[Q] Network share browser - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Guys, sorry about this, its probably been asked before but unfortunately the search facility isn't working.
Right to business, I have network shares on my Win7 machine that I want to access from within Android over my wifi network, I have had a look in the market but cant seem to find anything there I could use, please any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Estrongs File Manager has LAN browsing built in.
Astro has Astro SMB module you can add to it for LAN browsing.
If you can't browse your LAN with these, you might have a WiFi issue. If so, check out:

Thank you FreakyFerret "estrongs file manager" worked like a charm, I have astro already but couldn't get it to work.
Thanks again

Glad I could help.
By the way, do you mind if I ask what your router is? And how your network is laid out? IE, does your router handle all your network stuff or do you have a dedicated machine handling DHCP and DNS? If you don't know what those are, your router probably does it for you.

can't access LAN shares

I am trying to access my LAN shares from the Hermes.
My hermes has IP address 192.168.254.9 and my server has 192.168.254.3
So on my Hermes file manager (Total commander) I try to reach
\\192.168.254.3\d$
But it can't reach this.
What do I need to do on Hermes and/or server PC ?
Doesn't seem to work when using Active Sync but needs a WiFi connection.
I set up a VPN connection and whenever I try to access a network share it automatically starts up and I can browse the network. I just use the inbuilt file browser.
Actually it kinda works without the VPN but acts a bit strange... will go down the file structure but not up??
Doesnt work for me using active sync over bluetooth with resco file explorer at all.
Active sync gives you an ip address but if i remember its in the wrong subnet completely.
Using wifi and it works perfectly.

Isn't this a default share windows sets up for its own?
(these default shares are not available for use, I think they are there either for internal use, or to prevent one from sharing the rootfolder)
Could you try sharing a different folder on the PC?
Make a d:\test, and share this folder; there should be a blue hand under the icon of the folder.
It can help to switch off "Simple file sharing" (in Windows Explorer, Tools > Folder Options > View, bottom of the list, uncheck simple file sharing).
Jörg
it does not matter. I tried both a normal share and hidden shares like d$
Now I captured the traffic between my pocket pc and the server.
if I try to connect by \\192.168.254.3\ my pocket pc tries to resolve name of 192.168.254.3 , but in fact it does not need it.
As it couldn't resolve the name it never tries to connect.
edit:
I figured out that the problem occurs because my wifi connection is not connected to "work" but "internet"
if I change it to "work" I can connect to my shares.
But then, what do I lose ?

Don't know - maybe a few apps won't like it. But I've got wifi in internet mode and can still do shares... with a little help from "Pocket Hosts" and "NetUse". Not entirely sure where I got them from... try searching on them ("netuse.cab" on the net use one). Set the name/ip up in pocket hosts and use the name in NetUse. I suspect you could use the name in Resco Explorer or any other app that way.
Maybe I just don't understand the question, I always feel dumb after I speak. I installed An app called "pocket lan" and it just sorted it all out for me. Everything works, it was an older version too.
now there's one strange thing I've encountered...
I can access all the files and folders on my pc via wifi, yet only those that i actually put on sharing. Now when I try to reach the default shares (c$, d$ etc) while logged in as an admin it just doesn't let me to do that ... is there a way to log in as an admin ?
btw I'm using Resco File explorer for that thing - it is quite useful and has never let me down but the admin log in just doesn't work
any ideas ?
thank you all...
I hope those apps will help (I couldn't try yet)
btw, I found the following page with FAQ
http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/networkutils.htm
well, I installed "pocket hosts" and "netuse"
pocket hosts works (I tested with vxutil)
however, when I try to map a connection in "netuse" , netuse does not work.
it is still trying to connect with ost name and makes nbname query on the lan broadcast address.
my server responds with its other IP.
why does not "pocket hosts" work ?
no matter which software I try, I get a "error 53 connecting to resource" error.
When I search for this , I came to the following page:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/242001
This problem seems to be related to my problem. However, I am not using Windows NT 4
My servers are Windows XP
So what is my "error 53" ?
any idea would help me... please...

What you speak of already works and I use it from time-to-time.
First, create an Ad-Hoc (not Infrastructure) Wireless Network with some SSID and Encryption assigned on the PC.
Then on the Universal, add the same Ad-Hoc Wireless Network as you have set on the PC.
You can connect to shared drives on your network with the standard File Explorer.
When you have File Explorer running then from Menu select "Open path" and then "New Path". Then type in the path to your network drive and you should get connected. If you have some form of security, you might need to fill in a login form.

HTC WM6 as member of Windows LAN workgroup via WIFI

I have a new AT&T Tilt and I've just installed a WIFI access point on my home/office LAN. My WIFI laptop was simple to configure as member of the Windows WORKGROUP. I've been struggling with my TILT. Some questions:
1) Is this supposed to work?
2) How do you assign the TILT to a workgroup?
3) I can see other workgroup PCs from the TILT, but I cannot see the TILT from other PCs. I am able to ping the TILT from a PC both by ip address and by device name (which happens to be "tilt").
Thanks for any help,
From what I understand you want to be able to browse phone files over wifi?
Yes. On any LAN PC, I would like to click on "My Network Places" and see the WM6-Phone listed with the other WORKGROUP computers. Then I would like to be to click on it to browse its directorys. And also drag & drop files to/from the phone. Thanks.

Not sure that's going to work unless you can find some other way of connecting other than by using Activesync
I understand the "Not sure that's going to work..." part. I don't follow the "unless you can find some other way...". I'm not using Activesync (at the moment) I wish to use a WIFI Access Point to join a LAN WorkGroup. I call that "some other way". It would seem that this desire would be widely shared by the wider community of users. It's a logical thing to want to do. There are enough parameters to tweek that given the proper expertise, I would guess that you could connect anything to anything else. I just don't have the expertise so I thought I would pose the question...
As far as i know, windows mobile doesn't include a smb (file) server. You have only a client. This means that you can browse your desktops' shares from the phone but not the contrary.
Windows CE 5.0 and 6.0 actually have a smb server but i think this is not shipped with the Mobile variant.
Unless you find some 3rd party software of course (i don't know of any but i've never really looked for it).
Bye
EDIT: if you want to be able to share files in the PPC with the desktops in the network, you can install a FTP server in your PPC. Then you can use a ftp client on the desktop to browse the PPC.
Try this one: http://www.mochasoft.dk/freeware/ftpd.htm
Nice solution. Thank you.
Seeing LAN shares with Tilt
I have the same goal (to share both ways between Tilt and LAN), but some additional issues.Have had the Tilt for only one day, so forgive me for any dumb questions!.
Can't even see the LAN shares from the tilt (nor the other way around). The phone indicates it is connected to our WiFI, and other LAN PCs can see another's share \\Titan for eg., but when I type //Titan into the Tilt browser it says it can't connect to that. Any suggestions why?
I wondered if its a syntax problem. Seems the Tilt does not have a reverse slash (\), but I would think forward slash (/) should work equally well.
In some circumstances, the phone invites logging into a VPN, but we dont have one established on our LAN. Would this facilitate sharing files? Does setting one up require running a server or is a simple Peer to Peer network sufficient? If so, how do you set one up?
Once I am sure I hve a Wifi connection I will try the ftp client solution.
Any suggestions welcomed.
Thanks

[Q] WIFI tether to copy files with Sony W995

I am on HyperDroid 6.0.1 MAGLDR version and am trying to use the Wifi tethering to provide a Wifi access point that my friend's Sony W995 can connect to. I have done this and he can use the internet via my Wifi connection. What I have not been able to do is to copy files between the 2 phones. We used to use Bluetooth but I wanted to try Wifi as we are now further apart and Bluetooth does not connect at this distance.
I have turned on "Network Sharing" on the W995 and set the subnet to 255.255.255.0 (rather than the default 255.255.255.255 - found a website that said this was needed - neither work).
I have ES File Explorer on my Android phone and it cannot see the W995 on the LAN settings (a scan finds nothing).
Does anyone know what I need to set up?
Thanks
Darren .)
You could try airdroid from the market installed on one device and then use the browser on the other to copy files, maybe!!!

I tried airdroid but could not get the w995 to connect to the web address specified in airDroid. I guess i will have to continue to use Bluetooth and leave my phone near my friends's phone
Silly question but did you select wifi tether in airdroid. Like make sure tether is active before starting airdroid?

Not a silly question at all. I looked in airdroid but could not find a tethering option. I had already turned on tethering and got my friend's phone surfing the net via my data connection before trying to run airdroid. AirDroid kept saying wifi is not on.
I did a bit more googling and came across some samba server apps (from which i could connect my phone to my router at home and get my windows 7 PC accessing my sd card wirelessly). I didn't think my friend's w995 had software to access samba shares so that was still no good. I finally found an app called "wifi file explorer" which would detect i was on wifi tethering (also does normal wifi by the way). It would then provide a web server that my friend's w995 could connect to as a simple http://192.168.1.xxx:8000/ address in his w995's web browser. From here he could navigate my sd card and download the relevant files, job done
I tried the same on another friend's Sony w715 but that wouldn't load the main page properly. I will f try some of the "wifi file explorer" options to see if it can make the main page simpler.
Over wifi we transferred a 200MB file in about 8 minutes (if i remember correctly)
Thanks for your help

You can also try setting up FTP file server on Android or set up samba file server on Android.

I had tried a samba server app on my Android phone but i didn't know how to access it from my friend's w995. I also tried the ftp server in "ES File Explorer" but again didn't know how to access it on the w995. Both of the samba and ftp methods could be accessed fine on my windows PC.

I found this too, scanning for SMB devices returns nothing (unlike on my phone which works fine), however setting up the connection to the PC manually by clicking LAN > New and typing in the computer's network name (IP not required), username and password worked perfectly. Let me know if you need clearer instructions on that.
hi mate,
tried that also but did not work ! how did u manage ?
thx in advance
sorryyy .. plz ignore ... just tried it now with LAN again and it worked perfectly ...

EDIT: Nevermind. Thought that you were using the FTP server on the shield, not the computer.
I think there is a fundamental issue here. The Shield TV is actually hosting two networking interfaces:
- bluetooth interface used to connect to bluetooth devices (192.168.49.0/24 network)
- wired/wireless interfaces to connect to the home network for internet access
For some reason the bluetooth interface is the default interface because of which any actions of scanning, discovery, etc. lead to no result, because ES File Explorer is only looking for devices on the bluetooth interface's network.
On the other hand, manually adding the device works because the other interface is active and working.
I sent an email to EStrongs explaining this issue, but have not received any response in a week. The solution is to add a default interface selector in the ES File Explorer menu somewhere, but it has to be implemented by EStrongs.
I have a problem running an FTP on the Shield TV, ever since I stopped using wifi to connect my Shield Tv to my network. I'm not using Ethernet/homeplugs instead, and I have a problem where ES File explorer thinks that the IP address for the shield is 192.168.49.1 rather than my correct network IP Address (allocated statically) of 192.168.0.25. The shield works fine on the network, but the ES File Explorer app doesn't pick up the right IP address, and as a result appears to be unreachable when I try to connect to it over FTP (where the shield is the host)
That's strange! I remember I read the same IP with final 49.1 on mine Ethernet connection! And I still have big connectivity issues, Ethernet and 5G ! N working better, not top notch though! Did You improve yours?

this is a bit maddening. I'm wondering if there is a way of disabling the bluetooth briefly, to allow the ethernet interface to be chosen(?)
edit 12/11/15 ignoring the displayed ip (192.168.49.1), and referencing the assigned static ip appears to work...
can you explain better?Where is the static assigned ip to use for ftp connection?
Update: i've solved using another app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.theolivetree.ftpserver ...where i can choose the preferred connection (bt,wifi, ethernet ...)
