Fall Price Drop? - Streak 5 General

You guys think we'll see a fall price drop from Dell to compete with the shiny/awesome/latest coming in October or November? I still haven't seen any hard numbers on Streaks sold in the USA. I'm curious to see what Dell has done in sales and thinks it will do at the current price point.

Well what are the shiny awesome latest?
The only other item i've heard of arriving October is the Samsung Galaxy Tab,
and that's going to be $1000 or £685 for a 16gb
You can already buy two 32gb Streaks for that, so i wouldn't expect to much.

Dont forget the HTC announcement on the 15...

I would love to know Dell's sales as they supposedly said the pre-order amount was an outrageous number.
I highly highly doubt they will lower the price as ATT in prob in control. Screw the price drop and let's hope Dell offers an unlocked one!

Here's a link. I think
http://www.afterdawn.com/news/article.cfm/2010/08/30/new_dual_core_htc_android_device_spotted

I wouldnt hold my breath for a price drop until around christmas.

I'd be really interested in the sales figures in the US for the Streak. I still am yet to see someone who actually owns one, when I see tons of iPhones, lots of Droids, a good amount of EVOs, and even a few galaxies. I really think the actual sales figures here are going to be pretty abysmal...
I still can't believe how badly Dell blew the release on the Streak...simply pathetic...

+1 and Maybe Next Year

I don't believe dell is taking the streak seriously. It could be a small pet project and due to the lack of marketing efforts and bad handling of the release date and a few other factors, I would expect much out of dell other then them stopping production unless they ramp up there efforts which could happen when they finally offer it in stores.

Hi all,
I also can't see any reason why Dell would reduce the price quite yet its not like anything else is coming along that blows it out the water and until the next generation processors start appearing the Streak is up there with the best of them processor and Ram wise. Not forgetting it has a bigger screen then its rivals to and i would say its also one of the best screens around especially when it comes to outdoor bright conditions where I'd actually say its better then most if not all the others.

They will drop the price when someone else comes out with a 5" screen and more advanced hardware.

Galaxy tab hit by poor sales, production halved

It sounds like a bad news for us Samsung galaxy tab owner. Probably there will be
price reductions in the future.

If the carriers in the US allowed phone, I believe it would be selling quite well.
Just my .02, but i almost guarantee if the phone was functioning, sales would be awesome!! Either way, I love my two tabs, they are perfect in size, speed, and everything! Great device in all.

That is from one analysts speculation. I'll believe it when I see multiple analyst with the same conclusion.
Just keep in mind that this "production halved" bull**** is coming from ONE source, an analyst named Ashok Kumar. He's not the most reliable of sources.
Here's a breakdown on his ****ed up predictions and analysis just up to last summer, and just about Apple:
http://daringfireball.net/2010/09/kumar_track_record
No evidence or references whatsoever are provided for this info.
Article says "Info suggests" and "an analyst suggests"...
Give me a break... until references and numbers are given... sounds like bs to moi.
I do agree that US sales would be up if it could be used as a phone tho.

I would personally think that he does make a little bit of sense on the pricing part. Despite the great features, performance and stability, the price is a too high compared to IPhone which is heavily subsidized when you signed up with some carriers. Not mine but i know most of the carriers don't subsidize much for this phone.

How is that bad news for Samsung Tab owners???? I already have one and yes the price will drop but I knew that when I bought mine.... I wanted to enjoy it now and not wait to save a few bucks....
The price drops on everything and there is always a better device on the horizon...
Phone should have been working. Price? Can't blame them for attempting to match Apple, but think the advantages at coming a /bit/ lower would have outweighed the loss of profit per unit.
Least they can drop the price now/offer more features. If they'd have started low, as great as it would have been, if sales had been crazy off the wall, they'd never be able to raise the prices.
So...
Maybe, there's probably a bit of truth to it. If there's a whole load of bundling announced soon (which will be the first step, not dropping the price) it'll be telling.
We'll see.
Not selling well
Here in Thailand it is hard to get your hands on one as it seams the first batch has been sold out.
Hey guys,
i just got mine from Taipei last week, its sold out everwhere over there. I heard their next shipment from the distributors is by the end of the month.
I luckily got mine on the last day of my trip after 2 weeks of constant searching!
the Tab rocks!

The Tab is selling just fine. They are launching it on 4 carriers.. and when AT&T launches next week it'll be on all 4. It's selling fine. Try and find one in stock at a Sprint store in the Bay Area - I dare you.
I was in a Swisscom shop yesterday here in Switzerland, and they mentioned that they can't get enough in Stock.
here in the philippines it is also almost out of stock very hard to find a shop with remaining stocks also

plain and simple. People will or wont buy it. period.
I love analysts that try and "speculate" on sales forecasts on a device that just got released in a major market what...2 weeks ago?
Did i become impatient and pay the full price? hell ya. am i regretting it? hell no. This is the exact device I've been waiting for...I've played with a ton of different tablets including the original laptop - spin screen tablets...and this is hands down my favorite.
Pocket legends = wow....seriously? on a phone? its every bit as good as the original Everquest graphics were.
enough soap boxing....gonna go waste my day with PL now...as one of my favoritely mocked actors would say... "Shuck it Kumar...Shuck it loooong and hard!"
International version probably does better than North American but it should be no surprise to the carriers because potential customers having been voicing all along that:
International
Voice enabled
More competitive unlimited data plans
North American
No voice
Greedy tiered data plans
On top of that, the Tab's larger screen size is ideal for HD YouTube but there's no 4G on any NA version. I'm on Sprint and 3G buffers too much while watching HD Youtube.
looked at all the mobile manufacturer and nothing even compares to the screen size of the samsung will be released by the 1st quarter of 2011 and by far this is the dream phone i have been longing for a long time been speculating to buy an archos 70 and an android phone but the SGT really gives you the best of both worlds so enuff said this phone will definitely sell and it will have more developers working to port CFW definitely waiting for a cyanogen mod or even a Muiu would be nice

Still worth buying?

With Gingerbread and the new dual core CPUs on the horizon is it worth it at this point in time to invest $600 to buy a Streak? I really love the idea of the large screen, but there are even rumors of dell's successor to the Streak (Opus One) with a dual core snapdragon and higher res screen on the way. I'm looking for peoples opinion, should I wait or go for the current Streak?

I'm in the same boat and have the same question. I'll probably be using a more camera orientated phone but will probably wifi tether so I'm looking for a tablet to carry around. Galaxy tab and what nots seem nice but I like how the streak is a smaller size and easier to carry around. So is it worth it? Or is there something better for the price?
There is always something better coming on the horizon and like anything in tech, it is old news once you have bought it.
What you have to ask yourself is will the tech that is around now suit your needs and if so, buy it now. By the time those specs arrive in the shops, something better will be on the cards.
Did the 2.2 update bump the WiFi from G to N? (Otherwise, no, it's not, IMHO.)
Agreed 100% Once I started using this thing, my X10 looked like a mini. Even with the 4" screen.

It's not worth buying a new one as it's 5 months old (if that makes any sense).
Why don't you buy a used one at $430, then it's worth it.
Can you stand to wait longer? I would wait it out, depending on your situation.
The Streak has been out around 5 months, and 5 months is a LONG time in tech and CES is right around the corner.

Sure. If you don't mind waiting a ~year for the device, you can wait.
(It's been over 10 months from the initial Dell Mini5 rumors to the actual device available on the market.)
Best buy in U.S has it for $100 this week. You could always try it for up to 30 days, then return it after you find out whats in store for CES.

5 months and still Dell has not been able to release 2.2.. Does not say a lot about Dell's software abilities. Seems like the Streak is just a hobby to Dell
With dual core, what is the battery life going to be like? Seems like the current devices have plenty of power, but the battery life sucks big time.

This is not true.
Dell completed their 2.2 on August 30, 2010.
I purchased my Streak on October 1st (This was the first day it came out here in Australia) and the first thing i did was update to official 2.2 in the car on the way home.
The update is completely OTA and painless.
If you haven't got the update it is probably because you bought your streak carrier locked on a contract, therefore the bottleneck for receiving updates is the carrier not Dell.

Very true. I got mine, as well, and the update was available right off the bat. It was turn it on and "update available!" lol. I love the streak. It's very usable still. Battery life is way better than my iphone 4, and the screen is awesome (I just need apps to be able to make text larger! Because as is it's very tiny!) I think the Dell Streak is great ^^ Camera sucks tho. It's got HORRIBLE shutter speeds.
Yup, Jump on ebay and get yourself one cheaper then $500. I got mine used for $450 and the guy sent me Dells invoice and I have the warrenty information and all. So be cautious as to who you by from.

Nexus S = Rip off?

Hey guys, ordered this in the UK but I'm hearing so many bad things about it.
No Gorilla glass
GPS problems
Feels cheap
Plastic
Crap camera
.....and so on!
£549 quid this cost me and feels like with all the comments it's only worth half that.
To those who own the handset, what's the build quality like and is it simply a good handset to justify the price?
Thanks
£549 is definitely far too much in my option. Simply because it's nearly £150 more than it's being sold for in the US.
My N1 set me back £412 after shipping and taxes.

I can really understand your point, but this is google's phone, it will be updated constantly and all problems rectified quickly, i think it was rushed out for christmas..... HTC phones or Samsung phones are also not without their problems, and i think we are looking at the negatives too much without enjoying the many positives.
549 IS a rip off, thats understood... But we have to understand that the 330 pounds plus VAT & Shipping from the US will add to the price. There is no doubt that this phone is the best Android phone to date, we just need to give Google time to iron out the errors.
GPS is working fine with 98 percent of devices, which sort of falls into line with what we see with other devices.
When you get your phone, enjoy your purchase, and then wait for the next nexus, which will probably be next xmas to upgrade again. I have told myself now that nexus phones are the only way to have a good google experience. HTC phones have major build quality and hardware flaws, and coupled with there inability to even put a decent screen on their flagship device should be seen as showing exactly what they think of their customers. LCD on the Desire HD = Joke. It looks like someone threw domestos bleach over the screen from an off straight viewing angle, lol
Enjoy your device man... Because there is nothing better atm Well at least untill the next Nexus drops;P

The price in the US is $529 which is £340.78. How much is the VAT, 17.5%?
The correct price in the UK should be £400.42.

The price is rather shocking here in the UK 'like everything' so I'm kind of used to that. Sounds very cheaply built which I find very, very worrying for the price.

It does feel that way. But the perfomance is just out this world. It actually deosnt feel THAT cheap though
Reasons not to get the Desire HD
May not get Honeycomb officially (will defo get 2.3)
Internal and external speaker problems, and very quiet. Internal speaker has high static jolts when calling over 2g. This is also the same for the Desire Z.
Heavy phone over a large area, 160g.
Scratch the metal back and your phone devalues without possible rectification.
Terrible screen, big but blacks are very bleached and also you have a white hue over the phone when viewing from an off straight angle.
Horrible battery cover, gap in the back part + easily bends and warped....

I've also got an iPhone 4, Nexus One, and even a Galaxy S i9000. The Galaxy S and Nexus S are by far my favorite screens. I've also compared them to Desire HD, Droid X and a few others. The MyTouch 4G is the only thing that comes close in my opinion, followed right behind by the iPhone 4, but the iPhone's 3.5" is just too small.
Also, this phone is fast! Screw benchmarks, they're not real-world "feel" of the phone. Out of the box, this NS is as fast as my "lag-fixed" modded overclocked Galaxy S, which has posted Quadrant scores of 2200+.

False rumors of the Atrix not selling/won't sell.

It is false rumors that this phone is not selling well/won't sell well.
1) It has just been released a few weeks ago . Just last week for Canada and not even released in other areas.
2) The Verizon equivalent (Bionic) has not been released yet which should really help in the Dev community for Atrix.
3) Atrix is a big commitment to Motorola & AT&T that they are advertising this thing like CRAZY
4) Sprint is getting the Atrix which will also boost sales and help the dev community.
5) Great reviews from all sites.
6) Other dual-core phones are still a ways off from being released. Plus inital benchmarks of these not looking good.
Plus as time goes by and people see the cool Tegra games, accessories through moto, how fast this phone is and its features. This will be a great seller PERIOD.
no. My dad works in the telecom biz, and knows alot of high up people at moto. This thing isn't selling well at all.
What's the point of a dual core if you have to view its power through a pentile screen that can't even recognize multitouch correctly?
Do you even have the phone? Have you looked at the screen? How many users does the screen "bug" affect?
The phone itself was rated 9/10 on engadget, catching many by surprise who've accused engadget for reserving that score solely for Apple products. Too bad the docks are premature at this stage, not to say overpriced!
It has not even been released outside US! I think far too early to tell whether it is not selling well...
But honestly, I think it would sell a lot BETTER if those crazy accessories came with a realistic price.

I paid 49.99 for mine by trading in a refurbished captivate that I got from AT&T for a penny by calling 611 and ordering it from them.
Then again I always find the cheapest route.
As for selling well, the majority of wireless phone users are dim witted technically challenged people who wouldn't know a good phone from a razr. Even if it were not selling well, it will sell enough for Moto to continue production for a while to come. As for your dad, no intending any offense by this, but unless he is a sales analyst and is watching the numbers personally and knows from first hand experience that it is not selling well, his information is second hand at best and completely useless when determining numbers.
I say give it six months and revisit the issue.

Oh and ATT sold out on pre orders the day it was put on their website
http://briefmobile.com/motorola-atrix-4g-backordered-high-volume-of-sales
This is reassuring to hear. Considering that in one of my posts, I regurgitated this false rumor, this is very good.
My apologies if I mislead anyone in that post.

Deprecation

Im going to go on a 24 month contract, looking at S3 or maybe the One X. What I'm worried about though is I bought my current Sensation XE SIM free for £450, about 6 months ago and now they are selling for about £200-250 I think.
Will the S3 keep its value better? How did the S2 hold value? New to Android, had iPhones before which Sid hold value well I thought
Cheers
The second buy a smartphone it is basically worth half what you paid for it. Fact of life. Doesnt really matter what you buy.
If you happen to buy something good though it will maintain that value for a year probably.

Expect the S3 to quickly lose value after autumn where superior devices will be released... Performance wise this device is sadly not as future proof as the S2 was at its release.

Except for an iphone.
Depending on how you got it, it actually rauses in price.
$1 gets you a reply
Certain phones are more desirable than others and therefore hold their value well on ebay and such.
GS2 is still one of the more desirable ones and can be sold for £250+ on ebay or recycled for £230. (after around 18 months)
Personally I reckon the GS3 will be just as popular and will hold its resale value well.
Obviously it's not in the iphone levels, but normal consumers know the galaxy s brand and it will probably stay in relatively high demand until the GS4
I see the HTC One X selling for £300 BNIB on ebay.. Although it's an excellent phone, I don't think it will be as lucky as the GS3
only apple products keep their market value because of the fact that apple uses price fixing tactics.
Yeh Apple do keep better price, I don't think I'll buy another or brand new again unless part of a contract as looks like I'm going to lost about £225, 50% after 6months
Sad fact
It is actually a sad fact to see the Galaxy S series loses value more than the iPhone series, simply because I think that Galaxy is so much better in terms of flexibility and "mod-ibility".
Apple products hold their value better because there are alot of idiots with more money than sense.

Not necessarily true, the SGSII hasn't lost a lot of it's value just look online therefore i doubt the GS3 will

Slight correction: phones with less competition better maintain their price (because there are fewer alternatives). The moment that viable competitors come out, the price will drop.
The iPhone is sufficiently differentiated, through brand alone, that many consumers are willing to consider it apart from all the competition. And Apple is smart enough to limit competition with itself by only releasing once in a gray moon. (Also by suing the hell out of everyone who has the audacity to release a rectangular phone.) So there you go.

You could be on the receiving end of this trend if you want; just wait a few months and you can buy it for hella cheap. It's sort of a gamble though; the Galaxy S2 held up price pretty well (it's differentiation was probably beat only by the iPhone or the Note), and it remains to see whether the S3 can do the same.

Fair enough but I would suggest that the Galaxy S series has reached some level of brand recognition..so that when lay consumers (rather than us tech geeks) think of the best phones available, they think first of the iphone and then of the galaxy S series.
I reckon that after the initial depreciation (from selling second hand), the GS3 will hold its value well until the next GS phone..
Or at least I hope it will because I'll be getting a GS3 once it comes out!
The Galaxy S II was so good because it was better then every other phone on the market, the Galaxy S III is just a bit better, or at least on par with other phones now.
What other phone is faster than the SG3? What other phone dose what the SG3 dose?
Anyhow the SG2 is still selling for loads and even phone recycle places pay over £200
50% drop?
Then that means it is down more than 50%

Not right now, but just wait and see. Even the dualcore S4 Krait matches its speed on certain tests, there will be more ARM's A15 chips coming in near the future.
That is not to say its a bad phone, but it's not a major leap like the SII was. The price is already a give away imo, $700 after VAT, so before that its cheaper. The Nexus and Note was $800 when they were released. I think that's simply a good thing though since phones were getting too expensive. We have the OneX at $600, S3 at $700, Nexus at $400. I think its positive for consumers, could be $50 lower still.
