Just wanted to point out that the Desire Z and the T-Mobile G2 are similar, but not identical.
I'm currently considering which one to buy, and as I searched the web looking for comparative info, I collected what I found and created a blog article:
http://grenness.blog.linpro.no/2010/09/27/t-mobile-g2-vs-htc-desire-z/
I would appreciate feedback or corrections!
Thanks,
Christopher
You should change "Memory" and split it between Ram and Rom.
Both are the "HTC Vision", but there are not just 2 but 4 brothers.
The "HTC Vision" includes:
- HTC Desire Z
- T-Mobile G2
- Verizon ADR6325 aka HTC Merge (source)
- HTC Desire Z US NAM (source, source)
Common specs:
- same OS Google Android 2.2
- same CHASSIS 60.4 x 119 x 14.1 mm, 180 g
- same RAM 512MB
- same MEMORY 4GB total memory, but only 1.5GB user accessible for apps
- same SCREEN 3.7" super LCD 480x800
- same CPU 32bit Qualcomm MSM7230, 800MHz Scorpion SoC
- same CAMERA 4.9 MPixels
- same everything else
Differences:
BANDS
- HTC Desire Z: Asia/Europe 3G UMTS 900/2100MHz
- T-Mobile G2: T-Mobile USA UMTS 1700/2100
- HTC Merge Verizon ADR6325: Verizon USA CDMA/EVDO+Asia/Europe UMTS 2100MHz
- HTC Desire Z US (NAM): America/Australia 3G UMTS 850/1900MHz
QWERTY MECHANISM
EDIT: the HTC Merge/Verizon ADR6325 has a standard sliding keyboard instead of the "Z hinge"
Hope this helps

Thanks, I will update the table in the article.
Much appreciated - I noticed the news about the Verizon handset just an hour ago, it went under my radar as I published my article yesterday...

will the htc desire z and G2 be using the same SLCD screen or G2 the amoled
No internal memory difference
Note that beside the Internal Memory Specs of 1.5 GB for the HTC Desire Z you will notice a number 1. This refers you down to the bottom of the specs page where it states: "1. The actual available internal phone storage may differ depending on the software configuration of your phone." Link
I believe the there is no difference in the internal phone storage of the G2 and the Desire Z. I concur that the new HTC Sense 3.0 on the Desire Z probably takes up a lot more space than the stock Android 2.2. Hence the difference in software configuration.

Does that mean you could provide more ram to the OS (as in instead of the 512MB the Z has while the HD has 768MB) you could up both to say 1GB with a software hack?
I really am clueless when it comes to how these modern phone devices allocate memory internally.
Did you mean to start a new thread? Anyway my reply again

Internal phone storage is ROM. RAM is not changeable. I am talking about the Internal phone storage not RAM. I am also talking about the Desire Z and G2 and not the Desire HD.
To add, there are differences in the keyboard button configurations too. Physical layout is the same, but the key mapping is different. Nothing major though.

I have the t-mobile (USA) G2, got it yesterday. When you look at sd card and internal storage the internal storage available is only 1.23 gigs, sd card is 7.6 gigs and the screen is SLCD and looks great, it holds up well even in direct sunlight.
So are you saying that the 4Gigs of ROM is fake/lie ????

Why are you pissed? You got an, by all account, awesome phone several days early.
I got my G2 today..
I currently have a Nexus One and Samsung Vibrant. I like the N1 better because of the trackball..
the G2 has a little trackpad that works well.. So far it is pretty cool.
Has 2.2 on it but no wireless teethering on it.. need a new rom.. PDA net sucks because you have to use a cable.
I am also disappointed about not having my full amount of ROM, gonna call tmobile tomorrow and see what they have to say.
Would suck if some early G2 preorders were sent just rebadged Desire Zs. The Desire Z has 2gb on board, unlike the G2 which has 4gb on paper. However, the DesireZ has an FM radio that the G2 lacks. I would take the FM radio instead of 2gb internal ram.

Anyone have a Desire Z to see how much ROM is left right out of the box? That will answer a lot of questions, but I still think we're only getting 2.1 gigs of internal vs. the 4 we're supposed to get.
Unless HTC has changed the wifi/bluetooth/fm chip they've been using for their past three billion devices, both the G2 and Desire Z are FM capable, just not FM accessible in stock(G2).

Yep, everyone here in oz is talking about this- no places are stocking the Dopod D810 anymore as they cant get it.....
apparently within the next few weeks a new HTC P3600i will be released with more memory and a faster processor......
not sure if this is fiction or not but sounds good- strange though that they would release it here before anywhere else... we always seem to get technology like this about 6-12months after everywhere else (we only got electricity last week! )...... no iphone until late this year.... etc....
personally i think that it is just a rebranding of the current Dopod D810? Anyone from here who has good sources can confirm this?
look at the post halfway down the page here- one guy buying a heap from 3 has been told of the P3600i....:
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=658349&p=-1#bottom
Personally I think it's just a rebranding ... cause the latest official Dopod WM6 ROM (we all jumped on ) states "HTC_P3600i" in the 'About' screen...
Or....in the case of a real P3600i, this would explain why there are some issues with this Dopod ROM on a regular P3600...
Hmz..
It's true
HTC is updating the Trinity with a 500MHz processor and larger memory. Also known as CHT9110 (our P3600 is CHT9100) in Taiwan and offered for about 20% price increase.
Why would they do this when HTC is unveiling a few new phones in a few months? To me the Polaris is the phone to get.....

I don't see a 3G small (i.e. without keyboard) phone with GPS in the HTC roadmap so maybe there's room for an improved P3600.
this will be my next phone if htc release it in europe.

Huh? The Polaris is the same exact phone as the 3300 but with 3G. It has a 2.8" screen, not a 3.5" screen, that was a typo. I have spec screen shots of the Polaris and it looks great.
Look at my ActiveSync, one of the choices is HTC P3600i
after flashing my trinity w/ Dopod's official WM6 ROM, activesync detects it as a P3600i already
it seem soo pc'ish to be willing to replace a device to get 100Mhz more
battery life is more importent
more so if one like to be online with messenger with 3g while on the move
i dont see much real world change in that
polaris seems like a pretty cool device imho
Yep it may be rebranded as HTC P3600i or Dopod810x anyway from what I have seen so far in some Asian websites (HTC P3600 = CHT9100 and the HTC P3600i = CHT9110)
the new specifications may be:
Windows Mobile 6 Professional
Samsung 500Mhz CPU
256MB ROM/64MB RAM
All the rest should remain the same as the previous model.
I can't say that it is 100% sure but you can still have a look at:
http://mobile.163.com/07/0718/10/3JM8DP840011179O.html
below all the pictures.
One big question remain, how much will this new model cost?

its 64RAM see here http://203.84.199.31/language/trans...cts/pda_CHT9110/pda_CHT9110_fea.html&lp=zt_en
it's still a preproducton.. maybe they will change 128 Mb
128M of RAM would definitely cause battery to drainer much quicker - unless they upgrade the battery too.
P3600i available in Australia in one week.
It really does exist!
Here is the preordering page at a shop here in town.
The price is $1099 AUD.

HTC P3600i in latest "3"cattledog!
Yep guyz and guyesses. The latest 3 Three cattledog inside back cover shows and lists the HTC P3600i available on a $49 plan for $32 per month. Now that's $4 less than the Dopod D810 albeit on a $29 plan.
Organizer world have it listed also at $1099 due in about 10 days or so.
Extra ram and 500 processor and my favorite a built in GPS receiver.
Just tought you would like to know that it really is happening!

This is your opinion. I have used the Kaiser and as great of a phone it is, IT IS NOT FOR EVERYONE.
I dislike slide out keyboards as I have had 2 phones like this and got rid of them both. I also dislike heavy phones and this phone is one of the heaviest phones I have held in a while.
Anyway, why would you post about the Kaiser in this thread? If anything, I would be waiting for the Polaris personally, not the Kaiser.

While the N1 has a healthy 512mb of memory, the Desire has 576mb. I was thinking, if everything really is the same hardware (the N1 also has a FM radio on its chip too, its just not used for whatever reason..) then maybe the N1 has that memory locked off somewhere. Or something. I was just thinking, because that would be a questionable move by HTC to add ONLY 60mb...your thoughts?

On another note this might be general discussion
I figured they tacked on that little bit more of RAM so that their resource whore can run faster on the desire than the nexus.

ya i would think they did it because HTC Sense requires a lil more resources than the stock UI, ie RAM. but maybe it is locked off somewhere. if it is....we will find it!
Is it even really confirmed that this particular development rom has it enabled? It might not even be in the build.

I don't think they gave the Desire extra RAM to run Sense. Why? Well right now on my N1 I'm running the Sense Alpha 3 rom from Modaco and I have 385MB total and only 68% of it is being used and the phone is still very smooth. I really don't know why they added extra RAM but it doesn't really mean much for Android.
On the MWC i have seen that the Desire has only 80-65 MB free. On my Nexus i have 120 (will on the stocked rom )
The Nexus runs faster than the Desire. And i think google will support (with new updates) the Nexus longer than htc it will do.

And I got around 300MB free when killin some more tasks (on CM 5.0.3)
I think google is brilliant if they have done that... this way they can have 2 "Performance enhancing" updates without really having to do anything but release a new kernal, which they should already have the code for.
I doubt it has anything to do with Sense UI.
Why? :
- The HTC Legend runs the same version of Android with Sense UI fine with only 384MB Ram
- The Hero also runs Sense UI fine with 192MB Ram

Really, did you get test a commercially available HTC Desire? They're both similar and equal phones, no point trying to justify your choice, Nexus is a brilliant phone, so is the Desire.
One thing, Nexus does have is faster updates. It is after all a PROPER GooglePhone. HTC have yet to update their old Flagship HTC Hero. Other than that Nexus and Desire are similar except for a little bit more ram, FM radio and removal of dual mic. (Sense UI may be a difference, but do the great devs on XDA, it's isn't really an advantage for Desire, although at most, it may not work 100% compared to the official Desire Sense UI, a small fixable fault).
Desire has 80-65MB Free? Wut? I think you saw that wrong, Lol.
The site tells the tale. Here is the canadian HTC site with the specs for the Desire Z. ROM shows 4GB:

Here is the UK HTC site for the Desire Z. ROM says 1.5GB

And G2 says 4GB too, yet most of them get 1.5GB :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=796421&highlight=1.5GB
Look again. There's more than just the ROM that's different from other specs. we've seen.
The battery is 1230mah
The weight is 164g instead of the 180g we've seen everywhere else.
Weird.
I will be very very happy if it has 4 GB of ROM. (CDN Version).
@LickTheEnvelope: but very, very improbable. T-Mobile G2 has 1.5GB for you as a user, period :
http://www.facebook.com/TMobile?v=wall&story_fbid=107096669355183&ref=mf
The G2 includes 4GB of internal memory, of which a portion is accessible for downloading applications from the Android Market and a portion is allocated for both the operating system and preloaded applications.

Same applies for Desire Z and same will apply for Desire Z NAM. There is no 1.5GB and 4GB variant, all have 1.5GB user and 4GB total internal flash memory. HTC states the real, usable size of memory, T-Mobile states the total amount of memory.

You would likely be correct. Bell's spec sheet lists their desire Z at 1.5 GB. Oh well.
That is so deceiving cause the Desire HD and the Desire Z (UK version) both say 1.5GB and the Desire Z (CA) and G2 (T-Mobile) say 4GB. That is WAY off from 1.5GB. What the hell do they need 2.5GB for OS and pre-installed apps for?!? That's CRAZY!!
Good question, but i have no answer.
There's a massive ongoing discussion on the whole 1.5 GB vs 4 GB thing over on the G2 forum. So far, it's been shown (via dismantling a G2) that it really does have a 4 GB chip in there, but only 1.5 GB seems to be accessible - so far, no-one can explain why.
This has been extensively discussed previously
Search for the "HTC vision" variants thread
They all have 4GB memory but "only" 1.5GB is user accessible for apps,
which I still think is enough,
more than plenty when considering the other phones in the market have less than half that ammount, and the number of apps you could ever possbly install into your phone
To make this clear again:
Some operators are marketing it as "4GB" and some are saying "1.5GB", but thats THE SAME because in the end ALL HTC VISION VARIANTS (T-mobile G2, HTC Desire Z, Desire Z NAM-US, Verizon's Merge...) have memory of 4 GB/1.5GB accessible.
Id Say topic is clear and edification by grab. This thread should be closed to keep these clean
There are several existing threads on this - closed
Just a random thought..
Does anything think that maybe the reason that only 1.5gb out of 4 is available on the Desire Z could be due to the TomTom maps that are preloaded?
And if it were that, I wonder if you can delete'em..

If you mean the pre-cached maps from HTC Locations, then you could probably remove everything through a loading a custom ROM.
But it is highly unlikely that this is the reason why the Desire Z has 1.5Gb instead of the G-2's 4Gb. What is probably the case is that since T-Mobile is the launch partner of the Vision, HTC has given T-Mobile an exclusive increase in storage space.
skulk3r, G2 has 1.5GB too. It is simply a difference in describing the same thing. Both Desire Z and G2 has a 4GB flash memory chip, user accessible area is 1.5GB in both cases. There is no 4GB or 1.5GB variant of HTC Vision, there is just one type with different radios.
I didn't realize that the g2 only had 1.5 usable as well.. for some reason I was thinking it had 2.5
It would be nice to see if the future roms can let all 4gb free for us
Im sure you can nix the tomtom maps with a hard reset and new rom as someone just said. There prob will need some development to unlock that memory

There is a huge thread in G2 forum about this and the consensus is that there is only the 1.5GB model. Of course few funny guys voted for 4GB, but a very, very huge majority voted for 1.5GB model, which means there is no 4GB model in reality.

I think you may have been misunderstanding..
It seems that both the G2 and DZ are 4gb but 2.5gb is used or reserved from the factory, leaving only 1.5gb available for the user.
I was just thinking that since so much is taken and it's the first phone with HTC Locations (aka TomTom), it would make sense if 1-1.5gb of the lost space was due to preloaded maps. However I don't think the G2 has these maps so that rules out this theory.
No, i didn't misunderstood that . Both Desire Z and G2 has a 4GB chip, but only 1.5GB is available to users => everyone has the same model, there is no 4GB or 1.5GB version, all are the same.

Not really, the device is over a year old and isn't proper upgrade to the HD2. It has the same 1GHz processor with Adreno 200 GPU, a smaller screen and a worse 3MP camera. The only real upgrade it has IMO is a larger battery.
There is no successor
Actually once you have owned an HD2 you will never get over it, nor find a replacement, sure you will buy many more phones but you will always compare them to the beloved HD2

Nexus 4 = 8 or 16GB storage & no sd slot & non user replacable battery. Limited memory capacity is a major no go for us as need 32GB minimum so HD2 still remains or main company handsets ...
