What you speak of already works and I use it from time-to-time.
First, create an Ad-Hoc (not Infrastructure) Wireless Network with some SSID and Encryption assigned on the PC.
Then on the Universal, add the same Ad-Hoc Wireless Network as you have set on the PC.

You can connect to shared drives on your network with the standard File Explorer.
When you have File Explorer running then from Menu select "Open path" and then "New Path". Then type in the path to your network drive and you should get connected. If you have some form of security, you might need to fill in a login form.

Running files from network

I'm new to windows mobile, but been using my P3600 for 2 weeks and the thing that is anoying is not being able to run files directly from a network path. (the lack of a task manager was more anoying but it's solved).
I want to be able to browse fotos on a network path, or run a cab file on a network without having to copy files to device or storage card.
Do I need a 3rd party software? Can I map a location to a drive?
Pretty sure that a 3rd party app. is necessary; at least I've never seen a way to do what you want without a such.
Resco Explorer is an example of such an app. It has the functionality to allocate and access a shared drive on e.g. a PC: http://www.resco.net/
There are probably other apps. that can do the same, but I have only used Resco myself.
I've tried Resco but could never get it to find my computer....Is there anyway of setting a workgroup name within resco?
Thanks

Just to be sure what you mean:
When you say that Resco can't find your computer, does this mean that the computer is not shown under 'My Network'?
I can't actually see my computer under 'My Network', but when I use the 'Map Drive...' option, then it shows up under 'Computers Near Me', and in the window under the 'Map Drive...' there is also the possibility to enter the network path for the shared drive, i.e. like \\MYPC\drive, and then press the 'Share' button after which I'm promted for the user and password to use for logging on to the PC.
I have never had to use a Workgroup name to make it work.
Yea it doesant show in the box but when i type in where its located
\\MAIN\Shared
It comes up with cannot map network path.
Ive got it fine uisng my laptop to my main pc using the above (\\MAIN\Shared)
Just cant seem to get it to map the drive within resco...I thought it would of had something to do with the workgroup.
Thanks anyways
ill keep trying see if i can get it to work.
Just a thought:
Are you sure that the phone and the PC are in the same IP subnet?
Ahhhh....How would i find this out......is it something along the lines of 255.255
I've set it to auto detect within resco......i suspect this may be the problem
Thanks
You can find the IP address of the phone in Start->Settings->Connections->Wireless LAN under the Advanced tab.
If you compare it to the IP address of the PC, then the first 3 parts of the addresses should be the same for them to be in the same subnet.
Ahh got it to work now that was the problem ...thanks alot Its much appreciated

Look for NetUse in the list.
"It allows you to freely browse your local network on your Pocket PC. Basically it does the same thing Resco viewer does, but for free."
With resco is it possible to play audio files from a network with WMP?
Not that I have spend a lot of time trying, but I haven't been able to play an audio file from a network drive with WMP.
It seems to me that WMP can't actually access such a drive, but as mentioned, I haven't spend much time with WMP since I'm using TCPMP, and with this it certainly is possible to play a file on a network drive.
Staying with netuse
I'm using netuse, and it's just what I needed and I recommend it to everybody that doesn't need all the features resco has, because it's a free solution.
Anyway WMP or builtin photo viewer can't access files on network. I need to use another video player and picture viewer.
can someone post a guide for netuse
Netuse doesn't work for me, it sees my MSHOME network but i can acces a path.
gr jeroen
using netuse
You just add the adress of shared folders on your network (as you would in a desktop computer) and those folders apear as local subfolders on a network folder on the device.
- On options "show the network folder" should be enable and you can type in your default domain (should work without it).
- If you're not able to access folders anyway it's probably a network problem ( firewall, etc.)

I have tried accessing my networked PCs and it works if you use Resco Explorer. Couldn't get it to work with the standad File Explorer.
There is almost nothing you can do with two WiFi phones.
You can connect them with ad-hoc network but Windows Mobile does not have the server components for file sharing.
I use Total commander to access files on my PC and even controlled it with remote desktop.
I had no problem accessing shared files on network with the built in explorer but it worked a lot slower then TC. Some kind of delay in the protocol or something.
How The Heck Do U DO That ConnecTin Via Wifi

Whats The Difference Between wiMAX and wifi coz they both use 2.0ghz? Wha does WIFI Stand For It Cannot Be Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). Tankz Yall

Wow thats a lot of questions!
Ok, in order:
1) Just because you see a WiFi signal does not mean you can connect to its source!
It could be another device (mobile / laptop / PC) that does not allow you to connect to it.
The network could be secure so you need a key.
The network could show as "unsecure" but use MAC (thats hardware address) filter so only authorized devices can connect to it.
2) If you managed to establish a connection, it does not mean you can access anything!
To transfer files from PC to Mobile using total commander you need the HD/partition/folder where the files reside to be shared and have the rights to access that share. (On windows PC you can right click a disk or folder and select 'file sharing'). Than you just access a network folder. In total commander for example, you click on the '\\' (top in the file list) then 'LAN', then enter a network path and password if needed.
To serf the internet the network you are connected to must be connected to the internet and allow computers on it access. You may need to manually enter gateway or proxy settings for that network.
3) I did not see any WiFi related tool in the link you provided. In any case it all depends on what software is on the device you are trying to connect to. If there is a server for sharing files (like on PC running win XP) than you can transfer files or you may need a special server program for that device.
4) WiFi stands for Wireless Fidelity - that means the connection is reliable and unlike with analog radio signal which you might here distorted if the reception is not good your data will get through correctly or not at all.
5) WiMax does not work on the same frequency range as WiFi and it is designed for much higher data transfer rates.
You can read all about it here.

That's called theft and illegal intrusion of a computer network. People go to prison for that.
Yes it is very much possible.
Hi guys,
I am extreamly happy to say that i have been able to share files from one windows mobile to another windows mobile that too at the speed of up 450kbps.
i had been trying to do this for atleast 2.5 months with no luck(u may check the related topics, nobody had a idea, Even using xda, google, bing, yahoo, altavista found that nobody has done it before...) but yesterday i made it to work the way i wanted to.
All you need to do is create a adhoc connection(e.g P2P) and download FTP server (Yes your mobile will act as a FTP server) and FTP client.
For FTP server download mochasoft and for FTP Client download resco.
**Once you install resco 2008, go to menu-->options-->addins--> then download ftp plugging(and it will make resco to work as a ftp client)
Mobile A
Start--->settings-->connections-->add new ->name it p2p-->select the option "this is a device-to-device connection(adhoc)...once it is done, turn on wifi on Mobile B it will detect this connections, connect to it.....Now two mobiles are connected with each other via wifi(Without router).....Till this point you can find it in google.
Now to share files open mocha soft on Mobile A(It will show that it is "online" with a specific IP address(Note down this ip address), Anonymous login will be on but preferabaly create a user name (File--->settings--> Add[*give it a read/write permission]) and the password.
Then decide for yourself what exactly you wanna share with the other mobile, in this example i am going to share my SD CARD. Go to file -->settings--> other--> and in the "Login Folder:" put in "\\storage card"
Once that's done open up resco ftp on Mobile B. Go to My ftp locations-->New ftp session--Give a name to ftp session (like abcd), In the host type in the ip address address that you noted down earlier--> let the port 21-->Login:ut in the username that you created-->Password: put in the password
and Hey there you go!!!, you will have the Sd Card of Mobile A and you will be working on it as if it is in your own
....Cont...
On mobile A moccha will notify you that a user has logged on to your server. You can use all FTP commands on mochasoft.
I downloaded the 700Mb movie which was stored in my frnds mobile while we were having beer and it got downloaded at the speed of 450kbps(it started off with 350kbps and was fluctuating from 380 to 450kbps), Just before doing this i tried to copy a 10mb file using bluetooth and resco showed the speed 20kbps........
So next time when you go out to meet your frnds you can transfer all their stuff at the lightning speed via WIFI file sharing......
Good Luck!!
How to browse the internet using Wi-Fi?

Access PPC from PC via WIFI

Hi,
Is it possible for my WM6.1 device to join my LAN Workgroup such that I can view the files on my PPC from my desktop computer and drag and drop files over to the PPC via WIFI? Kind of like using the PPC as a NAS device?
Thanks in advance
Rob
Yes and No
To my knowledge no. i believe that microsoft stopped allowing that feature within active sync quite awhile ago, but what i have managed to do is to create a computer to computer network (ad-hoc) where my PDA was the access point and my laptop could then connect to that.
I could transfer files using explorer on my phone to access my network drives on the laptop, then copy and paste from there, but i could not find my phone on the laptop due to it not having shared folders to my knowledge.
The things i would like to achieve is shared internet over wifi by using the phone as an access point and to figure out how to access files on phone on the laptop. Not the other way round.
When i created this computer to computer network i thought that if i had 3G connected it would automatically pick up the connection on the laptop but i was wrong.
Which means i am no expert on the matter, but im sure there is a way
the same rules goes for pda's on the same net as for other computers
if they got the correct rights to access shared dirs
it can access them and map them if one use programs like total commander
and know a bit about network in generals not really that user friendly i guess
It can be done, I use a program called WMFTP. Google it.
Yea i get some of it

Some of it i get but others bits i dont. Like is it possible to set sharing rights to directory's on the phone? If that is possible great.
Also how do you find out the device name or would you have to use the ip address for mapping those directory's?
I have a touch diamond and would love to map the internal storage on my network, but have failed at that.
Still not figured how to share the internet connection of the phone over wifi either

how to add network share using Resco File Explorer on HTC Touch HD

hi guys,
I am using Synology Network Attached Storage and have "video" folder as a default share. Its Ip address is 192.168.0.99 and name is MYDISKSTATION.
On my Touch HD I'm using Resco Explorer. When I click on Network -> add new folder it doesn't let me add video folder using either name or Ip.
I've tried \\192.168.0.99\video and \\MYDISKSTATION\video and none of them works. it says not available.
Could someone enlighten me on this area please.
Cheers guys.
use the standard file explorer, it'l make a disk, and having that said, how do i remove this disk?
When I set up my shares, I just browsed to the machine in question and chose the share.

Took me ages to get my linkstation to be recognised. Try some of these points
1) make sure that your network data connection is turned off, otherwise resco tries to search for shared devices on your service providers network as well as your own.
2) in resco, click map drive, then in the bottom right, click menu -> settings. deselect use auto detect and make sure only your home IP address and netmask are shown - ie 192.168.0.1 and 255.0.0.0
3) typing the ip address will not work and resco will not by default find your device.
4) In Resco, click on map drive, and type in the correct path (although it seems you have already tried this so the clue might be in step 1?).
5) if not try just typing \\MYDSIKSTATION\ (with and without the last \
Hope this helps
Does this actually work?

It worked for me if I turn the GSM connection off and just have WiFi running. Maybe some sort of routing issues.

resco also allows FTP access, which is probably better, as the network share requires you to be on the same network (for example connected to your wireless network)
FTP can be accessed anywhere you have data connection but requires you to be running FTP software on your computer.
FTP is very easy to setup and use and will allow you to have access to any file folder that you choose on your PC (handy to have a choice of over 30gig of music to listen to )
Schaps Network plugin. Google it.
Ftp looks great
thank you

I have Resco Explorer 2010, paid for.
Also Total Commander CE, which someone mentioned.
GSFinder+ as well.
Yet, I cannot figure out how to do that.
Connected to my home network via wi-fi. The PC's hard drives are set up to be shared. One PC can access the files of another.
I can't figure out how the HD2 can see the PC's files. Can anyone give me exact directions, using any of the tools mentioned?
--------------
Also, conversely, is there a way to set up the HD2 for file sharing, so that the PC can access it via the wi-fi network?
