Remove Screen Off Promotional Video From an On Display Fascinate - Fascinate General

I bought a bad ESN Fascinate off eBay to flash to cricket that was used on Display.
Whenever it is plugged in and you turn the screen off it shows the promotional video. Not good for charging...
How can I stop it from doing this without flashing a ROM? Lol

Can you not simply locate the offensive parts and remove then with a file manager?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App

I've been searching and can't find it. I guess I'll keep searching. Was just curious if anyone already knew where they were located or if there was an APK to remove.

Try locating the bad part/file(s) by connecting the phone in debugging mode then run adb logcat and make the phone run the demo sequence. logcat may show what file is being run.

No, I see about 90 people have viewed this but there has been no answer.
I am not a Dev and lack a lot of skills needed to make a custom ROM.
Bit if I understand things right. All the Tabs are the same exept for the radio that is used to access the internet on a network.
But other than that all hardware is the same, so other ROMs should work just not allow you to use the internet.
I for one am using just using Wifi so I would like to be able to use some of the other ROMs.
Wow
There is still no real answering this?Up
I use my Evo and wife only for internet on my tab. It would be great if I could use any Rom out there .
Sent from my SCH-I800 using XDA Premium App
I was asking a developer this yesterday, he said if you take a Gsm rom and run it it will not run properly. As you are aware the radio will not work which you said is not a concern but other things will become an issue like your device being seen as a Cd drive. The frame work is totally different. If you are cool with Heidmall and have the stock Verizon image files go ahead and try it. doing major back ups of your current config. If its not working the worst thing is you will have to reapply the stock image and start over with your back ups.
CM7 for our tabs is in the works if you can wait it out a bit longer. Im not sure exactly what you expect to get from another rom??
Really I'm just looking for a little more speed and better battery life.
To me the Tab is still the best out there due to size and form factor.
But playing Anger Birds with wifi on seems to make my tab a little slower and lag.

Do you have Verizon or Sprint GT?
I can tell you there are differences. I tried to get the sprint tab running CwM using the verizon bootstrap method and my tab is borked. Completely unresponsive except for the BSOD the phone ! pc graphic. I am pretty sure I could fix with odin but I dont have a pc. I am on vacation with my macbook pro and I think I am really gonna be screwed when the battery dies.... Anyone have a solution to this?
I have nothing to support this, but I have "survived" the "phone ! pc" and I *suspect* that the "phone ! pc" has to do with low battery (or some minimal power needed, even for download mode.)
In my experience, I *had* a fully charged tab when I've seen this, so it may be some misreading, somehow. I've forced myself to take a deep breath, plug into a wall charger and walk away for ~hour. After this, I can get it to Download Mode, and reflash with stock image. Scary and random, but I think it's meant as a symbol/message to have the device *fully* charged for attempting flashing, etc.
Again, this is theory only, but I've seen that screen 2x on both a sprint & verizon tab, and patience has won the day. Good luck.

Usb not responding

Trying to connect my mates epic 4g to the computer over standard usb cable to her acer one netbook. And nothing works. Not in or out of debug mode. Not in all the usb ports. Installed the samsung drivers nothing. all it does is charge it. I'm I missing something here, trying to help someone out. Any help would be great.
Sent from my R800i using XDA App
I have no real answers but I will say that the drivers from Samsung are total trash. I have three different computers I connect to and several different cables. For all three computers I need to frequently re-install the drivers, and each time I do, there's no better than a 50% chance it will work. So, I don't think you're missing anything other than the fact that this is a very common problem with no real solution other than to try another cable if you have one and to try to uninstall and re-install the drivers a couple of times.
Thanks for your help. Just trying a new cable too. Its there anything anyone has done as a foolproof method. After all my nokias, htc and sony ericsson phones, I don't expect this.

Sounds like you have a faulty stock usb cable. Get a replacement from a sprint repair store.
Cheaper and higher quality cables can be found on ebay, amazon, or monoprice. The last place I'd look for replacement cables is at the Sprint store.
I'd second rebooting the phone and your PC, always worked for me in a bind.

Where did you get yours from?
Yeah I am facing the same problem, worked two days ago and now nothing. going to try the install fo the drivers again and if not working, new cable.
I had the same problem and then I noticed that 2 of the USB pins in the phone's usb port had detached from the center plastic piece and when I connected the cable, they bent and got pushed back. I can still charge but I will never have usb connection again.
Sprint wouldn't take the phone back.
I just use Swiftp like another said.
So I got it to recognize, it shows the usb button, i press it and nothing happens. I downloaded Swiftp, freaking awesome!
I plug in the phone to charge while on the computer and it allows me to connect usb for mass storage. Go figure. I have not changed anything since last night btw.
To those that use swiftftp. Have you tried File Expert? its an all in one file manager
that supports http and ftp access to the SD card, and can host over wifi or 3g/4g
Resurrecting an old thread because my phone suddenly stopped responding to plugging in the USB cable. I have been using the same cable for a couple of years with no problem. I also tried another cable that has worked fine. The phone charges but I get no data connection of any type. No PDAnet and no USB storage device. I tried a couple of computers and rebooted both the phone and the computers. I have to assume it is a hardware issue of some sort.
I happened to edit my build.prop earlier today to stop the update message, but I assume this is unrelated.
Look in the port if there is some gunk in there. Just helped somebody earlier with the same problem. None of us ever close the little door. He used a toothbrush to clean his.

Seriously, no way to take screenshots on unrooted evo?

Well since I got my replacement evo, it came with GB so I lost root and access to my screenshot app for rooted phones.
I searched and all I found was the android sdk and screenshot it which is tethered and your phone needs to be plugged into the computer every time you reboot.
Any other options?
If you can turn on USB debugging, you might be able to use ddms.bat included with the Android SDK (for Windows). It takes a second to start up, but if it finds your EVO, you can choose "Device, Caputre Screenshot" and win.
It's not the best solution, but might be the only solution. Requires a USB cable.
So I have to plug it in every time to take a screenshot or is this a one time deal?
Search for app called shootme.

You can set up QtADB and do screenshots but only when your phone is plugged in usb. At least that way you can do it graphically instead of command line.

yeah but they recently updated the app and its no longer working without root.
There's an app called No Root Screenshot It in the market for $4.99. It's fairly easy to setup, and the only catch is you have to re-enable it everytime your phone reboots thru the PC program that is required to install it. I use it on my unrooted EVO 2.3.3 and it works great.
Edit: Ah I just noticed in your OP about Screenshot It. It's not so bad with the re-enabling and stuff. Usually I'm home when I reboot, so it isn't a big deal to me. Still gets the job done for us who got screwed with a 2.3.3 refurb.
I think some versions of the Evo's software have allowed it without root, and some haven't. I think it's gone back and forth a few times, and I'm not sure why they can't make up their mind.
An unrestricted ability to take screenshots could be a security risk, as an app could run in the background and take screenshots while you're entering your credit card info or whatever. But I don't see why they couldn't have it built into Android and protected with defined permissions, just like other sensitive operations are.
ShootMe worked on my Evo before I rooted it - this was back on whatever version was before 3.70 (3.30, I think). If it's ShootMe that doesn't allow for non-rooted screenshots, I have an older version you can try out. If it's your phone, you're going to have to do it the hard way.

Nexus S 4G [D720] - data extraction question.

So I ran over my phone. The digitizer is smashed, no way to use the phone via GUI. I took it apart at work today and noticed the SanDisk SDIN4C2 16GB NAND Flash memory module is removable. I will be receiving a replacment model tomorrow from the insurance company, and was wondering if it would be possible (and safe) to place my memory module into the new device. The only thing I would be worried about is some sort of weird pairing between the nand chip and the motherboard.
So my question to you is which method do you think would be better to extract my data?
1. Do a complete motherboard swap without activating the device to avoid ESN conflicts, put the device in USB mode, and pull the data?
2. Simply swap out the memory module and pull the data?
3. Attempt to pull the BGA chip off of the silicon, and access have a data center rescue it?
Option 3 is expensive, and I am pretty well rounded when it comes to hardware knowledge. I just want to see if anyone else has had similar experiences in getting the data from another device without physical SdCard storage.
Thanks,
Austin Stratton

Yes I do. I have been in consumer Technical Support for about 2 years now. I work in the Corporate Call center in Texas. Also option 2 is the most attractive.
Was the phone already rooted with a custom recovery on it? If so, you should be able to get into recovery without using the screen at all. You can adb pull from cwm and/or enable usb drive mode to get at data.
If not already rooted, then I would tend to say <1> is your safer option. You won't have to do any soldering then at least. Of course it's possible that in your running it over more than the digitizer is actually screwed. So if that fails, pull the chip off and transfer it over to get the data off.
There is a module of the Android sdk, called screencast. It lets you use your PC as a duplicate screen. You can use your mouse to navigate your phone.

theft proof

Hi guys..
I'm not very sure if i shud be posting in the Dev section but this is an important topic and this is the easiest way I could get attention of the developers...
After my note 1 being stolen, i was thinking of ways of making the phone theft proof.
And I came up witha few things.
1. Prevent phone from being switched off with the power button withouta password
2. Prevent factory reset withouta password
3. Prevent recovery or download mode withouta password.
I'm d sure if these things can sine how be implemented then or note 2 will be theft proof.
Its all upto the devs now

it's also not a dev discussion topic. thread moved.
I have Android Locator Pro, so if someone gets my unlock code wrong, it takes a picture of them and emails it to me with their location.

out of the 3 suggestions, the 1st one is ridiculous. so a normal user has to input a password everytime he wants to turn the phone off? that'll do wonders for the batt life...
and doing all these things won't make it theft proof.. you can still steal it but you can't use it. being theft proof is like james bond's gun, if someone else other than the user uses it, it doesn't work or self destructs and blows the user's hand off.. now that's what I call "theft proof". :good::laugh:
Avast anti theft is good. They put an app in your rom, you will need root access though. When u insert an unregistered sim card (not registered with avast app) the phone will be locked with loud sirens which u cannot stop unless u switch off the phone. Rendering it useless.
Tough luck if u removed avast av. Need to let the sirens sound whole the app downloads, enter your preselected pin chide and choose register sim. Viola!
Tested with my pervious phone the Motorola RAZR. Works like a charm. Still there after flashing roms.

No need to personally attack someone, especially insinuating they are mentally deficiant. His point is actually very valid. You can lock the reboot menu, lock screen, etc. You cannot stop someone from pulling out the battery. You can also not stop them going to download mode. From my understanding, alterations to download mode would require alterations from Samsung themself as it loads without even ROM on your device, so no rom developers could impliment any changes in download mode.
So what can you do? As was suggested, Avast anti-theft does most of it, and, hope the person stealing your phone has no idea about download mode. Or a theif on a budget that doesn't own a PC.
You cannot lock download mode, as the sbl is signed... you could add a password to recovery if you decided to write a recovery that did this...
But that's pointless as you can flash from the unprotected download mode...
This is a situation that happens a lot, where users think they know what they want, but developers know what's possible.
Passwords to turn off are silly-these phones have a hardware interrupt when you hold down the power key... you can't stop that... you could also simply remove the battery...

Here you go... if you're rooted you can even flash the program so that it will survive a system restore. Only way to remove it is to flash a different ROM. You can hide the program and you can even locate the phone without it having an Internet connection. You can also remotely wipe the phone, take screenshots of it, take picture with the camera, record audio, check call/sms log etc without the thief knowing it.
