I don't want n97 to out do the x1...
Should be in off topic section this has nothing to do with XPERIA.
It will most likely outsell the xperia anyway because it's a nokia, any nokia phone sells like hot cakes.

Worse screen, processor, memory available, and most of all...it's still using Symbian OS...HOW can it out do an X1?
Those are some good points, but...to answer your question:
Samsung Omnia HD defeats Xperia in terms of hardware specs.
Omnia HD has 3D accelerated processor that is about 600 Megahertz
and it has same amount of RAM as Xperia X1.
The Omnia HD is actually superior to Nokia N97 in every single way except for these 2:
1) Tilt screen
2) No multitouch
3) Speakers are only 80% as loud as the N97
But to be less biased, and truthful ... the symbian OS does not need as much processor power as Windows OS, and the speed of the devices are pretty much very similar. I believe that if N97 had the same processor POWER not speed, than the N97 would be a really really really fast device, like the iphone or as some reviewers have stated on youtube: like the Samsung Omnia HD. N97 is not super fast from what I've seen and heard from Noah @ phonedog.youtube but I know that Xperia X1 isn't actually super fast either.
But on another note, I am so tired of symbian reviewers praising the Symbian OS... sometimes I think reviewers and forumers praise the damn OS simply because of the N-Series line of phone:
1) Before 2009, N-Series were the first to have phones with the best fidelity in stereo speakers,
2) And they used to have the best camera quality as well
3) Without these two, the OS will stand out to be not much better than Windows Molebowl 6.1
For symbian, if you could just customize it it can compete with other OS. Imagine using a hardware that doesn't need a big processor and ram but can level out some big hardwares..

It's an "IF" issue.....
However, I just read the Engadget review of N97,
and comparing it to the hype&hopes,
it's a FLOP....
IMO of course.

it is sort of a flop....i know a professionaly reviewer at youtube who specializes in Symbian phones and he isn't so hyped up on the N97 anymore. When he reviewed the Samsung Omnia HD, he really liked it except for the lack of multitouch and hardware keyboard.
it's a flop relative to the hype...
but I believe it will not flop in terms of sales.

You may be right, because I always say,
sales is not a simple consequence of quality.
It's a Nokia - a brand with high trust.

1st option - you are serious:
I don't. Please check the facts and come back to apologize for being wrong.
2nd option - you are trolling:
Unsuccessful troll is unsuccessfull...
The main problem of N97 is that it just came too late. There was so much hype about it. But nowadays, all his features are not so inovative at least. Camera, screen, cpu, desing ... we've all seen it already, even lots of phones have better display, better camera, faster cpu, better features. Even the customizable home screen, well you can do such things with Samsung's TouchWiz 2.0 for example. Maybe not exactly the same, but more or less. There isn't anything innovative in this phone. If it was on the market 6 months ago, or even more than 6, maybe it will be better, but I can't see it competing with Omnia HD for example, for multimedia, and with TP2 for business. Not that the phone is bad, it's a good phone, but it should be the best phone Nokia have, and it can hardly compete with any rival currently on the market (the top series phones).
I had the chance to play 2 hours with the N97 and have to say its a very nice phone.
Pros:
- Very good build quality. Best slider I've seen on a Nokia phone so far, as well as nice materials.
- Fast OS - faster than any other Symbian 60 phones out there. Not faster than a customized and clean X1 however.
- Nice camera.
- Very good browser rendering - but a little slower than opera 9.5.
Cons:
- The keyboard is quite nice - at least with the english layout. But the german layout is just an epic fail ... The punctuation keys were ridiculously replaced and only reachable with the function key.
- No flick scrolling in menus inside the OS (browser does have it!). Thats another point I couldn't live in every days use.
If you don't want to flash you phone every couple of days in the search of the perfect ROM, you will be pleased with the Symbian 60 OS on the N97. However, if you love customizing your entire OS, stick to WM. There are just much more possibilities in doing it, than on current Symbian versions.
My brother has compared his N95 to the N97 and I can tell you that the volume loudness is almost the same as the Xperia on the N97 and that N97 speakers aren't as good and loud as the N95.
So if you are in for the speakers, wait for the successor of the N97.

Yeah i love my ps3
If there's one thing I don't get with the N97 is why did they abandon the folding design of de E9300,9500,90 for a sliding phone. Especiall with a touch screen.
With the X1 your touchscreen is also part of the cover. That means it gets a lot a abuse. On top of that the phones witches on very (to) easy, often without the owner noticing and all kind of things can get messes up. With a folding design this just doesn't happen.
Why people have gone for sliding phones? It makes no sense to me. Bad design really.
A folding querty keyboard smartphone with a touch screen. Is this too much to ask for?
Well
I had the courtesy of playing with one last night as I'm on holiday in the middle east, I must say, the nice touch screen is refreshing. The angle of (push) to open the slide is a bit awkward and it snaps shut fairly hard but everything else in beautiful. The clarity of the screen, the feel of the keyboard, all compared to my Xperia are amazing, even the touch screen is hyper sensitive, almost as sensitive as the iPhones but without the glass feel. It's a bit bulkier than the Xperia, even with my hard case on, but it's less deep (with the hard case on), th let down for my is Symbian OS and its security, I have grown to like WinMo and the apps etc even if the interface isnt ideal when moving around and trying to do things in bright sunlight and without the sylus.
That being said, all I can say so far is the inital appearance and overall build quality is astonishingly brilliant, as you would expect from nokia, as for overall useability I can't say. (although I had little problem playing with it in a language not my own)
Lol

Hey everyone,
I own the X1 for quite some time now and I have to say that I am generally very unhappy with my X1. There is no hardware defect but I really hate Windows Mobile and the way the buttons are placed on the X1.
I find it very uncomfortable to place calls because the navigation is very laggy and unresponsive. If I compare it with the Iphone, the whole concept of the X1 is a joke.
I consider buying the X1 a pricy mistake
iPhone = Phone that can use PDA function.
Windows Mobile = PocketPC that can use Phone function.
So... what is your focus.... u choose....
I myself [[[extremely dont like what iPhone is]]] eventhough iPhone is fast and very responsive as you said, it is not for me.
I like something that I can play with and use it in the way I want. Unlike iPhone, "use it the way Apple want". [these are just my personal openion]
In my family it is 3:1, WM still the winner here ^^, my brother love his iPhone and it suit him.
I suggest you sell your X1 and buy a new iPhone, u'll be a lot more happy.
the x1 is a sexy piece of hardware and i love it however the winmo is a joke and whoever thought of using winmo should be sacked.
its so hard to use and everything requires effort. my w960 was superb, quick and easy.
surely se expertise could have created there own ui and made this device just awesome.
i voted for "not happy but theres worse". like i said before the hardware is just perfection but the software just destroys it.
Don't get my wrong people. I am not one of those Idiots that go purchase a WM device and then ***** that it's not what they expected it to be. I know all about WM and I have had 3 different ones in the past.
What I love about windows mobile is the functionality and complexity. You have a lot of software variety and functionality. Also there is lot's of very advanced programms you can find for WM that Iphone could not even run. But when I see the implementation of some of the software that is on the Iphone is get a bit jealous and frustrated. It all looks slick and works very fast. I was hoping that at one point we could run Android on our X1 but It looks like we are lightyears away from that.
There are just SOOO many irregularities in Windows Mobile. It's very unstable and chokes too often
I like my X1 (love it)
There is absolutley things that can be improved.
A new update is comming in a few weeks, X1 support told me today.
Haha it is Micros0ft... so that mean Macrorough.
I agree with u that WM is million years behind iPhone in term of speed and stability.
It is a trade off, iPhone run only 1 user task at a time and has very limited access to system components. The hardware and software are specific made. While WM are more open, user can run multitask, access to every bits of system component and customize it anyway they want(except to make it fast and stable ).
For me, I envy iPhone speed but I see no point why I have to slide between screens while I can do everything in just one small WM screen, why I have to swipe my finger to move to next picture while I can just press one button(imagine hundreds of picture and you will get finger muscles), why I have to use my whole thumb instead of my finger nail tip..... so many why why why ....... haha
Anyway iPhone is a great piece of hardware.
I'm happy with it right now, though I was hoping to get already some official firmware update and more panels but no news from SE :/
are they waiting for WM6.5?
Best phone that I have ever owned. Love it. No problems whit winmo.
More stable it feels to compare my old N73 what was slow and crashing 24/7.
I even think this is easier to use. Qwerty is awesome, screen etc.
There is just lots of things that I love in this phone.
Only thing what I miss is g-sensor, but not so big deal.
Seriously guys, I despise everything apple stands for. Sometimes eventough there might be hard evidence that apple has actually done something well. I still will refuse to every lower myself to the ranks of the fashion based air-headed society and submit to those wannabe stylish pricks. OHHH It's white ITS APPLE ITS NICE. Give me a break.
It's just that I can't stand the ignorance that some apple users live in.
And then when I try to show off with my experia and prove that it is actually better than the Iphone it get's stuck in a million ways and just totally puts me to shame :|
its okay but i dont think it was worth 800 bucks.
iPhone cant event copy a line of text from one application to another.
To compare what is better, u need to compare the same thing and to the same user group.
To compare a phone, iPhone sure better. To compare a PDA the picture is opposite.
I dont think it is a good idea trying to beat iPhone with Xperia or any other WM. not that iPhone is unbeatable but it is depend on people point of view.
Those who love iPhone, they like it that way. For them Xperia will never beat iPhone, no need to try.
I also dont c y u should b ashame. Try comparing a shortgun with a rifle which one is better? which one should be ashame? While the iPhone may like a rifle, fast and stable, WM is like a shortgun, more coverage and versatile but somehow unpredictable. They both have their own pro and con.
Just use what you want -> everyone happy.
800 bucks is way overprice for this piece. Quality and performance wise
I love the phone not too big not too small, it took me awhile to get used to the keyboard after my Hermes, but after that I have no issues with the phone what so ever.
But I love tinkering and changing things thats what makes Windows mobile so good.
It's my first WM.
However it's like my 5th smartphone from SonyEricsson.
And I must also say I love it.
Yes WM has it's glitches and little lags.
Some problems too.
However with FlashLite it's a beast,
browsing, email - very well done.
Actually also very fast in apps.
I don't really tweak it, but some small improvements make it my best smartphone.
Just today compared it's screen to iPhone - first time saw pixels in iPhone's screen! X1 looks like painted......

Every smartphones are overpriced.
Said u can buy a laptop at $200-300, just compare the matherial used.
Most highend phones are consider as lifestyle product which mean they can set unresonable price and customers like us will still buy it.
Look at those brandname women accessories, u sure noticed that they sell the brand not the product, matherial cost compare to price is a big gap. same here.

That depends on what you want to do. Does the Iphone have an RDP client by now? The on screen keyboard is best for people with tiny fingers and the screen resolution is too low for what I want to do. Why couldn't they make the iphone so it could be operated with a pen AND your fingers???
I need a business phone and the iphone is a best a cool looking toy.
I am extremely satisfied with my X1 as it is the best WM device I ever used after using HTC Diamond and Touch Pro.
I will never get a HTC ever in future.
I have used the iPhone and the Xperia, both.
I would agree that the iPhone is fast, sleek and stable, there are lots of frustrations that I had to bear! Firstly, Apple's copyright policies get to the nerves. Then comes the blue tooth fiasco. Then the SMS forwarding head-ache.
Then is the file-sharing nuisance. V-cards are never received. Audio-jack is made ONLY for the iPhone headset. You need to purchase another wire to connect your iPhone to your car audio. Although the battery is good, if there is any problem with the battery, its a big problem!! You can run only one program at a time. Deleting one call/sms is not possible without the extra softwares!
No video recording, if no extra software!
Xperia on the other hand is slow. However, if you soft-reset your device everyday, it works fine without any hang-ups. Multi-tasking is possible. Battery life is pretty good. Sound output is fantastic. Screen resoulution is a dream. Camera is a little shady, but still better when compared to the iPhone. I am thoroughly happy with my X1. I feel the price is pretty right too. Least that the phone becomes a commodity seen in everyone's hand! I'd prefer my phone to be exclusive and not a grocery item!
Its worth the money I put in !! Although I'm not entirely happy with the WinMo, thinking about the iPhone makes me love my x1 even more!
I remember having a Sony Clie' PDA in one pocket and an Ericsson GF768 cellphone in the other, once apon a time.
This is my first smartphone so there's no ground for me to compare it to any of these other units, but this little x1 is a beast in my opinion. All this hardware packed into this fairly compact chassis makes it one hell of a powerful unit. I get all the use of it that I possibly can.
Needless to say, I'm very happy with it.
So what? There are a couple bugs here, a few there. All machines dealing with these high-end technologies are bound to have software problems. I can happily deal with it.
Absolutely satesfied. I love my X1
I also have I Touch HD.
But I love my Xperia more!
unhappy x1 owner
Better screen, lighter, better UI.

no
no
don't think so
? so u mean x1 is better??
no i don't mean that as long as i own a HD and not X1
in some aspects HD is better is some other aspects is X1 that take the lead
for example, i never consider X1 just because it's thikness. i don't need the phisical keyboard because i don't text so much
so better is what is better TO YOU
how about the camera>
Definately Touch HD will be better because of 5MP camera compare to X1 only come with 3MP

nope I dont think so... nearly the same... i compared them before buying my HD and to my mind the X1 is too bullky-to big. (FOR ME! Its my opinion, If you have big pockets, than its no problem!)
But I think you can play games better with yout X1! We dont have hardware buttons!!! :O
But I can read eBooks more comfortable , because the screen is a little bit bigger (but has the same resolution)
The screen makes all the difference, HD got a bigger and easy to use screen, X1 screen is recessed so you might have problems clicking on the screen limits like the X in the corner.
Also the keyboard and hardware keys of the X1 can be easy to use but they might fail after some time of intensive use.

AFAIK, X1 is also manufactured by HTC, but for Sony. I don't recall where I read this, but this is what I have been lead to believe.
For me HD is awesome. Especially after upgrading/changing ROM. Absolutely love the high res, non-recessed screen. My only problem - complete lack of hardware buttons.
And it looks much much better than X1, but that's too subjective...
Internal hardware wise, I don't think it makes much of a difference. I've tried lots of HTC devices (including 200 MHz Omap processer - Charmer), and the only thing that makes a difference is amount of memory so that you can run more applications at the same time without worrying about running out of memory.

that is true, x1 is made by htc
the difference is the software designed by se programmers, some drivers that htc usualy miss, small issues like that
i assume though that there are also some hardware components specificaly requested by se, like metal casing, for instance

X1 better than the HD ?
Personally I don't think so.
If you're someone that texts allot, you'd be happy with the X1 since it has the physical keyboard.
But the HD is lighter, thinner and the TF3D is more user friendly than the standard WM6.1 stuff on the X1.
Though you can change all of that by flashing your device.
The battery of the HD is ok.
I play alot with it and the batterylife can reach like 2 days max.
If I stop playing with it and use it for phoning only, it may reach 3 days.
The screenquality on the HD is the thing that does it for me.
Since its a bigger screen, the experience of watching movies or streaming media is far cooler than you'll ever get on the X1.
Together with the big screen you'll find the 3.5 mm earjack which you can use to plug your favorite audiophone.
Don't know if the X1 has a extention to plug 3.5mm audiophones...
I'd choose for the HD.
X1 is more practical sometimes, but the HD is in my opinion very stylish.
Even more stylish than the Iphone... I think.
Greetings and goodluck

Hmm I've had a few SE phones in recent history. I was very happy with my SE W810i, camera was pretty decent on that.
Upgraded to the K850i and hated the damn thing, especially the camera which while supposed to be 5mp was attrocious. I had so many faults with the model in the end Orange got sick of sending me new ones and upgraded me to the C902. Decent phone but again the camera was nothing special. I personally have found the quality on my HD better than the C902 which is also 5mp. I considered the X1 but have had so many issues with SE of late that i wanted to try something different and i am absolutely loving the HD so far.

I have had my HD for severl months now and it is always failed to impress me (aprt from the gorgeous screen) by far the best HTC I have had were the orbit and XDA exec, both good phones. My only problem with it is that it was hiped to buggery when it was released as a super amazing fast all singing all dancing media phone, it isnt at all, it is a business phone, a slick shiny Iphone-esq one but a business phone nonetheless. it could have been so good, its hardware is outpaces game consoles and the iphone for instance. If it wasnt crippled by winmo and the lack of full 3d and video acceleration it would be the shoulders above the rest. I feel let down by HTC and I am not going to buy one again until they can properly optimise there hardware like Apple have done with the Iphone, you have to give it to Apple, they have squeezed every ounce of juice out of that bady they can, you only need to look at the wealth of app. I would sell my HD tomorrow if the Iphone wasnt so locked down and had a bigger screen, iphone next gen here I come...

Well .. I'm quite disappointed too .. but iPhone just wont cut it for me. For example I require playback of non-converted videos in common formats (avi, mpg, flv). No smartphone can do that well at the moment.
I'm at the moment I'm staying with Xperia and hoping that Palm wont block 3rd part media player development ..
But sure, iPhone, especially the new one, looks great, and everything it can do it does better. Way better.

The panels interface was indeed the most useless thing ever. That's why I uninstalled it. Although you have had some problems with the X1, you'll encounter new ones with the new iPhone. Add to that, you'll be paying a bucketload of money for that new device. Why would you buy a MacBook? Windows mobile =/ Windows.

All in all, personally I prefer the X1 (or any WVGA HTC WM phone) over the iPhone because it's customizable. I like being able to tinker around with it. I also prefer Microsoft's approach (although, I'm aware, they're just as imperfect as any other company) to operating systems.
Then again the iPhone does have much better graphical support, smoother UI etc.
If only Apple and Microsoft would merge
iPhone is for tech illiterate sheep that want to look trendy in front of their equally degenerated friends. Flashy, useless, unproductive toy with features that phones had in 1999............
let us know how you like your iphone.
i was looking and playing with one the other day. it was ok but i like the customization that you can do on the windows mobile. i like the big screen but i didnt like the touch (capacitance?). i like to use my fingernails a bit and it doesnt work on the iphone screen.
The major problem with the iPhone for me is the lack of a hardware keyboard. I can handle a normal phone keypad, prefer a qwerty keyboard but cannot type on a touchscreen. I don't care what some people say, for me, a touchscreen keyboard is not good enough.

Its not just the xperia its self that puts it down - its the lack of a Microsoft Marketplace yet and Windows mobile 6.5 - xperia would be a lot better if Windows Mobile Market place was available and if the scrolling on it was iphone smooth other than that i like my xperia

The major problem with the iPhone for me is the lack of a hardware keyboard. I can handle a normal phone keypad, prefer a qwerty keyboard but cannot type on a touchscreen. I don't care what some people say, for me, a touchscreen keyboard is not good enough.

Same - i used ipod touch for typing for ages but after i used xperia keyboard i never want to use a touchscreen keyboard again!

have You ever had an iphone in Your hand? obviously You are talking nonsense. these days You can do almost every thing on ipod that it's doable on winmo. okay... it is not so customizable, but it's interface is simple and just works. works like a charm. I am keeping xperia only untill september and after that I'll get iphone 3gs or something else, maybe n97 or omnia hd. dunno... it pisses me off that for instance I cannot view videos recorded with my wifes n95 8gb without reencoding. that is just f... silly this days.
why iphone 3gs? well... I went to o2 store yesterday to have a look and I am simply amazed. speed. SPEEED..... it is just that feeling of smootheness of whatever You do on those non wm devices.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QMx6aLGWVU I know, it's not perfect, but try to record something similiar with x1.
please, feel free to give me some reasons why it is worthy to stick with windows mobile except rom flashing and customization of visuals... multitasking is nice, true, but how often You just cannot live without it?? well I can...

Exactly what i want in xperia and the smoothness is the main reason i am drawn to the iphone - if the xperia is just as powerfull as the iphone 3G (if not more) why cant it be as smooth is it to do with the resistive touchscreen????

u say that u cant view videos recorded with an n95 8gb on ur x1 without re-encoding it(i can btw), but how do u intend to do it using an iPhone?
if You are saying that You can view those videos recorded @ 640 x 480 highest quality on n95 8gb smoothly without massive stuttering, then You are lying. period. I never said that I want an iphone to watch my wifes videos, the other thing is that I never said that I hate xperia. as a matter of fact I still like it a lot, but I am bit tired with this all customize & tweak me for weeks stuff just to realise it is still slow.

I guess when you get something like an iPhone it works fine out of the box you dont need to tweak it to get it right which is which is what i dont get from windows mobile devices - why are they not already tweaked to offer the best performance?
simple example - why, oh why those simple tweaks like increasing of glyph and filesystem cache are not factory set for performance??
couldnt agree more with u on the disappointment part, sony ericsson produced one hell of a **** expensive phone.. sometimes im even using my old 1st gen iphone :s
Xperia broken.
Last Saturday my X1 broke. I was at a party and decided to jump over a car gate at an old summerhouse. Thing is, it wasn't steadied at all or fastened in the ground, so it swung with my body, resulting in me landing hard on it and it gave my Xperia a good blow. Now half the screen is dead and the slider part is crooked, and I don't have insurance on it so it'll cost me about 100 - 200 dollars to get it fixed.
That is why I'm getting an iPhone 3GS when it comes to Sweden. I like the seamless Mac experience that just works (and is really great looking) and, actually, the fact that I'm not gonna want to flash it every other day.
Don't get me wrong here, I'm quite the avid customizer of all things techy, and I love playing around with settings and tweaks just to feel like I'm improving my device. Now really. I understand why the people here at XDA like their devices - it's because of the new roms. BUT. It's simply retarded for the company making the phone not to include those optimisations OOTB. I understand that a lot of things is set slower by default to gain battery and ensure a safe phone, but let's face it. An iPhone provides a better experience for ALL customers, not only the ones who know how to tweak their device.
I'd suggest by simple human psychology patterns that people like tweaking their phones because it brings them a satisfactory sense of being special - knowing something not all the owners of a particular thing knows. Though, think about it. It would be kind of nice to be free of the constant urge to flash your phone, all you flashoholics? I sure know that I feel that way. Sort of like being free from a time consuming freedom or wanting a schedule when you have nothing but free time.
That's just my two cents, I won't miss my Xperia much. I'm rather glad it broke (although it was a blow to my economics, but hey).

Yea i started flashing my phone but then one day i realised that the stock ones are just as good really and more stable but your right about the tweaking and such it makes you feel like your phone is faster - Maybe when you start using your iphone you will start to miss and acknowledge the little things that make the xperia really good but we will see

EDIT:
Just for comparative purposes here is their X1 review: http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/Sony-Ericsson-Xperia-X1-Review-review-r_2072.html
Camera is really better than, say HD2. Just see the indoor picture, the floor tiles definition is far better. Outside X2 seems quite nice, better, but not as much (although one is taken in summer other in winter). But then it is sluggish taking pictures... Videos seem better defined as well.
It is a pity the performance is so uneven and that SE never finalizes its ROM. So, other functions seem to lag, and development, updates seem very unreliable. Really considered X2, but I'm about to head to HD2 (despite photo's quality, but, well, much better than my Kaiser)...

Me too. HD2 or LG Expo perhaps next, unless I jump to Android for the top notch Motorola cameras (really don't want to, but...)
The Xperia X2 looks nice, but I won't be going that route. It may sound weird, but as it is not made by HTC I will pass on it. Although the build quality may be questionable with the X1, I am very happy with my X1 and my previous HTC Prophet.
I will be probably jumping to the Telstra HD2 (I am also thinking iPhone or Android as well) however I won't be making my final judgement until the following:
(1) HSPL is able to be applied to the Telstra HD2 so that I can flash it with a generic ROM (I think you need HSPL to do so eh?)
(2) What is announced in February by Microsoft
(3) What Apple announces in June about a new iPhone (if any)
(4) Voice command (dialing) on both the Android and iPhone systems are equal to that of Microsoft Voice Command...great piece of software.
In the mean time, I love my X1i and I have no problems with it. The only thing I am looking to do is to get a NEW Xperia X1a so that I can use the 850 MHz 3G band...only eBay has them, but it's all good (maybe I might be able to get it crazy cheap!!)
Another review, very similar results:
http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_xperia_x2-review-443.php
Let me quote my post from Esato:
"There's a significant difference - sometimes at least - between
user experience and reviews experience.
Reviews are needed but sometimes reality is different plus
the device usually gets updated/improved yet the review stays as it was....
I also read so many good reviews of devices which
turned out to be bad in every day usage.
Also, decisive factor is always user preferences...
X2 solves most of my needs,
We will see if X2 will get any optimising updates.
It's well manufactured and makes great photos what I really like,
plus - observe - they say that all the WM strenghts are there.
In the end I rather need a business than multimedia device,
I mean music is my core but I never watch films...
I also don't think WM 6.5 is much more resources hungry than 6.1.
Yet they just claim it's a bad processor responsible for lags - on what base?!
I have X1 on the same hardware and Flash Lite works fine until the buggy Opera 9.5 crashes,
but videos work fine and content too.
Just an example...
I learned my lesson - as MANY users were complaining how bad X1 was out of the box,
I'm still surprised that my X1 works 13 months now without single update nor tweak
and huge amount of installed software inside.
Flawlessly, fine.
We'll see, I will get it in Feb and see how it goes.
Truly, nothing else is interesting enough - for me - to switch my interest...."
Last paragraph from the GSMArena review:
"We can understand the predicament Sony Ericsson were in.
The original XPERIA X1 is not a device to give up on just like this.
But at some point they realized they needed to bring out an update before it was too late.
And as it was becoming obvious WinMo7 was going to take too long,
they decided to proceed with the XPERIA X2 as we know it."
The company is really relying on X10 now -> Android...
I think what they should do is to have a better sense of CONTINUITY...
Very good points. But reviews are good in the sense that these people who have access to many phones. They can compare performance etc. People like me who have to buy in the dark and can not return phone (in Brazil the phones are too expansive and get here 1 year later if they ever get here, so I buy my phones in trips to the US), need the more comments they can get. Another important point is, they take pictures in similar places and similar conditions so you can compare better photos performance. In this case the X2 performs very well.
I have a Kaiser and would be OK with some lag, etc. I rarely watch videos on my PPC (although with a screen the size of the HD2 it could change a little), so X2 could be fine with that. Other areas will be similar or slightly better than my Kaiser. But then, I bought my Kaiser more than 2 years ago. Do I still want (deserve ) to get these lags??
But now, my main concern is that support and development from SE seems to be soooo erratic for the X2. These delays and never officially released... They can't even update their UK page! It is still "expected Jan 10". From what I saw, WM 6.5.3 seems to be a real good update. Will they give it to us? Too many questions, too much confusion... And this not a 300 bucks machine. If it were I would just buy it and see, but it is not. Thus I'm less and less excited by it, despite its many attractives: hardware keyboard, good camera, size (screen could be a little larger, but it is good as it is), some hardware keys... Pity (for me, of course).

If I were you, I'd seriously think about getting an X1 and saving $400. All-in-all, X1 is a very solid phone. The camera is actually excellent except for low-light indoor conditions, something I don't think the X2 fixes. I flashed williyung's WM 6.5.3 and it's very nice - just like a new WM phone. The lags aren't bad at all. I've had a few repair issues but I guess most phones have that? Otherwise, if you are going to spend $800, get an HD2 or maybe hold out for a phone upgradeable to WM7. When it comes out, bet many of us will be anxious to get it!
Just my random 2 cents!
Hey, thanks. Yeah, I'm 90% going on the route of the HD2. Just coming to terms of lack of HD Keyboard and a little too big size, but...
I actually think the X1 is pretty much the same for me comparing to my Kaiser, just a little bit better in few things. I would keep my good old Kaiser. I think its screen too small, kind of too flashy looking, and I never had any problem whatsoever with my Kaiser and many people report these built problems with the X1... Not for me, but thanks for the tip anyway. Appreciated.
The ONLY alternative I've seen around I'd think of
is HTC Trophy.
HD2 is a very powerful machine.
So sad it's disqualified for me

Man that's a nice device...however HTC is starting to piss me off (although I still love them)
Why can't they make phones like the Kaiser when it comes down to the 3G bands...it's usually 900/2100 and then some variants depending on network request.
What I am looking for is 3G 850/1900/2100, or even 900/1900/2100 (1700 right now, for me that is, is not a priority). Very few HTC devices have it, oh well. Anyways, I am very happy with my X1

Won't the Trophy have a capacitative screen? Otherwise, looks great. Always wondered why no one makes a candybar with a really big screen!
But don't you have to think that HTC will put out a WM7 touch pro3? That would be the one to wait for.

But to be honest - I still think of X2.
Well, I was hesitant like all of you, but in the end got X2 the first day available (about two weeks ago) in our country. It's not such an improvement over X1, but in my opinion it's currently the best device with WM and QWERTY. Only that processor is quite a flaw. However, it's not just bigger screen, much better QWERTY, TV-OUT and all the other known stuff, but also probably the best volume rocker and camera shutter I ever had on a mobile device. Making sharp pictures with X2 is much easier than with X1. I might also mention the battery cover, whose opening is not a problem now.
On the whole, X2 removed all the small shortcomings, which you normally ignore, but when using X1 every day they really become a nuisance. I'm very satisfied, but X2's ROM is still quite slow even though not much buggy, so I'm impatiently awaiting an update. Yeah, not to forget, what sucks the most is the absence of Mass Storage mode for USB to PC, hope new ROM will have this feature...

Absence of Mass storage is a bummer
but than why on one of the reviews - GSMArena or Phonearena
they say it's there?!
the mass storage is a bit annoying. but i installed the active sync program and it can all be accessed from there without too much fuss. i turned off all the automatic sync functions so now it operates very similar to the X1 usb to pc. just click on "explore phone" and click on memory card and thats it. so maybe thats what they used in the reviews.

Looks like no problem really.
However one of them precisely mentioned both ActiveSync and MassStorage...
After having read one too many "I hate my Xperia and wish I had an iPhone" thread I thought I'd make a thread for people to remember why they bought an Xperia.
Does it have it's issues? Absolutely, but it makes up for it (for me at least) in many other ways.
I originally bought the Xperia X1a because it was the ONLY 3G capable WVGA device available for AT&T bands (850Mhz and 1900Mhz). It has a nice feeling keyboard, it has a beautiful display, and it has a very nice hand-feel. Even when I pick it up now it just feels so good in the hand. In fact I haven't had one that felt so good to hold since my old SE W810i. I had the Hermes and Kaiser and both were clunky and unenjoyable to hold.
The Xperia keyboard has a very pleasant keyboard. Its clicks are well defined and the arc slider's spring assist makes it a real joy to slide out. Also my battery life has been superb. Even running 24/7 Push E-mail and a separate IMAP account I still get over 48 hours of power.
Also it came with SPB Mobile Shell for FREE. SPB is, arguably the best Windows Mobile Shell available and it was a sheer joy to use, and while the default SE Panels were rather unimpressive I love that I can switch from Titanium/Sense, to SPB, to PointUI, as well as the absolutely gorgeous Growing Panel with just two presses.
While the processor is unimpressive it has been consistently able to run AVC Video at WVGA resolutions (some ROMs worked better than others, actually).
Sony also added a pretty good Xt9 SIP keyboard (I prefer TouchPal anyway) and with custom ROMS bringing Titanium and Sense to my Xperia I wonder why I would get anything else.
Pros:
1) Very High Res screen (More than double the lowly iPhone)
2) Latest UIs (I got SPB MS 3 from Korean site )
3) Great hand-feel
4) Great 3G performance (if you are on U.S. AT&T Xperia X1a is the best, for now)
5) Long Battery life
For those of you who might say I am glossing over some of the downsides, well sure, but this is a why I am HAPPY with my Xperia thread. (I have found most of the complaints to either be largely due to user error, or what I would call "making mountains out of molehills", but that's just my opinion).
Anyone else feel like their much maligned X1 has been getting unfair treatment feel free to offer some positive feedback for the device that, hopefully, we all still love.
P.S. - I got this idea from flamingsamurai
I am loving this phone right now.
*Opera mini feels as fast as my LEO and 3gs.
*The ability to use panels is a good point too.
*HTC Kaiser and TP2 were nice but chunky phones for me (bricks).
*The screen is just about as wide as the iphones and the device is much smaller.
*The hardware keys come in really handy. The optical sensor is good for menus.
*The keyboard is nice with good width for keys.
*Its a beautifully constructed metallic device.
* I am using vakleryire firestorm leo with htc sense activated in the home menu and it feels like a compact leo.
*No accelerometer but I use left softkey remapped to rotate screen.
* Android and Ubuntu are in deep progress as far as I can see (3 OS in one!).
Many more too.
Swap with 1ghz, increased ram/rom and the 0.2 inch for the screen and you have one of the best devices out there!
I like my X1 because it actually 'feels' like a communication device rather than an MP3 player with a call function. I honestly think the iphone looks and feels really dopey. I also have to agree that it feels great in the hands too. The way the keyboard springs open is just incredibly badass. The weight and the metal fascia just feel so classy. The panels are fun to change up every now and then, and I think it's just cool to have windows on such a tiny device. I thought my itouch felt like I had a little computer on me at all times, but the X1 is even more so. I feel a lot more organized on the X1 than I think I would with an iphone.
I had a hard time choosing between the X1 and iphone, but in the end, I couldn't justify paying the same price for a device (3G) with far less inferior hardware specs than the X1 just because of what it is. I generally hate apple products and didn't want to give in to their supremacy by getting and iphone. Sure apple's touchscreen is awesome, but I didn't feel I needed it for a phone; that's where my itouch comes in.
I found that apple's accelerometer annoying sometimes when I'm using it in weird angles, i.e. lying down in bed. I think I'm just glad to know that my X1 would be vastly superior in outer space than an iphone. You know, space-proof, just in case.
In the end I'm glad I made my decision to get the X1 and keep my itouch for my apple needs, rather than combining everything into one device. I'll use my itouch for video, music, and games; my X1 strictly for communication and productivity.
I actually love my X1 and think that it was the best phone I could get. After learning about the potential physical short comings, I'm going to do my best to baby this phone to make it live forever. If she dies, I'll revive her.
Sony eirccson is a pretty cool guy. eh is better than teh ifone and doesn't afraid of anything...
A message to the OP; when did you purchase your X1? Was it brand new. refurbished, or used?
Anyways, if the device was increased to the scale of having a 3.5 inch screen, I would definitely have kept my device.
Absolutely agree with everything said, especially about the X1 being space proof =D
Also people complain about WM, and I have no problem with it, its perfectly logical, and if you use a rom which you like, then it runs fine. Someday you'll be able to jump ship to android. Anyways I'll always love it, its fun to fiddle around with, rather than be a boring symbian phone, where you have no control.
And wheres the fun in having a phone everyone has?
Great thread Hannigan
I wouldn't call the phone cracking by itself user error. It's true, the phone does have good points, but it doesn't get the basics down.
If I have to keep the phone in a safe vault for it to not crack, what use is it?
I like the optical sensor and having the ability to choose between the optical sensor and physical clicks for directional input. However, I hate the feel of the keyboard.
Finally a thread where people actually enjoy the phone
What I like about the X1:
The Professional look and feel of the phone
Screen size and HD Res.
Modding capabilities and Hacks and the Different UI's you can put on it.
Camera front and Back and video recording
Optical mouse pad
Keyboard
Speed of phone, yes thats right I said Speed.
Wifi
GPS
HD games/PS1, sigh....... I miss Call of Duty 2 but I just couldn't go back to Sh!ty 6.1
And most of all The fact that their very little people that have heard of or seen this phone where i live. Actually I'm the only that owns one I don't know anybody with this phone in Auburn,NY .
@Rydock I'm glad to see your enjoying your X1 so far.
I'm still getting use to my X2 (just got it this week) but over all the more I get use to it the more I love it.
Single greatest reason why I love my X2 is .... Keyboard! =) (I hate typing on my ipod touch, nor do my fingers allow for a smooth scroll on the screen).
My only hope is the 2 up and coming firmwares fixes the little minor issues I have.

A message to the OP; when did you purchase your X1? Was it brand new. refurbished, or used?
Anyways, if the device was increased to the scale of having a 3.5 inch screen, I would definitely have kept my device.

I bought mine new on eBay from an Australian retailer selling a Telstra NextG model (it comes unlocked). Only U.S. sources I could find had significantly higher prices for the X1a. I received it in February or so I think? About 1 year old.
Why do you ask about age and status? I presume you had one and are on U.S. AT&T. Were you curious since it is so rare in U.S.?
P.S. - I would prefer a bigger, flush screen. Then again it is still the largest screened phone I have ever had. And for me the physical keyboard is a huge benefit (Had Hermes and Kaiser before so I like them side sliders).
My X1 is still my favourite phone, the modding capabilities are what does it for me.
I like the fact it's my phone, I've customised it to how I want it to work, I can't do that to any other phone I've owned.
The screen is great, it runs smoothly, i can get push email from multiple accounts no problem, I sync my contacts and calendar, vide oplayback is generally good, ther are a few files that is has problems with, but that's pretty rare.
Sound quality is great, shame abut the speaker, but I generally have it on silent and use a bluetooth headset or headphones.
It looks great, the build is solid, it's been dropped countless times now, ther are a few dents, cracks and scratches, but I expect that after the battering it's had over the last months!
I love having a QWERTY, but I wish it was more friendly for single hand use.
I've found myself using titanium over any panels, and things like the wifi router abilities, even torrents, mean i can do anything I want on it.
The X2 with a 1GHz processor would probably be my ideal phone! Just wish that looked more like the X1.
I'm happy to see that there are at least a few of us who are more than satisfied with the Xperia
It's always good to hear some positivity for a change. Thanks for the input, to all of you.
It's been a year since I last used my Xperia regularly. I would like to use it more, because I really enjoy the QWERTY keyboard (it has four rows and a dedicated @ button, etc) and it's a very versatile device. There are some great ROMs out for it now as well: Sense 2.5, Windows Mobile 6.5.3, X2 and what not.
But what keeps me from going back to it is the Xperia's tiny screen, in combination with the high resolution. WVGA is mainly used on 4, 3.7 and 3.5 inch displays, and not on merely 3 inches. In fact, is there even another 3" WVGA device in the world? It looks great, sure, but everything is so petite that it hurts my eyes
I think such a small display also puts a lid on the overall user experience. If the Xperia had a 3.5" display, or even 3.2", I would have used it *a lot* more. Because as pointed out in this thread, it does have plenty of strengths.
Hi all,
in fact I just BOUGHT an X1 afresh!
I'm using an HTC Touch HD with customized ROM as my primary device, and still think that's the best setup for me. The only things that bugged me were the width and the absolute lack of any tactile experience.
So I shopped around ...
In fact I actually ordered a Motorola Milestone: I wanted to see if I liked Android, the reviews are enthusiastic, and it has a hardware keyboard.
Guess what: I sent it back the day it was delivered. (but that's another story)
And so I went back to Windows Mobile.
My new X1 (and in fact it is brand new) has everything that I was looking for. It sits well in your hand, and I mean as a phone it feels just right. I'm quite happy with the keyboard, and I love the rich feel of the slider. And finally: Hardware buttons hooray!
Other than that it's got pretty much everything my Touch HD has, minus the G-sensor (and I can live with that).
So I use the HD for business (because it's lightweight and discreet to carry in a jacket) and for navigation (big screen!) and the X1 for leisure. Btw, the media panel is just amazing in terms of audio output!
All in all I've fully returned to WM thanks to the X1, and I don't see myself migrating to Android, WebOS, iPhone or Symbian any time soon. Windows Phone 7 Series (or whatever it's called) is downright scary in its restrictions, so I'm glad that 6.x will still be around for power users like us.
Bliss.
