I was just wondering if anyone out there knows if there are any apps available that will do two things that I miss from my last Nokia.
The first is an app that says who the caller who is currently calling is so you can tell who it is before you take your phone out of your pocket.
And the second app is one that works with your messages and reads them out to you when you receive them. I used to use this function while driving so I didn't have to read the screen.
I'm not 100% if these exist as the market is so annoying at showing certain apps on certain phones. But if they do then please let me know and offer any suggestions on how to get my UK desire on t-mobile to see it and use it.
Thank you

Not sure if this changes in 2.2, but the stock dialer is horrid compared to HTC, it isn't the worst thing in the world, but I am surprised there aren't more dialers available. I was wondering what people use for a dialer, do you usually download a 3rd party app? Use a dev-made dialer?
Just have not had this so long, I would love to just hear the responses.
Thanks so much in advance (and can we stick this to 2.1? The dialer may change in 2.2 but I have stuck with 2.1)
Dialer in 2.2 is not any better. In fact it logs your sms as call logs so for somone like me who goes through 6000 ( literary) texts a month it becomes annoying. I'm using "diar one". Its fast and has a lot more cutomization options. Give it a shot. It's free on the market.

My rom disables this. Can I ask? What don't you guys like about it?
cd's or tapes?
Hi. What rom r u running? I'm on dk28 and my text logs show up in my call logs. I can switch to missed or dialed calls through the setting but that is not the friendliest way. I liked the stock one but since I went to 2.2 the daler anoyed me a bit.

I am on 2.1 on the Quantum ROM but I am 99% sure it is the stock dialer, maybe colored differently.
What I don't like about it is that when you start typing someone's name in the htc dialer, i.e. you start typing "aro" it will pull up "aron" and other names with "aro" in it or the numbers in it, and you can scroll down through the names.
With this dialer, if you are trying to say call David, you may need to type "DAVID" before it actually shows up because when you hit "D,A,V" you can't scroll through them all, it gives you ONE suggestion.
Maybe it's just personal preference, I just wish I knew how to update the .apk better, a 3rd party sounds a little iffy.
Try FastDialer. It is fast and pretty complex.

On your stock dialer start typinyg D A V then to the right of where u r typing an arrow should appear (righ above the "3 DEF" button) click that arrow and you should have a list of names that contain D A V or the associated numbers. That's assuming yu have other names or numbers that are similar to D A V. Let me know if it worked. Thx.

I like "Dialer One" a lot. It's free on the market and has all the features I expect from a good dialer.
I need beta testers for this Rom/Mod. This Mod should be able to work on nearly any phone.
Google Voice Project Information:
Using VoIP and Google Voice text messaging, allowing free texting + calling over WiFi only. Because WiFi is everywhere now days. So why pay for a phone service, when you are able to obtain WiFi and have free texting + calling. This mod will disable your phone's radio cellular, increasing battery life, includes applications to text and call for free. This mod is for any phone without service, like something you would give your teenager, so they can call and text on without any costs to you. You must be rooted!!
What does this mod do?
Google Voice Application for Calling and texting implemented
Cellular Radio Disabled
Unneeded applications removed, like the old MMS texting app
VoIP System Ready
Many more features to come.

The main direction this mod is just the very thing. Make sure you do have a Google Voice Account. You can get one free at http://google.com/voice Just be sure to load the Google Voice App, There is two applications, one is the modern texting app from the Play Store, and was is an integrated VoIP app, it's from another project from Sipdroid, I am going to update the version of it as well, but after you have your google account setup with your phone, you can simply open the app and click Register PBX Account for your Google Voice, and a registry box will appear for you to setup another account. It's really simple. I hope to make a video for it later on. Also I will also include a boot animation for the phone.
Great idea! I'm definitely trying this on my old HTC Hero. Is it a complete ROM or a patch for a ROM ? Because the zip is kinda small...4mb only.

It's not a compete rom, in order for me to do that, I would have to work on each phone at a time.

What is the actual name of the two apps?

The first app is the text messaging app, created by Google developers, and is already out on the market, at no cost.
The second app is a developer made app from a open source code for Sipdroid, I have modified the application and modified it to integrate it with the mod. So it's under Google Voice as a name.
I went ahead and made adjustments to the mod, it is now once again been reupdated, so if you used it already, just reload the back and do it again. I'm also going to make a uninstaller for this.

So is the text messaging app the Google Voice app then?
Here is something to think about - and it's actually kinda a big deal to me.
One of the STUUUPID things that verizon has done to us is to strip the VOIP settings out of the native dailer. If you use any of the 3rd party ROMS (well - any of the 3rd party ROMS that are not BLUR based) - you get that feature back in the native dailer. So what would be better would be to not install the sipdroid client at all and just use the native dailer to do all this.
Believe it or not that is one of my two HUGE complaints about this phone. If you want the VOIP in the native dailer - you loose HDMI because no 3rd party ROMS support it.
Now, interestingly, my HUGE 2nd complaint is that the lapdocks totally suck and I've never had any success with any of my lapdocks/bionics getting them to actually work. Even doing a factory reset..etc etc etc - the freakn lapdocks just dont freakn work.
I guess at this point (or pretty soon anyway) I'm not going to care because when my sucky verizon contract is up in a couple of months I'm switching carriers to Sprint and getting a Galaxy Note 2. I would get it on verizon - but the stuuuupid verizon folks have locked the bootloader on it and the stuuuupid verizon doesn't have unlimited bandwith and Sprint does.
My experience with VZ has been horrific. My HDMI didn't work so they sent me a 2nd phone. I sent the first one back but they claim they never got it and charged me $600 bucks for it. To top that off the 2nd phone's HDMI doesn't work either - and the friends phone that DOES have a working HDMI still wont work with the lapdock..etc etc etc.
Basiaclly they've screwed me out of about 700 bucks and I still don't have a working unit.
Ill be ur test subject

So this will only work for people that has a Google voice account? And where Google voice is available i.e. USA?

It's not clear for me... Does this replaces sms/dialer with GV compatible ones? or it is a whole ROM by itself (very basic one just for making calls/text)?
Is it country specific ? As I lives in India where is no google voice yet , which I eagerly wanted to try on my nexus 7 which do not have calling facility.

Hello everyone,
I have had the Nexus 4 for a few months and am for the most part happy with it. I am not a power user by any means, but the pure android experience has been very helpful to me. I just started a new career which required a lot of traveling to different locations and scheduling and the calendar and navigation have been like a godsend for me. The notetaking apps like keep are great too. Like having your own personal assistant.
There are few things I still struggle with, particually on the phone end. I tranferred my contacts over from a blackberry, I think google did this automatically. It takes me a while to scroll down to a contact(voice recog does not work great for names) - is there a "better" way to set-up your contacts for easier acess or to enhance voice dialing? I feel it takes me much longer to find a contact than to set the navigation system to a new location. Anyone find a good solution for this?
Thanks,
Rick
Hello... I'm new here too... After using a blackberry I missed the name search here on Nexus.. The stock dialer in my opinion is ****.. Try exdialer..

Start dialing the contact name on the dial pad, this might only be a feature on custom ROMs though. If you drag the list on the right, it should scroll faster, going by letter instead of one contact at a time. This should work on stock.
You can search for a contact. Also you can add favorites for faster access to them

What he said. You can search for a contact in the Phone app by name.
