** UPDATE ** FFC works on the Vibrant!!
LINK: general i9000 disassembly instructions/video here. The camera is popped out at 2:59.
Over on the Vibrant forum here we're working on getting an FFC mod. Hardware _seems_ to be settled, with a cheap source for an i9000 cam here that has both the RFC and FFC, with the RFC working after the mod. No telling if the FFC will ever work yet.
But I noticed today when at Best Buy the Fascinate has a flash. Has anyone taken a Fascinate apart to see if the flash is connected to the RFC? There are pics in the Vibrant thread showing part of the PCB just below the RFC. Not sure where the Fascinate flash sits.
Pics would be great if anyone is willing to do a quick disassembly. This is one of the easiest phone pop-aparts I've ever had.
Thanks.
funny I was just reading that forum... Seems like a pretty slick idea and would be great if it worked with the Fascinate. Another point to consider, if anyone IS willing to start disassembling their Fascinate and puts some pics up, is that if the LED flash is NOT connect to the RFC then the fine folks here on XDA may just figure out how to give the i9000, Vibrant, Captivate and Epic a Flash of their own...
Edit:
I decided to take the plunge in starting this and it looks to be pretty much the same process as the i9000 for removing the back plastic covering but after getting the screws out (I have a couple of screws loose, myself) and tinkering with the darned plastic for 20 minutes I've given up for the night. I managed to add a few cosmetic markings to my phone that will slowly give it character... I need to figure out a better tool for this.
We still need a booting kernal
I know you all in the Fascinate camp are behind us in the Vibrant camp, but we were in your shoes just a month or two ago. Things move fast.
I may get a cousin a Fascinate, and an FFC would seal it.
I don't know about this. I have a hunch this may only work on the vibrant since the bodies of both the i9000 and the vibrant are almost exactly the same. I hope I'm wrong though cause a FFC would be awesome! xD
If anyone could try this out it would be great..
I will give a try tomorrow and post pics after I get home from school. Wish me luck
The Captivate chassis is different and will not accept this simple drop in mod. But we need a Fascinate volunteer to do this to see.
This would be a nice upgrade.....

I've opened it before, it's almost exactly the same as opening the international version. I would recommend never using metal tools (like a screw driver) to pop the plastic...literally all I did was unscrew all of the screws on the back, then ran a fingernail on the side of the phone between the front side [with the screen] and the silver/fake chrome which runs all the way around the phone (there's a crease there and the plastic inside backing and the front are held together with clips).
It should come apart fairly easily. I did not get any farther than that, because I was just looking at the volume rocker; but, the chips and things could just be unplugged and pulled up.
What is this then...???
So I am confused, can anyone shed some light on this for me....
Looking at the front of my Fascinate, it looks as if there is definetly a camera in there. Did Verizon just not enable it and lock it down, or is there not one in there and I am seeing things?
I look at the spot just to the left of the speaker at the top and it looks just like a camera and maybe a flash for that camera?
Anyone want to tell me what it is that I am looking at?
Thanks,
Jacob
You are looking at the proximity censor which turns the screen off whenever you have something on top of it that covers light entry (like being on a call)
its not a camera.
And additionally, we do not have a hole specifically made for FFC, would we have to scratch one on the front to make the camera usable?
Right next to the earpiece you'll see an oval cutout that seems like it has a camera and flash....

As stated above that's just a proximity sensor and light sensor to the left of the speaker. The FFC (if you look at the i9000 or the epic) is to the right.
Any news on this? I have a Vibrant and my GF has a Fascinate.
Maybe I should hop on it as she somehow cracked the screen and we'll be taking it apart to fix that anyways.

I got this refurb. last week and flashed it and started using using it. Well last night i was trying to take a picture of my kids and it would not focus. I thought maybe it was the rom i was using so i switched roms. No dice. It turns out no matter what rom i use the camera takes nothing but extremely blurry pictures. Doesn't matter whether i'm taking a still image or the distance. BLURRY. I know some people aren't happy with the camera in general but this is totally unusable. I even tried switching the quality to 1 megapixel. Same thing. So basically i think the camera on this refurb. is a POS. What im wondering is if Sprint is gunna give me problems when i want to exchange this thing. Otherwise im happy with the refurb, but i have twin two year olds and use the camera a lot.
Just flash it back using the backup I hope you did of the stock ROM. If not, there is a stock ROM RUU floating around here somewhere. Then take it to the Sprint store to have it replaced.
yea, i'm not really worried about returning it to stock, just a little pissed that i get a pre-broken replacement for my broken phone.

dude they did the same thing to me, i got a refurb in a week ago, the refurb screen had dead pixels in it already, so i just used this pixel fixerr app and it seems like it corrected the dead or sticky pixels or whatever their called, but i feel like this phone was jacked up when they sent it to me, also the menu and other keys make this weird ass noise when i press them now, smh
there is a little peice of tape like protection film on the inside of back cover pull it offf.... lol had the same problem... wife found tape and laughed at me.
Hahahaha my mom has the same problem I hope the tape thing is true.

Wow, thanks for reminding me how dumb I felt when I encountered this issue several months back!
I got my refurb, and re-rooted in the parking lot (I didn't want to risk wrecking my truck due to the frustration and rage I feel when I have stock 2.1 Sense on this phone ) I am not much of a picture person, but the few pics I did take looked so bad, and I never could get a barcode to scan no matter how steady I held the phone. I assumed it was related to the fact that we were in the early stages of Froyo development, and as we all know, the Hero camera is one of the last things to get fixed because of the drivers. When most of the bugs got fixed, and I saw no change in quality, I decided it must be faulty hardware. So I drove to Sprint, and used my laptop in their parking lot to run the RUU then I took the back cover off to take out the sd card. Thats when I saw the tape
So my front facing camera has so much crud behind the glass I cant even use it. My phone is in perfect shape and ATT says its not covered under warranty.
Anyone else have this problem?
it happens, if you're comfortable taking apart your phone you can clean it i guess. it's because there isn't a proper guard inside the speaker (you can take a look at it, it's just a hole in the screen; particles of dust slide into it with ease)

Try using compressed air to blow out the dust particles. It usually works.
If you do get it cleaned out an Otterbox or some other case like it will reduce the chance of getting dust in it again. To be completely honest the Atrix's front camera sucks pretty bad, compare it to several other phones ffc side by side in the same light and you will see how horrible it looks. In low light you might as well not even bother, while other phones in low light dont have the same prob. Anytime I vid chat I have to sit in the one chair in the room with a standing lamp and aim it on myself otherwise it looks like ****.

If you use compressed air, make sure the air quality is very good, with no moisture/water in the line.
there was a known issue a while back cant remember when, but if you have a certain type of screen cover was doing is other wise if its under the corning g. glass you will have to find a way to remove it which im assuming is glued on clean the under side and put back on i would assume

i guess i have low standards for a camera, but mine is just fine for my needs. i only use it to have a video call to my family back in Georgia, otherwise i have no use for it. and it works perfectly for that.

Call Motorola. Then you can send it in to them and they fix should fix it. Because you have a 1 year motor warranty, not AT&T warranty.

Agreed..
I purchased a used MyTouch 4G that had been dropped and has a cracked digitizer. While disassembling the phone, I came upon a small, clear plastic piece that was lying loose inside. I've looked at a number of disassembly videos, but I don't see this part showing up in any of the videos. I've attached two photos of the part (on top of the phone battery, for reference). The white part on it is a bit of adhesive.
Can anyone help identify this part and where it belongs in the MyTouch 4G?
that looks like it can probably be some thing that goes over one of the lenses. or maybe not for the mt4g at all but for a device that uses a trackball.

Yeah, I think it looks like something that would involve the camera, flash, or light sensor but I can't see where it would fit.
Anyone seen this part during their 4G disassembly?
I've seen that part. I just took one apart last weekend. The same part was in mine, broken into 3 pieces. I have no idea what it was supposed to be doing.
That sort of looks like a spacer of some kind. Maybe something to do with the proximity sensor or the microphone. Not sure exactly what it's purpose is
It doesn't seem like a critical part, but I'd sure like to know where it goes. The size of it seems to preclude it from being mounted along the edge, and there just isn't enough room around the front camera or light sensor for it to fit.
I wish there was a complete part breakdown for this phone. Anyone have their MT4G apart now that could verify this part?
think its a stabilizer for camera..keeps in check

I looked at a number of web sites, no one sells the part. And looked at repair videos, never saw that part in any of them. I repaired the phone (new digitizer and keypad) and reassembled without the part, everything works great.
Stuck the mystery part in a bag, maybe someday it will find its home

Sorry to bump such an old thread...
I recently replaced the rear camera in my wife's myTouch 4G and came upon this same part (broken in two, mind you). The part is a baffle/diffuser of some sort. It goes behind the white flash/torch LED.
Mystery solved...18+ months later.
Is this normal ?
Is there anyone there with same issue ?
Should I replaced it back ?

Explain
The iris (inner most center) is not in the with the outer circle.
Mine is the same way, I'm not real worried about it. Seems to take pictures well.
Geez... it bothering me..
Holy crap, I didn't notice it until you said something! Now I want to throw my phone away. J/K about the throwing away part, but I really didn't notice that until you started this thread.
They probably couldn't fit the camera module perfectly centered on the main board but figured they could fudge it by centering the housing without too many noticing. Little did they know you'd be buying one! (Ha ha, J/K again...)
haha... coz my S2 is perfectly centered...
Need to buy another one... or spend the money to cure my OCD...hahah
If the pictures you take look good and not off-center, I guess you shouldn't worry about it.
No, it is towards the right side of the circle. It is not centered with the outer circle. I believe this is part of their design (perhaps some technical reason too)
Mine is also more on the right side...?
Any thoughts WHY they do it technically ?
Thanks
Guys, not to worry, this is just a minor parallax viewing problem.
Center your eyes, you should see the camera lens centered now..
I was looking at a demonstration Note on display yesterday, and I thought the lens didn't look quite right. Now I know.
It took fabulous photos though!
is this a joke thread. mine is exact center.

you're not looking hard... I checked 3 units today but all of them have varying off ctr..from .1mm at the best...
so I cant replace mine since all of them are same
mine is centered (lens).
the outer part is not, in fact, it's not even secured as it moves around but never actually blocking the lens, so the camera works fine.
Looking at other camera...Galaxy Tabs etc.. most of them are not exactly centered..
I dont know why I making so much puss on this...hehehe
Really need to fix my OCD..
Mine is centred to the right. Damn, it's going in the bin now!!

I now have a perfectly centered camera...hehehe
Hey! I just replaced a broken screen and it went quite well, aside from the fact that my mic is not really working as it should anymore (it sounds like I am really far away whenever I speak). After the reassembly, I noticed one plastic piece which for the life of me I cannot find a suitable place for. Does anyone know where it is supposed to go?
I've never had that piece loose after replacing my screen (I've gone through 4!!).
The microphone problem seems to be a common problem with screen replacements (judging by xda, other forums and product reviews). I don't know a fix for that, but wanted to let you know it seems to be everyone

Haha ok, no I haven't been able to spot it n any how-to video or anything so I am completely stumped. Does anyone know if the mic problem is fixable? Been googling a bit without result.
Edit: " end of my woes.
I had the same thing as adam in the end. its the little orange silicon bit that shields the microphone. it fits into the fornt cover near the microphone hole. I accidentally threw it away with the old cover and then had the problem. I had to buy a complete new casing in the edn but it is working fine now.
Chris"
Found this in another thread, but... Hmmm, I know of the three orange parts and I have taken good care of them. None of those are clowe to the mic though, or perhaps I am mixing up the mic with somethng else? Oh well, there was somethng else about a rubber part behind the display, perhaps I'll just stick my rubber thingie in there. Yup.

Thank you! I will open it up again tonight and see if I can fix it. Apparently I also managed to cause some problem with the headset since the right earpiece no longer works. Only the left one... Seems like i really shouldnt do these kinds of repair work myself.
Edit: i think I used too much glue a the bottom while fastening the screen and that is why the mic is not working as it should. Just putting it here so others might take t ny consideration if they see this post. Guess the only way to fixit is to buy a new front.
