I have windows 7 64 bit and it worked fine until out of nowhere my pc stopped recognizing my phone as a storage drive. i have tried multiple roms, and it makes no difference. The option to mount in the pull down curtain menu is no longer there, am i the only one who has had this problem?
If it turns out to be defective, is there any way to return the phone to stock, like with the ruu, that does not require a usb connection?

Unplug your phone from computer, enable USB debugging
uninstall HTC sync and HTC drivers from computer
Then Reinstall HTC Sync.
then plug in your phone once its done installing
Tried, thats a no-go. any other ideas?
Forgot to note that the htc sync option DOES appear in the pull down menu when usb is connected.

I am also having a problem with Windows 7. I deleted and reinstalled HTC sync and drivers and got "no driver found" for ADB. While it was installing it said it was unable to find a Windows Vista folder so that could be part of the problem
I dont think thats my problem, my computer doesnt see adb on the device manager list.. i have tried on a windows xp pc and it doesnt see my phone either, or ask me to install anything. so there is no way to RUU without usb?
uninstall any programs that may use adb usb... easy tether, pdanet, htc sync, the cdma workshop and htc diag drivers if you were trying to get msl using your own method, go to device manager and remove android usb devices, and then plug your phone back in. Also use a task killer to ensure none of the above programs are running on your phone, in case one got corrupted. if still no go let me know... I am running win 7 64 bit so can help compare, etc. if need be.
Well part of the problem is that android usb devices does not even show up in the device manager. should i still try to uninstall adb from my pc?
okay, under programs and features in control panel, uninstall htc driver and htc sync, restart computer and redownload and install htc sync from their website, and try that.
I tried those steps, still didnt work.
after you reinstall sync and plug in your phone, what happens? does the driver installer pop up and install? what does it say?
does android usb devices show up under device manager? are you sure it's not your cable (just cause it charges and makes a sound on the comp like it's connecting doesn't mean the data lines are fully intact and working). If need be, I found a cable for a dollar at the dollar store. It's not the exact same end but the usb mini a
it fits and works fine
nothing pops up when i plug in. and also nothing appears in device manager. htc sync does actually show up on my phone when i plug in though.
i dont think its the cable.. it looks ok on the outside.

Interesting, interesting. In device manager, you stated that ADB doesn't show up? Well, does anything pertaining to Android show up at all?
Nothing pertaining to android at all. I hope im not screwed, because then i would have paid 7 bucks a month extra for insurance for no reason.

That's exactly how I felt when I got it working. Well i'm glad it worked for you. Hopefully it works for the OP.
i followed thos steps to a T, and still no luck. That guide failed me at the step when you select your phone from devices and printers; my phone is not there at all. I also tried manually installing the drivers, and it says that method of install is not supported.
try this.... go to windows/system32/drivers folder. Find adroidusb.sys, back up this file and then delete, and try plugging in your phone and seeing if it reinstalls drivers then
When I plug my Vibrant in by USB on WinXP I am getting a device not recognized error. I get nothing when plugging into a Mac. I've tried multiple cables and I have changed the USB options to each option.
I have rooted the phone and installed the GPS fix.
Any suggestions for fixing this would be appreciated.
Thank you
Load the galaxy s drivers, will work after that

What about for Mac OS? The phone doesn't show up when I mount the cards. Is there a way to get mass storage to work on a Mac that doesn't involve turning on USB debugging?
I'm not a mac person, sorry, hopefully someone else can chime in on that.
Edited, if you go to the thread i linked, the op states for linux and mac the android sdk drivers should work, hope that helps.

When you plug it in are you sliding down the notification bar and selecting the USB Connected > Mount option?
As well when you are done you have to Unmount when you are done.
Yeah, like kizer said too, mount the device. I was assuming that step is s.o.p.

Yes, I had a G1 for years and that always worked perfectly. The only way to get my Vibrant to show up though is to use USB debugging mode.
I just did some quick googling and it seems mac users are doing exactly what you said you don't want to do, setting usb debugging on, and that seems to be a quick fix. I'm sure there is more info out there in cyberspace, but if debugging works, I say go with it. I always have debugging turned on, incase I need that oops adb action.

When i use it on my Mac, i have to enable USB debugging. Then both drives (internal and SD) pop up just fine.
So it looks like someone answered this, just confirmation then.
Another theory
My Vibrant has mounted normally and without any problems on WinXP sp3 and Win7-64 systems, but I have also run into the occasional system where it will not work at all.
On the systems where things worked normally it was never required that I load a special Samsung USB driver for the phone. The standard mass storage drivers included with Windows worked fine.
My new theory is that there may be a drive letter collision issue in some cases. On the laptop that I use with my phone 90% of the time the phone always mounts as drive G: and H:.
On other machines I have noticed that the phone always seems to mount as G: and H: even if E: and F: are available. I'm not sure how/why it always gets mounted using those letters. It may somehow be defaulting to that because G: and H: were the first letters available on the first system I plugged it into.
I have a Win7-64 desktop machine that will not currently allow the phone to connect. This particular machine already has G: and H: assigned to hard drive partitions.
I will probably experiment with temporarily changing the letter assignments to see if I can get the phone to mount. It's worth a shot I guess.
Sorry, I didn't go into as much detail as I could have.
I've installed those drivers listed here as well as any other I could find. I've tried USB debugging mode, changed all the USB modes listed. I've mounted and unmounted the SD cards using the settings menu when doing this.
Is it possible that there is some background service that should be running? Or is it possible that something in the firmware is screwed up? I guess it's also possible that the USB plug itself is messed up?
Thanks for the help.
I used to use this forum years ago when I had a HTC WinMo phone, it seems to have lost any record of past posts due to inactivity.
As kizer stated in his post, are you mounting from the prompt on your phone's notification bar? Once plugged into your pc or mac, you slide down the notification bar from the top of your home screen, click on the usb prompt then select mount. Thats the only step you didn't list that may have been missed.
Edited - the prompt in the notification area may say mass storage, my home pc fried last week so i cant test it to get you the specific verbage.

I don't get any prompt at all. At this point I will just install CM6.1 when it comes out and hope that fixes the issue. It's usable for now. I can transfer files using WiFi File Explorer for now.
It helps if you know if you are USB 1.0 or 1.1 or 2.0....or even 3.0.
Also, are the USB ports powered ?
Are the USB ports on the computer in question filled with dust and dirt ?
Contacts corroded ?
Are the ports recognized by the operating system correctly (you know, drivers loaded since it's old arsed WinXP) ?
Do you undertand how to operate a computer at a higher level than just being able to install viral apps ?
Malware ?
Trojans ?
I could go on all day.
It works fine here, on Win7x64, WinVistax64, and *nix.
That is bizarre you should get a least something in your taskbar.
Click for larger photos if you like.
Heres what my looks like and of course I have the taskbar pulled down so you can see it.
Below that is the box you would click to say connect it.
I did have a freind who didn't realize he could pull down the notification bar. Could that be the case here?
Op, you do know you can pull down the bar at the top of your screen, the one with your clock and battery icon etc., put your finger up there and swipe in a downward motion.

I have tried this on a corporate IT managed WinXP system (running Kapersky AntiVirus) and a currently updated Snow Leopard MacBook. I could give details all day as well. Both are in good condition and very likely not the issue.
Seriously, if you have nothing useful to say don't say anything at all.

they don't understand i had this issue too man and i fixed it.
first go to that link and download those drivers... use the uninstall app to uninstall the drivers off your computer.
while your doing that go into your phone setting>applications>usb settings
make sure it says "ask on connection" (you can change it later) go back and go to development to turn on usb debugging.
reinstall drivers, connect phone wait for the drivers to load. the un-connect phone turn debugging off.
and it was fixed for me.
hope this helps
Okay.. I'm almost on the verge of being desperate for a fix for this. I still can't get my windows or Linux computer to recognize my phone in download or mass storage mode. I've talked to adrynalyne and he told me to try heimdall. No luck. There's a new post made about this issue nearly every day on here.
At this point I would be happy with finding a way to flash the modem without using Odin. I know we have a ton of AMAZING devs here, do you guys think we can try to figure this out? I think it is definitely something beyond drivers, considering the sudden increase in people having the problem.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App
Maybe this is a dumb question, but have you tried all of the usb ports, even the ones on the back of the pc? And how about rebooting phone while connected to pc? Usb debugging on, off... all of these worked for me at one time.

Its not a dumb question. Thank you for trying to help. Yes, I have tried just about anything you can think of. Tried Linux, tried windows, tried 64 bit drivers, tried 32 bit drivers, tried every single USB port. Nothing.

Firewall? I remember a firewall causing problems with my old phone. I didn't check for my fascinate, got lazy and just turned it off before doing anything. I highly recommend not being connected to anything other than your phone if you do turn off your firewall.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Thanks for the suggestion. I have even tried that. As far as I know Ubuntu doesn't really have a firewall. although I could be wrong. And none of the devs seem to be able to come up with anything either.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App
Based on the described symptoms, I would say either the USB port on the phone has bit the dust, or you have a bad USB cable. I would try a different, known good USB cable and see what happens.
Posted from my EB01 SuperClean Fascinate with Voodoo
A little far-fetched, but I'll try anyway ...
From Windows:
- Don't plug in your Fascinate
- Create a new SYSTEM environment variable called "DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES" and set it to "1" (without the quotes)
- Open Device Manager
- View / Show Hidden Devices
- If you see any of the following, delete them (right-click on the device and select "uninstall", check the box that says "Delete the driver software..." if available:
ADB Interface / SAMSUNG Android Composite ADB Interface
Disk Drives / SAMSUNG SCH-I500 Card USB Device
DVD/CD-ROM Drives / SAMSUNG UMS CD-ROM USB Device
DVD/CD-ROM Drives / SAMSUNG CD-ROM USB Device
Modems / SAMSUNG * (* = anything that starts with SAMSUNG)
Ports (COM & LPT) / SAMSUNG *
Universal Serial Bus Controllers / SAMSUNG *
- Uninstall "SAMSUNG USB Driver for Mobile Phones" from Control Panel / Programs and Features
- Re-install the proper Samsung drivers "Generic_CDMA_i500_Showcase_USB_Driver_V1.3.550.0.msi".
- See what happens when you plug it in next time and let us know
So I followed the instructions to a T. It installed all of the drivers when I plugged the phone in. But get the USB device not recognized when i go to download mode.
Strangely, Odin does recognize the phone when I put it into dun mode. But it won't flash anything.

I would definately try a new cable. I used one that was identical to the one that came with my fascinate but it was from an old phone of mine and it had the same problem, and make sure its a "data" cable

I tried to connect my nexus 4 to my PC , but it would not recognize it under my computer like it should so I could drag and drop. I tried mounting it as MTP and PTP and neither would be recognised.
I ended up transferring my pictures using adb, but I don't know why it didn't work the standard way.
Anyone have any ideas?

Is Android debugging on?

Maybe you've got the same problem that we have here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2005437
Maybe you try:
A different USB port
A different USB cable
Uninstall existing drivers + installing the drivers again
A different computer
And if all that didn't help you can join us in the above mentioned thread. We don't have a solution yet but maybe we can draw some attention to the issue.
All the driver seem to be fine and the nexus 4 is recognised via adb. It used to work before so I don't what's wrong.
Edit: yes USB debugging was on

By George, I fixed it I went into device manager I right clicked on SAMSUNG android phone then nexus 4 under that section, then I clicked update driver. Then I clicked on browse my computer for driver software after I clicked on let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer and I select mtp. The all of a sudden auto play came up with my device connected as a camera (ptp)
Now all my phones show up under my computer
MTP uses a completely different driver from ADB. So you can have one working but not the other.

Hello.
Three weeks ago my Nexus 4 is recognized by my three computers (work, home and friend) like a drive. Now it is not anymore recognized by friend 's computer: I hear the sound of connection but no change in file manager. However it works fine on two other computers (home and work). In addition the Nexus 4 of my friend is always recognized by these three computers.
I tried to install N4 drivers on Friend 's computer. No change, my Nexus 4 is not recognized by friend's computer. I tried the debug mode too. No change. And the nexus 4 of my friend works on the three comptuters. Very frustrating .
These two Nexus 4 is updated with 4.2.2, in stock rom, not rooted, 16Go, v11.
Does someone could help me to solve this problem without saving my data and then restoring to factory values?:highfive:
Thanks.
I forgot to write that i used only one usb wire on the same usb port. To be sure that the problem is not the wire or the usb plug.
Do you currently have USB Debugging turned on? Turn it off and see what happens...the reason I say is that my work PC can either see is as MTP with USB Debugging off or through adb with it on - not both.

Maybe try to uninstall the driver using the device manager?

Thanks i will try your solutions tomorrow. But these solutions doesn't explain why one Nexus 4 works on the friend 's computer and the other Nexus 4 doesn t work: same wire and same usb plug.
I plugged the nexus on my computer. And I unistalled the driver of nexus in my device manager unplugged and plugged again the nexus. And then let windows recognize the nexus and install his own compatible driver. Thanks nhatters.
The problem was that for run application named carbon I had to install in computer first the adb driver and carbon for computer. And this driver does not recognize my nexus which have not carbon (for mobile install).
i had the same problem few minutes ago .. i just turned USB Debugging on and voila the PC detected my nexus 4.
Aha i had the same problem i just lowered the notification shade selected usb device n selected camera option and reverted back to the media transfer and that fixed it

Same problem for me on Windows 7. I have tried everything - different cables, different ports, enable/disable USB debugging. Even uninstalled drivers etc. It is getting detected on Windblows and is showing up in the taskbar as an USB device with a green mark. But it is not showing up as a drive or the MTP device. Frustrating to no end!
im gonna try to research in microsoft website which drivers are not originally installed in my computer and delete all the wird ones maybe some other driver from another hardeare like another cell phone or something is interfering. Hope I dont delete something that will make my computer not work right.

It's not the same because I've tried adb and nothing. Your problem can be fixed by modifying google drivers. In the other hand I tried a friends nokia phone with same usb cable and started installing drivers right away.. Mine does nothing, not even a connection sound just charging. so It's not the cable. I'm starting to think the micro usb port got damaged or something really wrong with the rom but still I've tried to see if reseting the phone works and nothing.
Seems like its an issue with 4.2.2. Since last week my N4 was acting very strange. when I connect to my pc; It would connect and disconnect every second. After checking in Device Manager; my Nexus 4 was listed under SAMSUNG Android Phone . I end up uninstalling it (plus check delete driver software). Then I rebooted my computer. It reinstalled the driver and now its working. Thought my wire was broke.
This worked for me, it shall work for everyone else
Open the start menu and type in device manager and click on it, it should npbringba window up. Now at the stop it should say android device or something similar, drop down that section and right click to delete "Google ADB Interface" which was for me should be for you also. After make sure you check the box in the confirmation to delete the driver. Reboot your PC plug in your device and enjoy!!!
