[Q] Prompt to install to SD OR main memory, how to? - myTouch 3G, Magic General

Hi there, I'd like to know if there is any way for the system to prompt me if I want the app to be installed in the main memory or in the SD card. I know you can change the settings to make the system install automatically wherever you want, but I want some apps installed to the main memory (specially those that has widgets, so the widgets don't crash at reboot or resetting Launcher), and others to be installed at the SD card (those apps which I don't care about losing performance, but I'd like to have my phone running smoothly, so I don't want to install many apps to the main memory).
Plus, whenever I reboot (actually turning off then on again), the shortcut icons to the apps installed in SD card all go to that standard app icon (the .apk system icon), and I have to reset Launcher to get the icons again. That happens almost always. Is there any way to fix it?
System info: running Froyo (FroyoRedux CM6 Mod), Magic 32A (even though I don't think this last info matters).

I should install these applications in Main Memory or Storage Card?

I have installed HTC Kaizer Home Plugin, HTC X-Button, HTC Audio Manager, JUVS CommMgr6 button, reTouched Dialer, etc.
These applications I installed in the Storage Card.
I notice when i start my HTC Softbank X01HT, it become slower... until I have run most of the application, then only the speed become more stable.
So, I wondering I should install these applications into Main Memory or Storage Card? Will it be more stable if I install into Main Memory?
i just think that every app you installing tooks a small part of your hermes memory.... so as many startup application you have as you hermes will slow down
understand that.
what i worried is if i install those applications into storage card, it will load slower than if i install into the main memory.
will this happen?

No, not really - except you turn off or soft reset your device entirely, then it takes a while until your pda read out all contens on SD card - other than that they load as fast as installing in the phone. I always install my apps on SD, except for system application, never had any problems.
It's my understanding that you should install programs that run on startup, like today plugins, into main memory.
This is so that if the programs are called to run before the storage card is initialized they are available.
I believe it was MikeChannon that said this...

Yeah, might be a good advice even though I never install in phome memory as long as I can avoid it. But you shouldn't take me as good example anyway (I never had issues with installing everything on SD card but I might have been only lucky up to now!)
How about this solution?:
Try to install your application on SD card first! If they do not run properly after starting up your phone then just uninstall them and reinstall them in your phone memory ...
The only 3 programs I installed in phone memory are:
SPB MOBILE SHELL (It won't install on SD)
RESCO EXPLORER 2007 (to be able to use Explorer, REGISTRY PLUGIN and FTP even when I switch SD cards or card fails)
Microsoft Reader (because of activation)

not enough storage on my phone ?

Hi first post...new phone.....great product, I love it......to get to the point, I have down loaded a couple of simple apps from the in-house market place, the second one "i spy wifi" wouldnt complete because "quote" ...reqs newer version microsoftR.net compact framework, this wouldnt download because I dont have enough free space, even though there is a 4 gb micro card with loads of room.........how do i get things onto the card storage?.......can I put a 16gb card in place of the 4 ?
cheers
Yes you can use 16gb card, normally when you install an app, it give you the option to install on device memory or Storage Card. I install everything on the the Storage Card and I've got a rude amount of apps installed .
Hi, do watch the cache in the main storage - this can fill up.
And, when you install apps from the Market Place it seems these automatically go to main storage and there is no option to install to storage card.
I'm using a 16 gb card with no problems.
thanks for the reply, not noticed an option offered for phone/card storage...will look for it next time....cheers..........
Just to follow on from this can all cabs and apps be downloaded on the card rather than the device? For instance I have cabs for home page transparencies and max manila, text removal on home page etc. Also cab games, official hot fixes, clocks, market place apps as well. And these are ALL on t he device.
Are there certain apps or items that MUST go on the device or can everything go on the card?

Anyone?
Pretty much everything can go on the card.
but I cannot seem to move anything onto my card, am I missing something ?
Just use file explorer to move the cabs to your storage card. Once you have installed cab's you can do what you want with them, move or delete them. When installing them it will prompt to install on the device or storage card. Choose storage card.
I always install to the storage card but when you install using Market Place it doesn't give you the option it just installs to the device. Does anyone know if this can be changed or if the cab files is stored somewhere so that you can uninstall from device and install on the card??
As far as I know, isn't possible to choose a different location when installing from Marketplace. However, is possible to move the applications from the phone memory to the SD card. To do that you have to use this app. Although there are some applications that you must install in the phone memory.
Many thanks, I will give it a go. I already have SK Tools do you know if that has a similar feature as I've not quite got to grips with everything it can do?

[DE-ODEX ROM Space Saver] Phone "Running out of space"? Move /data/app to /system/app

[DE-ODEX ROM Space Saver] Phone "Running out of space"? Move /data/app to /system/app
This is for those who, like me, are NOT using A2SD.
I avoid a2sd for several reasons including the following
1 - I switch/flash a lot of different ROM's, very frequently, and don't find it handy to worry about what's on my SD card every time - I'm always on the go
2 - Apps seem to run faster when on the phone itself
3 - I haven't really run out of space on my phone (and now have found a trick for when I do)
4 - I have the phone SD card mounted to the computer pretty often - maybe someone can confirm for me that A2SD still works when the SD card is mounted? I suspected that they don't, but since it's a different partition maybe I'm wrong?
Neither here nor there, I avoid the complexities of A2SD for the above reasons, as well as the more basic reason that it makes things slightly more complicated in general.
THAT BEING SAID:
I noticed, in Root Explorer, that I have 47MB available in my /system/app area, and only 14MB left in my /data/app area.
Clearly, the system reserves a certain amount of space for each one, for its own reasons. Neither here nor there, I'd like to sort of change these numbers around. I'd like to be able to install more Apps (which typically install in /data/app) but not be running out of Space (and I'm not using A2SD). Here I go.
This trick requires no more than either Root Explorer, or adb pull/push, then adb shell > rm -r /data/app/whatever.apk.
Example 1:
Open Root Explorer
Long-press com.bero.sdrescan (SDRescan).
Press Move
Go ..
..
System
App
Press Move
(reboot phone).
SDRescan still works like a charm, but is now in /system/app. It may show (in, for example, Titanium Backup) that it is a System app instead of a normal App now. That's OK. I can live with that.
I also have just moved com.biggu.shopsavvy.apk (ShopSavvy) to the /system/app folder, Development.apk (Dev Tools) to the /system/app folder, and a few others, with NO problems so far.
Immediately after moving said files, I reboot, and all is well. I had SenseUI pop up with a force close after moving a few, but a reboot seems to make all well.
I now no longer have the 'Low disk space' situation, and all my apps work perfectly (even the ones I've moved).
Market links DO seem to stay retained for this, but I have a FEELING that the apps will move back to /data/app that you moved over, if you 'Update' apps. I could be wrong here.
NOTE:
This will probably make your phone harder to back up, or if you play on flashing a new version of your ROM over this current version of your ROM (atten: kaosfroyo users, etc), you may wind up with duplicates of Apps.
Why?
if Maps installs in your /data/app as com.google.android.maps.apk (or whatever), and you move it to /system/app, then flash a newer Kaos v.20 or something, which puts com.google.android.maps.apk back in /data/app, you will have two MAPS apps.
I am using this on my NEVER-FLASHING-OVER-IT-WITHOUT-A-WIPE Ivan's 1.0 De-Odexed. (of course I say this as he's working on 1.1, but titanium backup is my friend).
Anyway, I hope that this helps a lot of people who aren't using A2SD, but need more space on their phones to install more apps (or because Browser and maps cache are piggies). I now have space for dozens more apps. Love it.
Good luck, and I can't be responsible for what you do to your phone.
MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP first. Thank you.
1. Why worry about your sd card? I haven't seen anyone mess their sdcard because of a2sd.
Plus its not like the cards are expensive you can get a class 6 8gb card for about $25 after S&H.
2. I own a class 6 card and i feel the apps run the same if not faster from the phone.
3. I ran out of space by quite a bit, but it was because i stuck with sense.
4. The card can be mounted and you will still be able to use the apps, even if the ext partition is mounted, i only found out this recently when i was messing with a few scripts.
So I guess everyone has had their experiences and for now all my experiences with a2sd have been pleasant ones.
I just thought People should hear both sides of the argument.

[Q] any solution to reaaarangement of icons

I have recently updated to froyo & have transferred a lot many apps to SD Card. However, whenever, I restart phone or unmount & remount the SD Card, the apps on SD become unavailable, thus showing only the default android app icons. After some time, when SD apps show up, the whole arrangement changes, whicjh is somewhat inconvenient to find perticular app.

More info please, like how the arrangement changes, and what launcher you are using and what icon sorting method you are using.
I'll assume you are using touchwiz, that the sorting is based on when it was installed, and that the rearrangement always puts the sd card apps after the phone apps (in a random matter?). I dont have touchwiz right now, so the only solution I can give is to to try a different launcher (suggestions: ADW, Launcherpro, Zeam, Go launcher). I dont know if you can change the icon sorting method in touchwiz, if so then put it so that it sorts by name, that should help, or maybe toggle automatic sorting if thats an option
You can manually sort by opening the app drawer / press menu / click on edit
If you use ADWLauncher EX there is a an option to backup and restore, presets and desktop configuration.. you could give that a go m8.
Thanks for reply. I am using touchwiz. I will try ADWLauncherEx & see if problem is resolved
if your using stock touchwiz there is an application to sort apps inside the appdrawer alphabetically.

check it out might help you
i know what you are trying to say...
the problem comes that the phone first loads the phone apps in the same pattern as you have selected i.e. if you have settings in the first window and my files in second, they will remain in the same place but the apps moved to sd are loaded when the media scanner is completed and so they rearrange themselves as alphabetic order in the remaining space of application window...
even i got very tired of rearranging them everytime as its very annoying...
the problem will come when ever you go in mass storage mode or unmount your sd as after you remount it the phone starts media scanner and rearranges the icons
solution--->install kyrillos or any other custom rom and partition your sd card in recovery,
after that all the apps directly get installed in your partitioned space and you dont even need to move them to sd card..
i have 75 apps installed now on my phone and all are still in my phone and not being moved to sd card still i have 175 mb free in phone and the problem does not come even if i reboot my phone or connect it in mass storage mode to the pc...
side affects-
1) - you cannot later access the partitioned space for storing other media
i.e. if you currently have 7gb card and you partition 1gb from recovery then even computer and the phone will show total space in sd card = 6 gb
i have a 8 gb card and have partitioned 512 mb so i hardly felt any diff in total space
2) - if you have apps in partitioned space and you remove your sd card while phone is on, it will be like you are removing the main hard disk form a computer while it was on..so result will be that the phone will immediately freeze and turn off..
another advantage of partition---you can also partition you sd card's memory as swap memory will the phone can use as a secondry ram hence you can increase your ram to 512 mb ( 256 mb internal and 256 (max supported) on external)...
if you liked what i was saying please press the thanks button...

Disappearing Apps - Problem on Two Different ICS ROMs

I have verified this problem with two different ICS ROMS. Apps seem to migrate to the SD Card. This breaks a number of apps, including Aldiko reader and many games.
I first encountered this with the Reloaded Rom 1.01; found that the same issue occurred after updating to 1.1. Did a clean install (Factory Reset, Wipe Cache, Wipe Dalvik cache, load ROM) for the Energy ROM and found that the same issue occurs.
Originally I blamed this on the Apps2SD function in ROM Toolbox; but the behavior repeats even without this.
The only solution that I have found is to install or reinstall the application, then to immediately set it to run on tablet, not SD card. Which is a pain to have to do.
Any thoughts?
In cyanogenmod settings there's settings for that under applications or if that doesn't work titanium backup can move apps
Sent from my HellfireKindle using Tapatalk 2
DJ, you can manually try to move applications back from SD card under Apps then Move to SD card or Move to Tablet, and Titanium lets you restore apps, but unless I am missing something there is no way to set the default.
Can you clarify if I have missed something? And thanks.

Sorry for being vague. in titanium if you go to the app and long press it gives you the extended options one is to move the app and all data to where ever you want it SD or memory.. and under setting like cyanogen settings or applications i cant remember it gives you the option for default app instal location
I'll see what I can find about default settings in ICS. Titanium does what the built-in ICS app manager does, which requires adjusting per app. I was hoping for something more, shall I say, elegant.
Anyway, "thanks" clicked and I am grateful for your help.

lol thanks... just wondering dose it really affect that many apps i usually move all my games to sd anyways
Where's my water included! And I don't have a backup.. :-(
Will any apps run on the SD card
I have the same issue on the ICS Reloaded ROM. Many of my daughters games disappear. I have used Titanium to move them to internal storage. Currently every app I have on the KF is on internal storage because it was installed there by default or I moved it there so it wouldn't disappear. My question is do these ICS ROM's have an issue running any app from the SD or just certain ones? This whole mess is causing my internal storage to disappear.
What you wiped was not a "clean install." You didn't mention wiping /system. Possible old remnants from previous install screwing things up.
