[Q] Root Legend:Using Unrevoked (latest updates from the unlockr) - Legend General

Hi guys,
just checked theunlockr.com today and saw this:
sorry, cant post links.
just check theunlockr.com for how to root legend using unrevoked
It has been updated on 22nd Sept 2010.
Has anyone tried it?
Seems you can root and use custom roms without downgrading.
Is it possible?

I'm curious about this as well. The post on Unlockr clearly references the legend, but the FAQ page at unrevoked doesn't list it as one of the supported models.
Has anyone tried this?

just check the video they have posted, they are using an EVO as an example, but the video says it is the same for all the devices.
So hopefully it should work.
Waiting for someone to try it

someone who hasn't rooted his phone yet. Here is the link for I brave volunteer:
http://theunlockr.com/2010/09/22/how-to-root-the-htc-legend-unrevoked-method/

Cool. This has the same limitations as other root methods though, yeah? Such as not having proper access to the /system partition, or am I living in the past?

I so want to try but don't know how to unroot

I think you can also flash custom roms after rooting by this method.
In the last sentence it has instructions on how to load a custom rom and custom recovery.
Has anyone successfuly rooted using this method.

Oh, come on. Why do I keep getting this? Why can some post the word "no" without issue, and I have to write unnecessarily long posts?

I have tried it on a stock 2.03 rom...Fail.. Freezes the phone..
I will now downgrade to 1.31 and then try again....

i'm going to try it right now with 1.31 rom... one moment....
it doesn't detect my phone... i will try to fix it

I just want to tell you both good luck. We're all counting on you.

Oops
Wow did I kill this thread...

looking at the posts i think i will wait before trying it.
I dont have much information about roting and stuff.
well its time i read up a few rooting posts...
now where is that search button...

An update from the unlockr.com comment section,
2 guys tried it, but were not successful.
But they were on a mac.
Any one rooted over here using this method on windows with the HBOOT drivers?

Yes. For some phones there's "unrevoked forever" that will unlock your NAND and give you r/w on /system. Right now the welcome message in #unrevokedtest is "Testing will resume on future versions when we have them. Thanks to all for your support. Next train: HTC Desire (maybe Legend) S-OFF. Est arrival: unknown." S-OFF means permanent NAND unlock.
The big difference between unrevoked and other root methods is that it will really flash a custom recovery image, not fake-flash.

Quite correct.
The last info I got from Matt was that an early command in their rooting procedure already fails and that Legend apparently is quite different from other phones.

Damn! thats quiet bad.
so are they trying to sort it out or is it gonna remain that way.
I had seen the unrevoked team twitter post informing they were working on Legend, but then there were no updates later.
hopefully they are busy creating more good stuff for the community.

So unrevoked³ is the same as current rooting method where you need to use the ROM Manager to boot into ClockWorkMod or a batch script (vs just launching recovery with VOL - & POWER) and having no access to /system?

At the moment you can't get permanant root on 2.2. You can get a temporary root, but that wont let you edit anything on /system. If you can find someone with an xtc clip you can get your phone S-OFF which makes /system writeable.
Downgrading seems to be easy based off the 2 or 3 step by step guides I've seen on this forum so far.
Your questions are no different to any of the ones asked before by others, please use the search next time.
Downgrading will work, but, it will still be unrootable. As said above, the only way as of now to root 2.2 is by using an XTC Clip hardware box to get S-OFF, then, downgrade (this is a 'proper' downgrade) and root.

Enough of this already, people. You need a XTC Clip for that, which costs about $220. This is the only way, for now.

I don't believe this. Because that process was not a newer one and was there long ago. If it worked, it must have became a lot popular by now. And "Universal Androot" is not a root application recommended for NAND locked devices like wildfire. If one has bypassed the nand security with xtc clip and made s-off, then this process might work. And once if u make s-off, there are many other rooting options available. But the point here is to root the wildfire with hboot 1.01 and S-ON dude.... Do not just stick with the thread title. Read the thread, he mentioned wildfire 2.2 clearly.
I doubt whether ur device is wildfire or not (if wildfire rooted or not). Check the below attached "Root and Me" application. In that, go to the root guides and check the compatible devices for "Universal Androot" process. There is no wildfire in that.
Just confirm any process after it worked with u guys.

U might not have asked this question if u know that his process is nothing but "Universal Androot".
Inspite of being aware, i just tried it for u. It won't work and says failed.
If anyone wants to recheck they might. Actually that process is little bit confusing. And im attaching a screen shot of that website below.
The process says to install "App installer" just to install an apk file. Cant we install an apk file from a file manager ? This is ok.
Then the process says just to enable usb debugging alone to transfer the apk file frm PC to wildfire. It not even says from ADB, so i expect it means to transfer through disk drive. Come on stop joking.
I found that this forum

was very helpful I am running droid 2.2 Froyo on a Cherry Mobile Candy
I was able to root my phone semi permanently. So long as I don't clear the data for the Z4root program I maintain superuser status. So far I have had no problems and have been able to remove bloatware using AntTek App manager with ease.
thanks man

UPDATE: [UNITY POSTPONED] - sorry guys, I was overexited when I heard about the leak and presumed it was a signed flashable rom that can update SHIP S-ON 1.22 phones with corrupted system partitions from bad visionary permroot attempts. It turned out what we have is partition dumps, so again we are back to waiting for the official rom.
___________
There is a flashable non-signed gingerbread rom from HTC: - unfortunately not good for reviving bricks.

Need bricked testers to try to revive your phones. - already confirmed to not work once
___________
People still use Visionary?
it happens from time to time - people who don't want to install SDK and are OTA 1.22.
and there are tons of visionary guides spread all around too. people bump into them and attempt rooting.
in the minds of lazy/newer members, they think visionary is easier and never read the warnings of "Don't use it to root your [email protected]#@!#[email protected][email protected]!" =D
Used it 4 times to temp root never had a problem. Perma root I used the gfree via term emulator method. Adb I cannot get to work.
Nonsense!
I hope you all realize that there's a sticky in the General section that covers this.

Yup I see some people still recommending the "one click" Visionary root in some forums. Ouch. I will say though that it seems fine for temprooting. I used it for that, and like some other people on this thread, proceeded to use Gfree to gain permroot. I think many uninformed may be tempted by that pretty little box on Visionary that says "Attempt Permroot Now" though.....

[Q] Unrevoked 3.32 and HTC Wildfire

Hey. Well searching on the forums or at all I just can't find a straight answer.
I have HTC Wildfire with Android 2.2.1. Can I use the newest Unrevoked 3.32 now to root this device?
I went through all the posts in this thread and the last person on page 47 mentioned he was able to do so: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788776&page=47
I want to be sure before I attempt to do this and possibly brick it
Well, thus far, that is the only post that has show unrEVOked to work on 2.2 ota.
May I suggest to you my way?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14855147&postcount=1

He (post #461) didn't clearly say that he used unrevoked.
Posting in that related thread doesn't mean using the process right.
And if u can see his previous post (#460), it gives the link to this process

So, don't use unrevoked for wildfire alpharev hboot. Ofcourse we should't forget unrevoked .

Your question was answered. Why bump needlessly? No you can NOT use Unrevoked to root your device. You will have to get S-OFF first via AlphaRev X, then, use SuperOneClick v1.9.5 to get root, and, if you are interested in getting a Custom Recovery to flash Custom ROMs and stuff, you can follow nejc's post.
Unrevoked does not come into the picture at all if you are on official 2.2.1.
One more thing, there is no way to remove S-OFF once you perform it. (yet) So, if warranty is essential for you, keep this in mind.
EDIT: Read the Post before the post on Page 47 of the thread you posted (Last Post of Page 46). Then you will see the continuity. He did NOT use Unrevoked to root his phone.
This http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788776&page=47 (same as the link above) is also the method I used and I must say it worked like a charm!

Well, 3xeno, you CAN use Unrevoked to root the device. I did, worked flawlessly.
1.) S-OFFed with AlphaRev X.
2.) Installed 2.1 RUU.
3.) Used Unrevoked to root and flash recovery.
4.) Happily using CyanogenMod 7.

It may be working. But it shouldn't be recommended buddy.
After s-off, ruu + unrevoked is completely unnecessary process and a risky process which includes possibility of errors. And moreover a lot lengthier process.
I think these are some disadvantages of it...
-- it includes flashing of radio and an attempt to overwrite hboot both of which are sensitive process. Ofcourse RUU generally will not brick the phone. But when phone is S-OFF, it skips the signature check which means AFAIK it cannot differentiate a bad file and a good file.
-- there will be two eclair RUUs present. And flashing the oldest eclair RUU will mostly result in touch screen failure. This should be fixed by flashing the newest eclair or froyo ruu again.
-- I think the unrevoked version installs the 2.x recovery for wildfire. Since unrevoked is not released for a while for wildfire I think so. If yes, it means cannot install 2.3 roms unless using rom manager or by reflashing recovery with regular processes. And ofcourse the offline charging bug.
Unrevoked software hacks the greatest security so as to install the custom recovery. And what if there is no security at all. Even simplest methods can do the job.

Sure, but, I wont recommend it. Also, because it seems that this method is widely recommended, the forums are full of "Touchscreen Fail" after flashing the Eclair RUU.
Besides, I don't get what's the issue with using Fastboot, where just 1 line in Command Prompt will do it, but, whatever suits people............ Fastboot is supposed to be a breakthrough feature when you get S-OFF using AlphaRev X, and, it's sort of an "insult" to not use it.
Well, it worked for me. I guess I'm lucky.

Just like he said the best way is to downgrade through that method. And perm root either by the advanced way cyanogen wrote up. Or more user friendly ones that just require terminal emulator and not adb. u can find any of them through basic searches or through the development section.

1-click root like Z4root isn't available for any phone with Gingerbread 2.3.4 and up.
Judging by some posts on various boards, it won't ever be available, since developers aren't working on any such solution.
You can read some entertaining read:
http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/...otloaders-rooting-manufacturers-carriers.html
And remember some things:
1) Since that time, Samsung and HTC has officially declared they aren't going to lock their bootloaders. Actually, Samsung kept it open all the way, and HTC declared they're going to unlock them starting this summer.
2) There was no easy root app for Gingerbread 2.3.4 ever made, even though an exploit exists that allows temp-rooting. Which means - there are no devs interested in making rooting easier than it currently is, or they're prevented from making rooting easier.
About devs not willing to make it stupid easy to root anymore - you might read Cyanogen's post somewhere, also from several months ago.
Ok. I've researched, and found something called GingerBreak, but I don't really understand it.

To restate what Jack_R1 said. There is no root for gingerbread on this phone. It's simple enough to revert back to 2.2.1 and root once you are there.
[in my words]
If you afraid of ADB and the SKD, and you are to lazy to do some research, you shouldn't be rooting your phone anyway.
[/in my words]
now i took the time to put all of the basic information that you'll need in the newcomers thread. Link in my signature. Take your time read though that and you can root your phone. Regardless of the version you are using. And there is a link, with video, for you setting up your ADB.

EDIT: read on xda that all i need to do is download the froyo rom, boot into recovery or hboot (sorry i forgot), and flash it? Am i correct?

well, once you have the PD151IMG.zip in the ROOT (not in any folders) of your sdcard, the bootloader/hboot should recognize it, and will ask you if you want to update. hit yes, and the rest will be done for you. DO NOT PULL THE BATTERY DURING THE UPDATE PROCESS, THIS WILL BRICK THE DEVICE. after that just reboot (first reboot should take longer than usual, it's normal)
if for some reason the bootloader/hboot isn't seeing your PD151IMG.zip, then redownload the zip again.
It did the no image thing... retry? My stats are:

MICROP-0429
RADIO-26.11.04.03_M

EDIT: I connected it to my computer, and the zip file is named PD15IMG and a lot of other things. Do I delete all of that and rename it PD15IMG.zip?

What do you mean newer version? Are you following the downgrade guide that requires adb to push, execute some files, and flash all by adb. When you downgrade, you don't simply flash the pd15img.zip you should follow the guide.
