBLEM] ET9IMEDB files look like a directories

Hi guys,
Recently i have noticed tha my t9 words are not working
I found this on xda
Directory("\Windows"):-Directory("ET9IMEDB")
Directory("\Windows\ET9IMEDB"):-File("eT9AsDb.Adb","\Windows\eT9AsDb.Adb")
Directory("\Windows\ET9IMEDB"):-File("eT9Rudb.Rdb","\Windows\eT9Rudb.Rdb")
but when i added it to initflashfiles.txt, all the files look like on the screenshoot
when i simply change a name of \Windows\ET9IMEDB to \Windows\ET9IMEDB_t, and change it back again to ET9IMEDB, files are normal, but after soft reset its the same story
so i did a mort script
Rename ("\Windows\ET9IMEDB\", "\Windows\ET9_temp\")
Rename ("\Windows\ET9_temp\", "\Windows\ET9IMEDB\")
and added it to StartUP folder, it works, but i want to know what is causing it
thanks for help in advance
Billy
ps. I am using leo3.02 IME packages on Topaz Rom
Wow, I'm glad I clicked this. I've run into the same crap many times. My temp fix is the same as yours. I don't use et9, but this has happened to me w/ several apps that I've relocated to windows, like ucweb. My only fix is to get corruptable files/folders oit of windows.
yeah, but you can't get this folder out of windows, cause it must be located there
Have you looked in the .reg file in the package? There may be a key in there that sets the path.
The files would get corrupted every time I would soft reset.
I'll add that for me, I've run into several apps that would give me corrupted files. Usually, it was apps that I'd relocated from \program files into \windows (to save storage space). For instance, Bing would do this to me. The rom files were fine, but the sub-folders would become corrupted after every soft reset if they were in the \windows folder. In particular, the XAML folder would go wonky. The fix was to rename it, then name it back. I'm sure you figured this out the same way I did: you couldn't delete the corrupted files/folders, or copy them, or anything, unless you first renamed them (lucky that worked). When I'd rename the folders, I'd notice that the files inside were no longer wonky. I made an EXT for FpseCE that was relocated to \windows, and all six sub-folders would become corrupted after a soft reset. It was a royal pain to rename them, so that was basically when I decided it wasn't worth the saved storage space to have the apps located in rom, so I moved FpseCE, Bing, and UCWEB (the CDDATA folder would go bad) to program files. The other app that would mess up on me was Weather2go (a today plugin). The Weather.dat file (located in \windows) would go bad for maybe the first 4 or 5 soft resets after a flash, but then it would mysteriously become stable. It was annoying as crap, because the plugin would go blank and not show the weather forecast after a reset. I don't know why, but now it works fine. Perhaps it's because I took the other 3 apps or so out of \windows. The really weird file that would screw up on me was an ID txt file for SK Today Commander. SK software puts an ID text file in windows for all it's paid-for apps. I have maybe 5 of their apps, and the files were fine for all of them except today commander. It would become corrupted at each reset. Now, it doesn't happen any more to me.
I wish I knew why it happens, but I don't. Now, if I'm making a package for a new app, I will test it before flashing, and do several soft resets to make sure that none of the files that might be created by the app are not corrupted after a soft reset. It's been a couple of months since I had the problem.
I looked at the xt9 package I have, and it looks like you can relocate the entire thing to another directory. It will be a pain in the butt, but if you really need it it might be worth a try. There's an installdir key that needs to be changed (from \windows), plus many keys for the path to all the dll's. I don't see a path for the databases, but they will probably move to the new location (assuming you change all the paths).
now i had finished all correctiong all errors for my rom (new packages from Oobe and Huashan) and new manila, i was using topaz ext before, but is it time to change it for a fresh apps
so i will have time to find solution for this, it may be to many files in rom, first i will try to remove some apps, my nhb file has 230mb, so it could cause problems in filesystem, we will see
I doubt it's that, but you never know. My rom is pretty light (only ~2500 files). I tried Task 29, and that didn't do jack squat. Moving things out of \windows was the only thing that worked. I guess maybe moving to osbuilder could help; maybe the module allocation in EVK is causing issues. I've never had S.O.D. before, but I have had this plenty. It's pretty clear that something hinky is going on during boot-up, though.
well i am using osKitchen v1.31beta10, so it's not EVK problem
OsKitchen and EVK are pretty much the same, though, aren't they? They both run platformrebuilder; I'm not sure if they handle modules the same way, but I suspect that they do. Osbuilder is supposed to do a better job of it, but the thought of converting all my packages over makes me want to hurl.
I figured out what is going on with this (sort of). I don't know why you get the corrupted files/directories in \windows, but I know how to avoid it. Files/folders become corrupted after a soft reset when their names are all capital letters. For instance, if I have a folder named \CDDATA in \Windows (or \XAML or \BIOS-those are from Bing or fpsece), then any file inside that folder will become corrupted after a soft reset (except for .lnk files, go figure). So, the key is to just rename the folder with lower case letters. In the case of UCWEB, which used the CDDATA folder, it works just as well with a folder named cddata, except that I can soft reset the device w/o issues. I'm assuming that Bing would work with an \xaml folder, and fpsece would work with all 6 of its sub-folders being named in lower case.
The same thing happens with files: if their name is all capital letters (inc. the extension), then they become corrupted after a soft reset. Renaming them fixes it (same with the folders). Anyway, this is why the OP's files go wonky in the \ET9IMEDB folder.
Like I said, I don't know why it happens. I get it with EVK roms and OSBuilder roms.
Farmer Ted good find, thanks
