Holy ****!

Very odd looking

I call shenanigans!

Does Mozilla have plans to produce a mobile phone?
No.
lol
It's a cool concept, but atm, nothing more.

I. Want. This.

Mini usb killed it for me..other than that, no. It won't happen any time soon (atleast in good quality)

I wonder if it will ever see the light of day. Looks frickin crazy though.

Standard equipment for all 2012 flying cars, as well as an accessory option with any super-model design replicant.

That is an invented prototype proof of concept. It is not in development at any company.

With all those toys it must be powered by a flux capacitor.

that would be absolutely fantastic! (i get's a prototype, get off me)
if they ever DID produce that, i would be ALL over it!

its not even a prototype for a prototype they would need to at least partially make one. its just a concept. as in some guy at a computer created a cg rendering of a phone saying you know what would be awesome ... this phone i just made up see look.
so while i am sure it would be an amazing phone (if it actually existed.) that is the point of a concept to come up with the most amazing cool thing you can as a concept. even if they did try to produce this, many features would likely be dropped and many changes would be made

This ish is crazy! Wonder how long it'll take them to actually produce it...

how does it float in mid air like that? can that feature be ported to 2.2 or is it only for gingerbread?
jking

the bluetooth headset / 3D mouse is made for dainty girl hands. so small, men could never use this device properly.
the projector setting is NOT high-def, who would want to go back to old VGA resolutions?!
also the plastic looks cheap and flimsy.
do not want.

LOL
Call me when this thing is actually released ... or even a prototype is made.
And even at that, the Evo will be dead before this thing even sees the light of day. Assuming it does.

I wonder what the battery life on something like that would be.

Review of N97 on gsmarena

Please gimme your thoughts on this...
http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_n97-review-363.php
I don't want n97 to out do the x1...
Should be in off topic section this has nothing to do with XPERIA.
It will most likely outsell the xperia anyway because it's a nokia, any nokia phone sells like hot cakes.
rachet and clank? you into PS3 dude? (way off topic i know, but just had to ask )

Worse screen, processor, memory available, and most of all...it's still using Symbian OS...HOW can it out do an X1?
Those are some good points, but...to answer your question:
Samsung Omnia HD defeats Xperia in terms of hardware specs.
Omnia HD has 3D accelerated processor that is about 600 Megahertz
and it has same amount of RAM as Xperia X1.
The Omnia HD is actually superior to Nokia N97 in every single way except for these 2:
1) Tilt screen
2) No multitouch
3) Speakers are only 80% as loud as the N97
But to be less biased, and truthful ... the symbian OS does not need as much processor power as Windows OS, and the speed of the devices are pretty much very similar. I believe that if N97 had the same processor POWER not speed, than the N97 would be a really really really fast device, like the iphone or as some reviewers have stated on youtube: like the Samsung Omnia HD. N97 is not super fast from what I've seen and heard from Noah @ phonedog.youtube but I know that Xperia X1 isn't actually super fast either.
But on another note, I am so tired of symbian reviewers praising the Symbian OS... sometimes I think reviewers and forumers praise the damn OS simply because of the N-Series line of phone:
1) Before 2009, N-Series were the first to have phones with the best fidelity in stereo speakers,
2) And they used to have the best camera quality as well
3) Without these two, the OS will stand out to be not much better than Windows Molebowl 6.1
For symbian, if you could just customize it it can compete with other OS. Imagine using a hardware that doesn't need a big processor and ram but can level out some big hardwares..

it is sort of a flop....i know a professionaly reviewer at youtube who specializes in Symbian phones and he isn't so hyped up on the N97 anymore. When he reviewed the Samsung Omnia HD, he really liked it except for the lack of multitouch and hardware keyboard.
it's a flop relative to the hype...
but I believe it will not flop in terms of sales.

1st option - you are serious:
I don't. Please check the facts and come back to apologize for being wrong.
2nd option - you are trolling:
Unsuccessful troll is unsuccessfull...
The main problem of N97 is that it just came too late. There was so much hype about it. But nowadays, all his features are not so inovative at least. Camera, screen, cpu, desing ... we've all seen it already, even lots of phones have better display, better camera, faster cpu, better features. Even the customizable home screen, well you can do such things with Samsung's TouchWiz 2.0 for example. Maybe not exactly the same, but more or less. There isn't anything innovative in this phone. If it was on the market 6 months ago, or even more than 6, maybe it will be better, but I can't see it competing with Omnia HD for example, for multimedia, and with TP2 for business. Not that the phone is bad, it's a good phone, but it should be the best phone Nokia have, and it can hardly compete with any rival currently on the market (the top series phones).
I had the chance to play 2 hours with the N97 and have to say its a very nice phone.
Pros:
- Very good build quality. Best slider I've seen on a Nokia phone so far, as well as nice materials.
- Fast OS - faster than any other Symbian 60 phones out there. Not faster than a customized and clean X1 however.
- Nice camera.
- Very good browser rendering - but a little slower than opera 9.5.
Cons:
- The keyboard is quite nice - at least with the english layout. But the german layout is just an epic fail ... The punctuation keys were ridiculously replaced and only reachable with the function key.
- No flick scrolling in menus inside the OS (browser does have it!). Thats another point I couldn't live in every days use.
If you don't want to flash you phone every couple of days in the search of the perfect ROM, you will be pleased with the Symbian 60 OS on the N97. However, if you love customizing your entire OS, stick to WM. There are just much more possibilities in doing it, than on current Symbian versions.
My brother has compared his N95 to the N97 and I can tell you that the volume loudness is almost the same as the Xperia on the N97 and that N97 speakers aren't as good and loud as the N95.
So if you are in for the speakers, wait for the successor of the N97.

Yeah i love my ps3
If there's one thing I don't get with the N97 is why did they abandon the folding design of de E9300,9500,90 for a sliding phone. Especiall with a touch screen.
With the X1 your touchscreen is also part of the cover. That means it gets a lot a abuse. On top of that the phones witches on very (to) easy, often without the owner noticing and all kind of things can get messes up. With a folding design this just doesn't happen.
Why people have gone for sliding phones? It makes no sense to me. Bad design really.
A folding querty keyboard smartphone with a touch screen. Is this too much to ask for?
Well
I had the courtesy of playing with one last night as I'm on holiday in the middle east, I must say, the nice touch screen is refreshing. The angle of (push) to open the slide is a bit awkward and it snaps shut fairly hard but everything else in beautiful. The clarity of the screen, the feel of the keyboard, all compared to my Xperia are amazing, even the touch screen is hyper sensitive, almost as sensitive as the iPhones but without the glass feel. It's a bit bulkier than the Xperia, even with my hard case on, but it's less deep (with the hard case on), th let down for my is Symbian OS and its security, I have grown to like WinMo and the apps etc even if the interface isnt ideal when moving around and trying to do things in bright sunlight and without the sylus.
That being said, all I can say so far is the inital appearance and overall build quality is astonishingly brilliant, as you would expect from nokia, as for overall useability I can't say. (although I had little problem playing with it in a language not my own)
Lol

Bargain of the century. Good job my man

Why I am happy with my Xperia

After having read one too many "I hate my Xperia and wish I had an iPhone" thread I thought I'd make a thread for people to remember why they bought an Xperia.
Does it have it's issues? Absolutely, but it makes up for it (for me at least) in many other ways.
I originally bought the Xperia X1a because it was the ONLY 3G capable WVGA device available for AT&T bands (850Mhz and 1900Mhz). It has a nice feeling keyboard, it has a beautiful display, and it has a very nice hand-feel. Even when I pick it up now it just feels so good in the hand. In fact I haven't had one that felt so good to hold since my old SE W810i. I had the Hermes and Kaiser and both were clunky and unenjoyable to hold.
The Xperia keyboard has a very pleasant keyboard. Its clicks are well defined and the arc slider's spring assist makes it a real joy to slide out. Also my battery life has been superb. Even running 24/7 Push E-mail and a separate IMAP account I still get over 48 hours of power.
Also it came with SPB Mobile Shell for FREE. SPB is, arguably the best Windows Mobile Shell available and it was a sheer joy to use, and while the default SE Panels were rather unimpressive I love that I can switch from Titanium/Sense, to SPB, to PointUI, as well as the absolutely gorgeous Growing Panel with just two presses.
While the processor is unimpressive it has been consistently able to run AVC Video at WVGA resolutions (some ROMs worked better than others, actually).
Sony also added a pretty good Xt9 SIP keyboard (I prefer TouchPal anyway) and with custom ROMS bringing Titanium and Sense to my Xperia I wonder why I would get anything else.
Pros:
1) Very High Res screen (More than double the lowly iPhone)
2) Latest UIs (I got SPB MS 3 from Korean site )
3) Great hand-feel
4) Great 3G performance (if you are on U.S. AT&T Xperia X1a is the best, for now)
5) Long Battery life
For those of you who might say I am glossing over some of the downsides, well sure, but this is a why I am HAPPY with my Xperia thread. (I have found most of the complaints to either be largely due to user error, or what I would call "making mountains out of molehills", but that's just my opinion).
Anyone else feel like their much maligned X1 has been getting unfair treatment feel free to offer some positive feedback for the device that, hopefully, we all still love.
P.S. - I got this idea from flamingsamurai
I am loving this phone right now.
*Opera mini feels as fast as my LEO and 3gs.
*The ability to use panels is a good point too.
*HTC Kaiser and TP2 were nice but chunky phones for me (bricks).
*The screen is just about as wide as the iphones and the device is much smaller.
*The hardware keys come in really handy. The optical sensor is good for menus.
*The keyboard is nice with good width for keys.
*Its a beautifully constructed metallic device.
* I am using vakleryire firestorm leo with htc sense activated in the home menu and it feels like a compact leo.
*No accelerometer but I use left softkey remapped to rotate screen.
* Android and Ubuntu are in deep progress as far as I can see (3 OS in one!).
Many more too.
Swap with 1ghz, increased ram/rom and the 0.2 inch for the screen and you have one of the best devices out there!
I like my X1 because it actually 'feels' like a communication device rather than an MP3 player with a call function. I honestly think the iphone looks and feels really dopey. I also have to agree that it feels great in the hands too. The way the keyboard springs open is just incredibly badass. The weight and the metal fascia just feel so classy. The panels are fun to change up every now and then, and I think it's just cool to have windows on such a tiny device. I thought my itouch felt like I had a little computer on me at all times, but the X1 is even more so. I feel a lot more organized on the X1 than I think I would with an iphone.
I had a hard time choosing between the X1 and iphone, but in the end, I couldn't justify paying the same price for a device (3G) with far less inferior hardware specs than the X1 just because of what it is. I generally hate apple products and didn't want to give in to their supremacy by getting and iphone. Sure apple's touchscreen is awesome, but I didn't feel I needed it for a phone; that's where my itouch comes in.
I found that apple's accelerometer annoying sometimes when I'm using it in weird angles, i.e. lying down in bed. I think I'm just glad to know that my X1 would be vastly superior in outer space than an iphone. You know, space-proof, just in case.
In the end I'm glad I made my decision to get the X1 and keep my itouch for my apple needs, rather than combining everything into one device. I'll use my itouch for video, music, and games; my X1 strictly for communication and productivity.
I actually love my X1 and think that it was the best phone I could get. After learning about the potential physical short comings, I'm going to do my best to baby this phone to make it live forever. If she dies, I'll revive her.
Sony eirccson is a pretty cool guy. eh is better than teh ifone and doesn't afraid of anything...
A message to the OP; when did you purchase your X1? Was it brand new. refurbished, or used?
Anyways, if the device was increased to the scale of having a 3.5 inch screen, I would definitely have kept my device.
Absolutely agree with everything said, especially about the X1 being space proof =D
Also people complain about WM, and I have no problem with it, its perfectly logical, and if you use a rom which you like, then it runs fine. Someday you'll be able to jump ship to android. Anyways I'll always love it, its fun to fiddle around with, rather than be a boring symbian phone, where you have no control.
And wheres the fun in having a phone everyone has?
Great thread Hannigan
I wouldn't call the phone cracking by itself user error. It's true, the phone does have good points, but it doesn't get the basics down.
If I have to keep the phone in a safe vault for it to not crack, what use is it?
I like the optical sensor and having the ability to choose between the optical sensor and physical clicks for directional input. However, I hate the feel of the keyboard.
Finally a thread where people actually enjoy the phone
What I like about the X1:
The Professional look and feel of the phone
Screen size and HD Res.
Modding capabilities and Hacks and the Different UI's you can put on it.
Camera front and Back and video recording
Optical mouse pad
Keyboard
Speed of phone, yes thats right I said Speed.
Wifi
GPS
HD games/PS1, sigh....... I miss Call of Duty 2 but I just couldn't go back to Sh!ty 6.1
And most of all The fact that their very little people that have heard of or seen this phone where i live. Actually I'm the only that owns one I don't know anybody with this phone in Auburn,NY .
@Rydock I'm glad to see your enjoying your X1 so far.
I'm still getting use to my X2 (just got it this week) but over all the more I get use to it the more I love it.
Single greatest reason why I love my X2 is .... Keyboard! =) (I hate typing on my ipod touch, nor do my fingers allow for a smooth scroll on the screen).
My only hope is the 2 up and coming firmwares fixes the little minor issues I have.

I bought mine new on eBay from an Australian retailer selling a Telstra NextG model (it comes unlocked). Only U.S. sources I could find had significantly higher prices for the X1a. I received it in February or so I think? About 1 year old.
Why do you ask about age and status? I presume you had one and are on U.S. AT&T. Were you curious since it is so rare in U.S.?
P.S. - I would prefer a bigger, flush screen. Then again it is still the largest screened phone I have ever had. And for me the physical keyboard is a huge benefit (Had Hermes and Kaiser before so I like them side sliders).
My X1 is still my favourite phone, the modding capabilities are what does it for me.
I like the fact it's my phone, I've customised it to how I want it to work, I can't do that to any other phone I've owned.
The screen is great, it runs smoothly, i can get push email from multiple accounts no problem, I sync my contacts and calendar, vide oplayback is generally good, ther are a few files that is has problems with, but that's pretty rare.
Sound quality is great, shame abut the speaker, but I generally have it on silent and use a bluetooth headset or headphones.
It looks great, the build is solid, it's been dropped countless times now, ther are a few dents, cracks and scratches, but I expect that after the battering it's had over the last months!
I love having a QWERTY, but I wish it was more friendly for single hand use.
I've found myself using titanium over any panels, and things like the wifi router abilities, even torrents, mean i can do anything I want on it.
The X2 with a 1GHz processor would probably be my ideal phone! Just wish that looked more like the X1.
I'm happy to see that there are at least a few of us who are more than satisfied with the Xperia
It's always good to hear some positivity for a change. Thanks for the input, to all of you.
It's been a year since I last used my Xperia regularly. I would like to use it more, because I really enjoy the QWERTY keyboard (it has four rows and a dedicated @ button, etc) and it's a very versatile device. There are some great ROMs out for it now as well: Sense 2.5, Windows Mobile 6.5.3, X2 and what not.
But what keeps me from going back to it is the Xperia's tiny screen, in combination with the high resolution. WVGA is mainly used on 4, 3.7 and 3.5 inch displays, and not on merely 3 inches. In fact, is there even another 3" WVGA device in the world? It looks great, sure, but everything is so petite that it hurts my eyes
I think such a small display also puts a lid on the overall user experience. If the Xperia had a 3.5" display, or even 3.2", I would have used it *a lot* more. Because as pointed out in this thread, it does have plenty of strengths.
Hi all,
in fact I just BOUGHT an X1 afresh!
I'm using an HTC Touch HD with customized ROM as my primary device, and still think that's the best setup for me. The only things that bugged me were the width and the absolute lack of any tactile experience.
So I shopped around ...
In fact I actually ordered a Motorola Milestone: I wanted to see if I liked Android, the reviews are enthusiastic, and it has a hardware keyboard.
Guess what: I sent it back the day it was delivered. (but that's another story)
And so I went back to Windows Mobile.
My new X1 (and in fact it is brand new) has everything that I was looking for. It sits well in your hand, and I mean as a phone it feels just right. I'm quite happy with the keyboard, and I love the rich feel of the slider. And finally: Hardware buttons hooray!
Other than that it's got pretty much everything my Touch HD has, minus the G-sensor (and I can live with that).
So I use the HD for business (because it's lightweight and discreet to carry in a jacket) and for navigation (big screen!) and the X1 for leisure. Btw, the media panel is just amazing in terms of audio output!
All in all I've fully returned to WM thanks to the X1, and I don't see myself migrating to Android, WebOS, iPhone or Symbian any time soon. Windows Phone 7 Series (or whatever it's called) is downright scary in its restrictions, so I'm glad that 6.x will still be around for power users like us.
Bliss.
N.

The Perfect Phone

Lets start a list of all the things we want to change on the DHD then we will mail it to HTC and they will change it. Right?
Here's what I want to change
1. I want the 12mp Camera with xenon flash and Carl Z. lens from the Nokia N8
2. HDMI port
Why would you want > MP?
This is a phone, not a camera. NOT the other way around.
You might eventually want > optical zoom.
Why would you want HDMI when you have DLNA?
As begin, I thought Desire is an Awesome Phone. but still got some concern.
1. I would reckon a dedicated button, for camera or another specific apps.
2. No face detection on the camera apps. even Galaxy S does.
3. havent seen the voice command feature on the specification.
4. no front cam and cannot make video call. It's really SAD for a high end mobile phone.

I think streaming with DLNA is much more comfortable, because there is no cable between tv and smartphone. Think about a 1m HDMI calbe to your 52" tv...

Didnt realize people actually used that... Had it on my four previous phones and never used it once...
But something i would like if i had to change something would have to be a bigger battery and a mini USB instead of a micro USB... But thats about it!
Relistic and changes optical ball better camera
You don't want more MP you want a bigger sensor. This is all the fault of the big camera makers touting MP as the be all and end all to sell cameras.
My SLR is only 10MP and takes phenomenal images because the sensor is much much bigger than any phone on the market.

+1...even 5MPx is enought but with bigger sensor and faster chip...
Id have the audio jack at the top rather than the bottom. Thats about it.
I would say HDMI but the amout of times id acctualy use it is slim to non lol
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
To add to the camera improvements the camera is all about its ability to gather light so id want :-
--Larger scensor sizw
--Better optics (a camera is only as good as its optics
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Only one..
The phone to be in flippin hand!!
Have dual core processor, maybe a tegra 2 or 3...
Have USB 3.0
Have HDMI, yes HDMI!!!, my tv and receiver have loads of them, and it's better to send things over HDMI than over DNLA... consume less battery, it's much faster, doesn't lag (only if your phone lags itself)
Better optics (don't need more Mpx, 5 or 6mpx is enough!!) and maybe optical zoom (digital zoom sucks!!!)
More internal storage (32GB at least!!!)
Maybe support for SDXC
Front Camera, yes we need 3G video calls (not that crap from Apple or ip video calls!!). I don't use it, but we never know when we may need it, in some case of emergency like a theft, kidnapping, natural disaster, etc... it can be very useful in those cases, you never know...
Im not really worried about camera quality... so for me:
- HDMI port (saves money, wouldnt have to buy DLNA adapter for telly)
- AMOLED screen (I no its 'over saturated' but it still looks good )
- To get an official gingerbread update (but then again, the devs here on xda will sort out a ROM for it anyway )
The smartphone makers will never release a phone that has verything, they wouldn`t have anything to release after a few months
For me, i would be happy with a phone that has:
- Se X10i battery (Li-Po, lasts even 4 days with moderate usage)
- SGS Screen (ya! SAMOLED with Gorilla Glass=nice! )
- DHD body (looks nice, no glossy plastic that atracts finger prints like magnet, as my SGS does)
- N8 camera (not because of MPs, but for the large sensor and for the audio quality of videos, i know, the sound is not from the camera )
- iphone 4 audio performance (i don`t believe i said iphone but i got to say it, it has a great sound quality)
That`s about it from what I can think of now.

Personally, I'd want:

- Gorilla Glass!
- HDMI

Well yer your write it never was said that it wouldn't get gingerbread (which might not be 3.0...)
But then again, HTC haven't always been consistent with updates (*cough* HD2 *cough)
I prefer Android OS than Apple IOS, but HTC also prefer sells another Android phone than offering OS upgrade to the sold device. HTC like any company will not pay too much effort to upgrade Android OS to existing sold phone unless Google directly pull out any Android upgrade throughout the air and user has to leave any "SENSE addin" by rooting the HTC phone.

The body looks decent, but I wonder why the camera protrudes so much. It will look like a mini-condom if I end up putting it in my back pocket. That's not good for my ego.
The iPhone audio performance part of your list may be addressed in the DHD. I tried using some of the new audio settings in the new sense on my Desire, but none of them changed anything. I tested this using both UE SuperFi 5vi and Bose Bose in-ear headsets. No change at all so it may be something that's tied to the hardware.
So here's what I would add (btw I agree with most of what other posters have already listed):
Internal *fast* storage. This phone does record and play HD content after all. Having 32G fast internal storage *could* help to reduce a lot of the lag I experience when I start the Music app (as an example) and would help reduce the need to go out and purchase class 6 or better sd cards.
Stock software improvements which reliably use volume + and - as well as ff and rw in the wired headsets.

I'm not sure I follow. Do you mean that HTC doesn't provide updates to their phones or something else? I have a mix-bag experience with HTC on this. My Desire has been updated to 2.2, yet my Wildfire is still 2.1 (it's possible I missed an update, I only use that phone when I go out drinking because I won't care nearly as much about losing it).
I can't tell if you'e complaining about lack of updates in general or if it's the lag in your specific area or with your carrier.

Good job HTC.....Good Job........

Got mine today from 3 (UK) and have to say, thus far, best Android phone ever........
Simple stuff, it's set up with M$ exchange and tasks (a must for me) and the seamless integration with Google+,Facebook and Twitter is brilliant (missed this with every other Android phone).....
Loving the Blink feed.....
Haven't used the camera much yet, however the TV Remote app (Watch) or whatever its called.....easy set up on both TV and SKY and it's a genuine brilliant feature.
So far, well happy and nothing Sammy can throw at their (SG3s)comes close to this....

Better than stock?!
Very nice. Good hearing positive things about blinkfeed. Let us know any other interesting things you find out about.
coming from the og one x
Silver or Black?
I got my silvet one on 3 today. To start with it's the best android smartphone I ever used. Design is awasome and the phone sits very pleasant in my hand. Damn it HTC worked very well on aesthetic of UI.it's so refined detail driven and tuned I am having good times just staring at it.I am detail driven person thats part of my work and I have appreciation and eye for things like this. Battery was around 80% when I got phone it lastet around 9hours on 50% brightness 3g and WiFi combined.Email YouTube browsing music listening an so on. I believe camera softaware could be tweakened more... sometimes highlight details gets overexposed and wide angle lens tends to distort image on the sides the latter I am not sure if possible to correct on the phone but the editing program. Having said that low light shoots are my favourite. Camera does really good job and keeps colour very close to natural. Another good thing is your photos are only a little over 1MB .what a compact size. Dual Speakers are in they own league it sounds stereo and is clrar. Phone is smooth and fast. I like blinkfeed and I think it does a job for me.At the moment I have my FB telling me all new stories. Screen is crisp and clear with natural colour and good viewing angles. Coming from sgs2 I didn't have a problem to navigate through the phone I think it's quiet intuitive. So far so good. I don't regret for a single second I got this phone. If I had a second chance to choose the phone without a doubt I would pick The One.....Enjoy your new phone HTC fellows!
hope all of you that got it today die in a fire

It's okay, their phones would be fine.

Plastic would just melt!

Not only would it melt, it would melt in an unusable gooey blob and look like **** + the fumes would mess up your brain (maybe thats why samsung users like their devices ..)
The One however will be a nice piece of aluminum, that can be remelted and recycled and reborn as a new one

I lol'd, you may have a point, how hot do thsoe phones get? slow burn so you dont realize it? causing brain damage, is the only way someone would want to buy those phones again..
Seeing as I did play with the phone in shops many times, nothing about the experience of this phone comes as a surprise. Its fast, smooth (no lag what so ever), UI is fantastic infact just simply the best, camera is fantastic have only taking one pic, but i took many when I used it in shops, same as video, dual speakers and in headset audio second to none!!! i dont even care about the features of the s3s which is a very good phone btw but certainly not on the Ones level!!! this is just the best phone ever made!!!! forget good job HTC, excellent job HTC, next year just add a memory card slot and much bigger battery to please all those who complain about battery and memory. I was confused as to why they called it the one and orginally thought M7 was better but now having it as my own phone rather than a shop model - it deserves the name ONE!!! coz its number ONE!!

Is the HTC One the end of phone development ? - first impressions ....

Of course not, but as far as design maybe ....
I have been looking for a phone to upgrade from my iPhone 5 for sometime.
I missed the screen size and resolution of my old Galaxy Siii and although the iPhone is very nice there are a number of frustrations. For example having to go home button-next screen-settings-WiFi-off/on just to toggle WiFi is ridiculous, or to not have any browser choices with flash, etc. etc.*
Studying the market it seems it's between the One and the S4. The Sony Z has a few unique features but is not attractive. Other phones like the Motorola HD are nice but not really comparable on features. Once you have seen a 1920 screen you can't really go back.
On paper the S4 has a slight advantage although I applaud HTC for trying to end the pointless pixel war. As a amateur photographer I can say that all mobile phone cameras are [email protected] so why have bigger files which just waste space ?*
However once the phones are in your hand it's another story. The One is just beautiful. It it a phone you really want to just pickup.
I went to buy a S4 and came out with a One, for pretty much the same price.
The S4 is not only plastic fantastic but the design is still stuck in the iPhone 3 groove which Samsung originally copied.
The S4 is a great phone, but for me the One is almost perfect. The screen size and weight, the design, the georgeous screen, the software, the speed.
Sure, nothing is perfect, the One get a bit warm in use, it would be nice to have a SD card slot, a polishing cloth would be nice in the box etc. but this really feels like sniping.
It's difficult to know where phones go from here. Apart from 1tb of flash storage and a 5000mah battery I can't think of anything. I don't need more size, resolution or speed really. I suppose a display port or HDMI would be good with a keyboard and mouse in the box to use as a computer, I mean this is more powerful then most peoples PCs and Macs right ?
I take my hat off to HTC and wish them speedy restoration of their former glory!
Just a correction... It's not as powerful to the current PCs & Macs.
It might be quad core and has almost the same ghz that CPU processors but truth is it's too tiny to be of match to computers. Perhaps the performance of quad cores here is comparable to dual cores of computers right now or might even be single cores. And much more less on the GPU side.

I said the same about upgrading from my HD2 about 3 years ago. There wasn't anything sufficiently BOOM for me to upgrade.
I had WM6.5 and 'Droid on the SD (while Android was still effectively in beta) and the new phones back then were a bit gimmicky compared.
Can't find the post but I said I wouldn't upgrade until 2GHz/2GB RAM/Quad Core/1080p and I didn't.
So, back to your question? Where next?
1TB storage? Nah. 64/128GB will be the new 16/32 more like. With micro SD.
5 working day battery - it'll be about real world longevity rather than tech specs, which will lead to a big row as people don't get 5 days gaming
Where next? Frikkin' lasers! What else can be packed in?

yes and no
most folk have PCs with an Intel 3000 or less for graphics.
you are right about size, which is why a display port and keyboard/mouse would be great

4K Screens, PS3 graphics and flexible screens. Unfortunately, not many companies focus on the battery life which is the sad reality.

Battery tech is the NBT. Has to be.
Otherwise, if they add anything else in to devices, we'll have to be no more than 12 feet from a plug.
I sincerely hope the race for bigger marketing numbers ends at 1080p displays: 1080p is already absolutely 100% pointless on a phone-sized screen. However, in other ways, screen performance has a long way to go: I want something that goes brighter than my HTC One (which still has legility issues in bright sunlight), has less reflection from the screen, has more resistance to damage and scratches, and combines an OLED-like black level with properly calibrated colour accuracy and white point, and no screen-burn. (And a way to calibrate the screen that doesn't require a custom kernel).
More performance is never a bad thing.
2GB of RAM is nowhere near enough, especially with 0.5GB being dedicated video memory. I'm looking forward to 4GB devices.
Mobile GPUs have quite a way to go, too, especially in terms of memory bandwidth: I'd like to see manufacturers experimenting with EDRAM.
Camera sensors could also be massively much better than the sensor on the One (although whether the market would accept that is another story: you'd probably have to make the phone significantly thicker). I'd like Xenon flashes to become more common, too.
Personally I'd like more onboard storage available at a lower price. Phones which have 16, 32 and 64GB models charge a ludicrous premium for the larger capacities.
The lack of USB 3.0 is a problem using OTG storage.
Headphone output, while quite respectable on phones like the One, could still be a lot better.
Probably the single biggest thing that needs improving is battery life. I'm lucky if I get four hours of real-life use out of my One if I'm browsing the web over 3G. Really you need at least twice that.
Dissipating heat will, I think, increasingly become a problem in the future. I can't see a smartphone ever incorporating an audible cooling fan.
HDMI output still has a few issues.
And finally the whole thing needs to become more rugged. Sony's Xperia Z is decidedly undesirable in many other ways, but the water-proof and dust-proof features are great (or at least they would be if they didn't require a compromise in terms of speaker quality).

yes, thats pretty much the whole 9 yards
battery life is the main thing for me and it seems most other people
I am sceptical of camera. physics demands a bigger sensor and it ain't going to happen in the form factor.
most people don't need better quality, judging from alot of DSLR shots I see
a display projector, or holographic display would be nice. then I can show people photographs when I am visiting wihout any other equipment
I'm still waiting for a phone that turns into a plane and flies me to my own desert island id be really happy with that

I'm a little doubtful about putting a projector into a device that's hand-held and uses a touch-screen interface: the picture will wobble around like crazy every time you tap a button.
---------- Post added at 02:02 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:55 PM ----------
There's one very important development that's needed on the software side, incidentally: at the moment mobile web-browsers still don't do a sufficiently good job of parsing desktop-oriented websites. There are a number of issues involved, but one of the more significant ones is that there's no accepted way to emulate moving the mouse cursor to a specific position without actually clicking on something. This means websites that depend on mouse-over events - things like menus that pop up when you move the cursor over a link - never work correctly.
One of the things I had hoped Samsung might do with the GS4 (but, as far as I know, didn't) is use their "air gesture" technology to achieve this: hold your finger close to the screen to move the cursor, and actually touch it to click. A device like the S-Pen could achieve the same thing if it's pressure sensitive: move while pressing lightly to move the cursor, press harder to click. There have been other attempts at this in the past: the original Blackberry Storm, for example, had a touch-screen that was effectively one large physical button, so it could tell whether you were gently tracing your finger over the screen or actually pressing. But I've yet to see a way of doing this that works nicely.

actually that reminds me of another aweful thing about the iphone.
when you are editing online forms, e.g. an ebay advert, the iphone just goes mad.
firstly spelling suggestions go out of the window. it starts making odd suggestions about words you have never heard of.
secondly it does weird additions. so you are typing and it suddenly replaces the last three words with something totally out of context.
apple have improved this. It used to be impossible to even use on web forms, but it stil needs alot more work.
chrome and webkit (and IE on Windows Phone for that matter) are vastly superior in this aspect.
