UPDATE: [UNITY POSTPONED] - sorry guys, I was overexited when I heard about the leak and presumed it was a signed flashable rom that can update SHIP S-ON 1.22 phones with corrupted system partitions from bad visionary permroot attempts. It turned out what we have is partition dumps, so again we are back to waiting for the official rom.
___________
There is a flashable non-signed gingerbread rom from HTC: - unfortunately not good for reviving bricks.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054198
Check sha1 after you download.
Need bricked testers to try to revive your phones. - already confirmed to not work once
___________

People still use Visionary?

it happens from time to time - people who don't want to install SDK and are OTA 1.22.
and there are tons of visionary guides spread all around too. people bump into them and attempt rooting.

in the minds of lazy/newer members, they think visionary is easier and never read the warnings of "Don't use it to root your [email protected]#@!#[email protected][email protected]!" =D

Used it 4 times to temp root never had a problem. Perma root I used the gfree via term emulator method. Adb I cannot get to work.
Nonsense!

I hope you all realize that there's a sticky in the General section that covers this.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App

Yup I see some people still recommending the "one click" Visionary root in some forums. Ouch. I will say though that it seems fine for temprooting. I used it for that, and like some other people on this thread, proceeded to use Gfree to gain permroot. I think many uninformed may be tempted by that pretty little box on Visionary that says "Attempt Permroot Now" though.....

I tried last night to revive a g2 brick and I got sign errors

you used the leaked tmous ginger rom, renamed it to PC10IMG.zip, put it in the root of sdcard and powered up while pressing volume down?

I did oem ruu and did fastboot flash.zip and 12 signature errors

ah, i see - did some digging and found out that the leak is partitions dumps, not official rom. Already changed the first post.
Too bad we still have no remedy for those bricks.
Let's allow this thread to sink until the right time comes.

update 2 on page 1, post 1

Yup glad to see this up and hope see lot of re living g2's and bad part no root for new leak

Thanks for this information! I don't really have the need to root my phone, and temproot is convenient when I need it.

Confirmed working.
Thanks.

[Q] Root Legend:Using Unrevoked (latest updates from the unlockr)

Hi guys,
just checked theunlockr.com today and saw this:
sorry, cant post links.
just check theunlockr.com for how to root legend using unrevoked
It has been updated on 22nd Sept 2010.
Has anyone tried it?
Seems you can root and use custom roms without downgrading.
Is it possible?
I'm curious about this as well. The post on Unlockr clearly references the legend, but the FAQ page at unrevoked doesn't list it as one of the supported models.
Has anyone tried this?
just check the video they have posted, they are using an EVO as an example, but the video says it is the same for all the devices.
So hopefully it should work.
Waiting for someone to try it
someone who hasn't rooted his phone yet. Here is the link for I brave volunteer:
http://theunlockr.com/2010/09/22/how-to-root-the-htc-legend-unrevoked-method/
Cool. This has the same limitations as other root methods though, yeah? Such as not having proper access to the /system partition, or am I living in the past?
I so want to try but don't know how to unroot
I think you can also flash custom roms after rooting by this method.
In the last sentence it has instructions on how to load a custom rom and custom recovery.
Has anyone successfuly rooted using this method.

Oh, come on. Why do I keep getting this? Why can some post the word "no" without issue, and I have to write unnecessarily long posts?
I have tried it on a stock 2.03 rom...Fail.. Freezes the phone..
I will now downgrade to 1.31 and then try again....
i'm going to try it right now with 1.31 rom... one moment....
it doesn't detect my phone... i will try to fix it
I just want to tell you both good luck. We're all counting on you.
Oops
Wow did I kill this thread...
looking at the posts i think i will wait before trying it.
I dont have much information about roting and stuff.
well its time i read up a few rooting posts...
now where is that search button...
An update from the unlockr.com comment section,
2 guys tried it, but were not successful.
But they were on a mac.
Any one rooted over here using this method on windows with the HBOOT drivers?

Yes. For some phones there's "unrevoked forever" that will unlock your NAND and give you r/w on /system. Right now the welcome message in #unrevokedtest is "Testing will resume on future versions when we have them. Thanks to all for your support. Next train: HTC Desire (maybe Legend) S-OFF. Est arrival: unknown." S-OFF means permanent NAND unlock.
The big difference between unrevoked and other root methods is that it will really flash a custom recovery image, not fake-flash.
Quite correct.
The last info I got from Matt was that an early command in their rooting procedure already fails and that Legend apparently is quite different from other phones.
Damn! thats quiet bad.
so are they trying to sort it out or is it gonna remain that way.
I had seen the unrevoked team twitter post informing they were working on Legend, but then there were no updates later.
hopefully they are busy creating more good stuff for the community.

So unrevoked³ is the same as current rooting method where you need to use the ROM Manager to boot into ClockWorkMod or a batch script (vs just launching recovery with VOL - & POWER) and having no access to /system?

P.S. you might want to check out app brain and see how many users have downloaded this app today alone, before you pass judgement on any one. AND READ ALL THE COMMENTS.

Its the fact that the OP said "HTC root is finally here." Its not finally here, its been here for a long time.
No one is passing judgement, we are just saying root is not new...even for .7. That app might be new, but root is not.
P.S. if those 100's of Hero users running .7 had read XDA, or done a simple Google search, they would have known you can root. .7 hasn't been out for 6 months, so you could have used Androot.
At any rate, enjoy your rooted phone.

Exactly. I've been playing with rooting devices since I had a HTC Mogul running WinMob.
These one-click solutions are nice and all but are usually the polish to an otherwise multi-step solution that has been around for quite a while.
But it worked with the ROM you would have had 6 months ago when you said you started searching.

are you using regaw's root for .7 method???
if so i would say go to theimpaler747 thread for cyanogenmod Q&A, the OP is VERY helpful. I used regaw's root and my freind as well, worked fine for our heros, reread the steps just to make sure you didn't miss anything.
I tried all these one click solutions on mine with the .7 upadate and they didn't work. I looked around for hours like most noobs do before they post... and the only thing that worked for me was to run the RUU to get it back to basics.
So my little first contribution/suggestion, if it's worthy, would be to note in this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572) where it says .6 underlined, to read .6 and above .7.8.9..ect.
Good luck to the OP.

I ruu'ed back to 2.1 and then accepted all the updates and used superoneclick it worked.
None of the one click stuff worked for me. Trying to get http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572 to take and everything worked accept the "Superuser Permission". I'll try from scratch in the morning. Point is, for me, the one click stuff didn't seem to work. At least the manual way is a step in the right direction. Remember to load the older 2.1 in the second thread.

Lost phone..new one came with stock 2.3.4

So I lost my phone..the new one came in last night. And it came with 2.3.4.. I tried to down grade it..followed all the instructions from the forum and everything worked fine..until the bootloader part. It said that it couldn't find the
PD15img.zip file when I put it in the root of the sd card. And then I followed the FAT32 method to make the phone read my sdcard..but that still Didn't work..now what?? Used the search bar but could find anything..

Look in the vision g2 section I was in the same boat as you there is a tut in those forums for downgrading to 2.2.1 with adb it also works for mt4g wish I still had link but its there
Same here... Lost my phone and received the replacement yesterday (off course version 2.3.4). Turned out it is a refurbished, the speaker not working, the earpiece not working. I missed another release of lovely Miui
I just happened to see this post and am curious what the problem is... Why are you downgrading it???
I have a Mytouch 4g (HTC Glacier) which was having issues and I just got the replacement. I have not even turn it on, but I have not doubt it will be 2.3.3-- their latest OTA udpate.
Is there going to be any problem rooting this?? Again, it alarmed me that people were trying to downgrade..
Has the firmware/bootloader changed???

There is no method to root 2.3.4 yet. That's why people have to downgrade.
Do you mean like downgrade from 2.3.4 to 2.2.1 root it, and then upgrade to 2.3.4?
But the only way to do that is if we had the stock 2.3.4 rom, which we don't have, correct?
So I can skip the root and wait, or I can downgrade and be able to use 50% of the apps which I would otherwise be unable to use as they require root.
This sucks.... I am sure someone is working hard on this... but I am surprised there has not been any method (even one that was risky -- as in one typo and you've bricked it) figured out by someone...
Ummm.. Next question then, Can anyone tell me any obvious benefits of the TMO 2.3.4 stock? Is it fast, or mediocre? Or is it just worthless due to the fact that you cannot root it?

Didn't quite understand what you mean but yes, if you got the phone pre-installed with TMO's 2.3.4 then there's no way to root that. You would have to downgrade back to Froyo then root it.
There really are no benefits to TMO's stock 2.3.4 since CM7 2.3.5, VU's 2.3.4 and MIUI's 2.3.5 GB are all better and faster. And even if you liked TMO's GB version for some reason there are rooted and deodexed versions to flash in the dev section. So there really is no downside to rooting.
And as previously stated, the only way to downgrade would be to use that thread in the G2 section which requires ADB.
If you have any questions I just finished downgrading my replacement phone and and rooting via gfree last night.
And before last night I've never even used ADB before.
Found 2 threads that helped me do just that.
Got it all downgraded then followed a video to root gfree. (mackster248)
(Never rooted that way before either.)
Anyway PM if you need help. Maybe I can help you out.

Yes you would half to downgrade to 2.2.1 to root there is no way to root 2.3.4 right now
Yea, unlike most of the other HTC. Phones that got a 2.3.4 update, revolution doesn't support unlocking the mytouch 4g without a downgrade. On the first page of this thread I posted a link to downgrade and the easiest way I found to root. Someone also posted links on this page. I found a few other root methods but they required you to install apps to gain temp root access or download files on the phones browser. The link I found actually only requires you to dl and unzip a few files to your PC and run maybe 10 or 12 commands in a terminal. Very easy.

DOWNGRADING from 2.3 to 2.2 is possible.

I just accidentally stumbled on it...i'm not sure what files you need.
I know i had taken the old ruu and the rom.zip from it
My rom.zip was renamed PG06DIAG.zip and PG06IMG.zip.
I had a copy of the engineering boot loader...as PG06DIAG.nbh and PG06DIAG.nb0.
I used the fre3vo temp root.......then used the misc.img dump from the thunderbolt root package....and replaced partition 17....then rebooted into the bootloader....it proceeded to do two reflashes...one to the old bootloader....and then the rom.
now that it's known to be doable.....let's pinpoint out the files.
thanks to scaryghoul for telling me one piece i did not know..and thanks to the TB guys who came up with their root/downgrade.
Ok ok wait you got the new ota to downgrade? I must know more! I know how to do some of this stuff. I rooted mine and the wifies old heros. And I really want my shift rooted. Please where do I get the files I need to do this and what steps in what order do I need to do this in?
My free EVO Shift thanks to bestbuy
that's correct...i downgraded a stock 2.3.3 phone shipped to me that way from asurion....i do not use stock phones....ever.

I've de-compiled the RUU exe already and the hboot is locked like fort knox, 2.2 and 2.3 are off set in the security. I would need you to email me your files and finding to test and validate. until then we will push on as planed with the perm root research on 2.3.3
Thanks

I watched this process unfold and have followed it for the last several hours, it's been at least 4 hours(Probably more). I can say that this did work, whether it was a fluke or not, what he did worked for him.

Can he produce the files and steps he took? did he take notes or was this a trial by error hiccup?
please see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1218580&page=7
Just a thought.. And maybe i'm beating a dead horse here so excuse me.... What about the Dec '10 froyo RUU? Can't we decompile the exe file, remove or alter the version check and signature check, recompile and try to revert to froyo? Or is the encryption yhe main issue? I know someone has had to think of this....
I have 3 bad esn shifts I bought oober cheap off ebay and craigslist I am willing to throw under the bus for everyones cause.. I can test or send them out to whomever I need to close the book on this and get exploit dev running a little closer to victory.

i'll just say this...between me and scary ghoul...we've worked out what happened...i'll try and reproduce it if possible...if you can get me a 2.3.3 ruu link i'll definitely reproduce it...
and you already quoted what i did....yet said it was impossible....the ruu generates a signed file.
okay..so scary found me the full gb update...i'm going to test it shortly.
i can now reproduce the downgrade for sure.
Omg omg omg omg.... Im getting excited. Finally hope for us 2.3.3ers
Awesome job otaking!
Wow! Awesome work man! I thought the day would never come. Is this a safe thing to try as outlined in the development section?
Got my wife a shift but it came with 2.3
Now there's hope!

Take a look at that thread, should clear up any issues/questions you have.
blah
i'm lucky i guess. my recovery is 2.2 rooted. went back to it again last week to get the new prl and update profile then back to a nightly.

today's OTA update from Sprint - Q&A time!

to hopefully decrease the number of posts from members in the coming days about the new OTA that Sprint/HTC released today (but will not officially "push" to devices until January 24,) I would like to point out some things to new members as well as veterans, as we see this happen every time a new OTA is pushed.
latests news/updates in bold.
flashing lights reminder: IF YOU ARE ROOTED, DO NOT UNROOT TO GET THIS OTA UPDATE FROM SPRINT. YOU WILL LOSE THE ABILITY TO RE ROOT AS REVOLUTIONARY DOES NOT WORK YET WITH THE NEW HBOOT 2.18
1. Number one rule, and i will cap this DO NOT ACCEPT A OTA UPDATE IF YOU ARE ROOTED. it has been said many many times here, and members with rooted phones do it anyways. why risk it???? we all saw the gingerbread debacle last year.
2. New HBoot. it seems the new ota update has a new h-boot, 2.18, and from what it seems and this may remain to be seen 100% it is not unlockable with revolutionary. i can not confirm this personally. EDIT: seems the new 2.18 hboot is preparing the evo4g to be added to the unlock bootloader list at htcdev. we await word on when this might be official from htc. UPDATE: seems Captain_Throwback has a way to get your hboot down to 2.10 to use unrevoked. the process is long but it does work, as I have tested it myself.
http://themikmik.com/showthread.php...18-HBOOT-with-HTCDev-com-No-More-Watermark!-"
4. Why the update? The big part of this update was to remove CIQ from the evo's. yay. There were small improvements to Peep (the htc twitter client) and other various fixes. report of battery life being worse than 4.54 have been reported.
5. So when will my favorite rom be updated to the OTA base? well, we already have a stock rom based on the ota (actually 2!) , it is located here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1455340
so this is a start. your favorite rom will be updated by it's developer when the dev has time, last update we had (4.54) we saw a rapid update of roms.
6. Great, so has sense changed at all? No we are still at sense 1.0 sigh.
7. so how about the new kernel? it is now based on htc 2.6.35.10 dated december 21, 20011. Captain_Throwback has extracted the kernel standalone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21654186&postcount=3214
7a. What "hacks" work with the the new stock rom you posted? look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459982
8. i have a question!! well use the search function and see if it has been answered, look here, the Q&A threads, or the dev threads. I hope this will clear down some of the clutter that comes up during this wonderful thing called an OTA update.
I'm far from a sense person, and more seasoned veteran, but good post, and has some good info that people should read. I'd like to believe it'd cut down on threads, but you can't say you didn't try.

They need to set up like a new user pen where they can only post there for the like 2 days and learn those things. Also, glad you're rom is doing well, know you had a semi uphill battle at the start.
Also, I can't WAIT to see all the 'I just updated, and now I wana root" threads.
interesting

Thanks Brad for the update, its good to know whats going on with our EVO.Looks like sprint has a hardon for stopping developement, but as smart as you guys are, you'll get the HBoot unlocked before long.

That was a nightmare that needs to just stay a memory. D:
will try to update this with relevant info as it comes along.
Great thread and maybe some of the noobs will read it before thinking the ota update is the next greatest thing.
It will be once the devs get ahold of it and move along updating their great roms.
Thank Brad for the new info,
Long live the Evo 4g.
Seems your rom file host is struggling this morning. I can not dl either version of your ROM, Brad.
Has it been confirmed that it cannot get S-Off with Revolutionary and SuperTool?
Oh how I hope it can be unlocked... If it cannot, then a deluge of root threads will open and I might be driven to insanity.

Cannot since revolutionary doesn't support the hboot with the new ota
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I feel I must chime in here and make some further clarifications.
Tools like unrevoked and Revolutionary do NOT give you root. This is a very common misconception. What these tools DO give you is NAND access (S-OFF).
In order to obtain root, a custom recovery is required to flash a rooted ROM. In order to flash a custom recovery, you must have NAND access (S-OFF).
If your phone has S-OFF, you can run rooted and non-rooted ROMS just the same. It all depends on what ROM you flash. What gives a ROM root access is having superuser permissions. This is achieved with ChainDD's Superuser app which grants a ROM with SU permissions. If a ROM has the Superuser app cooked in, it has root access.
So it goes a little something like this:
unrevoked/revolutionary --> S-OFF
S-OFF --> allows flashing custom recovery
custom recovery --> allows flashing custom ROMs
custom ROMs with SU permissions cooked in --> gives you root
S-OFF and Root are only indirectly related.
If you have S-OFF, you will ALWAYS have the ability to flash ROMs, even the latest newest releases.
Here's a further example, my own personal experience:
I obtained S-OFF over a year ago using unrevoked3, which permanently granted S-OFF. Since then I have applied every radio, hboot, etc as they have been released. Never lost S-OFF.
Now regarding this latest OTA release, #12 (4.67.651.3), here is what I did. I flashed a stock unrooted/unmodified 4.54 rom. I then went into settings->system updates and checked for the new ota. I downloaded the OTA, and APPLIED the OTA. Applying the update flashed the new hboot, the stock recovery, and the new radios, as well as the new stock 4.67.651.3 ROM.
After it fully completed it's process I reflashed the custom recovery. From there I am free to flash any ROM I wish. What I did was took the new rom into the developer kitchen and rooted it. Then flashed it. Viola, I am on rooted 4.67.651.3 with full access. In actuality I'm running my barebones build currently, linked in my sig.
Once you run unrevoked or revolutionary you should never have to again. They give you permanent S-OFF. You'll always have the ability to flash a custom recovery, even if you accept an OTA update, and flash ANY custom ROM.
I hope this post helps people better understand the whole root and NAND security process.

strange, no problems here, i use dev-host for now, seems it is easier to download there for people in work, etc.
thanks misery for your post. newbies would get confused by all of that, but i still will say to the day i die, lol. do not accept a OTA from sprint if you are rooted. things could go wrong..

Accepting an OTA does indeed cause you to lose root acces. No arguement there. But it's a simple matter of reflashing a custom recovery and flashing a rooted ROM through recovery and bam back to being rooted.
