Yikes, sorry to hear about that. I was luckily able to recover from an extended fight after flashing the i9000 kernel.. It was a nightmare, but I got it back.

dude i just lived this horror story with the app Power Manager from the market...turned my screen completely black reboot to recovery and wipe data-nothing, restore system through odin, nothing. going to the store tomorrow for a replacement- i am livid.
listen to these warnings, dont f*** with the brightness
I will never turn usb debugging off. If you have it on you can fix it! I posted something about creating screen-cast. By doing that you can see everything you do on the phone on the pc. Let me know if you have it turned on. Don't get creative and flash anything else!
I'm glad some of you got this goofy cryptic story. I have my reasons for not making it 100% clear. I wanted to give a warning, but without being to obvious about certain things. I have a certain connection with "The Devil"
The root options never worked with my DX, but maybe Droid Explorer, Android Commander or the like would work as well.
I had the same problem I got a new one a few days ago

Is the threat of this total darkness issue (via brightness widgets) something that is unique to rooted Fascinates only?
...or is this a potential problem with stock 2.1 ROM Fascinates as well?

I use the one called "Backlight!" but when I installed and saw the default value levels of 0,50,150,255 and saw a zero that instantly threw up a red flag. Before using widget I just edited the custom brightness levels to 34,65,103 which translates to 13%,25%,45%. Are there other devices where you could assign the toggle to a hard button? That's the only way I can see having a 0 default level on a device.

My expirience from another thread, but I didn't get burned.
good day.
I had the exact same thing happen to me after installing powermanager. The only thing that saved me was the fact powermanager has default settings for different power sources. So although i botched my battery setting and it went black, i was saved by the fact i could plug into a pc our AC power and get the brightness back up to where i could fix the battery setting.
HOpe this helps spare some people some trouble.

Sorry but curiosity takes over with anything resembling a riddle
Screen cast seems like the perfect tool for this problem..assuming you have debugging on of course.
Just wanted to post this here, because when I was googling "screen brightness android" looking for a way to decrease the brightness on the amoled screen of the fascinate this page came up, but it didn't have the answer I was looking for.
I have pretty sensitive eyes like most of you on this thread (otherwise you wouldn't be looking for a dimmer), so reducing the brightness on the Fascinate was a must.
I found this app, called screen filter. Don't really know too much about it other than it works fantastically well and its free. Reduces brightness to almost nothing if you want, and the app functions as a widget for toggling as well.
So anyway, just wanted to post this for other people like myself, looking for a way to dim the lights. I don't have enough reputation to post a link, but just look up screen filter in the app market and you'll be good to go. For some reason it doesn't come up when you search for "dimmer" or "brightness", which is a shame.
Hi guys!
A few of you mentioned that it beneficial to have USB debugging on in such situations. a little bit off topic, but I just in the middle of dealing with USB problem on SF. I been able to get in download mode at one point and flash odin. Now my comp able to see phone. Is there any tools to exploit this debug mode? What information I can get in debug mode? I'm trying to collect as much information about problem as possible, just to make sure I'm not going to have it in the future.

What?
You got into the Download mode....
That is used to flash with ODIN3.
If you are not using it to flash your device right now, you may Sir. turn off your device and boot it up again, or even remove the battery.
If you are flashing you should see by now a green bar growing on your screen. Do no turn off your phone by this time!
thanks guys...i just held the power button for 10 seconds, its ok (i was sort of scared that i might brick the phone if i pull the battery). Wow...this forum is awesome, I got responses almost instantly! Thanks
you sure it's green?
the last time i flashed mine was a purple download line going across the screen
ahh never mind, you were talking about the Odin3 side.

I was really convinced it was green, damn me

If it doesnot have the 3 button recovery, the white "samsung i9000m" splash screen will keep cycling over and over... when that happens do we do the same thing (remove battery or power off)?
I want to test a unit at a bell store before buying but dont want to "break" it.
If you are not in the process of flashing, a battery pull would do.

Hello all. First let me state that I rather not make a thread to ask help on a problem that seems to have happened to a few owners, but my knowledge as to how I could resolve the issue is severely lacking..
At some point today my phone was ringing but the screen would not show. I thought about taking the battery out and turning it back on but there would be no HTC, Bootanimation, anything. It was Just a black-lit screen which responds due to tactile feedback and the four touchkeys light up as usual. At first there was an odd sound that would play after a few minutes so I decided to charge it but again there was nothing. Even tried to access bootloader with -Vol and Power still no screen.
I asked a friend of mine to call my phone to see if it would ring but they said it instantly goes to voicemail as if my phone was off. Note that I WAS SURE IT WAS ON.
Adb seems to work with it as it seems whatever I need to do I have to do it through there.
G2 rooted with gfree method
CM7.1 RC1
Clockwork Recovery
Again i am sorry if I bothered those with posting something others would think is "too common of a problem" as I have no experience in fixing this issue. Plus I would like to try any option available as I would not like to try and have my phone replaced (because of the risk of discovering root and obtaining a G2 with stock gingerbread which is currently not rootable)
Please help..
It sounds like you're suffering from some sort of hardware failure. You need to send your phone in for repair/replacement.

Same issue here...
I'm facing the same issue, when i try to unlock the phone (power button or trackpad) the screen lights but stays black, and the buttons are also backlit. I have to lock again with power button and unlock again to get to the actual screen.
It first happened a few days ago, and since i didn't reboot/restart in weeks i tried to reboot but the same issue comes back.
then i shut it down, pulled the battery and then back, and restarted: the phone goes directly to that black backlit screen, i tried several times and tried recovery with no luck, so i thought my phone was messed up although i did have some haptic feedback, well in fact the phone was actually booting, but just not showing anything else than the backlit screen; i waited a minute or so to the booting completes (still shows nothing), then i lock/unlock the screen again and there it is, asking for the pin code.
I tried to go to the recovery again to try to wipe dalvik-cache, i know for sure it goes to recovery, but with a totally black screen, not even backlit this time; the trackpad is too sensitive in the recovery to just blindly navigate in the menu, so it is not useable at all.
Then i had the idea to go to Rom Manager, i reflashed the rom from my sd-card, and enabling wipe dalvik-cache, which worked (all through a black screen). After a few minutes i "felt" it rebooting (vibrating) but still back to that black backlit screen, and i locked/unlocked it again and back it was asking pin code...
I also tried to roll back recovery to 3.0.2.4, since i remember i updated it a few weeks ago, but still the same issue.
I don't know what else to do without accessing the recovery, i wanted to try another kernel, or remove the trackpad wake... is there a way to do it via a script? I guess it's what Rom manager does...
Next step will be a total wipe, but i need to make some room on my sdcard for backup purposes first...
If anyone has an idea to sort this out, i'm highly interested...
I'll try to get a logcat, maybe could give a hint
Edit: Virtuous sense 2.0.0 (used it with no issue since it came out, could it be a hw issue?)
Edit2 : attached logcat
Is the pin screen differant than the usual one ie white number keys? If it is that's the sim lock screen you need to call the carrier to get the code or find out the default. Or just get a new sim lol
nah it's the 4 digit pin code, i didn't lose it btw, it's still working and i can use the phone, but i have a black backlit screen whenever i want to wake the phone, and thus when i receive a phone call, i don't know who it is and i blindly press/swipe the screen to answer, because if i want to use the same trick of locking /unlocking, it doesnt work as the lock button is also used to reject a call...
Maybe rip and reinstall the phone app?

I have the same exact problem as this EXCEPT, it's intermittent. Sometimes when I wake the phone I get an all black but backlight screen, and other times it's fine. I'm on CM7.1.
But a superwipe and reflash will probably fix it. Also don't restore system data on TB
I know i still can use wipe data + cache + dalvik through rom manager, and i always used to superwipe before switching roms, but how can i do that now when the recovery is all blacked out?
can anyone guide me to a script or something i could do while the phone is active, to tell him to reboot to recovery and flash that superwipe?
anyway i'll try the regular wipe and keep the thread updated

On my side if i leave the phone locked more than 30 seconds, it happens 100% of the time; also I noticed that now the backlight blinks 2 or 3 times (1 second blinking) when locked, first a few minutes after locking, and then randomly, about 3 or 4 times per hour; I guess it's getting worse;
I've read on another thread that it could be video cable getting loose, but since mine is still under guarantee, i won't open it right now just to check, if i can't fix by wiping / superwiping (when i know how to), i'll use that guarantee, which is one month left (lucky me)
EDIT: one other thing that makes me think it's no hardware, when the black screen appears because of a phone call or a message, the ringtone and notification sound are both half as loud as they should be, this is all really strange
after backing up my data, i reflashed the rom via Rom Manager, and I wiped data and cache (which equals to factory reset) this time: the first screen that should show the pin code numpad was already a black (backlit) screen!!
Also, thinking about it, i realised that the "flash rom from sdcard" menu in Rom Manager is in fact "Flash ZIP from sdcard": the zip doesn't have to be a ROM!!
So I tried flashing a new kernel this way, also some framework modifications (extended settings, removed TP wake, etc...) they all install Ok, but still this black screen...
Also I was about to flash SuperWipeG2.zip this way, but if it doesn't fix my problem, I will be stuck with a blacked out recovery, as SuperWipe wipes everything including /system; so if anyone has an idea to tell Rom Manager to flash two zips (Superwipe then Rom) i'll be willing to try, or a script to do that;
Maybe i'll have a look of the scripts in Superwipe and in the rom, and put both zips together... don't know if it's possible?
Maybe I'll try the Superwipe alone if I can get a spare phone, just in case...
Other thing:I used the phone's gps for more than 5 hours with the screen lit, and it never flickered even once; so it's hard to believe it's a screen connection issue...
Just to keep this updated, everything i did, including superwipe didn't change this issue, so i sent it back to the technical support (under guarantee) and I got it back today; the report that came with it says the screen has been replaced; so it was hardware finally...
Hi, i have same problem.. Black screen in recovery and during the boot. When the system boots, screen is OK. Sometimes i have also blackscreen when I want to use HW keyboard. I tried 4ext, reflash older versions of CW but still the same. I can see a screen through Android Screen Monitor and I can cotrol it. But phone is blak, only backlight. Can somebody say, how to solve this issue?
So, for other, if you cant see screen, you can use Android Screen Monitor for Windows and connect phone through USB and see a screen.

WAIT one minute... they don't care? where was I when this meeting took place?
I had this issue as well on a spare G2 I had.
The screen was just black but you could tell it was lit, hardware keys were lit as well.
The phone was actually my brothers and it rooted w/ CM7.
I ended up selling the phone as is on Ebay but after some research it was a failure in the hardware for the screen and I found extensive instructions on how to replace it that I didn't wish to do.
I never attempted to get it replaced and kind of wish I did now if they don't care about the device being rooted.
I purchased my G2 before he had his, and it's never had the issue so not sure what to think of it.

FML! I went ahead and did it! I mentioned that I hadn't had an SOD or reboot since ICS and now enraged the gods of karma and pulled down on myself a wrath unlike any other!
Yes, I have a problem that I call the Black Shroud of Death. Using transformer and the backlight goes out. I click the power on and I see the backlight go on but I don't see anything on the screen. Hmm, figure that I must have gotten my first SOD or maybe a misbehaving app is FC'ing. So I reboot, the ASUS logo flashes a bunch of times and then it goes to a black screen...backlight is still on though. It never "seems" to boot. I reboot a couple of times and it repeats the same process.
Then something odd happens, when playing with the power and volume keys I notice the lock screen for a second appears. Playing around more and suddenly I see the lock screen BUT only if I hold the volume keys. So, it IS booting but for some reason, the display is unable to show graphics. The backlight is on too so it's not a backlight issue.
I am able to unlock and I start disabling settings(I'm on Megatron) in hopes to hit on the cause of this issue. I release the keys and I'm back to the Black Shroud again! If I'm lucky, I can make it reboot into recovery where I don't need to hold keys to see options.
I tried downgrading to a different GAPPS version as I had previously upgraded and wanted to see if that's the problem. While it boot, the typical gapps upgrade screens were flashing like crazy.
I tried reflashing my ROM but that didn't seem to do anything.
My guess is that I need to completely power down and clear out some bad crap in the video memory. I opened the back of the unit but couldn't figure out how to pull the battery cable. I did manage to ruin some plastic clips on the bottom or something, so yeah the less than perfect bottom fit is now fun. So, my next step is to let it power down, charge it up and see what happens.
Any advice...other than don't enrage the Gods?

It might not be software but I can see the recovery screen so I have some reasons to believe it could still be software. Unfortunately, if I try to RMA, they're going to say that I voided the warranty....because I probably did by opening the case AND running a cooked ROM. So, they'll fix it but as a service. I'm not sure it would be worth the cost.
Wait for the next update. I tried sending it in for repair. No change what so ever. If it is software you got me beat on the weirdest ICS bug.

Yeah, I think it's some corrupted memory that sticks around after reboot. At least I hope so. When I get home tonight I'm going to charge it up and see if the power draining helped.
If not...well, it might be time to think about my next tablet. I'm interested in seeing how the "Google Play Tablet" turns out as their might be integration with home theater stuff. Then there's the updated Transformers or maybe the iPad. Yeah, I know iOS is boring as hell but it has lots of tablet apps and gets new one's first. Yea, you screwed up by opening it. You might as well upgrade if all else fails. I'd hold off on another transformer for as long as I can though if I were you...already hearing about minor defects in tf300s such as light bleeding.
Then there's always the...iPad...but make sure you update if you get one! Jailbreak that MF first and then you'd be good to go. My dad wants me to jailbreak his iPad 2, but it doesn't help that he's "update happy"

So, with some plastic clips damaged. Does it close properly now?
The battery cable should be either soldered onto the board or it uses zip cconnector. Nowadays cable/ribbon cable uses zip connector on motherboard.
And not all TF101/G would have 100% perfectly & exactly the same and this might giving you a little not so perfect in term of tiny capacitances on the board. This little components sometimes don't hold voltages that good as they should. Thus giving some trapped voltages and having your battery connected makes this trapped voltages remain in it. The best option now is to drained your TF101 completely and stay drained for another day(this is to let the capacitances drain its trapped voltages). The next time you boot and it might just solved your problem..

Almost, there's a slight bulge in the bottom but it fits on the dock.
Unfortunately, I think it's a hardware problem. I tried unbricking the device using NVFlash to load stock ICS but the entire time the screen never displayed anything. It didn't look like the entire Flash job completed and I can't get the back light to turn on now. I can't even tell if it's charging.
Anything more I can try before I chalk this up to a brick?

Almost, there's a slight bulge in the bottom but it fits on the dock.

Have you tried leaving it for a day or two in total battery drained??
List you could do/perform.
1) NVflash works on B60 and below.. check yours
2) Put it in a freezer for a night
3) Dissemble again and see if anything disconnected or loose since the last time you open it.
4) Smell it and see if anything like burn smell around the motherboard(this could be over voltage from a weak components).
.
.
.
.
.
If all above still yielled the same result..
5) Check and see if your TF101 could survive 2 storey height drop..
Good Luck..

A lot of LCD screens can be damaged by freezing, unless you know that the TF is safe I would not freeze it.
OK, I managed to unbrick the device but I still can't see any video. Backlight is working fine and I can output to HDMI. Digitizer is also working fine as I can manipulate the screen and see the result on the TV.
So, now that I'm at stock ICS and can output video. Does this narrow it down to an LCD problem? If so, is there a loose wire I can check? Am I likely going to have to send it to ASUS for repair?

Yes, but at the time I was looking for a cable that I could loosen, now I'm looking for a cable to tighten. Fml, yes it sounds stupid but I'm at the point where I need to decide if a repair or replacement is the next step. I'm not thrilled with anything out there.
Almost exactly the same problem here...
I have a very similar problem to yours right now; the screen on my TF101 is entirely black but the backlight is on and i can output through HDMI fine. I'm still under warranty but i can't RMA it at the moment as it is running Android Revolution HD and i need to restore it to stock Asus TW firmware before they would fix it. Problem is Rogue XM Recovery is not able to output through HDMI ;p, so now i have to wait for someone to post screenshots/pictures on a thread that i started showing the menu for the recovery and the other screens involving wiping the dalvik cache and installing from zip file. Any closer to solving the problem?
I had the same problem of the backlight being on but no video. It worked over the hdmi but that was it. I had to send in my unit via a RMA to get it fixed.
Thankfully it was under warranty so they fixed it. Did you drop your unit?

Just out of curiosity, why not nvflash your way back to stock? I did because I couldn't find my HDMI mini cable. I haven't opened my tablet again. I'm going to try to RMA it.
try to nvflash stock rom and start over? that would your best chance....
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium
Well first of all i don't know how to use NVflash, and secondly i have a B70 transformer so i don't know if it will work. Also i need to flash the stock Taiwan firmware because that's the original firmware that came with it and i can't find instructions for that. Just wondering though does flashing the stock rom using NVflash also install the stock recovery?
So, my problem is that... Let's start from the begining - I installed swedish snow rls7 yesterday, I got this phone from auction, and it has warranty to 05.2014, coz it was bought on 05.2012, so it's kinda new.
BUT I installed it, everything was going fantastic, rom is great etc. I Overclocked cpu to 691 (if i remember correctly) and installed couple of programs like app2sd, games (angry birds, fruit ninja), everything except z4root and rom manager was from market.
Now, I was driving my car, and had phone in my back pocket, i put it out and it looked like phone is dead, nothing was on it, but I used my sherlock holmes powers, and deducted that the screen lights (you know the "bulbs" around the screen, i dont know how to call it, im not native speaker as you probably noticed already ) wont work, and I swiped throug to unlock, it vibrated so I was WTF? Whats happening?
Now i see that those "bulbs" around screen work, but the screen itself have almost zero brightness it is like 0.000001% I can see barely a thing in a dark room, without a single ray of light.
Its like I can only see the negative like you know, when you look on a ****y LCD screen from a 180 degree angle. I managed to install some apps for changing brightness and even a flashlight, and whats funny? the OFF BUTTON on those app which is red is brighter then flashlight itself, the white screen is almost invisible. What can I do? I dont want to go back and make it phone 2.2 android on stock rom. (which I had installed)
Strange thing: I installed that swedish snow but still I have the RBMobile logo on start, which I surelly should not have there, but some droid or something like this if I am correct.
Phone is working, sendin texts, I can make a call etc.
Try wiping data and reflashing the Rom, it should reset all brightness settings. This will solve any possible SOFTWARE faults.
If it's a hardware fault, you're going down an unpleasant road here on out.
I forgot to mention that CMRECOVERY has the same issue with brightness. So its probably not roms fault
or is it?

No probably not. It seems to be a hardware fault
So, my device had been acting funny for a while, automatically shutting down, stuck on boot loop, fingerprint not being recognised, battery draining really quick.
But since they had been a minor inconvenience, I didn't look in to the problem. But today morning, while I was watching a vid on the Youtube app, the brightness of the phone suddenly decreased, and using the brightness slider had no effect. And then, after a while, the screen went black, with only the finger print sensor vibrating, if touched. When i connect it to the charger, the LED light does not flash. It is not even getting detected when I connect it to the PC via USB.
Any help please ? I think the warranty has run out.
P.S. - All these errors seem to be taking place after the an update. Though I don't remember which one. Also, running stock ROM, didn't flash anything.

Have you tried pressing power button for at least 2 minutes?

I did as you asked. The phone vibrates as if restarting. But there's no display or sound.
Also, I remember just before it went dark, it had just started raining, maybe one drop fell on the screen. Is any way that's the cause of my problem ?

Oh my word, okay, um. Do we need to visit a service centre for that, or can it be done in local mobile shops ? And how much does it cost ?
