I noticed yesterday when I pressed on the screen I could hear a faint creeking sound. Slide the keyboard and tried again then I saw it. Along each long side the glass is very faintly raised above the bevel and you can "press" it back down flush. It's only the tiniest little movement but it's definitely there.
Anyone else? This might be a deal breaker for me. This is barely a week old and I treat my phone like a baby, so for a screen defective to pop up already isn't sitting well.
I had a similar problem but it wasn't the screen creaking it was the slider plastic rubbing against the keyboard when I pressed on the screen and would only happen when the slider was closed.
The sprint store I bought the phone at sent me to a repair center to try and fix it but they just gave me a new phone.

Mines at the repair center now. I go back in 30 minutes. The fact though is the long sides of the glass were very slightly raised above the bevel and if you applied just a bit of pressure you could see it settle back down below it, "stick" for a minute before coming back up just above the bezel.
I'll update after I see what they say.
Well at first the tech didn't see a problem, then I kind of showed him specifically the one side, and told him to press down on the screen and look at it. He noticed what I noticed and said "Why I don't see it a problem at the moment, I do see the potential for it being one in the future" (whatever that means). He promptly ordered me a replacement which will be in Monday.
That's good they're replacing it.

yes the left side of my screen does this. i've lived with it for the past 3 weeks but i can't get over it i'm constantly trying to push it down...
i got mine at radio shack though that mean i gotta take it back there or will the sprint repair guys look at it? can it be a different radio shack?

I believe within 30 days its all radioshack, however after 30 days you can bring it in there without a prob.

The Evo had the same problem, and I think I saw a few Nexus with the issue. Definitely take it to get replaced!
Worth getting replaced, since it could eventually detach completely.
I never noticed it till this post, but the left side of my screen is also lifting. Ill probably just wait for it to get worse then have it swapped though.
I have only had my Epic for 3 days now and I noticed after reading this thread that the left side of my glass is coming up. It is not over the bezel, but it is flush with the top of the bezel. I don't know if I should take it back. I am just worried that it will get worse over time.
Well got my replacement today and the same issue exists on a brand new one. It is not raised up nearly as much as my returned one but you can still press the left side/bottom when keyboard is slid out and feel some very slight movement down. It's even with the bezel where as the opposite side is slight below the bezel. I never had an issue with my returned one. It is more "annoying" just knowing it is there then any kind of hinderance to use or function.

I have a feeling at least some of you are mistaking movement between the two halves of the phone for "creaky glass" - if you press down on the top of the phone, it's going to move. There is a small gap between the top and bottom half of the phone - you're pressing the top half into the bottom half and feeling that movement and seeing the glass move (without really noticing that the whole rest of the top half of the phone is moving too). I don't know if some of you have never had a slider phone before, but I've had many and they're all like this.
There could be a few defective phones out there that really do have glass that's not attached properly, but I have a strong feeling that some of you looked at the title of this thread, looked at your phone and then started freaking out over nothing.
Has anyone with the raised glass on the left side noticed it getting worse over time? I have this issue and only three days left to exchange...
I'm pretty sure the "creaky" part is not really an issue.. at least on mine. The creaking isn't coming from the screen itself. Its the top and bottom plastic rubbing when you push the screen down.. test it by sliding it open before pushing the screen down and there's no noise.. at least on mine...
I wonder how hard it is to take the phone apart and if you could just put a little super glue to keep it down... or just pry it up a little and get some in there.. someone else try it first deal?

I tested my Epic and noticed the creak as well. And I thought it was from the glass moving up and down. But then I read your post and then held the phone only using the sides of the top (screen) part and then used a finger to push around on various parts of the screen. Creaky sounds were gone.
You are correct, at least for me. The creaky sounds in my case are certainly from the two sliding parts of the phone pressing against each other. And they only come from the left side of the phone. I consider this a non-issue.

This is what I'm worried about (not the creaking). My glass is raised in the left side, worried about it getting worse and separating, only two days left to swap.

I'm that my screen seems loose when my keyboard is out. I'm wondering if this is just how sliders are, since this is the first slider phone i've owned. I've had the phone for 2 days. If its a manufacturing defect, I want to get it exchanged.
I went to the sprint store to check the display models, none of them had any screen wobble. But the store manager's phone did have a screen that wobbled when slid out, so he refused to exchange mine. He claims that my keyboard has been used more than the store demo models. I think thats a load of bs...

If you're holding your phone like you would use it normally. And then tilt the screen toward you about 1 inch. My screen will move and make a noise. If i tilt it back, it moves back and makes a noise. =/
Yes, mine has developed a wobble as well. When holding the keyboard and moving the phone up and down vertically, I can feel the screen wobbles.
Also, when keyboard is closed, various parts of the touchscreen feels loose. Especially noticeable in landscape - i.e. when playing angry birds. when I tap on screen, the screen has depresses / has some play.
I don't think my phone had the wobble on day 1, so this is something that developed. Since it's only been 3 days, I'll be looking into getting it replaced.
Its the nature of the beast. It will also loosen up through time too. Don't want to worry about that? Get a candybar or pda style phone with no moving parts.

No problems here my slider is rock solid which is awesome considering im coming from a palm pre with super oreo.
Mostly i'm just concerned that if the slider has loosened soo much in 2 days of very light use, how will it last 2 years?

This is my fourth slider phone. They always loosen up a bit, but the device will be fine. If you really, REALLY can't live with it, bring it in for a new one every once in a while... that's what insurance is for. Or take it apart and tighten it up yourself. I did that with my Mogul and it wasn't too hard.
P.S. The poll is flawed. The answer is either yes or no.

The worst case I've heard of or seen personally was with the Pre. Mine had a slight wiggle that I could live with, but I heard of some twisting so far that the screen was at a 90 degree angle to the keypad. If you google "Palm Pre Oreo" you'll see some examples. My Epic has a slight wobble that I was worried about (especially after coming from the Pre)...but if that many other people are experiencing the same thing I'm going to assume that it's normal.
A case helps in my opinion to keep the sliding mechanism in place. Mine doesn't wobble as much as a nude epic.

Bring it in, DON'T take it apart yourself. From what the tech bulletins have mentioned, a special jig is required to put the phone back together. Let the Sprint techs handle it and let them take the risk.
me and my wife both got epics the same day, hers wobbles and mine doesn't and believe me it wobbled from day one, she don't even use the keyboard, I just noticed it when I slid it out to help set her phone up for her, I figured maybe mine doesn't do it because I hae a case but mine was rock solid and I've used the keyboard a lot more than her. I think maybe hers gets returned within the 30 days.
Wobbly screens are not normal. Lol Mine is rock solid. But hey, maybe mine is abnormal?

My Epic is rock solid. Doesn't budge unless I actually force it with my hand.. and even then it doesn't "make a noise."
Went to a sprint store today to return a case, and checked out the epics they had on display. Mine has a very slight amount of wiggle, and showed it to tech there. The tech and i went over the 4 they had on display, all of them had a little bit of wiggle, with one not having much at all. He said all sliders will have a little bit, but if it turns into a lot you have a year to exchange, since the phone has a 1 year warranty. If they get a lot of complaints, they turn it into samsung as a "known issue" but than its up to samsung to issue a fix or say that its normal. This is coming from a tech at Sprint Premiere repair center.
But honestly, almost every slider phone or device ive had, has a little bit of wiggle when its open. I just bought a Tivo Slide remote control, and when you open that it wiggles in the exact same way the epic does. It has the same spring loaded action to it as well. My droids (i had 3 of them) all had it too.
I just think its the nature of the sliders. Obviously if its abnormally loose you should exchange, but if it just wiggles a little bit, chances are exchanging it will be diffucult depending on the tech you talk to, and also, the new phone isnt guaranteed to wiggle any less.
Just my .2 cents i suppose
I dropped my Epic yesterday (luckily not a scratch) but now I feel the slider a bit loose from the left side. You can lift it 1-2mm from the left side if held in portrait mode, but right side still sturdy. Its a but annoying to type since it wobbles a bit and makes some clicking sound when open. Just wanted to ask if anyone has or seen a teardown of the Epic to see if there is a way to tighten the slider a bit??

Mine does it a tad bit as well. Never dropped, but I think the case may be causing it to losen up a bit.
Mine does the same thing. Only had it 4th days and it's got some serious wobble. Definitely wish it felt more sturdy, ala moto droid
what your feeling seems to be what most epic users are having. I wish they made the slide as sturdy as the TP2 slide was. Man that thing was strong! My old epic had the same kind of movement right out of the box, I recently got another one and it is not too bad but I am sure over time it will loosen up again.
The build quality is really on the "meh" side. My first Epic had screen wobble after a week and the screen glass raising up above the bezel on the left side. My replacement (brand new) had screen wobble out of the box and again the glass on the left side of the screen is raising up slightly above the bezel. You can slide it open, press on the glass on the left side and literally see it move back down into the bezel. The stores display model had a tight screen and the glass was set into the bezel on both sides. Not in the mood to go on a replacement spree. I pay insurance so I am waiting to see if it gets any worse over time.

from a employee's perspective, you'd have a MUCH better experience if you swap them out immediately until you get a perfect handset. The longer the wait between replacements, the more likely it is for the following:
The rep forgets you. Sounds silly, but dealing with one rep/store makes it more likely they go the extra mile for you. For example, replacing the epic with a new one, instead of a refurb.
They decide it's not a replaceable issue and tell you to go through insurance and pay the $100 deductible if you feel the need to replace it.
It gets worse and worse until you finally decide to head to the store, and they tell you it's now considered physical damage and refer you to Asurion.
I can't tell you how many loose charging ports or slides we saved from being *broken* phones by catching it early. Big difference.
no luck finding a useful teardown to see if there is an easy way to access the slider and see if you can just grip it a little so its tighter...
can the tach at sprint take a look at it?? Im past my 30 days and im not looking for a replacement... just enough for it to stop making sounds when i type while walking...
The screen rides on rails. If you have ever taken apart a semi auto handgun then you would know what i am talking about. Only way to tighten them up would be to squeeze the female end of the rails which is on the keyboard part of the phone.

but thats exactly what im looking to do. i want to see if there was an easy way to have it exposed so i can tighten it... i know that if i get to it, i can make the adjustments to make it rock solid, what worries me is the teardown part

did you figure out how to tighten it? I have the same problem. My became loose because I was trying to pry out a case I put on. It's not exactly loose, but it bugs me that there's a 1mm gap between the screen and keyboard.
Sultan, can you take pictures of the back of the phone as well?
If you could demo a "teardown" on that (what else do you have to lose?) and figure out how to safely tighten the railing, that'd be great.
I don't know if it would be possible so if there's any brave or rich soul out there willing to attempt, many of us will be grateful.
I've had my phone for about 8 days now and I noticed the wobble as soon as I took it out of the box. If I have my palm on the bottom right corner and then try to click something in the upper left corner, the screen rocks back and forth. Annoying.
I got it at best buy. not sure if I want to go through the hassle of unrooting and getting a new phone just for a minor wobble. Can you just take it back and say you want a new one? I've never done it before...

I took my epic back to best buys cause of screen wobble. They didnt have a problem at all. I just told them to compare it with other epics they had in stock.

I've actually been waiting for a replacement phone since day one (due to a scratch on the screen from the factory), but today I noticed a new problem that wasn't there before. There is now some dust that is trapped between the layers of glass.

Sorry about the crummy picture. I'm not sure if you can tell but if you're looking at the phone itself, it's obvious the dust is on some middle layer, due to the way the shadows fall. Since it's not on the outermost layer, I see no way of getting rid of this.

That is a bad idea, I did that once on a Nexus one.
It had two spec of dust under the screen, i removed the battery and used canned air. When I turned the phone over the lower half of the screen was filled with dusts.
My suggestion is to get a replacement.

I woke up today and noticed dust under my screen as well. I have no idea how it got under there, or when, I just noticed it today.
Has anyone done any replacement due to this issue? I'm afraid I'm going to get a refurbished phone if it gets exchanged. For those who bought at the microsoft store, do you get your exchanges there or are they sent to you?

This has me a bit nervous because I noticed a bit of lint under the screen today. The point of entry appears to be the speaker above the screen, which has tiny holes which may allow dust to get trapped (permanently?) underneath. With that in mind I certainly wouldn't recommend blowing air on it which probably would just push more dust through the holes.
noticed a large quantity of dust under the glass today. I have been loving this phone really, but this is disappointing-especially since if I send it back I will likely get a refurb.
I did attempt a fix myself, slid out the keyboard and turned over the phone to remove the 2 screw covers and screws. Popped off the top plastic cap and attempted to slide the glass up and off. Glass wouldn't budge.
i could be wrong but most of the replacement DVPs that have been sent out are brand new units. if the dust is really annoying I'd go for a replacement.

Both my initial DVP from the WP7 launch (11/8) and my current one have dust under the screen. I tried getting a replacement from Dell last week, but the replacement locked up frequently. For now I'm sticking with dust rather than lockups.
I'm interested to know if others who have had their's for a few months are experiencing the same.

Not sure, but it could also be getting in from the back. There is tons of dust/lint from my pocket underneath the battery cover and battery.
the evidence is compelling
dell should stick to computers, where they have excellent service
if they want to manufacture phones then research first
i dont think they forgot about sealing the screen

I think it's just a flaw in the design. It happened on my original MS Store DVP and the December replacement.
I've got a few specks of dust under my screen as well. Super frustrating because I don't even use the DVP daily, it just sits at home for testing usually. Now I keep it in a ziplock bag because I'm a freak.
My brother's first unit had a ton of dust under it, but for the moment his new one is fine. He actually uses his everyday and it spends tons of time in his pocket.
Definitely a design flaw/ quality control issue but I won't send it in just to get a refurb back, I don't trust Dell enough.
I just received my HTC One developer edition, and like others, there are some build quality issues, most notably the screen is not lined up with the rest of the front of the phone (ie, you can feel the screen glass grabbing your finger when you swipe down to pull the notifications panel)
It was not too bad of an issue when comparing to others from YouTube, also I bought the phone from HTC, so there is no way for me to exchange it at AT&T.
So I decided to fix it.
- Heat up the screen with a heat gun on low or a hair dryer on high. Make sure you keep on moving the heat source in figure 8 and keep the heat source around 10 inches away from the screen. Do this for around 5 minutes, the phone needs to be hot, uncomfortable to hold, but still you should be able to hold it with your bare hands.
- Protect the screen and back of the phone. Clamp the top of the screen. Wait for the phone to cool. Release the clamps.
This worked wonderfully for me, the screen is now flush with the body, I can't feel it when I run my finger on the edge between the screen and the body.

I'm going to have to try this--I didn't want to send my phone back to AT&T because that would be a hassle but at the same time I really hated how i could feel the little lip every time I pulled down the notification shade.
Thank god I don't have this issue, this is way too crazy of a fix for me O_O
Good fix thanks for posting. This is what ifixit actually does to remove the screen. Hot air melts the glue so you can take off the screen or adjust it.
A sidenote: If you heat the phone up too much the battery degrades so be careful.
Too bad there wasn't an easy fix like yours to my dev edition defect. No way to solve bleed issues apart from sending it back for a replacement.

This isn't a fix for all build quality issues.. one fix for the gap inbetween bezel and speaker grills is put a TPU case on it. It will squeeze it together and make the gap go away.

well im on my second one right now you can feel the screen glass grabbing your finger when you swipe down to pull the notifications panel on both of them i don't even know if i should exchange again, but it feel like the screen is about to cut my finger, when swiping down its really anoying
I take it hose clamps are pretty strong? seems like they'd have to be to squish that glass back down. Dont know if my walmart plastic clamp kit will do it Thanks for sharing
...This is a rather extreme fix.

This is similar to how we fixed the early Nexus 7s. Asus had issues with the left hand side of the screen being proud of the bezel. The fix was to warm the periphery of the screen to re-soften the adhesive and then place heavy books on the screen and leave for a few hours... worked a treat.

This improved things on my "One" as well.
now if I could just get something to close the minor gaps between the speaker grills and the plastic..
I'm thinking about using a bit of krazy glue and working it into the opening and putting my clamps back on until it dries.
This phone will be close to perfect, even if I have to help it along myself

WOW...Let me know how that works also. I'm trying to not let the small gap bother me, but i'm worried over time that dirt or moisture will get in there and mess some things up. The issue comes from the speakers not being part of the 1 solid piece of aluminum but are snapped on later. This is why in the drop tests the speakers came off on some of them.
going to grab some toothpicks + krazy glue on the way home and see what can be done about the gaps.
Thanks to the procedure in the OP, my glass is now flush with the speaker grill on the top of the device. Much more pleasant to pull down the notification shade now.
Trying to do the same with the lower speaker grill, but it's not as big a deal as the top one.
Nice. Will have to pick up some clamps from Home Depot...I do definitely feel the overhang when pulling the noti shade. You know over extended use, the grime from our fingers will deposit there. ugh

The top and bottom speaker grills are glued on as well so they might not have let them set long enough causing that seperation. As for the light bleed sheesh , im sure theyre rushing to meet demand, but what good does it do if they deliver an inferior product

Just got my new black Samsung galaxy s5 on att. I have noticed something that I hope will not become an issue that would cause me to have to exchange the phone. I noticed a small gap at the top of my screen where the screen meets the bezel. There is some dust that has gotten in there and I have only had the phone for a week. The rest of the phone (sides and bottom) are flush with no gaps. Is this normal or should I worry and let my OCD drive me to exchange it? Have any of you experienced this?

Funny i was wondering if I was over reacting. I saw this gap and thought the same thing. I had a Motorola Atrix that got dusty under the screen due to the same type off thing. I have not put recovery on my phone so that Knox does not trip. I'd like to hear more from people before i think about warranty. I will refuse a refurbished phone.

Well take it for what it is but at least you are not alone. There are two of us with this issue. As for whether it is normal or not, well I am not sure and that is why I posted here. I am with you on the warranty. I will not take a refurb phone. I will check a couple in the ATT store tomorrow and report back my findings. My 14 days is up thursday so I need to decide quick if this is a real issue. Thank you for replying!!

Pics please, and no its not normal. If dust can get into the phone then so can water and so its not water resistent anymore. I would exchange if it we`re me

I would definitely exchange it. That gap would compromise the IP67 that the GS5 has. And what I hear alot is Samsung CS sucks!! So you don't wanna have to deal with them should something happen.
Do you guys actually own a GS5? Could you check yours and see. It is not big, just enough to fit a piece of paper into. And is that confirmed that it would compromise the ip67 certification? I mean do you really know that for sure?

Yes I do own a GS5. And there is no gap. It's tight all around the bezel. And sorry, I meant to say it COULD, not would. Can't trust autocorrect these days Lol

No problem! Just checking. Alright well it looks like I am going to try and do an exchange. Now my only worry is what will happen if the replacement has the same issue?
Then get a really good cover for it! Lol. But hopefully that won't be the case. Fingers are crossed for you! There's nothing more annoying than getting a faulty looking unit right out of the box :/ @Primenay13

Compare this to your device and let me know if it looks similar. In the meantime, I have requested a replacement from amazon since my 14 day return is almost up.

It's normal.
Your phone is extremely linty, so its hard to tell much. Also, you should circle what you're referring to. From the pictures I don't see anything unusual.

That is the point. For me, the only part that gather lint is in this gap between the screen and top bezel. I have another picture here that will show you the nature of the gap. I used a piece of paper for scale. The piece of paper can fit right in between this gap, even folded.

I have a hard time believing that you guys don't have it considering I have seen 3 phones, all brand new, and they all look like this. When you say you don't have it, are you saying that your phone DOES NOT look like mine in the pictures I posted, or just saying nope without looking.?
