Usb not responding - Epic 4G General

Trying to connect my mates epic 4g to the computer over standard usb cable to her acer one netbook. And nothing works. Not in or out of debug mode. Not in all the usb ports. Installed the samsung drivers nothing. all it does is charge it. I'm I missing something here, trying to help someone out. Any help would be great.
Sent from my R800i using XDA App

I have no real answers but I will say that the drivers from Samsung are total trash. I have three different computers I connect to and several different cables. For all three computers I need to frequently re-install the drivers, and each time I do, there's no better than a 50% chance it will work. So, I don't think you're missing anything other than the fact that this is a very common problem with no real solution other than to try another cable if you have one and to try to uninstall and re-install the drivers a couple of times.

Thanks for your help. Just trying a new cable too. Its there anything anyone has done as a foolproof method. After all my nokias, htc and sony ericsson phones, I don't expect this.

Nothing full proof but restarting my computer and phone helps me out most of the time. It's like going to the casino sometimes you get lucky.

I got sick of usb connect issues so I just use swiftp to access my sd card over my network - plenty fast for my stock speed sd card

Sounds like you have a faulty stock usb cable. Get a replacement from a sprint repair store.

Cheaper and higher quality cables can be found on ebay, amazon, or monoprice. The last place I'd look for replacement cables is at the Sprint store.
I'd second rebooting the phone and your PC, always worked for me in a bind.

Actually, sprint corp repair stores "give out" free higher quality shorter but thicker blackberry type usb cable, if you ask nicely.

+1 hojillion to this for swiftp

Bought a new one from walmart lol.
And although a great idea to access the sd card, I want to flash the phone.

Edit: Screen Flashes in download mode when plugged into the usb port. Other then that another night trying and no luck. Anyone know if places "physical stores" offer any higher quality cables. RadioShack, something like that? As I can't buy things over internet in USA atm.
Would a powered USB hub help also? Anyone tried that?
Cheers

Where did you get yours from?

Yeah I am facing the same problem, worked two days ago and now nothing. going to try the install fo the drivers again and if not working, new cable.

I had the same problem and then I noticed that 2 of the USB pins in the phone's usb port had detached from the center plastic piece and when I connected the cable, they bent and got pushed back. I can still charge but I will never have usb connection again.
Sprint wouldn't take the phone back.
I just use Swiftp like another said.

So I got it to recognize, it shows the usb button, i press it and nothing happens. I downloaded Swiftp, freaking awesome!

I plug in the phone to charge while on the computer and it allows me to connect usb for mass storage. Go figure. I have not changed anything since last night btw.

To those that use swiftftp. Have you tried File Expert? its an all in one file manager
that supports http and ftp access to the SD card, and can host over wifi or 3g/4g

Resurrecting an old thread because my phone suddenly stopped responding to plugging in the USB cable. I have been using the same cable for a couple of years with no problem. I also tried another cable that has worked fine. The phone charges but I get no data connection of any type. No PDAnet and no USB storage device. I tried a couple of computers and rebooted both the phone and the computers. I have to assume it is a hardware issue of some sort.
I happened to edit my build.prop earlier today to stop the update message, but I assume this is unrelated.

Look in the port if there is some gunk in there. Just helped somebody earlier with the same problem. None of us ever close the little door. He used a toothbrush to clean his.

Do I need to floss too, or just brush?
I sprayed it with some CRC electronics cleaner a bit earlier and I am letting it dry. I will give a brushing too.

I got the New Samsung USB connection Kit

I got the New Samsung USB connection Kit today, I have the Galaxy Tab 7 from T-Mobile, and YES I do know that it will not work with the Froyo installed, but I got a great deal on it for $15.00 free shipping, so when the talented XDA people find a way, of which I am confident someone will!. I took some pictures so everyone could see the packaging if you have not already.
Yes I did try it just for fun and of course nothing happened.

Again, apologies but is this different from the included cable that comes with galaxy tab? I understand the included cable also acts as a usb data cable for the tab.

Nexus S 4G [D720] - data extraction question.

So I ran over my phone. The digitizer is smashed, no way to use the phone via GUI. I took it apart at work today and noticed the SanDisk SDIN4C2 16GB NAND Flash memory module is removable. I will be receiving a replacment model tomorrow from the insurance company, and was wondering if it would be possible (and safe) to place my memory module into the new device. The only thing I would be worried about is some sort of weird pairing between the nand chip and the motherboard.
So my question to you is which method do you think would be better to extract my data?
1. Do a complete motherboard swap without activating the device to avoid ESN conflicts, put the device in USB mode, and pull the data?
2. Simply swap out the memory module and pull the data?
3. Attempt to pull the BGA chip off of the silicon, and access have a data center rescue it?
Option 3 is expensive, and I am pretty well rounded when it comes to hardware knowledge. I just want to see if anyone else has had similar experiences in getting the data from another device without physical SdCard storage.
Thanks,
Austin Stratton

i would say option 2...try the easiest thing first!...so you work for sprint??.

Yes I do. I have been in consumer Technical Support for about 2 years now. I work in the Corporate Call center in Texas. Also option 2 is the most attractive.
Was the phone already rooted with a custom recovery on it? If so, you should be able to get into recovery without using the screen at all. You can adb pull from cwm and/or enable usb drive mode to get at data.
If not already rooted, then I would tend to say <1> is your safer option. You won't have to do any soldering then at least. Of course it's possible that in your running it over more than the digitizer is actually screwed. So if that fails, pull the chip off and transfer it over to get the data off.
There is a module of the Android sdk, called screencast. It lets you use your PC as a duplicate screen. You can use your mouse to navigate your phone.

Exactly. We don't really get all that much info very quickly. Engadget generally gets info before we do lol.
Also, I forgot to mention that the charging port is a no go.
However, I received my replacement from Asurion, cracked it open, switched the modules over and it work like a charm. Came back up exactly how I left it.
Thank for all the input everyone.

The sandisk chip swapped and clicked in like butter. Worked like a charm. All data is intact. Making a backup. RIGHT NOW.
I am also rooting it tonight, tired of google to re-push ICS. and on a blank phone I may as well go for it.

Hey, do you have to use a heat gun to remove the SanDisk chip from the motherboard?

USB power injector instructions (9volt battery powered)

Here are some instructions on how to build a USB power injector. I built one for my old Nokia N810 and it worked. But I threw it away before the sweet devs gave us host mode on the epic. So, I haven't tried it on an epic yet.
I'm not taking credit for this, just sharing the info. And don't blame me if you break your phone.

I have the MK808 which I bought after the minix g4 (micro usb issue...)
Looking back at it there are a couple of things which bother me going for a stick next time.
Most of the sticks have come with an internal wifi antenna which as you can read in most threads is a bad idea and can completely ruin the experience.
Now some of you will tell you to mod an external antenna, ... great.
Next is the ... lets connect a couple of things via usb thing like keyboard, usb drive etc etc.
In the end it is not a stick anymore. It is a device connected with a bunch of cables to other devices.
I really like to buy the minix n5, since it has alot more connectors already on the device but the only thing holding me back is the lack of an external antenna.

Hmm, in my opinion you have only 1 cable less (from usb to stick) so even with the Minix you still have
a bunch of cables !! Perhaps even more if you're planning to use headphone and mic !
And bad wifi connections is an occuring Android problem, this goes for phones, tablets and TV sticks.
I'm surprised the market isn't blowing up with these at local retailers. I bought the mx2 for 60$ and I gotta say its the best $60 I spent last year

I WAS surprised as well but now I am not. Just look at all these questions, glitches, issues and lack of support from manufacturer. No mainstream retailer will take such risk carrying them. It will be a waste of time and money.
That's why a real manufacturer like Samsung should make one. Maybe with the new octacore exynos 5. 2gb of ram and built in 200gb? I'd buy it in a flash

Yeah for a part I can agree, but imagine how the price would increase when there's only the name of a well known manufacturer on the outside, while the inside still remains with parts of say Rockchip, etc..
I've got an MK808 now for 3 weeks, and must say I'm more than satisfied with it, it's working flawless and I
don't mind the lack of support because there are so many Forums about these Chinese gadgets that the answer
is often only a click away.

Psa : OEM Data cable.

I just spent the past 30 minutes working with a TSR with Verizon trying to get this RAZR HD to detect I two different computers, one with XP and the other windows 7.
Long story short, after many failed attempts to get pc to REFRESH the device manager; no permutation would detect the phone.
I even tried to install the Motorola MTP drivers on both PCs. I tried changing from MTP and PTP Mode under STORAGE Options.
I also tried booting the phone while plugged in.
Eventually the Tech support rep suggested I try the original cable that came with the phone, on a whim. Since this was an alternative replacement I didn't have one. He gave me a phone number for Motorola support.
I searched through both vehicles and tore the house apart to find my original DROID Cable from 2009. It worked.!
The Motorola software came alive with a Motorola cable from the original DROID.

Fyi, this is not called a factory cable, this is just the original usb cable that shipped with the phone. I understand there are some interesting properties about this cable, but factory cable is something totally different.

Cool,
Either way, that should probably be referred to as the OEM cable.
Factory cable is something to help charge the phone while doing a fastboot, details are here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1077414
OEM cable it is.
