[Q] Problem with picture text messaging - Epic 4G General

Went to a sprint store (appointment) and they told me that when I am connected via wifi at home, it will not be able to receive text notification and will not be able to see my picture (I have the download button showing but will not open the picture when I click on it). So this means, that when I have wifi connection at home, that disables the 3G connection that I have thus not seeing the Sprint's server where the text are delivered. Aren't the text messages via the 3G or 4G connectivity on the phone. So my wifi connection will not allow the 3G connection on the phone. I tested sending a picture message from my Epic to my Tilt2 (AT&T) windows phone with the same wifi connection and I get the notification and I have to click on the icon to display the picture with no problem. But the epic as I have explained earlier, will give me no notification, it gives me a download button when I open up the text message - but will not do anything at all - not opening the picture. when I disable my wifi - no problem

I need to test this, because if it's true thats bull****, I have Wifi at home on all the time. Heck if Sprint is going to start capping the unlimited plans, why force us to use 3G at all times when there's wifi available? testing this...

yea you're correct, it shows the button if you go into the messages, but it wont notify or let you download it, it says failed. Thats garbage.

Thanks Six-Duece and so I am not the only one. Somehow, if you are connected via wifi, the 3G or even 4G (data connection) is somehow disabled.
Thanks once again.. I am going to return my phone since I am still within the 30-days.
and I notieced even here in Vegas that 4G connection is so flaky and always reverts back to 3G and I pay $10 for something that is not used.
Maybe one day, when 4G connectivitiy is much more stable, then the $120/yr would be worth it. $120 is not joke nowadays

This is a problem for me also. People have told me it has something to do with sprint/android users, which I dont see how thats the case when I have been with sprint for over 3 years now and this is the only phone that has happened to me on.
I have owned the HTC EVO, Touch Pro, Touch Diamond, and Palm Pre on Sprint's network and non had made me turn wifi off in order to recieve pictures. (HTC EVO = Android device)..
Also it seems to let me SEND pictures with wifi on just not RECIEVE.. It sucks & hope someone will figure out a way to get by this non-sense.

yea this could be a deal breaker for me, I think I will weigh my options and decide if I want to keep hanging on to this or say screw it. It bothers me because it makes no sense.

Typically the way things works is like this, calls and text go over the voice network (or on 1x), so you can be disconnected from 3G and still send and receive plain sms.
Now MMS are sent and received (downloaded) over the data network, either 1xrtt or 3G EVDO. Whether you're on wifi or not shouldn't matter as long as you're connected to the cell network.
The issue with the Epic seems to be that if you're connected to wifi it seems to disconnect from the data network (either to save battery or for some other reason INSTEAD OF KEEPING A DORMANT CONNECTION TO THE DATA NETWORK) and as such MMS can't be downloaded or fail to.
Now I don't receive a lot of MMS so I've never really been affected by this enough to annoy me but I can say that other Sprint phones I've had with wifi do receive MMS even on wifi because I assume they keep a dormant connection to the 3G network.
Either way, for heavy MMS folks who conncet to wifi a lot this must be annoying.
Just one more bug we need to alert Samsung and Sprint to for a furure fix. It might be a bug or the phone was just designed that way for some reason.

i will have to try that this is bs
if they wont do anything i may have to get an evo instead but i wish not to have to

The reason I brought this up, is because I connect wifi most of the time (at work and at home), and family sends a lot of picture messages. So this is a big issue for me especially since you don't receive any notification.
Maybe if they fix this issue then I might go back, since I am still in the 30-day return guarantee. I will be monitoring this thread.
Thanks for all for testing and confirming my problem.

Hi,
Has anybody of you who had the same problem as I did, has this issue been addressed and fixed now..
Thank you for taking the time to respond back

I just noticed that my mms pictures are now downloading when on wifi. Maybe Sprint quietly fixed this bug? Anyone else notice the change?

It was a problem with the hero. Its not exclusive to theepic. Apparently it has something to do with adroid

No problems here. Just tested on my epic, wifes Evo, and my old Hero. Everythings working fine over wifi regarding mms. I wilk say tho that the Hero and Evo received the mms withing a minute, while my Epic didnt for about 8 minutes.

MMS ISSUE

I could not pull any multimedia texts while on wifi. After contacting t-mobile I found out that there is currently a bug that they are aware of. You cannot pulll mms messages while on wifi. You must be on a data service in order to pull them. They are working with HTC to fix this problem.
Sent from MTS using Tapatalk
That happened to me the first day I got the phone. I thought it was a sim card error. It never even occurred to me that I had wifi connected until you just said that now...
i think this was a bug on one of the earlier builds of my g1, like way back in the beginning
I was wondering if any of you have heard any news on this issue. Or maybe a work around besides turning off WiFi. It is so frustrating . I had this same issue with a Blackberry 8900 a while back.
I've had this same problem since I got my phone. I guess we just have to wait for Froyo and hopefully that fixes it
So it seems more like that its a tmobile thing because my wifes cliq was doing this, since we dont have data turned on with her phone and i just bought the slide and its probably the same thing...but i just try to send a pic on wifi from her slide and my nexus and neither work
Any fix for the mms issue yet?
Is anyone finding Froyo to have fixed the problem? Any workarounds? Just wondering as this is a major problem with this awesome phone. Can't send ANY MMS messages at all!
I can im always on wifi not always but like 95 percent

You can not send or receive mms over WiFi it has to be pulled from the apn and you can only pull from there when you have a data plan it is a way to keep people from using phone without data plan this applies to all Android phones

MMS Argggghhhh is my SmartPhone stupid

Is my Evo Smartphone dumb? I can get MMS Txt messaging but usually always get the Error Downloading..If I turn off my wifi, I will then get the pictures no problem,
Shouldnt the phone be able to decipher what is coming through and what network to use? Text are data and those come through just fine, and MMS comes through cellular network as well, shouldnt they come through even if Wifi is on?
Anyone else having this issue
Same here, I do use JuiceDefender Pro though.
i sent a test video from my pro2 to the evo. the evo downloaded the video successfully. i had wifi, BT, 4g, and the cell radio on and the phone had no issues. im stock un rooted.

Replacement for Slide

I've had it with this piece of ****. I'm on my 3rd Slide and STILL have "Generic Network Failure"s when trying to send or receive MMS, get "Unable to send message, retrying" with 3 god damn bars of service when trying to send an SMS sometimes, lose my E and 3G data connection all the time even though T-Mo says I should get a good 3G connection. So, what is something comparable to this? Has to be Android. T-Mo wants to send me a Blackberry something or other, and I have no interest at all in that.
There gonna try to send you something comparable. What they think is comparable is whether or not you have a keyboard or not, not what OS your current phone has. If you complain enough you may be able to get a Vibrant but odds are against you. Threaten to leave and that may help.
Firsr and most importantly have you tried setting the phone to 3G only? Also Making sure you have the correct data plan (its slide specific not android..stupid tmo) and making sure no app or anything is messing with apns?

Que? There are different data plans? Yea, I've tried setting it to 3g only. The problem with that is I barely get a signal in my house. All the APNs are what they should be, none of those settings has changed. The odd part is on each of the phones, I have had my apps installed on day one, and the thing works fine for a couple of weeks, then I start having these problems out of the blue.
i started having issues a few weeks ago in my area, i had awesome data speeds when i connected, but 9/10 times i would get half of the page loaded and then it would hang which meant resetting my data connection or rebooting the phone or any number of other fixes. i have the advantage of working at a t-mo store and was able to pull up the map of my area and see that they were working on my tower at home and as of a few days ago my connection is 6-7mbps down and solid as hell, i used to go to bread co to use wifi but tethering is faster now(and more convenient, and i don't have to worry about a firewall)
did you try a new simcard?

yes theres a slide specific data package. Im sure you have it if it works for the most part but yea the android data package will not work supposedly. and of course theres the sidekick package blackberry etc
The slide package is 5 dollars more. I was originally signed up for it but I called in and got it switched. The dataplan works fine, I wish I could say as much for the phone. My third replacement will be here this week...

My 4th replacement is in the mail right now. Tmobile offered me a blackberry 9700 to replace it, obviously I jumped all over that(insert sarcastic undertones).
I'm gonna wait for the HSPA+ phones to come out and maybe I can talk them into giving me one at full upgrade price, I would take the Vibrant, but I can't stand that phone. It only takes a few warranty exchanges and finding the right rep, and you can get whatever you want from tmobile.

Wifi calling

Anyone try out wifi calling/messaging yet? I just sent an mms and the "G" appeared even though the cell signal is off and it's supposed to be through wifi. It took longer than when I'm on 3G too...
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
i think the mms goes through a diff system when get home ill try it
I believe MMS always goes through cellular data.
This is to prevent an exploit of sending free messages over Wi-fi

Something came up for crackberry users that stopped them from using UMA and since WIFI calling hits the same servers as UMA, i.e... they are the same thing, I suspect that your issue might be the same as what they were having. Your ISP's DNS is blocking the service. If you can change your DNS settings to OpenDNS.com and give it another try. This may not fix your issue, but I know it did for a whole lot of crackberry users.

I get the same error message. Just got off the phone with a tmo rep and she said that there's a signal outage(?) around Atlanta and that's why I can't get ANY cellular connection whatsoever. But I remain skeptical, as my friends on TMO are having no problems and the "outage" just so happened to affect me right after the OTA was installed. My fingers are crossed that everything gets fixed though.
Mines works fine, it depends on what kind of network your on. On my campus it would not work, but when I got to my gf apt it worked perfectly. So check the wifi settings that you haveto make sure there isn't a firewall or something else set up.

Mine works on my college campus great. I have terrible coverage here. This may be a stupid question but, it only uses minutes when I'm actually calling someone right? Not however long it is enabled? I'm only asking because I'm tired of getting screwed over in ways that I logically shouldn't be.
Yea it only uses minutes when you are calling. Also I don't know what college you go but I go to umiami, so our networks are really strict with regard to using them for gaming or any kind of tethering. So I'm guessing they haven't allowed us access to do that here. But on any other networks like a home network it works perfect.

I go to Westfield State in MA. I had to get my phone registered on the resnet net work to use the wifi. Can you use wifi at all at school with your phone?

Crap. I just sorted out my issues with things draining the battery and now Wifi calling is running rampant. It stays running in the foreground even when it is turned off and logcat shows that it is constantly active even when the phone is asleep. Is anyone else seeing anything like this?
well i would like to know why its wifi calling if tmobile still use the mins from your plan thats like stealling it helps tmo they use less data but still charge us for it
Yea genius on their part...even still its not like they're not doing anything. It its still being runs through their network just not through their towers.

yea, what he said. Cellular towers are like a gateway to the Tmobile internet. The still pay for all the fiber and backhaul that gets your calls and data where ever it is that you want them to go.
i just updated and i opened up wifi calling and configured it. i dont understand how its wifi calling when it still uses our minutes? whats the point of having it then? what benefit is there to having this app?
Yea we can but we are literally forced to just web browse lol
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
T-mobile has had the "charging for minutes via wifi" policy now for YEARS going back to the first Blackberrys that supported UMA. Minutes were deducted unless a customer paid for the @home service per month. You can complain all you want, but if you consider the other carriers and their options---T-Mobile does NOT charge for HSPA+ (4G) access while other carriers do, and some charge even if there isn't 4G in that city just based on the phone! Wifi calling can also prevent you from incurring roaming charges by allowing you to make calls from almost anywhere you can get wifi access a feature that other providers just don't have. T-Mobile gives more minutes for less money, offers more data download than other carriers, and offers some truly awesome features that others just can't compare to.
Although WiFi calling uses up our plans minutes, if we have unlimted weekend minutes, use it on the weekends, is it free or does it take away from the anytime minutes?

[Q] MMS question...sometimes it doesn't send

Is anyone else experiencing this? I'm on tmobile..stock jellybean and stock texting app.
sometimes the MMS will go right away..sometimes they will sit for days..and then i send (or recieve) one from someone and suddenly the floodgates open all my 'stuck' MMS messages go.
i dont know this is a defect..or maybe something quirky about tmobile's network..but it seems to happen about once a week the messages get backed up like this.
never had a problem with SMS..i dont think.
Not sure why but i've had that too. The other night sending to my friend on T-Mobile it wouldn't go for hours then i resent it some 9hrs later and it worked fine. I don't think it's a N4 problem per say as i've had that with my SGS2 also. Maybe it's a ROM thing or just carrier issue but wish it wouldn't be so!
I got this experience with MMS:
- when on WiFi than impossible to send;
- only when on Data transfer MMS is send.
Try to manually set the data and not wifi and try.
Good luck.
MMS only send on mobile data connection, thus has been standard behaviour on every Android phone I've owned
makes sense. i'm on/near wifi for most of the day every day so i guess its not going to send until i'm in my car driving somewhere and regular data kicks on
Shouldn't matter as the phone wont use WIFI to send MMS if the APN has "mms" designation it it. You can watch the signal bars and see he up/down arrow in the cellular signal bars vs wifi when trying to send. At least, that's what it does on my phone yet it still just doesn't send once in a while.

did an experiment today; sent 3 MMS (while i'm hooked to WIFI) and 2 of them went..made a phone call before the 3rd one sent..and it got stuck in 'sending' mode.
2 hours later still stuck in 'sending'. i sent a text to that number ...didn't help.
I then sent another MMS..and when i did, it triggered both the new one and the 'stuck' one to go through.
so there you have it..not conclusive but it seems like maybe when its switching between voice and data it can get stuck..and the stock MMS messenging app doesn't seem to be smart enough to resend automatically. it seems like you have to 'jiggle the handle' to get it to go by sending another MMS.
it also seems sending ANY mms (not even to the stuck #) will release all the hung MMS for everyone.
