im running fresh 1.1 and loving it but i may want to try a 1.6 rom...just something to play with until android 2.1 comes in march. which one would you guys recommend? im looking for speed, almost no crashes and pretty much everything works, oh yeah looks are important too.
Far as I know there's only two. Both pretty much Vanilla. Neither has BT. Neither will send an SMS for some handsets.
Try them both.
There are only two 1.6 ROMS, quietcblongs and gbhil. Both are basically the same, as gbhil just takes the "core" of quietcblongs 1.6 and makes some tweaks here and there. Either one has the same stuff working, just keep in mind quietcblongs intention is to have a clean 1.6 AOSP ROM and gbhil has put in some eclair icons and some other aesthetically appealing stuff. Read their threads to find out what's working and what's not, basically bluetooth is a no go, some people have sms issues, no visual voicemail (although MMS was resolved on the last update and that may make the visual voicemail work).
Read on..
Well, fchipm beat me to the punch and offered a recap of my post LOL
Actually gbhil's & quiet's don't have the same working things. gbhil's AOSP is still based off of quiet's 12.31.09 build, so gbhil's speakerphone, BT & MMS don't work. In quiet's latest build, he fixed the speakerphone & MMS, but in turn broke headphones.
Use quiets. It's being actively developed. Mine was just a proof of concept that I used as a testbed to see what I can and can not do while cooking a ROM for the Hero. I keep trying to say that, but it keeps falling on deaf ears

Which you can just flash the 31.12.09 build of quiet's & have the same working things also...
I'd just skip 1.6 and go to 2.0.1 if I were you. I flashed 1.6, and SMS didn't work with my phone. Other than that, I liked it. But I flashed DChadwick's 2.0.1, and WOW. I LOVE it.
im running quiet's AOSP 1.6 + Googlebits
...then metamorphed my way to having all eclair icons + eclair dialer + nexus launcher + nexus power control widget
beyond satisfied now. beautiful, functional, AND blazing fast.

Does your camera work?
No it doesn't... that's the only downside. But I can live without my camera, since all I use it for is taking pictures of ridiculous things I find and putting them on Facebook. If the camera is a deal-breaker, then definitely use 1.6 (if SMS works for you... hopefully it will).

That's what kills me
No camera on the 2.x roms and no SMS on the 1.6's
All I want on my Hero is an AOSP plain Vanilla ROM with those two things working.
"If not now, then when?!"

Would you mind sharing which Metamorph packages you used. I have never used the program before and am a little overwhelmed with all the option by various different people. Thanks in advance.

Hey!! That's the exact same thing i do with the camera. There's not one picture of my face on my facebook, any posts, or updates..just awesome random pictures i upload. Its basically an easy central photo storage.
Just wondering as it seems it's much better out of the box than what we have!
I was also reading the moment forums and it seems there still convinced that we will get the update before them, seemed kinda strange to me!
Thanks

I thought about flashing to see what would happen, but it seems the process is a bit different than on our heros!
don't just flash the leak, you'll very possibly wind up with a nice brick.
LOL Flash the leak and tell us what happens.
Ya I kinda figured that, but I like to take one for the team!
Plus I am so tired of 1.5 and bluetooth crap on 2.1!

What bluetooth crap? I've been running 2.1 since I got my hero (only ran 1.5 long enough to drive home from Best Buy. Already had the rom downloaded and my pc set up for rooting before I even went to buy the phone).
I've never experienced one single problem with bluetooth, across at least 10 different 2.1 roms I've tried.
You'll be giving up a lot of standard features... like pinch to zoom (although I hear they finally got touble tap to zoom). Just FYI

Bluetooth problems seem to be about 50/50 with hero owners!
I seem to be in the 50% that bluetooth sucks ass on any 2.xx rom, and works flawless on 1.5.
Sometimes I wonder if all heros were hand built, it would explain all the different problems some have and some don't!

no i think that everyone uses the BT diffrently ... my BT on the hero suckss ass on 2.1 and works great on 1.5 .. i have a car radio that i can play music form my phone and at the same time do navigation voice ( from the phone also ) ..on 1.5 it works great ..on 2.1 it works for 5min and then both sounds are gone and i get a FC on BT driver , my audio BT headsets on 1.5 works great on 2.1 it just craps out every couple mins ... cant even use it at all...
I guess that explains it. I only use bluetooth for a small headset and file transfers. Both work flawlessly.
I don't use a2dp at all, which now that I think about it, is what I've heard most people say they've had trouble with....
I can do this. Expect a port in 10 minutes, or whenever it's done downloading.

By small headset I assume you mean just a single ear piece?
If thats the case it works great on any Rom I have tried, it just streaming music where it cuts out and skips a minimum of 5 times per minute of song, and forget doing anything else on your phone!

From what I hear there are supposed to be BT enhancements in the update!
I've used stereo bluetooth on dc v1.0 and flipz2.0d without a problem... was only for about ten minutes, but was still longer than 5

Yep, the single earpiece with a mic used for phone calls, not headphones for listening to music.
Even though both uses are transferring audio, they actually use completely different bluetooth profiles, which I suppose explains why one works well and the other doesn't.

Like I said it's 50/50 across the board!
We all agree that we love our Galaxy S devices (or we wouldn't read nor post anything in these forums), but also we all have bugs or certain issues that we'd like to know how to fix or have resolved (not just GPS or battery drain issues people) to make it even more useful in our daily life.
I thought this thread could be useful to help each other give solutions or advice on small but relevant functions of our phones.
I'll start with:
- enabling Skype calls over bluetooth headsets
- I'd really like to have a smooth connection between the phone and the official samsung car dock, most of the time it enters car mode but exits immediately after, forcing me to disconnect and reconnect the dock until it stays properly, I'm assuming a background app or service is causing this but I haven't discovered it yet.
- Still on the car dock issue, I find very annoying having to listen to interference through my car speakers when the phone is not playing any media. Anyone know a fix for this? (besides muting the car audio)
That's it for me for now. Your turn people!

Tbh, Im very happy with my SGS atm.
I was getting a bit bored with 2.2 and 2.2.1, but with 2.3.3 I've added a custom theme (with screen off animation) and some awesome flying animations and wow, the phone feels brand new.
Love the free calls to people with Skype and the free "texts" to people with gtalk.
Saves me a lot on the bill.
Never been happier
My SGS is awesome! But it would be just PERFECT if people stopped making useless topics.
My SGS is awesome but it would be perfect if: it was SGS2
Just joking!
PS: forgive me if i spam by i need 10 posts to be able to post on JUWE's rom forum...

Ginger: debus, goatrip

+1 SGS 2 is a big step up it all comes together .

I'd love to have the option to disable auto-convert SMS into MMS. It's just too annoying. I know the alternatives like GoSMS and Handcent, but I prefer the native Messaging app.
I would LOVE my galaxy if I would not change the rom at every 2-3 days
I must find a favorite rom...and fast!
My SGS is awesome! But it would be just PERFECT if it was an SGSII
My sgs would be perfect if ..... my battery lasted as long as an old nokia
I wish that mine was a little more robust.

Hey guys.
After trying dozens of ROMs for a week, I can't find a good sense rom. Nothing fancy. As close as stock 2.1 sense as I can get. I have a 1024 Tmous HD2. Preferably something like the DFT NAND ROM that I'm sure everyone is familiar with, but without any bugs.
Please?
Thankss
Sense of eclipse ...is to be recommended

I don't think a ROM where you need to use an app to turn off the dang thing is great. As a matter of fact, the only thing I see in NAND development these days are these buggy Sense 3 ROMS, Sense 2.1 ROMs themed to the point of retina destruction and that MIUI crap.
Why has nobody made a stock Desire HD ROM for cLK.
To the OP: If you're a fan of MAGLDR, try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=915159
Only thing wrong is the camcorder doesn't work with the stock HTCCamera.apk. (and another thing wrong with it is that it's for MAGLDR )
there are stock like hd with sense 2.0 which can be used with clk

I don't need any app to turn off the "dang thing" like you said....
Anyway, the issues i knew after 2 weeks of use:
Camcorder with higher resolutian than 320x240 does not work (i'm not a cameraman so it does not affect me...)
Graphical glitches (much less then in other NAND-roms. Really: not disturbing)
Thats it and all what i've noticed in 2 weeks use. ^^
After testing these two weeks, i only can say that the rom is fast, stable and (that's important i think) suitable for everyday use...

Hi,
I'm not sure why you are laying so much importance on such a minor aspect of a great ROM.
Have you actually tried it?
As it happens my power off (stock) button is still working.
But what's the difference between pressing the power button and pressing an app button.
Same result...

Hey guys so ever since I updated to nougat 7.1.1 and now on custom ROMs built on 7.1.1 and currently I'm on benzo ROM. I'm trying to figure out whether this is a new feature of nougat? Whenever I connect my Bluetooth devices to my phone it now has a bar beside the Bluetooth icon is it SHOWING BATTERY LIFE OF THE BLUETOOTH HEADSETS?! IT happens with both my beats studio wireless and my jaybird x2s. Can someone explain if this is infact what I think it is.... I can't tell honestly. I'll post a screenshot down below.
If it truly is then this is awesome why is this feature not marketed?! Us android users have been jealous of iOS capabilities of showing battery life of Bluetooth headsets for so long and android never had this feature until now!
